CHAPTER 1 — THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 1 — THE RECORDING
The hospital suite smelled of antiseptic, roses, and fear.
Khloe Thorne lay motionless beneath the white sheets.
Machines surrounded her.
One displayed her heart rate.
Another tracked the baby's heartbeat.
The sound was steady.
But every few seconds, it accelerated.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Marcus stood beside the bed.
He had not moved for nearly twenty minutes.
His tuxedo jacket was still on.
His bow tie was undone.
There was dried blood on the cuff of his shirt.
He kept staring at Khloe's face.
She looked impossibly pale.
Her eyes remained closed.
One hand rested over her stomach.
The other was connected to an IV.
Marcus reached for it.
Her fingers were cold.
“I'm here.”
His voice cracked.
“I'm right here.”
No response.
The door opened.
A doctor stepped inside.
Marcus immediately stood.
“How is she?”
The doctor removed his glasses.
“She is stable.”
Marcus exhaled.
“And the baby?”
The doctor hesitated.
“The baby's heartbeat has stabilized.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
For the first time since entering the suite, he allowed himself to breathe.
“Is there any permanent damage?”
“We won't know until we complete another examination.”
“When can she wake up?”
“That depends.”
Marcus nodded.
“Do whatever you need.”
The doctor looked at him.
“There is something else.”
Marcus waited.
“We've documented significant trauma to her abdomen.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“You mean from the fall?”
The doctor looked directly at him.
“Mr. Thorne, this does not look like a simple fall.”
Silence.
Marcus knew exactly what he meant.
“She was kicked.”
The doctor didn't react.
“We will need the incident report.”
Marcus looked away.
“You'll have it.”
The doctor left.
Marcus remained beside the bed.
He looked at Khloe.
Then at the unborn child.
Then he whispered:
“I should have protected you.”
THE WOMAN IN RED
Two floors below, Isabella Rossi sat inside a private waiting room.
She had changed nothing.
The crimson gown.
The diamond necklace.
The expensive heels.
She looked like she had stepped directly out of the charity gala.
Except for one detail.
Her expression was no longer frightened.
It was calculating.
She stared at her phone.
Three missed calls.
Two from her father.
One from her attorney.
Then a message appeared.
IS HE BELIEVING YOU?
Isabella typed:
NOT YET.
The reply came immediately.
THEN MAKE HIM.
Isabella smiled.
She looked at her reflection in the dark window.
For weeks, she had imagined this moment.
Khloe gone.
Marcus grieving.
The marriage destroyed.
The Thorne fortune within reach.
She had planned everything.
Except the camera.
She didn't know about the camera.
But she didn't need to.
Because she had already prepared a story.
And a witness.
A perfect witness.
One who would say exactly what Isabella needed.
THE SECURITY ROOM
Three floors beneath the private suites, Nathan Parker sat in darkness.
The security room was filled with monitors.
Every corridor.
Every elevator.
Every private entrance.
Every hospital suite.
Nathan had worked security for twenty-seven years.
He had seen fights.
Affairs.
Threats.
Kidnappings.
Cover-ups.
Rich people did not scare him.
But tonight was different.
Because the woman on his monitor was family.
Khloe.
His niece.
He had known her since she was a child.
He had watched her grow up.
He had watched her marry Marcus.
And he had watched her walk into that suite tonight with one hand resting protectively over her unborn child.
Now he watched the recording.
Isabella entered.
Khloe stood near the marble table.
They spoke.
Isabella stepped closer.
Khloe backed away.
Then—
the shove.
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
He rewound.
The second shove.
He rewound again.
The kick.
Nathan's hand tightened around the edge of the desk.
He had seen enough.
He copied the recording.
Then copied it again.
And again.
One file went to an encrypted drive.
One went to an off-site server.
One stayed on the hospital system.
He wasn't taking chances.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Parker.”
A man's voice spoke.
“Do you have it?”
“Yes.”
“Is it complete?”
Nathan glanced at the monitor.
“Yes.”
“Then don't send it to Marcus yet.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the recording isn't the only thing you need.”
“What does that mean?”
A pause.
“It means someone already knows about the camera.”
Nathan's eyes moved toward the hallway camera.
“Who?”
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the phone.
Then looked back at the monitor.
For the first time, he wondered whether the attack had been planned long before Isabella entered the suite.
THE FIRST LIE
Marcus left Khloe's room at 5:30 a.m.
He found Isabella waiting outside.
She stood immediately.
“Marcus.”
He didn't answer.
She approached carefully.
“I've been worried.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You need to go home.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because I care about you.”
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“Do you?”
Isabella froze.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus stepped closer.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
“I already told you.”
“No.”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“You told me what you wanted me to believe.”
Tears immediately appeared.
“Marcus…”
“Did you push her?”
“No.”
“Did you kick her?”
Isabella's lips trembled.
“She attacked me.”
Marcus said nothing.
“She was screaming.”
“What was she saying?”
“I don't remember.”
“What did she do?”
“She pushed me.”
“With both hands?”
“I think so.”
“You think?”
Isabella swallowed.
“She was angry.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Marcus stared.
“Then why were you alone with her?”
Silence.
Isabella looked down.
“She confronted me.”
“About what?”
“About us.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“There is no 'us.'”
Isabella looked up.
“There could have been.”
“No.”
“You don't mean that.”
“I do.”
She stepped closer.
“Marcus, you came to me.”
He stared at her.
“You pursued me.”
“You told me your marriage was over.”
“I was wrong.”
“You said Khloe didn't love you.”
“I was angry.”
“You told me you were going to leave her.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“I never promised you a marriage.”
“You promised me a future.”
“No.”
Isabella's tears finally fell.
“You can't do this to me.”
Marcus turned away.
“My wife is in that room because of you.”
Isabella's expression went cold.
“You don't know that.”
Marcus stopped.
“What?”
“You don't know what happened.”
She smiled through her tears.
“Maybe the cameras will tell you.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You sound very confident.”
Isabella's smile disappeared.
THE WITNESS
At 6:15 a.m., Marcus received a call from hospital administration.
“Mr. Thorne?”
“Yes.”
“We have someone who witnessed the altercation.”
Marcus immediately stood.
“Who?”
“A member of the cleaning staff.”
“Bring her to me.”
Five minutes later, a woman entered the private conference room.
She was in her late forties.
Short brown hair.
Plain gray uniform.
Her name tag read:
CELIA GRANT.
Marcus looked at her.
“What did you see?”
Celia clasped her hands.
“I was cleaning the hallway.”
“Which hallway?”
“The private suite corridor.”
“Where were you standing?”
“Near the service elevator.”
Marcus frowned.
“How far from the suite?”
“Maybe thirty feet.”
“And you could see inside?”
Celia hesitated.
“The door was open.”
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you see Isabella attack my wife?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Mrs. Thorne screamed at Isabella.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Then?”
“She pushed Isabella.”
“Then?”
“Isabella tried to defend herself.”
“How?”
“She kicked her.”
Marcus stared.
Celia immediately corrected herself.
“I mean…”
“You just said Isabella kicked her.”
Celia's face went pale.
“I…”
Marcus leaned forward.
“What did you see?”
“I saw Isabella's foot move.”
“Toward my wife?”
“Yes.”
“So Isabella kicked her.”
Celia swallowed.
“Yes.”
Marcus sat back.
“Then why did you say my wife attacked first?”
Celia looked confused.
“I…”
“Who told you to say that?”
“No one.”
“Then why are you lying?”
Celia's eyes filled with tears.
“I'm not.”
Marcus stood.
“You are.”
He walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“What hospital department do you work for?”
“Housekeeping.”
“Your uniform says housekeeping.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at her shoes.
They were spotless.
He glanced at the floor.
The hallway outside was covered in muddy footprints from the night's storm.
“You weren't cleaning.”
Celia froze.
“You were planted here.”
“No.”
Marcus turned.
“Get out.”
Celia rushed away.
Marcus remained standing.
His suspicion had become certainty.
Someone had built a false story.
But why?
THE RECORDING
At 7:02 a.m., Nathan entered the conference room.
Marcus looked up.
“You're Khloe's security chief.”
“Yes.”
“You have footage.”
Nathan nodded.
“I do.”
“Show me.”
Nathan connected his drive.
The screen lit up.
The suite appeared.
Khloe stood beside the marble table.
Isabella entered.
The audio was clear.
“You were supposed to know your place.”
Marcus's expression darkened.
He listened.
Isabella stepped toward Khloe.
Khloe backed away.
Then came the first shove.
Marcus clenched his fists.
The second.
His face hardened.
Then the kick.
He stopped breathing.
Khloe collapsed.
Isabella stood over her.
There was no ambiguity.
No misunderstanding.
No self-defense.
No accident.
It was an attack.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“That's enough.”
Nathan paused it.
Marcus turned.
“Give me the original.”
“I already made three copies.”
“Good.”
“There's a problem.”
Marcus looked at him.
“What?”
Nathan pointed at the screen.
“The footage cuts out.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
“Sixty-three seconds.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Can you recover it?”
“I can try.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Try harder.”
Nathan nodded.
Then said:
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“Someone accessed the security system after the attack.”
Marcus went still.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Find out.”
Nathan hesitated.
“Mr. Thorne…”
“What?”
“If someone can alter the footage…”
He paused.
“…they can alter anything.”
Marcus understood.
This wasn't simply a fight between two women.
Someone had planned for the truth to disappear.
ISABELLA'S FATHER
Across town, Isabella entered her father's office.
Rafael Rossi didn't look up.
“You failed.”
Isabella froze.
“What?”
“You were supposed to make Marcus hate her.”
“He does.”
“No.”
Rafael finally looked at her.
“He's suspicious.”
“She attacked me.”
“The recording says otherwise.”
Isabella's face went pale.
“You knew?”
“I know everything.”
“How?”
“Because I own the security company that installed the cameras.”
Silence.
Isabella stared at him.
“Then delete it.”
Rafael shook his head.
“It's already copied.”
“Then destroy the copies.”
“Too late.”
“Dad!”
He stood.
“You should have listened.”
“I didn't have a choice.”
“You always have a choice.”
“She was going to tell Marcus everything.”
“What?”
Isabella looked away.
Rafael's expression changed.
“What did Khloe know?”
“Nothing.”
“Isabella.”
She remained silent.
Rafael stepped closer.
“What did she know?”
“She found the account.”
“What account?”
Isabella whispered:
“The one connected to Marcus's mother.”
Rafael's face changed.
For the first time that morning, he looked genuinely frightened.
“You idiot.”
THE WOMAN IN THE HALLWAY
At 8:20 a.m., Khloe woke.
Her eyes opened slowly.
White ceiling.
Cold lights.
Machines.
She tried to move.
Pain immediately tore through her abdomen.
She gasped.
A nurse rushed over.
“Mrs. Thorne, don't move.”
“My baby.”
“The baby is stable.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
“Marcus?”
“He's outside.”
“Tell him…”
She stopped.
The nurse leaned closer.
“What?”
Khloe whispered:
“Don't let Isabella near me.”
The nurse looked surprised.
“You know who attacked you?”
Khloe nodded weakly.
“I saw her.”
“Do you remember everything?”
“Yes.”
“Then you should tell the police.”
Khloe opened her eyes.
“I will.”
The nurse adjusted the blanket.
Then quietly asked:
“Mrs. Thorne?”
“Yes?”
“Did you know someone entered your room after Isabella left?”
Khloe froze.
“What?”
The nurse looked toward the door.
“I saw a man.”
“What man?”
“I don't know.”
“Was he hospital staff?”
“No.”
“What did he do?”
The nurse swallowed.
“He stood beside your bed.”
Khloe's blood ran cold.
“What did he say?”
“Nothing.”
“Then what did he want?”
The nurse looked at her.
“He looked at your stomach.”
Khloe's hand immediately covered her unborn child.
“Who was he?”
“I don't know.”
The nurse stepped back.
“But I remember one thing.”
“What?”
“He was wearing a gold Thorne family ring.”
THE SECOND RECORDING
Nathan returned to the security room.
He searched every camera.
Hallway.
Elevator.
Parking garage.
Service entrance.
Nothing.
Then he noticed Camera 27.
It faced the private elevator.
At 11:47 p.m., a man entered.
Nathan froze.
The man wore a black suit.
His face was visible.
Nathan recognized him.
He was one of Marcus's closest advisers.
Daniel Voss.
Nathan watched him enter the elevator.
Then looked at the timestamp.
Eleven minutes later, Daniel appeared outside Khloe's suite.
He entered.
He stayed for thirty-seven seconds.
Then left.
Nathan stared.
Why had nobody mentioned him?
He opened the employee records.
Daniel had no reason to be on that floor.
Nathan picked up his phone.
He called Marcus.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
Then his screen flashed.
A message.
STOP LOOKING.
Nathan's expression hardened.
Another message arrived.
YOU DON'T KNOW WHO YOU'RE PROTECTING.
Nathan typed:
WHO ARE YOU?
The response came immediately.
ASK MARCUS ABOUT THE BABY.
Nathan froze.
Then the final message appeared.
ASK HIM WHY HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE THE FATHER.
Nathan stared at the screen.
His hand slowly lowered.
He looked toward the hospital monitor.
Khloe's name appeared on the patient list.
Beside it:
Pregnancy: 28 weeks.
Nathan whispered:
“What the hell is going on?”
THE LIE BECOMES A WEAPON
At noon, the story exploded online.
Photos of Isabella crying outside the hospital appeared everywhere.
Then an edited photograph showed Khloe allegedly screaming at Isabella.
The headline read:
PREGNANT BILLIONAIRE'S WIFE ATTACKS HUSBAND'S MISTRESS.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“This is fabricated.”
His lawyer nodded.
“We know.”
“Stop it.”
“We're trying.”
“Trying isn't enough.”
“Mr. Thorne, the Rossi family owns several media companies.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Then we'll expose them.”
The lawyer hesitated.
“There is another issue.”
“What?”
“The witness.”
“Celia?”
“Yes.”
“She disappeared.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Find her.”
“She left the hospital.”
“Find her.”
“We're trying.”
Marcus stood.
“I want her found before the Rossis do.”
THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED
Three hours later, police found Celia Grant.
She was sitting alone in a bus station.
Her hands were shaking.
A detective approached.
“Mrs. Grant?”
She looked up.
“I need protection.”
“From whom?”
Celia looked around.
Then whispered:
“Isabella Rossi.”
The detective sat beside her.
“What did she make you do?”
Celia began crying.
“I lied.”
“What did you lie about?”
“I didn't see anything.”
“Then why did you testify?”
“They threatened my son.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“Who hired you?”
Celia shook her head.
“I can't say.”
“Mrs. Grant.”
“They'll kill him.”
The detective leaned closer.
“Who?”
Celia finally looked at him.
“Rafael Rossi.”
The detective's face hardened.
Then Celia whispered something else.
“But he wasn't the one who planned it.”
“Who was?”
Celia looked toward the parking lot.
Her voice became barely audible.
“The man who planned it…”
She swallowed.
“…was Marcus Thorne.”
THE IMPOSSIBLE ACCUSATION
The detective stared.
“Are you sure?”
Celia nodded.
“He knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That Isabella was going to attack Khloe.”
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why would he allow it?”
Celia shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Did you hear him say anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“He said…”
She hesitated.
“He said the baby couldn't be born.”
The detective went silent.
Celia began crying again.
“I didn't know what it meant.”
THE FINAL SHOCK
That evening, Marcus returned to Khloe's room.
She was awake.
He smiled when he saw her.
“Hey.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Marcus.”
He took her hand.
“How are you feeling?”
“Terrible.”
He smiled faintly.
“That's fair.”
She squeezed his fingers.
“Is the baby okay?”
“Yes.”
“Is Isabella arrested?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Not yet.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the police are investigating.”
“Marcus.”
“Yes?”
“She tried to kill our baby.”
“I know.”
“You believe me?”
Marcus looked directly into her eyes.
“I saw the recording.”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“Then you know.”
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“There is something I need to tell you.”
Khloe opened her eyes.
“What?”
Marcus looked frightened.
“I found something in the security footage.”
“What?”
“Someone entered the room after Isabella left.”
Khloe's face changed.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
“Was it Daniel?”
Marcus froze.
“How do you know about Daniel?”
Khloe stared at him.
“I saw him that night.”
“When?”
“Before Isabella attacked me.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“What did he say?”
Khloe swallowed.
“He told Isabella…”
She stopped.
Marcus leaned closer.
“What?”
Khloe whispered:
“Make sure she doesn't deliver the baby.”
Silence.
Marcus's face went white.
Then Khloe asked:
“Marcus?”
He didn't answer.
Because he suddenly remembered something.
A conversation from six months earlier.
A conversation he had completely forgotten.
Daniel had asked him:
“If Khloe dies during childbirth, who inherits the Thorne estate?”
Marcus had laughed at the question.
He had thought it was a joke.
Now—
it wasn't.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a distorted voice whispered:
“Now you know.”
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at Khloe.
She stared back.
And neither of them noticed the tiny red light blinking above the hospital door.
Someone was recording them.
Someone had been listening.
And whoever was behind the attack had just realized one terrible thing:
May you like
The security footage had survived.
But so had Khloe.
