CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 14 — THE LAST BETRAYAL

Marcus knew something was wrong the moment the police lights appeared outside the building.

There were six cars.

Then eight.

Then more.

Blue and red lights painted the windows of the conference room.

Khloe stood completely still.

Isabella was still sitting across from her.

Neither woman spoke.

Marcus looked through the glass.

“They're here for me.”

Khloe turned.

“Why?”

A police officer entered the hallway.

Behind him were two investigators.

One carried a sealed evidence bag.

The other held a folder.

The officer stopped in front of Marcus.

“Marcus Thorne?”

“Yes.”

“You're under investigation for financial fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and attempted manipulation of a legal trust.”

Khloe's face went pale.

Marcus didn't move.

“On what evidence?”

The investigator opened the folder.

“Your signature.”

Marcus stared.

“On which document?”

“All of them.”

Khloe looked at him.

“What did you sign?”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“I don't know.”

The investigator placed the first document on the table.

Marcus recognized it.

The second.

He recognized that too.

The third.

His signature.

Then the fourth.

His signature again.

Khloe stared at the stack.

“How many?”

The investigator answered:

“Twenty-seven.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Twenty-seven documents.

Twenty-seven signatures.

Twenty-seven doors he had unknowingly opened.

And every single one led back to Khloe.

THE PRICE OF SECRETS

The investigators took Marcus away.

He didn't resist.

Before leaving, he looked at Khloe.

She stood several feet away.

He expected anger.

He deserved it.

He expected hatred.

He could understand it.

But what he saw in her eyes was worse.

Disappointment.

“Khloe.”

She didn't answer.

“I never wanted this.”

She looked at him.

“You never wanted to know.”

Marcus froze.

“You didn't want to know what your father was doing.”

She stepped closer.

“You didn't want to know what Isabella was doing.”

“You didn't want to know what the contracts said.”

“You didn't want to know what you signed.”

Marcus lowered his head.

“And every time you chose not to know…”

Her voice broke.

“…someone else paid the price.”

He whispered:

“I know.”

“No.”

Khloe shook her head.

“You don't.”

She looked at the handcuffs.

“Not yet.”

THE CELL

Marcus spent the night in a holding cell.

For the first time in his life, no one could protect him.

Not his father's lawyers.

Not his family name.

Not his money.

Not his connections.

Not even Khloe.

He sat alone.

Hours passed.

Then a lawyer arrived.

Marcus looked up.

“Who sent you?”

“Your father.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“My father is supposed to be dead.”

The lawyer didn't smile.

“He isn't.”

“Then tell him to come here himself.”

“He can't.”

“Why?”

“He's being hunted.”

“By whom?”

The lawyer hesitated.

“Everyone.”

Marcus leaned back.

“What do you want?”

The lawyer placed a document on the table.

“Sign this.”

Marcus looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Your confession.”

Marcus stared.

“My confession?”

“You accept responsibility for the financial crimes.”

“And then?”

“Khloe is protected.”

Marcus looked up.

“What does that mean?”

“The trust passes to her.”

“And my child?”

“Protected.”

Marcus stared at the document.

“Who benefits?”

The lawyer smiled.

“You.”

Marcus laughed.

“No.”

The lawyer frowned.

“No?”

“You don't come here at two in the morning offering me a confession because you care about me.”

The lawyer stood.

“Think carefully.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Tell my father something.”

“What?”

“If he wants me to confess…”

He leaned forward.

“…he can come tell me himself.”

THE VISITOR

The door opened.

Marcus expected another lawyer.

Instead, he saw Nathan.

Alive.

Bruised.

A bandage wrapped around his shoulder.

Marcus stood immediately.

“Nathan.”

Nathan sat across from him.

“You look terrible.”

Marcus almost laughed.

“So do you.”

Nathan smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

“Khloe knows.”

Marcus looked away.

“She knows everything?”

“Not everything.”

“What haven't you told her?”

Nathan leaned forward.

“That you signed the first agreement willingly.”

Marcus stared.

“I didn't understand it.”

“You signed it anyway.”

“I was protecting her.”

“No.”

Nathan's voice was hard.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Marcus didn't answer.

Nathan continued.

“That's the part you don't want to admit.”

Marcus clenched his fists.

“I loved her.”

“I know.”

“I still do.”

“I know.”

“I thought if I stayed silent, I could keep her safe.”

Nathan looked at him.

“And did it work?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“No.”

THE RECORDING

Nathan placed a small recorder on the table.

“What is that?”

“Your last chance.”

Marcus stared.

Nathan pressed play.

Marcus heard his own voice.

Three years earlier.

He was in his father's office.

Young.

Confident.

Naive.

His father was speaking.

“You'll sign the documents.”

Marcus's younger voice answered:

“And Khloe?”

“She'll never know.”

“What if she finds out?”

“She won't.”

“And if she does?”

A pause.

Then his father's voice:

“Then make her believe you're protecting her.”

Marcus's face went pale.

He had forgotten the conversation.

Or perhaps he had buried it.

Nathan stopped the recording.

“You knew.”

Marcus stared at the recorder.

“I remembered pieces.”

“You remembered enough.”

Marcus whispered:

“Why didn't I stop him?”

Nathan answered:

“Because you loved your father.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You loved the idea that your father was a good man.”

That sentence destroyed something inside Marcus.

Because it was true.

KHOLE'S DECISION

The next morning, Khloe sat alone.

Elena entered.

“You haven't slept.”

Khloe looked through the window.

“No.”

“Are you going to save him?”

Khloe didn't answer.

Elena sat beside her.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

“He lied to you.”

“I know.”

“He signed documents that endangered you.”

“I know.”

“He trusted his father more than he trusted you.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“Then why are you thinking about saving him?”

Khloe looked down.

“Because he's still the father of my child.”

Elena sighed.

“That isn't enough.”

“I know.”

“Do you still love him?”

Khloe was silent.

That silence was her answer.

Elena took her hand.

“Love doesn't erase betrayal.”

“No.”

“But betrayal doesn't always erase love.”

Khloe looked at her.

“I don't know if I can forgive him.”

“You don't have to.”

“What if I save him and he hurts me again?”

“Then don't save him for yourself.”

Khloe frowned.

“Then why?”

Elena looked toward her stomach.

“Save him because your child deserves to know whether his father became a coward…”

She paused.

“…or a man.”

THE OFFER

That afternoon, Khloe entered the interrogation room.

Marcus looked exhausted.

He stood immediately.

“Khloe.”

She sat down.

Neither spoke.

Finally, she placed a folder on the table.

Marcus stared.

“What is this?”

“Everything I have.”

He opened it.

Inside were copies of the financial records.

The recordings.

The forged contracts.

The evidence against his father.

The evidence against Richard.

The evidence against Helena.

And finally—

the documents bearing Marcus's signatures.

Marcus looked at her.

“You're giving these to the investigators.”

“Yes.”

His face fell.

“Then I'm finished.”

“Maybe.”

“Khloe…”

“I didn't say I was going to save you.”

He looked at her.

“Then why are you here?”

She leaned forward.

“Because I'm giving you one choice.”

“What choice?”

“Tell the truth.”

Marcus stared.

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Helena?”

“Yes.”

“Isabella?”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

Khloe's voice became quiet.

“Especially you.”

Marcus swallowed.

“What happens if I do?”

“You lose everything.”

He laughed softly.

“I already have.”

“No.”

Khloe shook her head.

“You still have a choice.”

Marcus looked at her.

“And if I refuse?”

Khloe stood.

“Then I walk away.”

He stared at her.

“For good?”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked down.

For years, he had been protecting his family name.

Protecting the company.

Protecting the fortune.

Protecting his father.

Protecting himself.

Now the only thing left was the woman he loved.

And she was finally walking away.

THE LAST BETRAYAL

Marcus looked at the documents.

Then at Khloe.

“I'll testify.”

Khloe didn't move.

“I'll tell them everything.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“My father's crimes.”

“Your crimes.”

Marcus nodded.

“Mine too.”

Khloe's eyes filled with tears.

“And the contracts?”

“I'll admit I signed them.”

“And the DNA report?”

“I'll admit I believed it.”

“And Isabella?”

“I'll testify against her.”

“And Helena?”

“I'll help them find her.”

“And Richard?”

“Yes.”

Khloe stared at him.

“Why?”

Marcus's voice broke.

“Because you were right.”

She waited.

“I didn't lose you because they were powerful.”

“I lost you because I kept choosing silence.”

A tear rolled down his cheek.

“And I'm done being silent.”

THE COURTROOM

Three weeks later, Marcus stood before the court.

The room was packed.

Reporters filled every seat.

Investors.

Lawyers.

Family members.

Former employees.

Even Isabella was there.

She sat behind her attorney.

For once, she wasn't smiling.

Marcus took the stand.

The prosecutor asked:

“Did you knowingly participate in the transfer of the Thorne family trust?”

Marcus looked toward Khloe.

She sat in the gallery.

Their eyes met.

Then he answered:

“Yes.”

A murmur swept through the courtroom.

“Did you sign the agreements?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know they could harm your wife?”

“No.”

“But you failed to investigate.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus looked down.

“Because I trusted the wrong people.”

The prosecutor paused.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Is he alive?”

Marcus looked at the courtroom.

“Yes.”

Gasps.

“And Richard Thorne?”

“Yes.”

“Helena Vale?”

“Yes.”

“Did Isabella Rossi act alone?”

“No.”

“Who controlled her?”

Marcus looked toward Isabella.

Then answered:

“Richard.”

“And who controlled Richard?”

Marcus paused.

“I don't know.”

The prosecutor frowned.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“But I know who knows.”

ISABELLA SPEAKS

Isabella stood.

“I do.”

The courtroom turned.

Her lawyer tried to stop her.

She ignored him.

“I know who controls Richard.”

The judge allowed her to speak.

Isabella looked at Khloe.

“Your grandfather.”

Silence.

Khloe's heart stopped.

“The man everyone believed died thirty years ago.”

The courtroom erupted.

The judge demanded order.

Isabella continued.

“He created the original plan.”

“He created the false heirs.”

“He manipulated Helena.”

“He used Richard.”

“He used me.”

“He used Marcus.”

“And he planned the fire.”

Khloe stared.

“Why?”

Isabella's voice broke.

“Because he wanted one thing.”

“What?”

“The child.”

Everyone looked at Khloe.

Isabella whispered:

“Your child carries the only bloodline capable of restoring the original trust.”

Marcus stood.

“What does that mean?”

Isabella looked at him.

“It means your child is not merely the heir.”

She paused.

“He is the proof.”

THE FINAL CHOICE

After the hearing, Khloe stood outside the courthouse.

Marcus approached.

He had been released pending trial.

He stopped several feet away.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

Khloe looked at him.

“Good.”

“I don't expect you to come back.”

“Good.”

“I just wanted to say…”

He hesitated.

“I am sorry.”

Khloe looked at him for a long moment.

Then placed one hand over her stomach.

“I believe you.”

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“But that doesn't mean we're okay.”

“I know.”

“You have to earn that.”

“I will.”

“Maybe I won't forgive you.”

“I understand.”

“Maybe I won't stay.”

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.”

Khloe took a breath.

“But I'm not going to let you destroy yourself to punish yourself.”

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I'll help you tell the truth.”

He stared.

“Why?”

“Because our child deserves a father who faces what he did.”

She stepped closer.

“But whether that father gets to be my husband again…”

She shook her head.

“That is something you haven't earned.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

Khloe walked away.

Marcus watched her go.

For the first time, he didn't chase her.

He didn't manipulate her.

He didn't ask her to stay.

He simply let her choose.

And that was the first honest thing he had done in years.

THE LAST MESSAGE

That night, Khloe received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

YOU SAVED MARCUS.

Another message followed.

NOW SAVE YOUR CHILD.

Khloe froze.

A third message appeared.

A photograph.

Her unborn child's medical file.

Someone had accessed it.

Again.

The final message arrived.

THE COURT WILL NEVER PROTECT YOU.

Then:

BUT I CAN.

Khloe stared at the screen.

Elena entered the room.

“What happened?”

Khloe handed her the phone.

Elena read the messages.

Her face changed.

“Who is it?”

Khloe shook her head.

“I don't know.”

The phone vibrated again.

This time, there was no text.

Only a photograph.

A man standing beside a burning building.

His face was visible.

Old.

Gray-haired.

Smiling.

Khloe recognized him immediately.

The face from her mother's old photograph.

Her grandfather.

The man who was supposed to have died thirty years ago.

And beneath the photograph were six words:

COME FIND ME, LITTLE THORNE.

Khloe stared at the image.

Her fear slowly turned into determination.

Marcus had paid the price for his secrets.

Isabella had fallen.

The empire was collapsing.

But the real enemy had finally stepped out of the shadows.

And Khloe understood one terrifying truth.

The fight had never been about saving the Thorne fortune.

It had always been about who would control the future of her child.

May you like

And this time—

she would not let anyone choose for her.
