CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE MARRIAGE

THE BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE THEY TRIED TO DESTROY
CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE MARRIAGE
The world believed it knew the story of Marcus and Khloe Thorne.
A billionaire.
A beautiful woman.
A perfect wedding.
A powerful family.
That was the version printed in magazines.
The version shown at charity events.
The version people repeated whenever they saw them holding hands beneath expensive lights.
But every perfect story had a hidden chapter.
And the Thorne marriage had one that almost nobody knew.
Not even Isabella Rossi.
Marcus sat alone in his father's old office.
The room still smelled the same.
Leather.
Wood.
Old money.
Everything about the place represented the man who built the Thorne empire.
Richard Thorne.
His father.
The man whose name appeared behind the shell company connected to Isabella.
The man Marcus had spent his entire life trying not to become.
On the desk sat two files.
One was about Isabella.
The other was about Khloe.
And somehow...
they were connected.
Daniel entered quietly.
"You wanted everything on Khloe's background."
Marcus looked up.
"Yes."
Daniel placed the file down.
"Before you open it, I need you to understand something."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"Most people think Khloe came into your life because of your wealth."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"She didn't."
Daniel nodded.
"I know."
A pause.
"But someone wanted you to believe that."
Marcus opened the file.
The first document was old.
Very old.
A photograph.
A younger Khloe.
Before the luxury clothes.
Before the Thorne name.
She was standing outside a small community center.
Marcus stared.
He remembered that place.
The first time he met her.
Ten years earlier.
Before he was the billionaire everyone feared.
Before the empire became impossible to escape.
Marcus had attended a business event in the city.
A room filled with investors.
Executives.
People who smiled while calculating each other's value.
He had left early.
He hated those events.
They always felt fake.
On the way back, he stopped at a small neighborhood center because of a storm.
And there she was.
Khloe.
Not impressed by his name.
Not interested in his money.
She was helping children organize donated books.
She looked at him.
"Are you lost?"
The question surprised him.
Nobody spoke to Marcus Thorne like that.
"I'm fine."
She looked at his expensive suit.
Then his expensive watch.
"People who say they're fine usually aren't."
That was the first thing she ever said to him.
And somehow...
he remembered it.
Marcus closed his eyes.
The memory hurt now.
Because everyone had always assumed Khloe married him for his fortune.
But the truth was the opposite.
She was the one person who had never cared about it.
Daniel continued.
"Khloe was investigating something before she met you."
Marcus opened his eyes.
"What?"
"Your father's company."
Silence.
Marcus looked at him.
"Why?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because her father worked for Thorne Industries."
The room became colder.
"What happened to him?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"He died."
Marcus stared.
"When?"
"Nine years ago."
A pause.
"Officially, an accident."
Marcus felt something shift.
"Officially?"
Daniel nodded.
"Khloe never believed that."
The file contained reports.
Emails.
Old investigations.
And at the center of everything...
Richard Thorne.
Marcus stood.
"No."
Daniel looked at him.
"Marcus—"
"My father wouldn't."
The words sounded automatic.
Not like belief.
Like protection.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting something worse than betrayal.
It meant the man who raised him had built the foundation of his empire on destruction.
That night, Marcus returned to the hospital.
Khloe was awake.
She looked at him immediately.
"You found something."
He stopped.
"You always know."
A small smile appeared.
"I know you."
He sat beside her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Marcus asked:
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Khloe became still.
"Tell you what?"
"About my father."
The color left her face.
So he knew.
"How much?"
she whispered.
"Enough."
Khloe looked away.
"Marcus..."
"How long?"
Her silence answered.
"How long did you know there was something wrong with Thorne Industries?"
She swallowed.
"Before we married."
The words hurt.
Not because she investigated.
Because she carried it alone.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Marcus asked.
Khloe looked at him.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of me?"
"No."
A tear formed in her eyes.
"Of losing you."
Marcus didn't speak.
She continued.
"When I met you, I didn't know who you were."
"I know."
"I only knew you as the man who helped me carry boxes at that community center."
A faint smile appeared.
"The man who didn't know how to fold a cardboard box properly."
Marcus almost smiled.
Almost.
"But then I learned your name."
"And everything changed."
Khloe looked down.
"I found evidence your father was hiding financial crimes."
Marcus remained silent.
"But every time I tried to investigate..."
She paused.
"Someone stopped me."
"Who?"
"I never knew."
A pause.
"Until now."
Marcus understood.
The attack wasn't random.
Isabella wasn't the beginning.
She was the latest move in a much older game.
"Did you marry me because you wanted protection?"
Marcus asked.
Khloe looked hurt.
"Do you really think that?"
"No."
His answer came immediately.
"I know you."
She looked at him.
"Then why ask?"
"Because everyone keeps telling me I don't know anything."
A painful silence.
"My father."
"Isabella."
"The media."
"Everyone says people around me have motives."
Khloe reached for his hand.
"But you know one thing."
"What?"
"Your son or daughter will grow up knowing their father chose the truth."
The word "son or daughter" broke something inside Marcus.
Because suddenly the fight wasn't about revenge.
It wasn't about Isabella.
It wasn't even about his father.
It was about the future.
Later that evening, Marcus confronted Richard Thorne.
Not at a board meeting.
Not through lawyers.
At the family estate.
Richard was sitting in his study when Marcus entered.
He didn't look surprised.
"I wondered when you would come."
Marcus stopped.
"You knew."
Richard poured himself a drink.
"About what?"
"Isabella."
A pause.
Then his father smiled.
Not with guilt.
With disappointment.
"You always were emotional when it came to women."
Marcus's eyes darkened.
"Did you fund her?"
Richard didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The silence was enough.
"You attacked my wife."
Marcus said.
Richard looked up.
"No."
"I exposed a weakness."
The words were so cold Marcus almost didn't recognize him.
"Khloe was never supposed to be part of this."
Marcus froze.
"What does that mean?"
Richard leaned back.
"It means your marriage was the biggest mistake you ever made."
For the first time in his life...
Marcus saw his father clearly.
Not as a mentor.
Not as family.
As an enemy.
"Why?"
Marcus asked.
Richard smiled.
"Because she made you weak."
A pause.
"Before her, you were building an empire."
"And now?"
Richard looked at him.
"Now you care about something other than winning."
Marcus walked closer.
"You don't understand."
"What?"
"Khloe didn't make me weak."
His voice became colder.
"She reminded me why I needed to be strong."
Richard laughed.
"You think love makes you powerful?"
Marcus turned toward the door.
"No."
A pause.
"Truth does."
As Marcus left the estate...
he received a message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
YOUR FATHER IS NOT THE ONLY THORNE WHO LIED TO YOU.
Attached was a photograph.
An old wedding photo.
Marcus and Khloe.
But behind them...
standing in the crowd...
was Isabella Rossi.
The problem?
The photograph was taken five years before Marcus ever met Isabella.
Marcus stared at the image.
His blood ran cold.
Because suddenly the question was no longer:
Why did Isabella attack Khloe?
The real question was:
How long had Isabella been planning to enter the Thorne family?
And the answer meant something much darker.
The attack on Khloe wasn't the beginning.
It was the final step of a plan that had started years ago.
A plan to replace her.
A plan to erase her.
May you like
A plan to take everything she had.
