Chapter 9 – The Man Claire Feared

Chapter 9 – The Man Claire Feared
The photograph sat on the table.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes the truth was not terrifying because it was unknown.
It was terrifying because it was familiar.
Adrian stared at the watch.
The expensive silver watch.
The black leather strap.
The small scratch near the edge of the face.
He knew that watch.
He had seen it every morning as a child.
He had watched his father wear it at business meetings.
At family dinners.
At Christmas celebrations.
His father.
Richard Westwood.
A man who had been dead for ten years.
Impossible.
“That’s not possible.”
Adrian’s voice was barely audible.
Rachel looked at the photograph.
“We need to verify it.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“I know that watch.”
Madison remained silent.
Too silent.
Adrian turned toward her.
“You knew?”
Her eyes moved away.
That was enough.
“How long?”
Madison swallowed.
“I knew your father was involved.”
“Involved in what?”
“Everything.”
The answer felt like a punch.
The Father’s Shadow
Adrian had spent his entire life trying to become like Richard Westwood.
Strong.
Successful.
Respected.
A man who could enter any room and command attention.
As a child, Adrian thought his father was a hero.
But Claire had discovered something he never knew.
Heroes could leave behind victims.
Rachel opened the old files.
“Your father’s name appears in every sealed investigation connected to Westwood Holdings.”
Adrian looked at her.
“How many?”
“Five.”
The room went silent.
“Five investigations?”
“Yes.”
“And all disappeared?”
Rachel nodded.
“Closed. Settled. Buried.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
His entire identity was built around a man who might have been a criminal.
Claire’s Last Discovery
Madison finally spoke.
“Claire found your father’s private records.”
Adrian turned.
“What records?”
“His personal journals.”
“Where?”
Madison hesitated.
“Your mother has them.”
Of course.
Margaret.
Always Margaret.
Adrian grabbed his coat.
“Where are you going?”
Rachel asked.
“To ask my mother why she protected a dead man’s secrets.”
The Conversation With Margaret
Margaret Westwood was waiting.
Adrian knew immediately.
She was not surprised.
That hurt more than anger.
“You found the photograph.”
Not a question.
Adrian stopped.
“How?”
Margaret looked tired.
“Because I knew eventually you would.”
He stared.
“You knew Claire had evidence.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was investigating.”
“Yes.”
“You knew someone wanted her silent.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The room became unbearable.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“Why?”
For the first time in his life, he saw his mother as something other than powerful.
He saw a woman who had been carrying fear for years.
“Because I was protecting you.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You were protecting the family name.”
Margaret looked away.
“Both.”
The Truth About Richard Westwood
Margaret finally told him everything.
Richard Westwood had not built the empire alone.
He had built it through manipulation.
Through illegal deals.
Through people who feared him.
But there was one thing Margaret never expected.
Richard kept records.
Every transaction.
Every secret.
Every person he controlled.
A black ledger.
The most dangerous object in the Westwood family.
“Where is it?”
Adrian asked.
Margaret looked at him.
“Claire found it.”
The room froze.
“She had it?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she show me?”
Margaret whispered:
“Because she discovered something worse.”
Adrian felt cold.
“What?”
Margaret looked directly at him.
“Your father didn’t act alone.”
The Person Behind Richard
Adrian waited.
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“He had someone inside the family.”
“Who?”
She looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Mom.”
“I swear.”
Then she added:
“But Claire suspected.”
“Who?”
Margaret whispered:
“Someone who had access to everything.”
A person who knew the company.
The accounts.
The house.
The family.
Someone close.
The Final Recording
That night, Adrian returned to Claire’s files.
The flash drive contained one more video.
A hidden file.
Created hours before her death.
He opened it.
Claire appeared.
But this time…
She was crying.
“Adrian.”
His heart broke.
“If you are seeing this, I failed.”
She looked behind her.
Terrified.
“I found the ledger.”
Adrian leaned forward.
“I know who has been continuing your father’s work.”
A pause.
“But I don’t know if I can escape.”
Her breathing became uneven.
Then she whispered:
“The person helping him…”
The video glitched.
Adrian hit the screen.
“No.”
The image returned.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“The person helping him is…”
Static.
The file corrupted.
Only one final frame remained.
A reflection in the mirror behind Claire.
A person standing in the doorway.
Adrian froze.
Because he recognized the silhouette.
Not from the past.
From the present.
The person in the reflection was wearing a familiar ring.
The Westwood family ring.
The same ring Margaret wore.
The same ring Caleb wore.
The same ring Adrian inherited.
The Call
At 3:17 a.m., Adrian received another unknown call.
He answered.
A voice whispered:
“Stop searching for the ledger.”
Adrian said nothing.
The voice continued.
“Your wife made the same mistake.”
His blood turned cold.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“The person who tried to save her.”
The call ended.
Seconds later, a message arrived.
A location.
And one sentence.
“Come alone if you want to know who Claire feared.”
Adrian stared at the address.
An abandoned warehouse outside Chicago.
Rachel immediately objected.
“You’re not going.”
Adrian looked at Claire’s photograph.
“She died because nobody listened to her.”
He grabbed his coat.
“I won’t make that mistake.”
But when Adrian arrived at the warehouse…
He discovered something impossible.
The person waiting for him was not Caleb.
Not Margaret.
Not Madison.
It was someone who should have been dead.
Someone who knew every secret Claire uncovered.
Someone who had been missing for twelve years.
The woman from the video.
Evelyn Hart.
She looked at Adrian.
And said:
“Your wife died trying to expose the man who killed my family.”
A pause.
“And that man is still alive.”
Adrian stared.
“Who?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.
Then she whispered:
“Your father.”
