CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN WHO SURVIVED

THE BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE THEY TRIED TO DESTROY

CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN WHO SURVIVED

Survival changed people.

Some survivors became afraid of everything.

Some survivors became angry at the world.

Some survivors spent their entire lives trying to forget what happened.

But Khloe Thorne was different.

She survived because she refused to become what her enemies wanted her to become.

A victim.

The morning after Marcus discovered the existence of the hidden heir, Khloe woke before him.

She watched him sleep.

For the first time in months, Marcus looked peaceful.

Not like a billionaire.

Not like the head of a powerful empire.

Just a man.

A tired man who had spent years carrying responsibilities that were never supposed to belong to him.

Khloe gently touched his hand.

She remembered the first time she met him.

Before the money.

Before the fame.

Before the Thorne name became a weapon.

He had been just Marcus.

And that was the man she loved.

Not the empire.

Not the fortune.

Him.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Khloe immediately became alert.

She almost ignored it.

But something made her answer.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"You survived."

Khloe froze.

"Who is this?"

A quiet laugh.

"Someone who thought you would never make it this far."

The call ended.

Khloe stared at the screen.

Her heart was beating faster.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

Because she knew that voice.

Years ago...

Before Marcus.

Before the Thorne family.

Before the empire.

There had been another woman.

A woman who had warned her.

A woman nobody believed.

Evelyn Carter.

But Evelyn was in court yesterday.

Alive.

So who had called?

Marcus woke immediately when he saw her expression.

"What happened?"

Khloe looked at him.

"I received a call."

"From who?"

She hesitated.

"I don't know."

Marcus sat up.

"What did they say?"

Khloe looked away.

"They said I survived."

Marcus's expression changed.

Because he understood.

That wasn't a threat.

It was a reminder.

Someone was watching.

Within an hour, Daniel arrived.

He listened carefully.

Then asked:

"Are you sure you recognized the voice?"

Khloe nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

She looked at him.

"Someone who should not know me."

Daniel frowned.

"That is not possible."

Khloe's eyes hardened.

"With the Thorne family, I've learned that impossible is usually just something hidden."

The investigation began immediately.

And what they found shocked Marcus.

The phone number was fake.

The signal was routed through several countries.

The caller had erased every trace.

But there was one mistake.

One tiny mistake.

A single second of background noise.

Daniel replayed the recording.

Again.

And again.

Then he stopped.

"Wait."

Marcus leaned closer.

"What?"

Daniel increased the volume.

A faint sound appeared.

A machine.

A rhythmic beeping.

Khloe's face changed.

"No."

Marcus looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered:

"I know that sound."

The room became silent.

"Where?"

Marcus asked.

Khloe swallowed.

"Saint Claire Rehabilitation Center."

Marcus frowned.

"What is that?"

Khloe looked at him.

"The place where I spent six months after my father died."

Nobody spoke.

Marcus had never heard this part of her story.

"Why?"

Khloe looked down.

"Because after my father's death, I stopped functioning."

A pause.

"I couldn't sleep."

"I couldn't eat."

"I couldn't understand why someone who tried to expose corruption suddenly became an accident victim."

Marcus sat beside her.

"I was twenty-four."

Khloe continued.

"Everyone told me to move on."

"But nobody asked why."

She looked at the floor.

"I spent months trying to prove my father's death wasn't an accident."

"And then someone came to visit me."

Marcus's voice lowered.

"Who?"

Khloe looked at him.

"Richard Thorne."

The name felt like poison.

"He came to the rehabilitation center?"

She nodded.

"He offered me money."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"To stay silent."

Khloe nodded.

"But I refused."

"What happened?"

Her voice became quieter.

"He told me something I never forgot."

Marcus waited.

"He said..."

Khloe looked toward the window.

"People like me don't survive in worlds like his."

Silence.

"And yet you did."

Marcus said.

Khloe looked at him.

"Yes."

A pause.

"That's why they hate me."

Marcus frowned.

"Because you survived?"

"No."

Her eyes became cold.

"Because I remembered."

Later that afternoon, Marcus and Khloe visited Saint Claire.

The building looked ordinary.

Too ordinary.

That was what frightened Marcus.

The worst secrets rarely lived in terrifying places.

They lived behind normal doors.

The director recognized Khloe immediately.

"You came back."

Khloe stared.

"You remember me?"

The woman smiled sadly.

"Some people are impossible to forget."

Marcus stepped forward.

"We need information about a patient."

The director became cautious.

"What patient?"

Marcus showed her a photograph.

The hidden heir.

The woman's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Marcus noticed.

"You know him."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus stepped closer.

"You're lying."

The director looked at Khloe.

Then sighed.

"He came here years ago."

Marcus froze.

"When?"

"After an accident."

"What accident?"

The director hesitated.

"A fire."

Khloe felt cold.

"What fire?"

The director looked at her.

"The same fire that killed your father."

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at Khloe.

Her face had lost all color.

Because suddenly every secret connected.

Her father's death.

Richard Thorne.

The hidden heir.

The empire.

Everything.

"Who was he?"

Marcus asked.

The director opened an old record.

And said:

"His name was Adrian Thorne."

Marcus felt the world shift.

Another son.

Another secret.

Another piece of his father's hidden life.

But then the director added:

"However..."

Marcus looked at her.

"What?"

The woman's expression turned serious.

"Adrian Thorne didn't disappear because he wanted the empire."

A pause.

"He disappeared because your father tried to kill him."

Khloe and Marcus exchanged a look.

The enemy they had been searching for...

was not the monster.

He was another victim.

That night, Adrian Thorne finally appeared.

Not on television.

Not through a message.

In person.

He stood outside the Thorne estate.

Older.

Scarred.

Carrying years of anger.

Marcus opened the door.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Two men connected by blood.

Two lives destroyed by one person.

Then Adrian looked past Marcus.

At Khloe.

And his expression changed.

"You."

Khloe froze.

"You remember me?"

Adrian nodded slowly.

"I remember everything."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

Adrian looked at him.

"I am the son your father erased."

A pause.

"And I am the reason he was terrified."

The wind moved through the empty hallway.

Khloe realized something.

She had spent years believing she was the only survivor.

She was wrong.

There were others.

People Richard Thorne had tried to destroy.

People who carried the scars of his lies.

But now they were standing together.

And for the first time...

Richard Thorne's empire had something more dangerous than enemies.

May you like

It had survivors.
