Chapter 1 – The Closet Behind the Dresses

Chapter 1 – The Closet Behind the Dresses
The Westwood mansion had never felt so quiet.
Not even during funerals.
Not even on the night Adrian Westwood brought Claire’s belongings home in a sealed box.
The mansion had always been filled with sound.
Business conversations.
Charity events.
Laughter from people who came because the Westwood name opened doors.
But now, as Adrian climbed the staircase toward the room he had refused to enter for three years, the silence felt alive.
Like the house itself was waiting.
Waiting for the truth.
Behind him walked Rachel Bennett.
The housekeeper.
The woman who had spent five years cleaning rooms nobody noticed.
The woman who had learned the habits of one of Chicago’s most powerful families.
And beside her walked Emma.
A four-year-old girl holding a stuffed rabbit with one missing ear.
A child who had stopped an engagement party filled with billionaires, politicians, and celebrities.
A child who had said four words that changed everything.
Check your closet, sir.
Adrian stopped halfway up the stairs.
He looked down.
Three hundred guests were still gathered below.
The music had stopped.
The champagne had stopped flowing.
Everyone was pretending not to stare.
But everyone was watching.
Because everyone understood something terrible had happened.
A dead woman’s name had been spoken.
And nobody wanted to know why.
“Adrian.”
Madison’s voice came from behind him.
Soft.
Careful.
The voice she used when she wanted him to calm down.
For three years, that voice had worked.
When Adrian questioned Claire’s accident.
When he woke up from nightmares.
When he stared too long at old photographs.
Madison always knew what to say.
“You need to let go.”
“You deserve happiness.”
“Claire would want you to move forward.”
But tonight…
For the first time…
Her words sounded rehearsed.
Adrian turned.
Madison stood several steps away.
Her midnight-blue dress shimmered beneath the chandelier.
The same color Emma had described.
The blue lady.
A ridiculous phrase.
A child’s phrase.
Except Madison had gone pale when she heard it.
“Why are you following me?” Adrian asked.
Madison forced a small smile.
“Because you’re upset.”
“No.”
His voice was colder.
“I’m suspicious.”
The smile disappeared.
“Adrian, please.”
She lowered her voice.
“You cannot let a child destroy everything.”
Rachel immediately looked uncomfortable.
Emma squeezed her mother’s hand.
But Adrian noticed something.
Madison did not say:
“Do not believe her.”
She said:
“Do not let her destroy everything.”
A strange choice of words.
Natalie appeared beside Adrian.
Claire’s younger sister.
The only person who had never accepted the official story.
She looked at Madison.
“You knew about the closet.”
It was not a question.
Madison’s face tightened.
“I knew Claire had strange habits.”
Natalie laughed bitterly.
“She trusted you.”
Silence.
That sentence hurt Adrian.
Because Claire had trusted Madison.
They had been best friends before Adrian ever met her.
Madison had been the woman Claire called when she needed advice.
The woman who cried at Claire’s funeral.
The woman who helped Adrian survive the months afterward.
The woman everyone believed was the perfect replacement.
But maybe that was the problem.
Maybe she was too perfect.
They reached the third floor.
Claire’s bedroom waited.
The door was closed.
Adrian stared at it.
His hand hovered near the handle.
Three years.
Three years of avoiding this moment.
“Adrian.”
Madison spoke again.
“Whatever you find in there…”
She stopped.
Too late.
Everyone noticed.
Adrian slowly turned.
“Whatever I find?”
Madison froze.
“I mean…”
“You already know there is something.”
“No.”
“You just told me.”
For the first time, Madison looked trapped.
Adrian opened the door.
The smell hit him first.
Lavender.
Claire’s favorite scent.
His chest tightened.
For one second, he was back in the past.
Claire standing by the mirror.
Laughing because he had accidentally bought the wrong flowers.
Claire teasing him because he thought expensive gifts solved everything.
Claire saying:
“Adrian, sometimes I just want you.”
Not his money.
Not his company.
Him.
Then the memory disappeared.
Because Claire was gone.
The room remained exactly as he left it.
Her books.
Her paintings.
Her dresses.
Her life frozen in time.
Emma walked slowly inside.
Rachel followed nervously.
“Emma, stay close.”
The little girl nodded.
She looked around.
Then pointed.
“There.”
Everyone followed her finger.
The closet.
Adrian walked toward it.
His heartbeat became louder.
He opened the doors.
Claire’s dresses hung neatly.
Red.
Black.
White.
Blue.
All untouched.
Madison whispered:
“Adrian, please.”
He ignored her.
He moved Claire’s gowns aside.
And there it was.
The cedar panel.
Natalie covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Adrian touched the wood.
He remembered building it.
Claire had laughed.
“You know rich people hide things in secret rooms.”
He smiled.
“What would we hide?”
She shrugged.
“Maybe something important.”
He never imagined her words would become a warning.
The panel opened.
Inside were Claire’s belongings.
Her passport.
Letters.
A small jewelry box.
And a red Cartier case.
Adrian stopped.
Nobody spoke.
He reached for it.
His hands shook.
Because he knew.
He knew before opening it.
The box opened.
Inside was Claire’s wedding ring.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Pain moved through him.
Not fresh pain.
Old pain.
The kind that never disappeared.
“They said it was gone.”
His voice cracked.
“They said they searched the entire crash site.”
Nobody answered.
Then Natalie noticed something.
“Adrian.”
He looked.
Under the ring was a small envelope.
His name was written on it.
Claire’s handwriting.
For Adrian.
Madison took one step backward.
Nobody missed it.
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
Adrian,
If you found this, then I was right to be afraid.
His breathing stopped.
Do not trust Madison Cole.
The room became silent.
Madison immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“No, Adrian. You cannot believe this.”
He looked at her.
Not with anger.
Something worse.
Doubt.
“Why?”
Madison’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Claire was sick. She was paranoid.”
Natalie snapped:
“Do not talk about my sister like that.”
Adrian looked back at the letter.
There was more.
She knows about the accident.
She knows why I was afraid.
And she knows what happened the night I died.
The paper slipped slightly in Adrian’s hand.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Adrian answered.
“Hello?”
A distorted voice responded.
“You found her letter.”
Adrian’s blood went cold.
“Who is this?”
The voice laughed softly.
“You should have listened to your wife.”
The call ended.
Rachel immediately checked the hallway.
Nobody.
No one.
Then Adrian noticed something.
The bedroom window.
It was open.
Impossible.
The room had been locked.
Natalie whispered:
“Someone was here.”
Adrian turned toward Madison.
She was no longer crying.
She was texting.
Again.
Desperately.
“Who are you contacting?”
Madison looked up.
For a second…
The mask slipped.
Nobody saw the fear on her face except Adrian.
Because Madison Cole was not afraid of being accused.
She was afraid of something else.
Someone else.
And before Adrian could ask another question…
Emma spoke.
Quietly.
Almost like she was afraid.
“Sir…”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
The little girl pointed toward the hidden compartment.
“There is another thing.”
Everyone looked.
“What thing?”
Emma hugged her rabbit.
“The woman in blue took something out.”
Adrian felt his stomach drop.
“When?”
Emma whispered:
“Last night.”
Silence.
Last night.
Madison had been inside Claire’s room.
While Adrian was downstairs preparing to propose.
And then Emma said the words that changed the entire investigation:
“She was crying.”
A pause.
“Because she couldn’t find the other one.”
Adrian stared at Madison.
“The other one?”
Emma nodded.
“The other box.”
For three years, everyone believed Claire’s secrets died with her.
They were wrong.
Because Claire had hidden something.
Something Madison wanted badly enough to risk everything.
