CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN BEHIND ISABELLA

CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN BEHIND ISABELLA
The hospital hallway was empty.
Too empty.
Marcus stood beside Khloe, staring at the sentence left behind by Dr. Edward Vale.
YOU DIDN'T BETRAY YOUR WIFE, MARCUS.
YOU BETRAYED THE WRONG MAN.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Khloe looked at him.
“Who is the wrong man?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Nathan picked up the document.
His expression was grim.
“I do.”
Marcus turned.
“Who?”
Nathan looked toward the dark corridor.
“The man your father feared.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“My father feared Adrian.”
“No.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Adrian feared someone.”
“Who?”
Nathan didn't answer.
A woman's voice came from behind them.
“I can tell you.”
They turned.
Isabella stood at the end of the hallway.
Her crimson dress was torn at the shoulder.
Her makeup was streaked with tears.
For the first time, there was no arrogance in her expression.
No calculated smile.
No socialite confidence.
She looked terrified.
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Where did you go?”
She looked at Khloe.
“I was taken.”
“By whom?”
Isabella swallowed.
“By the woman who created me.”
Khloe frowned.
“Created you?”
Isabella nodded.
“Not literally.”
She looked at Marcus.
“But almost.”
THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE ISABELLA
Isabella walked into the room.
Nathan immediately locked the door.
Marcus remained between her and Khloe.
“Start talking.”
Isabella looked at the document.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
“Who wrote it?”
Isabella's eyes moved toward the ceiling.
“The woman who taught me how to destroy people.”
Khloe's voice was cold.
“Her name.”
Isabella hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Helena Vale.”
Nathan's face changed.
Marcus frowned.
“Who is Helena Vale?”
Nathan looked at him.
“You've never heard that name?”
“No.”
“She was the most powerful private financier in Europe twenty-five years ago.”
Marcus stared.
“What happened to her?”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“After your grandfather died.”
Khloe's eyes narrowed.
“Is she related to Dr. Edward Vale?”
Isabella nodded.
“His sister.”
Silence.
Nathan whispered:
“Then she's alive.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at Isabella.
“Where?”
Isabella shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You were working for her.”
“I was.”
“You don't know where she is?”
“She never stayed in one place.”
“Then how did she contact you?”
“Through intermediaries.”
Marcus stared.
“Who?”
Isabella looked at him.
“Your mother.”
THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
Khloe immediately remembered the photograph.
Her mother.
Marcus's mother.
The newborn.
She turned toward Isabella.
“My mother worked for Helena?”
“No.”
“Then why did you say her name?”
“Because she was one of Helena's first victims.”
Marcus froze.
“What happened?”
Isabella looked down.
“Your mother discovered the original succession plan.”
“She knew about the trust.”
“She knew everything.”
“Then why did she disappear?”
“Because Helena gave her a choice.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“What choice?”
“Leave the Thorne family alive…”
Isabella paused.
“…or stay and watch everyone she loved die.”
Marcus stared.
“She chose to leave.”
“Yes.”
Khloe whispered:
“She protected me.”
“Yes.”
“From Helena?”
“From everyone.”
Khloe's hand tightened around her stomach.
“Then why did she never come back?”
Isabella looked at her.
“Because she knew Helena was waiting.”
THE FIRST MEETING
Isabella sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“I met Helena when I was nineteen.”
Marcus watched her carefully.
“My father had lost everything.”
She gave a bitter smile.
“Debt. Gambling. Bad investments.”
“And Helena?”
“She paid everything.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted something.”
“What?”
“Me.”
Khloe frowned.
“Why you?”
“Because I was ambitious.”
Isabella's voice became quiet.
“She told me I had one quality most people didn't.”
“What?”
“Nothing frightened me.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You attacked my wife.”
Isabella looked at him.
“Because Helena taught me that fear was weakness.”
Khloe stared.
“And you believed her.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Until I realized I wasn't her partner.”
She looked at the floor.
“I was her property.”
THE FIRST COMMAND
Isabella remembered the first envelope.
She had been twenty-one.
Inside was a photograph of Marcus.
He was standing outside a university building.
Young.
Carefree.
Smiling.
Beside him was Khloe.
They were not together yet.
They hadn't even met properly.
But Helena had circled Marcus's face.
“Study him,” Helena had said.
“Why?”
“Because one day you'll marry him.”
Isabella had laughed.
“I don't know him.”
“You will.”
“And if he doesn't want me?”
Helena had smiled.
“He will.”
“How?”
“Because men like Marcus don't choose love.”
Isabella had frowned.
“What do they choose?”
“Security.”
“Money?”
“Family.”
“And if he loves someone else?”
Helena's smile disappeared.
“Then remove her.”
Isabella had looked at the photograph again.
At the time, she thought it was a game.
She had no idea she had just been assigned a future husband.
THE WOMAN WHO CREATED THE SCANDAL
Years later, Helena gave Isabella another file.
It contained photographs of Khloe.
Her family.
Her school.
Her friends.
Her financial history.
Her mother's death.
Every detail.
Isabella stared.
“Why her?”
Helena answered:
“Because she is the last legitimate branch of the Thorne bloodline.”
“But Marcus loves her.”
“I know.”
“And if he marries her?”
“Then she becomes untouchable.”
“So what do I do?”
“Become indispensable.”
Isabella understood.
She didn't have to destroy Khloe immediately.
She had to become Marcus's confidante.
His business partner.
His emotional escape.
His public companion.
She had to make Khloe feel threatened.
Not enough to leave.
Just enough to become unstable.
Just enough for the family to question her.
Just enough to make Marcus doubt her.
And she succeeded.
THE NIGHT MARCUS SIGNED
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You were targeted before we married.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I didn't know.”
Isabella interrupted.
“You weren't supposed to.”
Khloe looked at her.
“What happened after Marcus signed the agreement?”
“Helena celebrated.”
“Why?”
“Because she had what she wanted.”
“What?”
“Control.”
Marcus frowned.
“Over me?”
“No.”
Isabella looked at Khloe.
“Over you.”
Khloe's expression hardened.
“How?”
“The agreement Marcus signed gave Helena access to your legal records.”
Khloe froze.
“My records?”
“Medical.”
“Financial.”
“Family.”
“Everything.”
Marcus looked horrified.
“I never authorized that.”
“You did.”
“I didn't know.”
“You signed it.”
The words landed heavily.
Khloe closed her eyes.
Another betrayal.
Another document.
Another secret.
Another reminder that her husband had unknowingly opened doors for the woman trying to destroy her.
HELENA'S REAL PLAN
Nathan interrupted.
“Why did Helena want Khloe's records?”
Isabella looked at him.
“To find the child.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“What?”
“Helena knew Khloe was pregnant before Marcus did.”
Marcus froze.
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“How?”
“Your medical records were being copied.”
“By whom?”
“Dr. Vale.”
Khloe's face went pale.
“The doctor.”
“Yes.”
“He worked for Helena?”
“He still does.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then why did he tell us about the trust?”
Isabella smiled bitterly.
“Because everything he told you was true.”
Marcus stared.
“Why would he help us?”
“Because Helena wants the truth exposed.”
Khloe frowned.
“Why?”
Isabella's answer was chilling.
“Because Helena isn't trying to steal the fortune.”
“Then what?”
“She wants the fortune destroyed.”
Silence.
THE WOMAN WHO HATED THE THORNES
Isabella explained.
Helena's family had once been partners with the Thornes.
Thirty years earlier, the two families had controlled a financial empire together.
Then Marcus's grandfather had betrayed them.
He had taken their assets.
Destroyed their companies.
And forced Helena's father into bankruptcy.
Helena had watched her family collapse.
Her father died.
Her mother disappeared.
Her brother was imprisoned.
And Helena survived.
She didn't forgive.
She built herself again.
Quietly.
Patiently.
For decades.
Her plan wasn't to own the Thorne fortune.
It was to make the Thorne family destroy itself.
Marcus stared.
“She wanted us to fight each other.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew the family would sacrifice anyone for money.”
Khloe looked at him.
“And she was right.”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
ISABELLA'S REAL ROLE
Khloe turned to Isabella.
“You were supposed to marry Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“Take my place.”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
Isabella hesitated.
“Then I would have signed away the remaining trust.”
“To Helena?”
“No.”
“To the government.”
Khloe frowned.
“What?”
Isabella explained.
“Helena wanted the Thorne assets frozen.”
“Why?”
“To expose the criminal structure beneath them.”
Marcus looked at Nathan.
“The companies.”
Nathan nodded.
“Shell companies.”
“Political payments.”
“Money laundering.”
“Hidden accounts.”
Marcus's face hardened.
“So the empire was dirty.”
“Very.”
Isabella continued.
“Helena planned to expose everything.”
“And then?”
“The Thorne empire would collapse.”
Marcus stared.
“And you?”
“I would disappear.”
“Rich?”
Isabella shook her head.
“Dead.”
THE MOMENT SHE UNDERSTOOD
Isabella remembered the night she finally understood she was disposable.
Helena had summoned her.
There was another photograph on the table.
Isabella.
Marcus.
Khloe.
And the baby.
Helena had drawn a red circle around Isabella's face.
“What's this?” Isabella had asked.
“Your replacement.”
“Who?”
Helena didn't answer.
Instead, she placed another photograph on the table.
A young woman.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Confident.
Isabella stared.
“Who is she?”
“Your successor.”
“What does that mean?”
“You are no longer necessary.”
Isabella's heart had stopped.
“After everything I've done?”
Helena had smiled.
“Exactly.”
“Then why keep me alive?”
“I haven't decided.”
That was the moment Isabella realized the truth.
She had spent years thinking she was the predator.
She had been prey the entire time.
THE WOMAN IN THE CAR
Isabella finally told them where Helena had last contacted her.
“A private warehouse.”
“Where?”
“Outside the city.”
“Address?”
She gave it.
Nathan immediately recognized it.
“That's one of the Thorne storage facilities.”
Marcus stared.
“How did Helena get access?”
“Your father gave it to her.”
Marcus froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Isabella looked at him.
“Your father and Helena have been working together.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“I saw them.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“Where?”
“At the old Thorne estate.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Khloe stepped between them.
“Marcus.”
He looked at her.
“My father is dead.”
Isabella whispered:
“No.”
“He's alive.”
THE MAN IN THE SHADOW
Nathan stepped toward Isabella.
“You said Helena worked with Marcus's father.”
“Yes.”
“Then who was the man in the photograph?”
“I don't know.”
“You saw him?”
“Yes.”
“Describe him.”
Isabella hesitated.
“Tall.”
“Age?”
“Late fifties.”
“Hair?”
“Gray.”
“Eyes?”
“Brown.”
Nathan's face changed.
“What?”
Isabella looked at him.
“What is it?”
Nathan whispered:
“That's not Marcus's father.”
Marcus stared.
“Then who?”
Nathan looked at the old photograph.
“The fourth Thorne.”
Khloe's heart sank.
“The man who never lost his claim.”
Nathan nodded.
“Richard.”
THE FOURTH THORNE
Marcus stared at the name.
“Richard died.”
“No body.”
“Plane crash.”
“No wreckage.”
“You said he disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't anyone search?”
Nathan looked at him.
“Because your grandfather wanted him gone.”
Marcus froze.
“Why?”
“Richard knew about the original trust.”
“What else?”
“He knew your grandfather had altered the inheritance.”
“And?”
“He was the only person who could challenge it.”
Marcus's voice became cold.
“So everyone believed he died.”
Nathan nodded.
“And Helena found him.”
Khloe understood.
“That's the man behind Isabella.”
“Yes.”
“The fourth Thorne.”
“The forgotten heir.”
“The man who wants the fortune.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No.”
“What then?”
“He wants revenge.”
THE LAST MESSAGE
Isabella's phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
One message.
No number.
Just a sentence.
YOU HAVE TALKED TOO MUCH.
Isabella's face went white.
Another message appeared.
LOOK OUTSIDE.
Marcus moved toward the window.
A black vehicle was parked across the street.
The lights were off.
Nathan pulled Khloe away.
The phone vibrated again.
THE GAME ENDS TONIGHT.
Then—
the building's fire alarm screamed.
People began running through the halls.
Marcus grabbed Khloe's hand.
“Stay with me.”
They moved toward the emergency exit.
Isabella followed.
Nathan stayed behind.
“What are you doing?” Marcus shouted.
“Making sure nobody follows.”
The lights went out.
A gunshot echoed.
Khloe screamed.
Marcus pulled her against him.
Another shot.
Then silence.
When the emergency lights returned—
Nathan was gone.
Isabella was gone.
Only Marcus and Khloe remained.
On the floor was a single photograph.
Marcus picked it up.
It showed Helena.
Standing beside Richard Thorne.
And between them—
was Marcus's father.
All three men were alive.
All three were smiling.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
ONE MONTH BEFORE MARCUS AND KHLOE'S WEDDING.
Khloe stared at it.
“They knew.”
Marcus nodded.
“They knew everything.”
Then he noticed something else.
A handwritten sentence beneath the date.
His father's handwriting.
IF MARCUS MARRIES KHLOE, THE CHILD WILL BE BORN.
And underneath:
IF THE CHILD IS BORN, RICHARD LOSES HIS CLAIM.
Marcus's face went pale.
Khloe slowly looked at him.
“That's why they wanted me dead.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
He turned the photograph over again.
There was one final line.
THEY NEVER WANTED THE CHILD DEAD.
Khloe stared.
“Then what did they want?”
Marcus's voice trembled.
“They wanted the child born…”
He looked at her stomach.
“…so they could use the child to destroy the entire Thorne inheritance.”
A shadow moved behind the glass doors.
Someone was standing outside.
Watching them.
Then the shadow disappeared.
And Khloe realized something terrifying.
Isabella had never been the woman behind the plan.
She had only been the most visible piece.
The real architect had been moving people for decades.
Her husband.
Her father-in-law.
Adrian.
Isabella.
Even Marcus himself.
They had all been pieces on the same board.
And now the woman who had created the game had finally decided to step onto the board herself.
Helena Vale.
The woman who had spent twenty years waiting for revenge.
And she had one final move left.
May you like
A move that would force Khloe to choose between her child…
and the fortune that had nearly destroyed her family.
