CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERAS

CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERAS
The red light above the hospital door blinked once.
Then disappeared.
Nathan Parker stood alone in the security room.
He had seen enough.
The hidden camera.
The missing footage.
Daniel Voss entering the suite.
The anonymous messages.
And now—
someone had been watching Marcus and Khloe from inside the hospital.
Nathan removed the drive from the computer.
He placed it inside his jacket.
Then he turned toward the door.
It opened.
Marcus stood there.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“You knew.”
Nathan's expression remained calm.
“Knew what?”
“That someone was targeting my wife.”
Nathan didn't answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew before tonight.”
“I suspected.”
“You copied the footage.”
“Yes.”
“You knew someone accessed the cameras.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel was in the corridor.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“How did you know?”
Marcus stared at him.
“You're not the only one watching.”
Nathan studied him.
Then quietly said:
“You need to sit down.”
Marcus didn't.
“Tell me everything.”
Nathan locked the security room door.
Then turned off the monitors.
“You're not ready.”
Marcus's voice hardened.
“Try me.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You remember the name Nathan Parker?”
Marcus frowned.
“Yes.”
“Do you know who I am?”
“You're the head of hospital security.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He reached beneath his shirt.
A silver chain hung around his neck.
At the end of it was a small old photograph.
Marcus stared.
His face changed.
“That…”
Nathan removed the photograph.
It showed a much younger man standing beside Marcus's father.
Marcus's father had one arm around his shoulder.
Marcus looked at the man.
Then back at Nathan.
“That's my father's brother.”
Nathan nodded.
“My name isn't Nathan Parker.”
He paused.
“My name is Nathan Thorne.”
Marcus went completely still.
THE UNCLE WHO DISAPPEARED
Marcus stared at him.
“No.”
Nathan didn't move.
“You died.”
“No.”
“My father told me you were dead.”
“He lied.”
Marcus stepped backward.
“When?”
“Twenty-four years ago.”
“Why?”
Nathan looked at the photograph.
“Because I discovered what your father was doing.”
“What was he doing?”
“Stealing.”
Marcus frowned.
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
Nathan walked toward the desk.
He placed the photograph down.
“Your grandfather created the Thorne fortune honestly.”
“He built hotels.”
“He built trust.”
“Your father inherited both.”
Nathan's voice became colder.
“And destroyed the second.”
Marcus remained silent.
“Your father started moving money through shell companies.”
“Then he created offshore accounts.”
“Then he began buying politicians.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I never knew.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
“What happened?”
Nathan looked toward the monitors.
“I confronted him.”
“And?”
“He gave me a choice.”
Marcus waited.
“Disappear.”
Nathan's eyes hardened.
“Or become part of the family.”
THE NIGHT NATHAN LEFT
Twenty-four years earlier, Nathan had been thirty-six.
He had a wife.
A daughter.
A successful career.
And a family name that meant everything.
Until one night, he discovered a file inside his brother's office.
The file contained financial records.
Payments.
Bribes.
False identities.
And one document that terrified him.
A life insurance policy.
The beneficiary was Marcus's father.
The insured person was—
Nathan.
Nathan had confronted his brother.
“You're planning to kill me.”
His brother had smiled.
“You've become inconvenient.”
Nathan remembered that smile even after two decades.
“So I disappeared.”
“Where did you go?”
“Everywhere.”
“Why didn't you come back?”
“Because they threatened my wife.”
Marcus's eyes widened.
“What happened to her?”
Nathan looked down.
“She died.”
Silence.
Marcus swallowed.
“And your daughter?”
Nathan didn't answer.
Marcus realized.
“She's dead too.”
Nathan nodded.
“I lost everything.”
He picked up the photograph.
“So I made sure the Thorne family lost something too.”
“What?”
“Their ability to find me.”
WHY HE CAME BACK
Marcus looked at him.
“Why now?”
Nathan's answer was immediate.
“Khloe.”
Marcus frowned.
“You knew her?”
“I've known her since she was a child.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Your mother trusted me.”
Marcus's face changed.
“My mother?”
Nathan nodded.
“She knew your father was dangerous.”
“She asked me to watch over Khloe.”
Marcus stared.
“Why Khloe?”
“Because she was the only person in the family who still had a conscience.”
Marcus looked away.
Nathan continued.
“Your mother knew what would happen if your father ever lost control.”
“What would happen?”
“He would destroy anyone standing between him and the money.”
Marcus looked at him.
“My father is dead.”
Nathan smiled bitterly.
“Dead men can leave living instructions.”
THE SECRET CAMERA
Marcus remembered the footage.
“The hidden camera.”
Nathan nodded.
“I installed it.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“Why?”
“Because someone was already watching Khloe.”
Marcus stared.
“Who?”
“I didn't know.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know whether you were involved.”
Marcus looked offended.
“You thought I would hurt my wife?”
“I thought you might know more than you admitted.”
“I didn't.”
“I know that now.”
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“How?”
“Because you reacted exactly like a man who just discovered his entire life is a lie.”
Marcus sat down.
Nathan continued:
“The camera wasn't installed because of Isabella.”
“Then why?”
“Because Isabella was only the latest threat.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“How many threats?”
Nathan looked at him.
“Seven.”
Marcus went silent.
“Seven?”
“Seven incidents in nine months.”
Nathan counted them.
“Your wife's car brakes were tampered with.”
“Her medication was switched.”
“Someone accessed her medical records.”
“Her personal assistant was bribed.”
“Her phone was cloned.”
“Someone followed her from the estate.”
“And three weeks ago…”
He paused.
“…someone tried to enter her bedroom.”
Marcus stared.
“Why didn't Khloe tell me?”
“Because she didn't know.”
Nathan leaned closer.
“She thought they were coincidences.”
Marcus looked sick.
“They weren't.”
“No.”
THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH
Nathan opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Marcus looked at them.
Khloe's car.
A broken brake line.
A photograph of her leaving a clinic.
A man standing outside her house.
A screenshot of her medical records.
Then one photograph made Marcus freeze.
It showed Isabella.
Standing beside Daniel Voss.
Marcus stared.
“When was this taken?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Where?”
“Your father's old office.”
Marcus looked at him.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
“That building has been locked for years.”
Nathan's expression remained serious.
“It isn't locked.”
Marcus swallowed.
“Who owns it?”
“You do.”
THE OLD OFFICE
Marcus had not entered the building in fifteen years.
It stood on the edge of downtown.
A forgotten tower surrounded by newer skyscrapers.
The Thorne family's first corporate headquarters.
The place where Marcus's grandfather had built the original company.
The place where Nathan had confronted his brother.
The place where Nathan's wife had once worked.
At midnight, Marcus and Nathan entered through the back entrance.
The building smelled of dust and old paper.
Nathan carried a flashlight.
Marcus walked behind him.
“Why bring me here?”
“Because this is where the story began.”
“What story?”
“The one about your family.”
They reached the twentieth floor.
The elevator stopped.
Nathan opened an old office.
The room was empty.
Except for one desk.
Marcus recognized it.
His father's.
Nathan walked toward it.
He pressed a hidden button.
A panel opened.
Inside was a safe.
Marcus stared.
“How did you know?”
“I helped install it.”
Nathan entered a combination.
The safe opened.
Inside was a box.
Nathan removed it.
Marcus asked:
“What is that?”
Nathan opened the box.
Documents.
Photographs.
A cassette tape.
And a letter.
Marcus picked up the letter.
The handwriting belonged to his father.
He read:
If Nathan ever returns, don't let him reach the girl.
Marcus looked up.
“The girl?”
Nathan nodded.
“Khloe.”
THE FIRST SECRET
Marcus stared at him.
“Why was my father afraid of Khloe?”
Nathan shook his head.
“He wasn't afraid of her.”
“Then what?”
“He was afraid of what she could inherit.”
Marcus frowned.
“She wasn't supposed to inherit anything.”
Nathan looked at him.
“That is what you were told.”
“What are you saying?”
“Your grandfather left something behind.”
“What?”
“Not money.”
Nathan opened another document.
“A controlling interest.”
Marcus's eyes widened.
“In what?”
“The Thorne Foundation.”
“That foundation has almost no assets.”
“Now.”
Nathan pointed at the document.
“Twenty-five years ago, it controlled nearly forty percent of the family's private holdings.”
Marcus stared.
“Where did it go?”
“Your father transferred it.”
“To whom?”
Nathan looked at him.
“To Khloe's mother.”
Marcus froze.
THE MARRIAGE
Marcus whispered:
“My mother-in-law?”
Nathan nodded.
“Your father made a deal with her.”
“What kind of deal?”
“She agreed to protect Khloe.”
“From what?”
“From him.”
Marcus felt the room spin.
“So my marriage…”
“Wasn't an accident.”
“What?”
Nathan looked directly at him.
“Your father wanted Khloe inside the family.”
Marcus's face went pale.
“Why?”
“Because he needed access to the trust.”
Marcus stepped backward.
“You're saying my father arranged my marriage?”
“No.”
Nathan paused.
“He manipulated the circumstances.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“He knew you loved Khloe.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“He knew you would marry her.”
Marcus looked at the documents.
“And then?”
“Then the trust would become accessible.”
Marcus clenched his fists.
“What happened?”
“Your mother stopped him.”
“How?”
“She moved the controlling shares into a protected trust.”
Marcus stared.
“Whose name?”
Nathan looked at him.
“Khloe's.”
Silence.
THE REAL REASON FOR THE ATTACK
Marcus finally understood.
“The baby.”
Nathan nodded.
“If Khloe dies before the child is born…”
Marcus couldn't finish.
“The trust changes.”
“How?”
“Your father created a succession clause.”
Marcus stared.
“Who becomes beneficiary?”
Nathan's voice was quiet.
“The child.”
Marcus's face changed.
“Then why kill Khloe?”
“To control the child.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Isabella?”
“She's useful.”
“Daniel?”
“Also useful.”
“Who is behind them?”
Nathan didn't answer.
Marcus looked at him.
“Who?”
Nathan finally spoke.
“The person who benefits most if Khloe dies.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Nathan looked at him.
“You.”
Marcus froze.
THE ACCUSATION
Marcus stared at Nathan.
“You think I want my wife dead?”
“No.”
“Then why say that?”
“Because legally, you're the next person in line.”
Marcus's voice became cold.
“I don't want the money.”
“Maybe.”
“But someone wants everyone else to believe you do.”
Marcus looked at the documents.
“If Khloe dies…”
“You inherit temporarily.”
“And then?”
“If the baby dies…”
Nathan stopped.
Marcus whispered:
“I become the sole heir.”
“Yes.”
Marcus stepped away.
“That makes me the perfect suspect.”
Nathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
Marcus looked at him.
“So someone is building a case against me.”
“Yes.”
“Isabella.”
“She's helping.”
“Daniel.”
“Probably.”
“And my father's old network.”
Nathan nodded.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“They're framing me.”
Nathan corrected him.
“No.”
He pointed toward the documents.
“They're giving you every reason to do it.”
THE SECOND CAMERA
Nathan pulled out another drive.
Marcus looked at him.
“What now?”
“This.”
He connected it.
A video appeared.
It showed Isabella entering a private office.
She was speaking to someone.
The person's face was hidden.
Isabella said:
“I did what you asked.”
The voice answered:
“Did she survive?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Isabella looked confused.
“You said you wanted her dead.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Why?”
“Because a dead woman cannot be controlled.”
Isabella hesitated.
“What do you want?”
The voice answered:
“The baby.”
Marcus's face hardened.
Then the figure turned slightly.
The image became clearer.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Nathan watched him.
“You know him.”
Marcus whispered:
“No.”
The screen froze.
The man's face was visible.
Marcus stared.
It was someone he had trusted for twenty years.
Someone who had attended his wedding.
Someone who had held Khloe's hand when she announced her pregnancy.
Someone who had called himself family.
Marcus whispered:
“That's impossible.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Nothing is impossible anymore.”
THE MAN IN THE RECORDING
Marcus stepped toward the screen.
“That's my uncle.”
Nathan nodded.
“Adrian.”
“But Adrian died.”
Nathan smiled bitterly.
“No.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
“Adrian didn't die.”
“Then where is he?”
Nathan looked toward the dark window.
“That's what I've been trying to find out for twenty-four years.”
Marcus stared.
“You said your brother wanted you dead.”
“Yes.”
“You said he was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would he protect Khloe?”
Nathan shook his head.
“He isn't protecting her.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“Then what?”
Nathan looked at the frozen image.
“He's waiting for the baby to be born.”
Marcus felt a chill.
“For what?”
Nathan's answer was barely a whisper.
“To claim the inheritance.”
THE FINAL MESSAGE
At 3:17 a.m., Marcus's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT HER.
Another appeared.
NOW SHE WILL PAY FOR YOUR CHOICE.
Marcus typed:
WHO ARE YOU?
The response arrived.
ASK NATHAN WHAT HE DID TWENTY-FOUR YEARS AGO.
Marcus slowly looked at Nathan.
Nathan's face had gone pale.
Marcus stared.
“What did you do?”
Nathan didn't answer.
“Nathan.”
Silence.
“What did you do?”
Nathan finally whispered:
“I wasn't the one who disappeared.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
Nathan looked toward the security monitors.
“I didn't leave the family.”
“I was forced out.”
“By whom?”
Nathan looked at Marcus.
“Your mother.”
Marcus froze.
“My mother?”
Nathan nodded.
“She knew what your father was doing.”
“She knew about Adrian.”
“She knew about the trust.”
“And she knew something else.”
“What?”
Nathan's eyes filled with something Marcus had never seen before.
Fear.
“She knew Khloe wasn't supposed to marry you.”
Marcus stared.
“Why?”
Nathan looked away.
“Because your mother knew exactly who Khloe's real father was.”
Marcus's blood turned cold.
“Who?”
Nathan didn't answer.
The hospital alarm suddenly sounded.
Marcus's phone rang.
It was the emergency department.
He answered.
A nurse screamed:
“Mr. Thorne, you need to come back immediately!”
Marcus stood.
“What happened?”
“Mrs. Thorne is awake.”
Relief crossed his face.
Then the nurse continued:
“But she says someone is inside her room.”
Marcus's blood froze.
“Who?”
The nurse began crying.
“She says…”
A pause.
“She says it's your father.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
“My father is dead.”
The nurse whispered:
“That's what I told her.”
Then the line went silent.
Marcus looked at Nathan.
Nathan had already picked up his coat.
“Let's go.”
They ran toward the elevator.
Behind them, the security monitors flickered.
One by one, every screen went black.
Except one.
Camera 14.
The hallway outside Khloe's room.
A man in a dark suit stood beside the door.
He slowly turned toward the camera.
Then smiled.
Nathan stopped.
Marcus looked at the screen.
The man's face was clear.
It was Adrian Thorne.
Marcus's supposedly dead uncle.
And in his hand—
was a photograph of Khloe as a little girl.
The elevator doors closed.
Neither man spoke.
Because they both understood the same thing.
The attack in the hospital had never been the beginning.
It was the warning.
May you like
And whoever was behind it had been waiting for Khloe—
for twenty-four years.
