Chapter 10 – The Truth About the Accident

Chapter 10 – The Truth About the Accident

The abandoned warehouse smelled like dust, rain, and old memories.

Adrian stood frozen.

Across from him was a woman the world believed had disappeared twelve years ago.

A woman whose name had been erased from every record connected to Westwood Holdings.

A woman who had just spoken the one sentence Adrian never thought he would hear.

“Your father killed my family.”

For years, Adrian believed his father’s legacy was complicated.

Maybe flawed.

Maybe ruthless.

But still something worth protecting.

Now he was standing in front of proof that the man he admired had destroyed innocent lives.

And Claire had known.

Evelyn Hart’s Story

Evelyn sat at an old wooden table.

Her hands trembled as she opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank records.

Evidence collected over twelve years.

“Your father was not afraid of losing money.”

Evelyn said quietly.

“He was afraid of losing control.”

Adrian stared at the papers.

“My father was dead before Claire died.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Was he?”

The question struck him.

“What are you saying?”

She pushed a document across the table.

A transaction record.

A private account.

A signature.

Richard Westwood.

Date:

Two years after his reported death.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“That is exactly what your family wanted everyone to believe.”

The Man Who Never Left

Evelyn explained.

Richard Westwood officially died from a heart attack.

A private funeral.

A closed casket.

No public investigation.

The perfect death.

But Evelyn discovered something strange.

The company continued receiving instructions after his death.

Orders.

Financial decisions.

Private transfers.

Someone was still controlling Westwood Holdings.

And that someone had access to Richard’s accounts.

“Who?”

Adrian asked.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Someone who learned everything from him.”

Adrian already knew the answer.

Caleb.

But Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

She pushed another file forward.

“Your brother is guilty.”

A pause.

“But he is not the mastermind.”

The Real Accident

Adrian looked at her.

“What does this have to do with Claire?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Pain.

“Claire found the ledger.”

“The black ledger?”

“Yes.”

“The one my father kept?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She found names.”

“Whose names?”

“Everyone involved.”

Adrian felt cold.

“Madison.”

Evelyn looked away.

“Not at first.”

That surprised him.

“Explain.”

“Madison was investigating too.”

Adrian remembered the messages.

The fear.

The warning.

“She was trying to help Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Claire distrust her?”

“Because Madison made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“She told the wrong person.”

The Night Claire Died

Evelyn opened another file.

Inside were security images.

A gas station camera.

A highway camera.

A hotel entrance.

Pictures from the night Claire died.

Adrian stared.

The official timeline was wrong.

Claire had not been driving home.

She had been meeting someone.

“Who?”

Evelyn answered:

“Your brother.”

Adrian felt sick.

“Caleb?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire believed he was ready to confess.”

The words hit him.

Caleb.

The brother who cried at Claire’s funeral.

The brother who told Adrian to move on.

He had been the last person Claire trusted.

The Confrontation

Evelyn played an audio recording.

Claire’s voice.

“Caleb, please understand. This is not about destroying the family.”

A male voice answered.

Caleb.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Claire:

“People are being hurt.”

Caleb:

“You think exposing everything will save people?”

A pause.

“It will destroy us.”

Claire:

“Then maybe we deserve to fall.”

Silence.

Then Caleb spoke.

“You don’t understand what Dad built.”

Claire answered:

“I understand exactly.”

The recording ended.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then came the final piece.

A second recording.

After Claire’s crash.

Caleb’s voice.

“He knows nothing.”

Another voice answered.

A woman.

Margaret.

“Make sure it stays that way.”

Adrian stepped back.

“No.”

Evelyn watched him.

“Your family chose silence.”

The Missing Minutes

Rachel arrived at the warehouse.

Adrian had secretly contacted her before entering.

She immediately recognized Evelyn.

“You’re alive.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Because Claire saved me.”

Adrian looked at her.

“She saved you?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn explained.

Before Claire died, she discovered Evelyn had survived.

She found her hidden away under another identity.

She was preparing to bring her forward as a witness.

“Claire was going to expose everything.”

Adrian whispered:

“And someone stopped her.”

Rachel looked at the evidence.

“There’s something missing.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Rachel pointed at the accident photographs.

“The car.”

Adrian frowned.

“What about it?”

“The brake system.”

She zoomed in.

“The damage pattern is wrong.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Because the brakes were not cut.”

Adrian looked confused.

“Then what happened?”

Evelyn answered:

“Claire was forced off the road.”

Silence.

“By who?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Someone she trusted enough to stop for.”

Adrian felt his stomach drop.

Because Claire trusted very few people.

And one person had arranged to meet her that night.

Caleb.

The Final Piece

Before leaving, Evelyn handed Adrian one last envelope.

“Claire wanted you to have this.”

“When did she give it to you?”

“An hour before she died.”

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then I was right.

The person who betrayed me was someone I loved.

But please do not make the mistake of hating everyone who lied.

Some people lied because they were evil.

Others lied because they were afraid.

Adrian continued.

Find the truth.

But do not lose yourself trying to punish them.

At the bottom:

The accident was not meant to kill me.

Adrian froze.

The next line made his blood run cold.

It was meant to kill both of us.

Rachel looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Before Adrian could answer…

His phone rang.

Caleb.

Adrian answered.

His brother’s voice was shaking.

“Adrian…”

“What?”

“I need you to listen carefully.”

Silence.

“Mom knows you found Evelyn.”

Adrian froze.

“How?”

Caleb whispered:

“Because she was the one who sent someone to find her.”

A pause.

“And Adrian…”

“What?”

Caleb’s voice broke.

“She didn’t want Evelyn killed.”

Another pause.

“She wanted you killed.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared into the darkness.

Because the truth about Claire’s accident was finally revealed.

But the person who had been protecting the secret for years…

Was not running away.

They were coming for him.
