Chapter 8 – The Second Box

Chapter 8 – The Second Box

The message remained on Adrian’s phone.

Five words.

Five words that changed the entire investigation.

“Claire was not the first.”

He read it again.

Then again.

As if the meaning would change.

As if the answer would somehow become less terrifying.

It did not.

For three years, Adrian believed Claire’s death was the beginning of the nightmare.

The first tragedy.

The moment everything went wrong.

But someone had just told him something worse.

Claire had not been the beginning.

She had been the latest person caught in a pattern.

And someone had been hiding the truth long before Claire ever entered the Westwood family.

The Secret Beneath the Closet

Adrian returned to Claire’s dressing room.

Again.

The room had become a place where every memory carried a new meaning.

The perfume bottle on the vanity.

The photographs on the shelf.

The silk scarf hanging near the mirror.

Everything that once represented love now represented questions.

Rachel stood beside him.

“You think there’s another secret?”

Adrian looked at the cedar wall.

“Claire always had a reason.”

He remembered something.

A conversation from years ago.

Claire laughing while arranging her jewelry.

“Every house has two closets,” she had joked.

“One for clothes.”

“And one for things people don’t want found.”

At the time, Adrian thought she was joking.

She wasn’t.

He ran his fingers along the wooden panel.

Then stopped.

A small difference.

The first compartment had a simple lock.

This one…

Had no visible opening.

Rachel watched.

“How did you find the first one?”

“Claire taught me.”

“How?”

“She told me every secret has a weakness.”

Adrian pressed the corner of the panel.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something carved into the wood.

A tiny symbol.

A heart.

And beneath it:

A + C

Their initials.

He touched it.

A soft click echoed.

The panel moved.

Behind it was another compartment.

The second box.

What Claire Was Afraid To Reveal

Inside was a small red box.

Exactly as Emma described.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Claire’s Cartier box.

The one everyone believed had disappeared after the accident.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was not jewelry.

It contained:

A wedding ring.

A USB drive.

And a handwritten letter.

Adrian stared at the ring.

Claire’s wedding ring.

The ring police said was lost forever.

But it was here.

Safe.

Hidden.

Meaning one thing.

Someone had removed it from the crash scene.

Someone who knew exactly what they were looking for.

Claire’s Letter

Adrian unfolded the paper.

The handwriting immediately broke him.

Because it was Claire.

Real.

Alive.

Speaking to him.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then my worst fear has happened.

I wanted to tell you everything myself.

I wanted to sit across from you, hold your hand, and explain why I was afraid.

But I ran out of time.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

The person who is destroying our family is not someone who hates us.

That is what makes them dangerous.

A tear slipped down Adrian’s face.

They believe they are protecting the Westwood name.

Rachel looked at him.

The same phrase again.

Protecting the family.

Claire continued.

I discovered something about your family history. Something nobody wanted me to know.

Adrian kept reading.

The Westwoods have survived because people disappear before they can damage the name.

Silence.

Some disappear through money.

Some disappear through threats.

Some disappear permanently.

Adrian felt sick.

This was no longer about fraud.

No longer about business.

This was about a family built on fear.

The First Victim

The USB drive contained one video file.

Created twelve years earlier.

Adrian opened it.

A woman appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

Adrian did not recognize her.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

“My name is Evelyn Hart.”

Rachel immediately reacted.

“Wait.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You know her?”

Rachel’s face changed.

“She was my first major case.”

The video continued.

“I worked as an accountant for Westwood Holdings.”

The woman’s hands trembled.

“I discovered illegal transfers.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“I tried reporting it.”

She looked down.

“And then my husband died.”

Silence.

“They called it an accident.”

Adrian felt a chill.

Another accident.

The woman continued.

“My son disappeared.”

Rachel whispered:

“Oh my God.”

The video ended.

The Pattern

Rachel immediately opened her old investigation files.

“Evelyn Hart.”

She searched.

“Missing twelve years ago.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Why didn’t I know about this?”

“Because the case disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

“Someone sealed it.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Rachel looked at him.

“There’s more.”

She pulled out another document.

The person who requested the case seal.

Adrian stared.

The signature.

Margaret Westwood.

His mother.

The Woman in Blue Returns

Before Adrian could speak, the mansion alarm activated.

Everyone froze.

Rachel reached for her weapon.

A security alert appeared.

Unauthorized entry.

Location:

Claire’s bedroom.

Adrian ran upstairs.

The door was open.

Inside…

Madison stood beside Claire’s closet.

Adrian stopped.

“What are you doing?”

Madison turned.

Her face was pale.

“I came to get the second box.”

Silence.

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“You knew about it.”

Madison looked away.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Claire’s best friend looked broken.

“Because Claire told me.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Madison whispered:

“Because she made me promise.”

“Why?”

Madison looked at the red box.

“Because Claire knew if you found out too soon…”

A pause.

“You would go after them.”

Adrian stared.

“And?”

Madison’s eyes filled with tears.

“And they would kill you too.”

Then a sound came from downstairs.

A glass breaking.

Everyone froze.

Someone was inside the mansion.

Rachel moved first.

They rushed down.

The front door was open.

No intruder.

Only a package.

Adrian picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Claire.

Taken the night she died.

On the back:

“Ask your father why he buried the truth.”

Adrian went completely still.

His father.

A man dead for ten years.

A man who could not answer.

A man who had left behind more secrets than anyone alive.

Then Madison whispered:

“Adrian…”

He looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed at the photograph.

At the corner.

There was someone standing behind Claire.

A shadow.

A man.

And Adrian recognized the watch on his wrist.

Because he had seen it thousands of times.

It belonged to his father.
