CHAPTER 8 — THE FALSE HEIR

CHAPTER 8 — THE FALSE HEIR

The envelope was already open when Marcus arrived.

That was the first thing he noticed.

The second was the blood.

A single dark drop stained the corner of the document lying on Adrian's desk.

Marcus stopped.

Nathan stepped behind him.

“Don't touch it.”

Marcus stared at the paper.

“What is that?”

Nathan looked at the heading.

His face went pale.

“The succession certificate.”

Marcus frowned.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because I have the original.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You don't understand.”

Nathan pointed toward the document.

“That is the original.”

Marcus stepped closer.

His eyes moved across the page.

The Thorne family crest.

The legal seal.

The signatures.

Everything looked authentic.

Then he saw the name.

ALEXANDER THORNE.

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Who is Alexander?”

Nathan didn't answer.

Marcus looked at him.

“Who is he?”

Nathan finally spoke.

“The heir your family was supposed to have.”

THE NAME THAT DISAPPEARED

Marcus stared at the certificate.

“That's my grandfather's name.”

“Yes.”

“Alexander was his son?”

Nathan nodded.

“Before your father.”

Marcus frowned.

“My grandfather had another son?”

“One.”

“Why have I never heard of him?”

“Because Alexander disappeared.”

“When?”

“Thirty-one years ago.”

Marcus looked at the document again.

“So this says Alexander had a child.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Nathan hesitated.

Then pointed to the name.

Daniel Alexander Thorne.

Marcus whispered:

“Daniel.”

Nathan nodded.

“Your grandfather's first grandson.”

Marcus looked confused.

“But I'm the oldest grandson.”

“No.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“You mean legally.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Exactly.”

THE HIDDEN HEIR

Nathan opened a second folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A young man stood beside Marcus's grandfather.

He looked almost exactly like Marcus.

Same dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same sharp jaw.

Marcus stared.

“That was Alexander?”

“Yes.”

“He looks like me.”

“He was your father's older brother.”

Marcus's breathing became shallow.

“Why was he erased?”

Nathan looked toward the door.

“Because he refused to give up the inheritance.”

Marcus stared.

“What happened?”

“Your grandfather wanted Alexander to take control of the empire.”

“And my father?”

“Your father wanted it.”

Marcus understood.

“Then Alexander disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And everyone believed him dead.”

“Yes.”

“But he wasn't.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Where is he now?”

Nathan's expression changed.

“He died six years ago.”

Marcus froze.

“How?”

“Cancer.”

“Did anyone know?”

“Your father.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Of course.”

Nathan placed another document on the desk.

“This is his death certificate.”

Marcus read it.

Then looked at the succession certificate.

“Then Daniel is his son.”

“Yes.”

“Where is Daniel?”

Nathan was silent.

Marcus immediately understood.

“Adrian knows.”

“Yes.”

THE PERFECT HEIR

Nathan opened another folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

School records.

Passport copies.

Bank statements.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Marcus scanned them.

Everything documented the life of Daniel Alexander Thorne.

Born in London.

Raised in Switzerland.

Educated at private schools.

Graduated from Oxford.

Married.

Divorced.

No children.

Marcus looked up.

“This is too complete.”

Nathan nodded.

“That's what bothered me.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel never existed.”

Marcus stared.

“What?”

Nathan pointed to the passport.

“The photograph is real.”

“The name?”

“Real.”

“The school?”

“Real.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

Marcus frowned.

“Then how can he not exist?”

Nathan lowered his voice.

“Because someone built him.”

THE MAN WHO WAS CREATED

The room became silent.

Marcus looked through the records again.

“Someone fabricated an entire person?”

“Not exactly.”

Nathan removed a photograph.

“This man existed.”

Marcus looked at it.

The face was different.

Older.

Rougher.

But the eyes—

the eyes were familiar.

“Who is he?”

Nathan answered:

“Daniel Ross.”

Marcus frowned.

“An accountant.”

“Yes.”

“Why would an accountant become the Thorne heir?”

“Because he was paid.”

Marcus looked at the succession documents.

“To impersonate Alexander's son.”

Nathan nodded.

“But why?”

“To challenge Khloe's claim.”

Marcus finally understood.

“If Daniel is recognized as Alexander's legitimate heir…”

“He becomes senior to you.”

“And Khloe?”

“Her claim gets challenged.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“And the trust?”

“Frozen.”

“For how long?”

“Possibly years.”

Marcus stared at the documents.

“And during that time?”

“Adrian controls the assets.”

THE FALSE DNA

Marcus opened the DNA report.

There it was.

A genetic match.

Daniel Ross supposedly matched Alexander Thorne.

Marcus stared.

“How did they fake this?”

Nathan shook his head.

“They didn't.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

“They used real DNA.”

“How?”

Nathan placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside was an old medical sample.

Alexander's.

Marcus stared.

“Your father kept it.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Marcus looked sick.

“He knew this would happen.”

Nathan nodded.

“Your father kept DNA samples from every important member of the family.”

Marcus stared.

“So Adrian could create a biological match.”

“Yes.”

“And no one would question it.”

“Exactly.”

Marcus looked at the fake heir's photograph.

“Daniel doesn't even know who he really is.”

Nathan shook his head.

“He does now.”

THE MEETING

The door opened.

Daniel Ross entered.

Marcus immediately recognized him from the photograph.

He looked frightened.

Not powerful.

Not arrogant.

Frightened.

Nathan stood.

“You came.”

Daniel nodded.

“I didn't have a choice.”

Marcus stared at him.

“Who recruited you?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Adrian.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“Why?”

“He offered me five million dollars.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“For pretending to be Alexander's son?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know it was illegal?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because my daughter needed surgery.”

Marcus's expression softened slightly.

“What happened?”

“Cancer.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“Adrian paid for everything.”

Marcus looked at Nathan.

Nathan's expression was grim.

“And what did he want in return?”

Daniel answered:

“My identity.”

THE CONTRACT

Daniel handed Marcus a contract.

“I signed it.”

Marcus read it.

The first pages were ordinary.

Payment terms.

Confidentiality.

Identity protection.

Then he reached page nineteen.

His hands stopped.

There was a clause.

Upon successful recognition of Daniel Alexander Thorne as lawful heir, all claims to the Evelyn Trust shall be transferred to Adrian Thorne.

Marcus looked up.

“You knew.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't understand it.”

“You signed it.”

“I was desperate.”

Marcus closed the document.

“You were going to steal Khloe's inheritance.”

Daniel's eyes filled with shame.

“I know.”

“And the baby?”

Daniel looked away.

“I was told the child wouldn't matter.”

Marcus stood.

“Who told you that?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Isabella.”

Marcus's expression changed.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Everything.”

THE SECOND FALSEHOOD

Marcus thought of Isabella.

Her tears.

Her confession.

Her claim that she had been forced into the plan.

Now he wondered how much of that was true.

“Did she tell you Khloe was dangerous?”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell you the baby wasn't really mine?”

“Yes.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“What else?”

Daniel looked at him.

“She said Khloe had already agreed to disappear.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

“She told me Khloe knew she would lose the trust.”

“That never happened.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you believe her?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because she showed me a signed agreement.”

Marcus's heart stopped.

“A signed agreement?”

“Yes.”

“Whose signature?”

Daniel reached into his coat.

He handed Marcus a photocopy.

Marcus looked at it.

The signature belonged to Khloe.

But Marcus knew immediately.

It was fake.

He had seen her handwriting thousands of times.

“This isn't hers.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know that now.”

Marcus turned to Nathan.

“This is the document Isabella used.”

Nathan examined it.

His face changed.

“Marcus…”

“What?”

Nathan pointed to the bottom.

There was a witness signature.

Marcus recognized it.

His father's attorney.

The same attorney who had handled the original Thorne Trust.

The same man who had died eight years earlier.

Marcus stared.

“He's dead.”

Nathan nodded.

“Which means this document was prepared before his death.”

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Then this plan has been running for years.”

THE TRUE TARGET

Nathan opened another file.

“This is what Adrian really wants.”

Inside was a map.

Not of the Thorne estate.

Not of the hotels.

But of the trust.

Every asset.

Every company.

Every account.

Every voting share.

Marcus stared.

“This isn't an inheritance plan.”

“No.”

“This is a corporate takeover.”

Nathan nodded.

“Khloe isn't just an heir.”

“She is the controlling shareholder.”

“Yes.”

“And the baby?”

“The next controlling shareholder.”

Marcus looked at the documents.

“So if Khloe dies…”

“Adrian becomes guardian.”

“And if the baby is declared illegitimate…”

“The trust can be challenged.”

“And if Daniel is recognized as the heir…”

“Khloe loses the controlling interest.”

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“And Isabella's role?”

Nathan looked at him.

“She was supposed to make sure all three things happened.”

THE RECORDING

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“There is something else.”

Marcus looked at him.

“What?”

“I recorded Adrian.”

Nathan immediately stepped forward.

“You did?”

Daniel nodded.

“He didn't trust me.”

“Where is it?”

“I have it.”

Daniel removed his phone.

He played the recording.

Adrian's voice filled the room.

Cold.

Calm.

Certain.

“The girl must lose the trust.”

A second voice.

Isabella.

“And Marcus?”

Adrian laughed.

“Marcus will do exactly what I need.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“If Khloe survives the hospital attack?”

Isabella asked.

Adrian answered:

“Then we move to the child.”

Marcus's eyes opened.

His face became white.

Nathan stared at the phone.

The recording continued.

“The baby is the only thing that matters.”

Marcus whispered:

“Why?”

Adrian's voice answered.

“Because the baby is the one person who can prove the Thorne bloodline is still alive.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

THE CHILD

Marcus looked at Nathan.

“Why would Adrian care about proving the bloodline?”

Nathan's expression became grim.

“Because he knows what happens when the bloodline is proven.”

“What?”

“The trust becomes untouchable.”

Marcus stared.

“Then why attack Khloe?”

“To force the trust into litigation.”

“And the false heir?”

“To create confusion.”

“And the baby?”

“To establish a competing claim.”

Marcus shook his head.

“He doesn't need to own the fortune.”

Nathan nodded.

“He only needs to control the legal process.”

Marcus looked at the documents.

“And by the time the courts figure it out…”

Nathan finished:

“The money is gone.”

KHOLE'S DISCOVERY

At the hospital, Khloe sat alone.

She had the old photograph in her hand.

Her mother's face.

Marcus's mother.

The newborn baby.

She turned the photograph over again.

This time, she noticed something she had missed.

A small handwritten number.

Room 417.

Khloe frowned.

She called Nathan.

No answer.

She called Marcus.

No answer.

Then she remembered something.

The hospital's fourth floor had no Room 417.

She had asked about it years ago.

The receptionist told her the hospital skipped those numbers.

But now—

she understood.

Room 417 had never been a patient room.

It was an archive.

A place where old medical records were stored.

Khloe stood.

She pulled on her coat.

She needed answers.

THE ARCHIVE

Room 417 was behind a locked door.

Khloe found the key in the old envelope.

Inside were hundreds of files.

She searched.

Parker.

Parker.

Parker.

Then—

KHLOE PARKER — CONFIDENTIAL.

Her hands trembled.

She opened it.

The first page was her original birth record.

The second was a photograph.

The third—

was a DNA report.

Khloe read the result.

Her face went pale.

She wasn't surprised by the identity of her mother.

She was surprised by the final line.

Biological father: Marcus Thorne.

Khloe sat down.

The baby was Marcus's.

She had never doubted that.

But beneath the result was another document.

A legal statement.

Signed eighteen years earlier.

By Marcus's father.

The statement declared:

If Khloe Parker is ever identified as Evelyn Thorne's descendant, her claim must be contested by a male heir carrying the Thorne bloodline.

Khloe stared.

The false heir.

They had planned him before she was even old enough to understand what inheritance meant.

Her entire life had been a chess game.

And she had never known she was the queen.

THE NAME ON THE LAST PAGE

Khloe turned the final page.

There was one name.

Not Adrian.

Not Isabella.

Not Marcus's father.

Someone else.

A woman.

Evelyn Thorne.

But beside her name was a handwritten note:

She ordered the succession change herself.

Khloe froze.

“What?”

The door behind her closed.

A voice spoke from the darkness.

“You weren't supposed to find that.”

Khloe turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Older.

Elegant.

Pale.

Khloe recognized her immediately.

The face from the photograph.

The woman who had supposedly died years ago.

Marcus's mother.

Khloe whispered:

“You're alive.”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Khloe stood.

“Why did you let them do this?”

The woman looked at the documents.

“Because the false heir wasn't created to steal your fortune.”

Khloe stared.

“Then why?”

Her mother-in-law's eyes filled with tears.

“To save it.”

Khloe's expression hardened.

“Save it from whom?”

The woman answered:

“From you.”

Khloe froze.

Before she could ask what that meant, the woman stepped closer and whispered:

“Because you were never the first heir.”

She pointed to Khloe's stomach.

“The child is.”

Khloe instinctively covered her belly.

The woman continued:

“And Adrian has known that from the beginning.”

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot echoed somewhere beyond the archive door.

And when the emergency lights came on—

Marcus's mother was gone.

So was the original succession document.

Only one sentence remained written on the wall:

THE FALSE HEIR WAS NEVER DANIEL.

Khloe stared at it.

Her heart pounded.

If Daniel wasn't the false heir—

then someone else had been secretly placed inside the Thorne bloodline.

Someone much closer.

May you like

Someone she trusted.

And somewhere outside the hospital, Marcus was about to discover exactly who that person was.
