CHAPTER 12 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BURNED

CHAPTER 12 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BURNED

The first alarm sounded at 2:13 a.m.

At first, Khloe thought it was another false warning.

Hospitals had alarms.

Fire drills.

Emergency tests.

Mechanical failures.

She had heard them before.

But then she smelled smoke.

Not the faint smell of overheated wires.

Not plastic.

Not electrical insulation.

Gasoline.

Khloe's eyes widened.

“Marcus.”

He was already standing.

“What?”

“Something's burning.”

A second later, the lights went out.

The hallway outside erupted in screams.

Patients stumbled through the darkness.

Nurses shouted.

Doors slammed.

Somewhere downstairs, glass shattered.

Then the emergency speakers crackled.

“EVACUATE THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY.”

Marcus grabbed Khloe's hand.

“Stay with me.”

They moved toward the exit.

But before they reached it—

the doors locked.

Marcus pulled the handle.

Nothing.

He tried again.

“It's locked.”

Khloe stared at him.

“Why would the emergency doors lock?”

Marcus's face changed.

“They wouldn't.”

Nathan had taught him enough about hospital systems to know that.

Emergency exits were designed to unlock automatically during a fire.

Unless someone had overridden the system.

Marcus looked toward the security panel.

“This isn't an accident.”

Khloe's stomach tightened.

“No.”

Someone had started the fire.

And someone had trapped them inside.

THE FIRE

Smoke poured beneath the doors.

Marcus wrapped his jacket around Khloe's shoulders.

“Cover your mouth.”

She did.

The baby moved violently beneath her ribs.

Khloe pressed a hand against her stomach.

“It's okay.”

Marcus looked at her.

“We're getting out.”

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

“How?”

“Because I refuse to let them win.”

He pulled out his phone.

No signal.

The hospital network was down.

Khloe looked around.

“What about Nathan?”

Marcus's expression darkened.

“He should have called.”

“He's missing.”

“I know.”

“Isabella too.”

“I know.”

Khloe looked at him.

“What if they were taken?”

Marcus didn't answer.

Then something crashed in the corridor.

A nurse screamed.

Marcus pulled Khloe behind him.

The fire was spreading.

Fast.

Too fast.

Someone had used accelerant.

The flames climbed the walls.

A sprinkler system activated.

Then stopped.

Marcus stared.

“The sprinklers were disabled.”

Khloe whispered:

“This was planned.”

THE LOCKED ARCHIVE

Khloe suddenly remembered.

Room 417.

The archive.

The original documents.

The photograph.

The files.

Everything they had discovered was still inside.

“We have to go back.”

Marcus stared at her.

“No.”

“The records.”

“Forget them.”

“The original succession document is in there.”

“It doesn't matter.”

“It does.”

“Khloe, there's a fire.”

“If we leave the evidence, they'll erase everything.”

Marcus grabbed her shoulders.

“Listen to me.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“You are more important than any document.”

Khloe stared at him.

“I know.”

“Then we're leaving.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

“If we leave without the evidence, they'll win.”

She turned toward the smoke.

“I've spent my whole life watching people erase pieces of my family.”

“My mother.”

“My identity.”

“My inheritance.”

“My marriage.”

“I'm not letting them erase the truth too.”

Marcus looked at her.

Then nodded.

“Then we go together.”

ROOM 417

They reached the archive.

The door was already open.

Smoke filled the room.

The shelves were burning.

Documents fell from the walls.

Khloe coughed.

Marcus wrapped an arm around her.

“Find what matters.”

Khloe scanned the shelves.

“Succession.”

Nothing.

“Trust.”

Nothing.

“Evelyn.”

Nothing.

The fire spread across the ceiling.

Marcus shouted:

“Khloe!”

She turned.

He pointed toward a metal cabinet.

“That's locked.”

Khloe remembered the key.

She pulled it from her pocket.

It fit.

Inside was a small metal box.

She opened it.

Three objects.

A black USB drive.

A wedding ring.

And a sealed envelope.

Khloe stared at the ring.

She recognized it.

Her mother's.

She picked it up.

The inside contained an engraving.

E.T. — R.T.

Khloe frowned.

“R.T.”

Marcus looked at it.

“Richard Thorne.”

Khloe's heart stopped.

Her mother had been connected to Richard.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was one handwritten letter.

The first sentence made her blood run cold.

If you are reading this, the fire has already begun.

EVELYN'S LETTER

Khloe read aloud.

“Richard was never the enemy.”

Marcus stared.

“What?”

She continued.

“Your grandfather created the original succession agreement with one purpose: to protect the female bloodline.”

Nathan had been right.

The trust wasn't originally about money.

It was protection.

Khloe kept reading.

“When Richard discovered what the family intended to do to the trust, he tried to stop them.”

“Your grandfather ordered him removed.”

“Richard survived.”

Marcus stared at the burning shelves.

“He survived.”

Khloe nodded.

The letter continued.

“Helena found Richard.”

“She believed he wanted revenge.”

“But she was wrong.”

Khloe paused.

“What?”

Marcus looked at her.

“What does it say?”

Khloe continued.

“Richard wanted to expose the truth.”

“Helena wanted destruction.”

“Those goals were never the same.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“So Helena is the real enemy.”

“Maybe.”

Khloe read the next line.

Then stopped.

Her eyes widened.

“What?”

She handed the letter to Marcus.

He read.

His face went pale.

Helena did not create the false heir.

I did.

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“Your mother.”

THE SECRET SHE HAD NEVER KNOWN

Khloe's hands shook.

“My mother created the false heir?”

Marcus nodded.

“But why?”

Khloe read the letter again.

The answer was beneath it.

To protect the real heir from Richard.

Khloe froze.

“The false heir wasn't Daniel.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She looked at the final paragraph.

The ink was partially burned.

Only a few words remained.

The name was never registered because…

The rest was gone.

Khloe stared at the damaged paper.

Marcus looked around.

“We need to leave.”

Khloe refused.

“There's more.”

The USB drive.

She inserted it into the old archive computer.

The screen flickered.

A single folder appeared.

PROJECT HEIR.

Marcus leaned closer.

Khloe opened it.

Inside were dozens of files.

Medical records.

DNA results.

Birth certificates.

Photographs.

Then one file:

CHILD TRANSFER — CONFIDENTIAL.

Khloe opened it.

Her face went pale.

The document contained her original birth information.

But there was another name.

A second child.

Born the same night.

TWO CHILDREN

Marcus stared at the screen.

“There were twins.”

Khloe couldn't speak.

Two children.

Same mother.

Same father.

Same date.

One registered.

One hidden.

Marcus whispered:

“Which one are you?”

Khloe stared.

Her whole life had been built around one identity.

What if it wasn't hers?

She opened the DNA file.

The results were incomplete.

One child had been identified as Khloe Parker.

The second had no name.

Only a code.

T-02.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Khloe shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then another file opened automatically.

A video.

A woman appeared on the screen.

Khloe's mother.

Alive.

Younger.

Holding two newborn babies.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, they found you.”

Khloe covered her mouth.

Her mother's voice continued.

“Khloe, if you're alive, you need to understand one thing.”

She looked down at the babies.

“You were never supposed to know about your sister.”

Khloe's heart stopped.

“My sister?”

Marcus stared at the screen.

The video continued.

“She was the child they wanted.”

“Not you.”

“Because she carries the original bloodline.”

Khloe's face went white.

Then her mother's voice became urgent.

“Protect her.”

The screen went black.

THE SECOND FIRE

Suddenly, flames exploded through the archive door.

Marcus grabbed Khloe.

“We're leaving.”

“But the USB—”

“I have it.”

He pulled her toward the exit.

The ceiling groaned.

A metal beam crashed behind them.

They ran.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Khloe could barely breathe.

Marcus held her close.

“Almost there.”

A fireball exploded from a nearby room.

They fell.

Khloe screamed.

Pain shot through her stomach.

Marcus immediately looked at her.

“Are you hurt?”

“I don't know.”

He helped her stand.

“Can you walk?”

“Yes.”

“Then keep moving.”

They reached the emergency staircase.

The door was locked.

Marcus kicked it.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

He looked around.

Then saw a fire axe.

He grabbed it.

One strike.

Two.

Three.

The door cracked.

He struck again.

The lock broke.

They escaped into the stairwell.

But someone was already there.

A man stood below them.

Holding a gun.

Marcus froze.

The man raised it.

“Give me the USB.”

Khloe stepped behind Marcus.

The man smiled.

“You have no idea what you've found.”

Marcus stared.

“Who are you?”

The man removed his mask.

Marcus's face went white.

“Dad?”

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Marcus's father stood beneath the emergency lights.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakable.

His gun remained pointed at Marcus.

“You should have stayed ignorant.”

Marcus stared.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because dead men have more freedom.”

Khloe stepped forward.

“You ordered the fire.”

His father looked at her.

“I ordered the destruction of the evidence.”

“You tried to kill us.”

“No.”

He looked at Khloe's stomach.

“I tried to kill the past.”

Marcus's voice became cold.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You used my marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You made me doubt Khloe.”

“Yes.”

Marcus's eyes filled with anger.

“Why?”

His father lowered the gun slightly.

“Because your marriage was the only thing standing between the Thorne family and its survival.”

Khloe stared.

“You wanted me dead.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

His father looked at her.

“I wanted you to believe you were the heir.”

Khloe froze.

“You're not.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

He smiled.

“Your sister.”

THE CHILD THEY HID

Marcus stared.

“What sister?”

His father looked at Khloe.

“Your mother had twins.”

“We know.”

“But you were not the important child.”

Khloe's breathing stopped.

“Where is she?”

He smiled.

“Closer than you think.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Where is she?”

His father looked toward the hospital.

“She's here.”

Khloe's eyes widened.

“Who?”

He smiled.

“You've already met her.”

Then the stairwell doors opened behind him.

Someone appeared.

A woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Pale.

Khloe recognized her instantly.

The woman from the archive.

Marcus's mother.

But this time, she wasn't alone.

A second woman stood beside her.

She looked almost exactly like Khloe.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Same birthmark near her left cheek.

Khloe couldn't breathe.

The woman looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Hello, sister.”

THE FIRE FALLS

The building shook.

The fire had reached the upper floors.

Alarms screamed.

Marcus stared at the two women.

His father lowered the gun.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

The second woman stepped forward.

“My name is Elena.”

Khloe whispered:

“Elena…”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't I know you?”

“Because Mother hid me.”

“Why?”

Elena looked at Marcus's father.

“Because he wanted me dead.”

Marcus stepped between them.

“Why?”

Elena answered:

“Because I am the legal heir.”

Silence.

The words seemed louder than the alarms.

Khloe stared.

“But the baby…”

Elena looked at her stomach.

“The baby isn't the heir.”

She touched Khloe's hand.

“The baby is the witness.”

Marcus frowned.

“The witness to what?”

Elena looked at him.

“To the fact that the Thorne family has been lying about its bloodline for thirty years.”

Another explosion shook the building.

Glass shattered.

Flames rose behind them.

Elena grabbed Khloe's arm.

“We have to go.”

Marcus looked at his father.

“You're coming with us.”

His father smiled.

“No.”

“Dad.”

“I have nowhere to go.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then face what you did.”

His father looked at him.

“I already did.”

He turned toward the flames.

“The fire wasn't meant to kill you.”

Marcus frowned.

“Then who?”

His father smiled sadly.

“Everyone who still remembers the truth.”

He stepped backward.

And disappeared into the smoke.

THE MORNING AFTER

By dawn, the hospital was half destroyed.

The archive was gone.

The records were ash.

The computers were melted.

The security system had been erased.

Every trace of the Thorne family's hidden history appeared to have disappeared.

But one thing survived.

The USB drive.

Marcus held it in his hand.

Khloe stood beside him.

Elena sat across from them.

Nathan finally returned.

His clothes were covered in soot.

“I found something.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

Nathan placed a burned piece of paper on the table.

It was barely readable.

But the words were clear.

THE HEIR SHALL NOT BE THE CHILD OF THE HEIR.

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Elena answered.

“It means the person who inherits the trust doesn't need to be the person born next.”

Khloe looked at her.

“Then who inherits?”

Elena smiled sadly.

“The person who was deliberately erased.”

Khloe's heart stopped.

“You?”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked at Marcus.

“And that is why your father spent thirty years trying to make me disappear.”

Marcus stared at the ruins outside.

The fire had destroyed the archive.

It had erased evidence.

It had burned photographs.

It had destroyed records.

But it had also revealed something nobody had expected.

There was another Thorne heir.

A sister Khloe had never known existed.

A woman who had been hidden since birth.

And now that woman was standing beside her.

The fire had failed.

But the people behind it had one final advantage.

They still had no idea that Khloe had recovered the USB.

And on that drive was the one file Helena had spent decades trying to destroy.

A file named:

THE ORIGINAL BETRAYAL.

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“Tonight, we find out who started all of this.”

Marcus nodded.

But Elena interrupted.

“No.”

Khloe turned.

Elena's expression was grim.

“You find out who finished it.”

Outside, the sun rose over the ruined hospital.

And somewhere across the city, Helena Vale watched the flames disappear from the skyline.

She smiled.

Because the fire had destroyed almost everything.

Almost.

But not the one thing she wanted.

The truth.

May you like

And now that Khloe had found her sister—

the final war for the Thorne fortune had begun.
