CHAPTER 10 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE MARRIAGE

CHAPTER 10 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE MARRIAGE
The document was only three pages long.
Khloe had seen hundreds of legal documents in her life.
Trust agreements.
Property deeds.
Medical forms.
Prenuptial contracts.
Corporate filings.
None of them had ever frightened her as much as those three pages.
Because at the bottom of the final page was a signature she knew better than her own.
Marcus Thorne.
Her husband.
Her child's father.
The man who had promised, on their wedding night, that he would never make an important decision about their family without her.
And yet—
he had signed this.
Without telling her.
Khloe stared at the signature.
Her hands were cold.
“What is this?”
Marcus stood across the room.
He didn't answer.
Nathan looked at him.
“Marcus?”
Marcus's face had gone pale.
“I've never seen that version.”
Khloe slowly lifted the document.
“Don't lie to me.”
“I’m not.”
“Your signature is right there.”
“I know.”
“You signed it.”
Marcus swallowed.
“Yes.”
Khloe looked at him.
“When?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Three years ago.”
The room became silent.
Three years.
The exact year Isabella had entered his life.
The exact year the first attacks against Khloe's reputation had begun.
The exact year Marcus had started receiving secret documents about the Thorne inheritance.
Khloe's voice trembled.
“What did you sign?”
Marcus looked at the floor.
“A succession agreement.”
THE AGREEMENT
Khloe placed the document on the table.
“Read it aloud.”
Marcus didn't move.
“Marcus.”
He finally picked it up.
His voice was quiet.
“Section One states that the current Thorne heir may voluntarily relinquish any future claim to the Evelyn Trust.”
Khloe stared.
“Continue.”
“Section Two states that upon the death or incapacity of the recognized female heir, control of the trust may be transferred to an appointed male trustee.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“Who?”
Marcus didn't answer.
Khloe looked at the bottom.
There was a name.
Adrian Thorne.
Her heart sank.
“You signed away control.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I didn't know what it meant.”
“You signed it.”
“Yes.”
“You signed a document naming Adrian as trustee.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Khloe laughed bitterly.
“By signing away my rights?”
“I didn't know they were yours.”
“You knew there was a trust.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my family was connected to it.”
“Yes.”
“You knew people were investigating me.”
“Yes.”
“And you still signed.”
Marcus couldn't answer.
Khloe stepped backward.
Her hand went instinctively to her stomach.
“You promised me.”
“I know.”
“You promised you would never keep something like this from me.”
“I know.”
“And you did.”
“I was wrong.”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“You were afraid.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You were afraid of your father.”
“Yes.”
“You were afraid of losing your inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“You were afraid of the truth.”
“Yes.”
Khloe shook her head.
“But you weren't afraid of losing me.”
Marcus's eyes filled with regret.
“I was.”
“Then why did you sign?”
He whispered:
“Because I believed I was saving our marriage.”
THREE YEARS EARLIER
Marcus remembered the night.
Three years ago.
He had been sitting alone in his father's office.
A storm had been raging outside.
His father had placed a folder in front of him.
“You love her,” his father had said.
Marcus remembered laughing.
“Of course.”
His father had looked at him.
“Then sign this.”
Marcus had opened the folder.
He remembered the first page.
He remembered the legal language.
But not the details.
His father had explained:
“The Thorne family is unstable.”
“Someone is trying to destroy us.”
“Khloe's family is involved.”
“If something happens to you, this will protect her.”
Marcus had believed him.
He had signed.
Then his father had told him:
“Never show this to Khloe.”
Marcus had asked why.
His father had smiled.
“Because she doesn't need to know how dangerous this family really is.”
Marcus had obeyed.
For three years.
THE PART MARCUS NEVER SAW
Nathan took the document.
He examined the final page.
“This isn't the original.”
Marcus looked at him.
“What?”
Nathan pointed to the signature.
“The ink is real.”
“The paper is real.”
“The agreement is real.”
“But?”
“There is a missing page.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What page?”
Nathan turned to Marcus.
“The page that explained the condition.”
Marcus frowned.
“What condition?”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“The agreement only became valid if Khloe was declared legally incapable of managing the trust.”
Khloe stared.
“So the document wasn't supposed to control me.”
“No.”
“It was supposed to control Marcus.”
Nathan nodded.
Marcus looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because if Khloe became the recognized heir, you would become her legal protector.”
Marcus's face changed.
“And if I had signed this…”
“You would have been bound to Adrian.”
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You weren't signing away my inheritance.”
“No.”
“You were giving Adrian control over you.”
Marcus stared at the document.
“Why?”
Nathan answered:
“To make you the perfect weapon against your own wife.”
THE MISSING PAGE
Nathan opened the folder again.
There was a faint tear along the spine.
“The missing page was removed deliberately.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Who removed it?”
Nathan shook his head.
“Someone with access to the original.”
Khloe immediately thought of Isabella.
“Isabella.”
Marcus nodded.
“She had access.”
“But why would she keep the document?”
Nathan's expression became grim.
“Because she needed leverage.”
“Against Marcus?”
“Yes.”
Khloe looked at the signature again.
“She could have exposed him at any time.”
“She didn't.”
“Why?”
“Because the document was more valuable as a threat.”
Marcus clenched his fists.
“So she could control me.”
Nathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
Marcus whispered:
“And she did.”
THE FIRST LIE
Khloe turned toward Marcus.
“What else did you sign?”
Marcus froze.
“What?”
“Three years ago.”
“There were several documents.”
“How many?”
“I don't remember.”
“Try.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Five.”
Khloe's expression hardened.
“Five?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me what they were.”
“Financial protections.”
“That's not an answer.”
“A corporate agreement.”
“Which one?”
“I don't know.”
“Another.”
“A power-of-attorney document.”
Khloe's blood ran cold.
“For whom?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Adrian.”
Nathan cursed under his breath.
Khloe stepped away.
“You gave Adrian power of attorney?”
“Only temporarily.”
“For what?”
“I thought it was for the family companies.”
“And what was it really?”
Nathan opened another file.
“The trust.”
Marcus stared.
The realization struck him.
His father hadn't needed to force him.
Marcus had handed them the key himself.
THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT
Khloe remembered something.
Their prenuptial agreement.
She had always believed it was routine.
She asked Marcus:
“Who drafted our prenup?”
“My father's attorney.”
“Did you read it?”
“Yes.”
“Did I?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Khloe shook her head.
“I never saw the complete version.”
Marcus stared at her.
“What?”
“I remember signing it.”
“But?”
“The pages were already numbered.”
Khloe's voice became quiet.
“There were thirty-seven pages.”
Marcus nodded.
“There were thirty-eight.”
He froze.
“Thirty-eight?”
“One page was removed before I signed.”
Marcus stared.
“Which page?”
Nathan's face changed.
“The inheritance clause.”
Khloe looked at him.
“What did it say?”
Nathan answered:
“That if the marriage ended under specific circumstances, the Thorne family could challenge the spouse's claim to jointly acquired assets.”
Khloe's eyes narrowed.
“Specific circumstances?”
Nathan looked at Marcus.
“Infidelity.”
Silence.
Khloe understood.
If Marcus cheated—
if their marriage ended—
the family could use the clause to attack her financial rights.
And Isabella had been publicly linked to Marcus for years.
The trap had been built before Khloe even knew she was inside it.
THE QUESTION
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“Did you ever intend to leave me?”
“No.”
“Did you ever plan to marry Isabella?”
“No.”
“Did you ever sign anything promising her a position in the company?”
Marcus hesitated.
Khloe's face fell.
“What?”
“There was a letter.”
“What letter?”
“An engagement proposal.”
Her eyes widened.
“You proposed to Isabella?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“My father drafted it.”
“But you signed it.”
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.”
Khloe's voice became barely audible.
“Why?”
“I thought it was symbolic.”
“Symbolic?”
“He said it was part of a business arrangement.”
“With Isabella's family?”
“Yes.”
“Your father wanted you to marry her.”
“Yes.”
“And you signed the document.”
“Yes.”
Khloe stared at him.
“You didn't tell me.”
“I was trying to find a way out.”
“You could have told me.”
“I was afraid you'd leave.”
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“You should have been afraid.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I was.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You were afraid of losing control.”
THE LAST PAGE
Nathan suddenly found something inside the folder.
A folded sheet.
He opened it.
His face went pale.
“What?”
Marcus stepped closer.
Nathan handed it to him.
It was an amendment.
Signed by Marcus.
Dated one month after his wedding.
Khloe looked at it.
“What does it say?”
Marcus read silently.
Then his face collapsed.
Khloe took the paper from him.
The clause was simple.
In the event that Khloe Parker Thorne becomes pregnant, Marcus Thorne agrees to submit all questions concerning the child's inheritance to the appointed trustee of the Thorne family.
Khloe's hand trembled.
“You signed this after we married.”
Marcus whispered:
“Yes.”
“And before I became pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You gave someone else control over our child.”
“I didn't know.”
“You didn't know?”
“I thought it was temporary.”
“Temporary?”
Marcus's voice broke.
“I thought it was insurance.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Insurance against what?”
He couldn't answer.
Nathan did.
“Against Khloe inheriting the trust.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
The betrayal wasn't that Marcus had signed a document.
It was that he had repeatedly chosen ignorance because ignorance was easier than confronting his family.
He hadn't knowingly handed her to the wolves.
He had simply refused to look at the wolves.
And somehow, that hurt even more.
THE WOMAN WHO READ EVERYTHING
The door opened.
Isabella walked in.
Marcus immediately stood.
“What are you doing here?”
She looked at Khloe.
“I came to tell you the truth.”
Khloe laughed.
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“You've lied for three years.”
“I know.”
“You attacked me.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to destroy my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“And now you want to tell me the truth?”
Isabella looked at Marcus.
“Ask him.”
Khloe turned.
“Ask him what?”
Isabella's voice became cold.
“Ask your husband why he really signed the first agreement.”
Marcus stared at her.
“Don't.”
Isabella smiled.
“Tell her.”
Marcus shook his head.
Isabella looked at Khloe.
“He signed it because your father was going to expose him.”
Khloe froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“What did my father know?”
Isabella looked at Marcus.
“That he wasn't the biological father of your child.”
Marcus's face went white.
Khloe instinctively covered her stomach.
“That isn't true.”
Isabella smiled.
“That's what Marcus thought too.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“Enough.”
But Isabella continued.
“Marcus didn't sign the agreement to steal your inheritance.”
She looked directly at Khloe.
“He signed it because someone told him the baby wasn't his.”
Khloe stared at Marcus.
“Is that true?”
Marcus's silence was answer enough.
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
“You believed it?”
“I was shown evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“A DNA report.”
“Did you verify it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Marcus's voice broke.
“Because I was terrified.”
Khloe whispered:
“And you never told me.”
“No.”
She stepped away.
“You let me sleep beside you while you wondered if the child inside me belonged to you.”
Marcus looked destroyed.
“I was wrong.”
Khloe shook her head.
“You were my husband.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DNA
Nathan suddenly took the DNA report from Isabella.
He studied it.
Then he smiled.
Not kindly.
Not warmly.
Dangerously.
“This is fake.”
Isabella's face changed.
Marcus looked at him.
“How do you know?”
Nathan pointed to the laboratory code.
“This laboratory stopped using this identification system nine years ago.”
Marcus stared.
“So the report was fabricated.”
“Yes.”
Khloe looked at Isabella.
“You knew.”
Isabella said nothing.
“You knew the DNA report was fake.”
Silence.
Then Isabella whispered:
“Yes.”
Marcus stepped toward her.
“Why?”
“Because they told me to.”
“Who?”
Isabella looked toward the door.
Her face became terrified.
“I can't.”
“Who?”
She shook her head.
“If I say his name, he kills me.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
“You already told us someone was above Adrian.”
Isabella looked at Khloe.
Then at the child.
And whispered:
“He's already inside this hospital.”
THE MAN IN THE HALLWAY
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Approaching.
Everyone became silent.
The handle began to turn.
Nathan moved in front of Khloe.
Marcus stood beside him.
The door opened.
A hospital doctor entered.
He looked ordinary.
Gray hair.
White coat.
Glasses.
But Isabella immediately backed away.
Her face turned white.
“No.”
The doctor smiled.
“Good evening, Isabella.”
Marcus stared.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at him.
Then at Khloe.
Then at her stomach.
Finally, he smiled.
“My name is Dr. Edward Vale.”
Nathan's expression changed.
He knew the name.
Marcus noticed.
“You know him?”
Nathan's voice was barely audible.
“He was your grandfather's private physician.”
Khloe stared at the doctor.
“But he's supposed to be dead.”
Dr. Vale smiled.
“So was I.”
He closed the door behind him.
Then placed a thin black folder on the table.
Inside was a photograph.
A newborn baby.
Khloe stared.
The photograph had been taken twenty-three years ago.
Beside the baby stood her mother.
And behind them—
was Marcus's grandfather.
Alive.
Smiling.
And holding a document in his hand.
The document had one title:
THE ORIGINAL SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
Dr. Vale looked at Khloe.
“You've been searching for the wrong heir.”
Khloe's heart pounded.
“Then who is the real heir?”
The doctor smiled.
“You.”
Khloe stared.
“But you just said—”
“I said you were searching for the wrong heir.”
He pointed to her stomach.
“The child isn't the heir.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then what is my child?”
Dr. Vale's expression became cold.
“The key.”
The lights suddenly went out.
A scream came from the hallway.
Then a gunshot.
When the emergency lights returned—
Dr. Vale was gone.
So was Isabella.
Only Marcus, Nathan, and Khloe remained.
And on the table was one final document.
A document Marcus had signed three years earlier.
Except this time, there was something written beneath his signature.
In handwriting none of them recognized:
YOU DIDN'T BETRAY YOUR WIFE, MARCUS.
YOU BETRAYED THE WRONG MAN.
Khloe stared at the words.
Then slowly looked at Marcus.
For the first time since their marriage began—
she wondered whether the man she had been fighting against all these years had never been her husband.
Perhaps Marcus had only been another prisoner.
And perhaps the person who had truly controlled their marriage—
had been waiting for them to discover the truth.
Because the real betrayal had never been between husband and wife.
May you like
It had been inside the entire Thorne family.
And someone was about to reveal why.
