Chapter 7 – The Woman in Blue

Chapter 7 – The Woman in Blue
The sentence on the paper refused to disappear.
Even after Adrian had folded it.
Even after he had placed it inside his coat pocket.
Even after he had walked away from the wreckage of the parking garage.
The words followed him.
“The person you love most is the one who betrayed you.”
For three years, Adrian believed betrayal had one face.
Claire’s death had a villain.
A person.
A reason.
He just needed to find it.
But now the truth was becoming something much more painful.
Because betrayal was not hiding in the darkness.
It was sitting at his family table.
It was standing beside him at company meetings.
It was calling him brother.
It was calling him son.
And maybe…
It was wearing a blue dress beneath a crystal chandelier.
The Woman Everyone Trusted
Madison Cole had spent years creating a perfect image.
Beautiful.
Successful.
Generous.
Elegant.
The kind of woman magazines loved.
The kind of woman mothers approved of.
The kind of woman people believed without questioning.
But Claire knew her differently.
That was what haunted Adrian most.
Claire had not been suspicious of a stranger.
She had been suspicious of the person she loved.
The next morning, Adrian returned to the Westwood mansion.
The engagement decorations were still everywhere.
White flowers.
Golden ribbons.
Champagne glasses.
A celebration frozen in time.
A wedding that would never happen.
Rachel Morgan entered behind him.
“You’re sure about this?”
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
“Yes.”
“What are you looking for?”
“The truth.”
Rachel studied him.
“Truth usually destroys something.”
Adrian nodded.
“I know.”
Claire’s Closet
The locked room felt different now.
Before, it had been a memorial.
A place where Adrian preserved his memories.
Now it was evidence.
The cedar compartment remained open.
The first section had already been searched.
The second section was still hidden.
Adrian ran his fingers along the wooden panel.
Claire had built this place carefully.
She had wanted secrets protected.
Not hidden forever.
He pressed the hidden latch.
Nothing happened.
Rachel watched.
“Maybe Emma was wrong.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire was never careless.”
He searched the edges.
Then stopped.
A small scratch.
Fresh.
Someone had opened this recently.
Rachel immediately moved closer.
“When?”
Adrian looked at the mark.
“After Claire died.”
Inside the hidden compartment was a small black box.
Not red.
Not jewelry.
Something else.
Adrian opened it.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
The note had only one sentence.
“The woman in blue was never my enemy. She was my warning.”
Adrian stared.
The woman in blue.
Emma’s words returned.
“The blue lady opened Mrs. Westwood’s closet.”
Madison.
The woman wearing blue.
But Claire’s message suggested something different.
Madison was not the enemy.
She was the warning.
The Photograph
Adrian picked up the photograph.
It showed three people.
Claire.
Madison.
And…
Margaret Westwood.
They were standing outside a hotel.
Three months before Claire’s death.
Adrian frowned.
“Why would Claire hide this?”
Rachel looked closer.
“Look at the date.”
Adrian did.
The photograph was taken the same week Claire created the secret account.
Something happened during that meeting.
Something important.
Then he noticed something else.
On Margaret’s hand was a ring.
A ring Adrian had never seen before.
Rachel zoomed in.
“That looks like a family seal.”
Adrian froze.
The Westwood family seal.
Only one person was supposed to own it.
His grandfather.
But his grandfather had died ten years ago.
The Flash Drive
They connected the drive to Claire’s old laptop.
A single folder appeared.
PROJECT BLUE
Adrian felt a strange sense of fear.
Claire had named it.
Not Madison.
Not a person.
A project.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Financial records.
Emails.
Photos.
Audio recordings.
Rachel opened the first file.
A conversation.
Margaret’s voice.
“We cannot let Claire expose this.”
Another voice.
Male.
Caleb.
“We don’t have a choice anymore.”
Adrian froze.
The recording continued.
“She knows too much.”
Margaret sounded angry.
“She is Adrian’s wife.”
Caleb answered:
“She’s becoming a threat.”
The recording ended.
Adrian sat back.
His own brother.
His own mother.
Talking about Claire like she was a problem to remove.
Rachel looked at him carefully.
“Are you okay?”
Adrian laughed quietly.
“No.”
Because there was no way to be okay after hearing your family discuss your wife’s destruction.
Madison Returns
That evening, Madison appeared at the mansion.
Alone.
Adrian almost called security.
But then he saw her face.
She looked exhausted.
“I need to tell you everything.”
He remained silent.
Madison entered slowly.
“I know you hate me.”
“I don’t know what I feel.”
That answer hurt her.
“I deserve that.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Why did Claire trust you?”
Madison’s eyes filled.
“Because I was the only person who knew what your family was capable of.”
The room became quiet.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you save her?”
Madison broke.
A tear fell.
“Because I was afraid.”
Adrian stared.
“For three years, I hated you.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were the reason she died.”
Madison whispered:
“I thought so too.”
That surprised him.
“What?”
Madison looked down.
“I thought Claire died because of me.”
She explained.
The night Claire died.
Claire had called Madison.
Not Adrian.
“She asked me to meet her.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You were there?”
Madison nodded.
“She showed me the evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“The proof against your family.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Then why did she leave?”
Madison looked terrified.
“Because someone followed us.”
A long silence.
“Who?”
Madison whispered:
“I never saw his face.”
“But?”
“But I recognized the car.”
Adrian’s heart stopped.
“What car?”
Madison looked at him.
“A black SUV.”
The same SUV from the parking garage.
Then Madison said something that changed everything.
“Adrian…”
Her voice trembled.
“The person driving it was not trying to kill Claire.”
A pause.
“They were trying to scare her.”
Adrian frowned.
“Then why did she crash?”
Madison looked at him.
“Because someone else cut her brakes.”
Silence.
The room became unbearable.
Because if Madison was telling the truth…
Then Claire’s death was not one crime.
It was a plan.
And the person who planned it was someone who knew Claire’s habits.
Someone who knew her schedule.
Someone who had access to her home.
Someone inside the Westwood family.
Suddenly, Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Stop searching.”
Adrian froze.
“Who is this?”
The voice laughed softly.
“You already know.”
The call ended.
A message appeared.
One photo.
Taken moments ago.
A picture of Adrian standing in Claire’s room.
From outside the window.
Someone was watching the mansion.
And beneath the picture were five words:
“Claire was not the first.”
Adrian stared.
Because now he understood.
Claire’s death was not the beginning.
It was the middle.
And someone had been hiding the first victim for years.
