CHAPTER 14 — THE FINAL BETRAYAL

THE BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE THEY TRIED TO DESTROY

CHAPTER 14 — THE FINAL BETRAYAL

Betrayal was never the moment someone turned against you.

Marcus Thorne had learned that the hard way.

Betrayal was not the scream.

Not the confession.

Not the moment someone finally admitted they had chosen the enemy.

Betrayal was the quiet moment before.

The years of trust.

The memories.

The conversations where you never questioned whether the person beside you was protecting you or preparing to destroy you.

Because the deepest wounds never came from strangers.

They came from people who knew exactly where to place the knife.

The message from Richard remained on Marcus's phone.

YOU WERE NEVER THE ONE I CHOSE.

He stared at it for hours.

Not because he cared about inheriting the empire.

Not anymore.

The company.

The wealth.

The power.

Those things had already lost their meaning.

What hurt was something else.

A question.

Who had his father chosen?

The answer came sooner than expected.

The next morning, every major news outlet received the same announcement.

THORNE INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCES NEW SUCCESSION PLAN.

Marcus read the headline once.

Then again.

His expression hardened.

Because beneath the announcement was a name.

A name that made his entire body go cold.

Alexander Thorne.

The hidden heir.

The son Richard had kept secret.

The man nobody knew existed.

But Marcus noticed something strange.

There was no photograph.

No interview.

No public appearance.

Just a name.

A name powerful enough to shake the empire.

Daniel entered the office.

"You saw."

Marcus nodded.

"Who is Alexander Thorne?"

Daniel placed another file down.

"We've been trying to find out."

"And?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Almost every record about him is sealed."

Marcus frowned.

"By who?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Your father."

That answer only created more questions.

Meanwhile, Khloe was studying the documents from Evelyn Carter.

She had noticed something Marcus hadn't.

A pattern.

Every person Richard destroyed had one thing in common.

They threatened his control.

Adrian.

Her father.

Evelyn.

Even Isabella.

Richard didn't remove people because they were dangerous.

He removed them because they could expose him.

"Marcus."

He looked up.

"What?"

"Your father didn't hide Alexander because he wanted to protect him."

A pause.

"He hid him because Alexander knew something."

Marcus approached.

"What?"

Khloe pointed at the documents.

"Look."

She showed him several financial transfers.

The same dates.

The same accounts.

The same hidden companies.

"These payments weren't just corruption."

Marcus studied the records.

"They were funding something."

Khloe nodded.

"Someone."

A cold feeling moved through Marcus.

"Alexander."

That evening, Marcus received an unexpected visitor.

Charlotte.

She stood outside the mansion.

No security.

No confidence.

Only exhaustion.

Marcus opened the door.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Marcus said:

"You stood beside him."

Charlotte lowered her eyes.

"I know."

"You lied to me."

"I know."

The calmness of her answer angered him more.

"You knew everything."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

"Then tell me what you knew."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I knew Dad was preparing something."

"What?"

"Someone."

Marcus stared.

"Alexander."

Charlotte nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her voice broke.

"Because I was afraid."

"Everyone says that."

"I was afraid because I saw what happened to everyone who stood against him."

A pause.

"I saw what happened to Mom."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

Charlotte looked at him.

"Mom knew."

The word hit him.

Their mother.

A woman who had always been described as fragile.

Quiet.

Weak.

"What did she know?"

Charlotte whispered:

"She knew Dad had another family."

Silence.

"Before you were born."

Marcus couldn't speak.

"Alexander wasn't the only secret."

Charlotte continued.

"There was a woman."

"His first love."

"His first betrayal."

Marcus felt sick.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

Charlotte looked at him.

"Because I finally understood."

A pause.

"Dad doesn't want Alexander to replace you."

Marcus frowned.

"Then what does he want?"

Charlotte looked terrified.

"He wants all of you to destroy each other."

The truth settled like poison.

Richard's plan was never about choosing an heir.

It was about creating conflict.

Making his children fight.

Making them prove who was willing to become the most ruthless.

Because Richard Thorne believed only monsters deserved power.

Later that night, Marcus received another message.

This time, a video.

He opened it.

The screen showed Richard.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

"Marcus."

His father's voice filled the room.

"If you are watching this, it means everything has finally begun."

Marcus's face hardened.

"I know you believe I betrayed you."

A pause.

"But one day you will understand."

Richard leaned closer.

"I didn't create enemies around you."

"I created tests."

Marcus felt disgust.

"Every person who betrayed you showed you their true nature."

"Every person who hurt you made you stronger."

Richard smiled.

"And now only one question remains."

The video paused.

Then continued.

"Are you truly my son..."

A pause.

"Or are you just another weakness?"

The screen went black.

Marcus stood there silently.

Khloe approached.

She didn't ask what happened.

She already knew from his expression.

"He wants you to become him."

Marcus looked at her.

"Yes."

"And?"

For a moment, Marcus remembered every lesson his father taught him.

Never forgive.

Never trust.

Never hesitate.

Then he remembered something else.

Khloe.

Their child.

The people who survived Richard's cruelty.

"No."

Khloe looked at him.

"No?"

Marcus shook his head.

"I spent my whole life trying to prove I was worthy of his approval."

A pause.

"But I don't need it anymore."

The next morning, the Thorne board announced a private shareholder meeting.

The future of the company would be decided.

Marcus knew what was coming.

A war for control.

A battle between blood.

But when he arrived...

he discovered something unexpected.

Alexander Thorne was already there.

The man everyone feared.

The man hidden for decades.

The man who was supposed to replace him.

Marcus stopped.

Their eyes met.

And for a moment...

Marcus saw something familiar.

Not arrogance.

Not hatred.

Pain.

Alexander stood.

"Marcus Thorne."

The room became silent.

"I have waited a long time to meet you."

Marcus looked at him.

"Why?"

Alexander smiled sadly.

"Because I needed to know if my brother was really the monster our father told me about."

Marcus froze.

"Brother?"

Alexander nodded.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"I never wanted your empire."

A pause.

"I wanted the truth."

Marcus stared.

Because suddenly the final betrayal was no longer clear.

Was Alexander the enemy?

Or another victim?

And if Alexander was telling the truth...

then someone else had been controlling the entire war.

Someone who had been hiding behind every betrayal.

Someone who had never stepped into the light.

Richard Thorne.

But Richard's greatest mistake was believing his children would destroy each other.

Because he forgot one thing.
