Chapter 3 – Claire’s Final Recording

Chapter 3 – Claire’s Final Recording

The video ended.

But Adrian did not move.

For several minutes, he simply stared at the black screen.

Waiting.

Hoping.

For something impossible.

For Claire to appear again.

For her voice to come back.

For the last three years to become a nightmare he could wake up from.

But the screen remained dark.

And reality remained.

Claire was gone.

But she had left him one final message.

At 2:20 in the morning, the Westwood mansion was completely silent.

The guests had left.

The musicians had packed away their instruments.

The flowers from the engagement celebration were already beginning to wilt.

A night that was supposed to announce a new beginning had become the night everything collapsed.

Adrian replayed the recording.

Again.

And again.

He studied every movement.

Every word.

Every hesitation.

Because Claire was not just speaking.

She was warning him.

The video began with Claire sitting in her dressing room.

The same room where Adrian had found the hidden compartment.

She looked different from the woman he remembered.

Not because she was older.

Because she was afraid.

Claire was many things.

Brilliant.

Kind.

Stubborn.

But afraid was not a word anyone would use to describe her.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you are seeing this, something happened to me.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Those words hurt more than he expected.

Because Claire had known.

She had known something might happen.

And he had not been there.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know who will find this.”

Claire took a breath.

“But I need someone to know the truth.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“I was wrong about one thing.”

Claire looked down.

“I thought because Madison loved me, she would never hurt me.”

His heart tightened.

“She was my best friend.”

A pause.

“I trusted her with everything.”

The irony almost broke him.

Because that was exactly why nobody suspected her.

Madison was not a stranger.

She was family.

Claire continued.

“But people can love you and still destroy you.”

Adrian felt a chill.

“She didn’t start with hatred.”

Claire’s voice became softer.

“She started with jealousy.”

The video showed Claire opening a folder.

Inside were documents.

“She always admired my life.”

Claire said.

“My marriage. My family. My position.”

Adrian frowned.

Because he remembered Madison differently.

She had always seemed happy for Claire.

Always supportive.

Always celebrating her success.

But now he wondered.

Was it real?

Or was it carefully practiced?

Claire held up a document.

“This is a transfer record.”

Adrian froze.

“Money has been moving through accounts connected to Westwood Holdings.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Adrian, someone has been stealing from you.”

The room felt colder.

For years, Adrian believed his company problems came from business competition.

Market changes.

Bad investments.

Economic shifts.

But Claire had discovered something else.

Someone inside.

The video continued.

“I followed the transactions.”

Claire said.

“I found shell companies.”

She showed another file.

“And every path leads back to Madison.”

Adrian stopped the recording.

His hands tightened.

No.

Not yet.

He needed more.

He needed the whole truth.

He played it again.

Claire continued.

“Before you accuse her, understand something.”

Adrian looked up.

“She is not working alone.”

Silence.

The sentence changed everything.

Madison was not the entire story.

She was a piece.

Claire looked exhausted.

“I tried confronting her.”

A pause.

“She denied everything.”

Claire smiled sadly.

“Of course she did.”

Then her expression changed.

Fear returned.

“But after I confronted her…”

Claire looked toward the bedroom door.

“She stopped pretending.”

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“She told me something I will never forget.”

The video became quieter.

“She said: ‘Claire, you still don’t understand how this family works.’”

Adrian froze.

Because those words sounded familiar.

Very familiar.

The Westwood family had always operated differently.

Problems stayed inside.

Scandals disappeared.

People protected the name above everything else.

Claire continued.

“She told me nobody would believe me.”

The camera shook slightly.

“She told me Adrian would choose his family over me.”

Adrian felt a wave of guilt.

Because years ago…

Maybe Madison was right.

Not because he did not love Claire.

But because he had spent his entire life protecting the Westwood name.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“But she was wrong.”

A tear appeared in her eye.

“Because I know my husband.”

Adrian looked away.

“She will try to convince you I was unstable.”

Claire said.

“She will say I was stressed.”

“She will say I imagined things.”

Her voice became stronger.

“Do not believe her.”

The video paused.

Then Claire whispered:

“Adrian…”

He looked back.

“If I don’t make it…”

Her voice broke.

“Please remember that I loved you.”

Adrian covered his mouth.

For the first time in three years, he allowed himself to cry.

Not privately.

Not secretly.

Just honestly.

The video continued.

“There is something hidden in the second compartment.”

Adrian immediately sat straight.

Second compartment?

Claire looked toward the closet.

“The first one contains what I wanted you to find.”

A pause.

“The second contains what I was afraid someone would find.”

The recording suddenly glitched.

The image distorted.

Then Claire looked behind the camera.

Her expression changed.

Someone was there.

“Wait.”

The video ended.

Adrian stared.

“No.”

He grabbed the laptop.

“Come on.”

The file was corrupted.

Only one minute remained.

One minute he had not seen.

He tried opening it.

Nothing.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A soft creak.

Adrian immediately stood.

The mansion was supposed to be empty.

He walked toward the door.

Slowly.

Quietly.

The hallway was dark.

Then he saw it.

A shadow.

Moving near Claire’s bedroom.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

He walked closer.

And found something on the floor.

A small object.

A broken piece of jewelry.

Claire’s bracelet.

But that was impossible.

The bracelet had been inside the hidden compartment.

Someone had been inside.

Again.

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

And then he heard a voice.

“You should stop looking.”

He turned.

Nobody.

Only darkness.

The next morning, Adrian called Detective Rachel Morgan.

The detective who had investigated Claire’s accident three years earlier.

The detective who had quietly admitted she never believed the official report.

When she arrived, Adrian showed her everything.

The letter.

The video.

The bracelet.

Rachel listened silently.

Then she asked:

“Do you want the truth?”

Adrian looked at Claire’s photograph.

“Yes.”

Rachel opened her file.

A file she had kept hidden for three years.

“Because I never believed Claire’s death was an accident.”

Adrian stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Rachel looked away.

“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.”

She placed a photograph on the table.

A photograph of the accident scene.

Adrian looked at it.

Then stopped.

There was something wrong.

Something the police report never mentioned.

The tire marks.

They were not from Claire’s car.

Someone else had been there.

Rachel whispered:

“Your wife wasn’t driving away from someone.”

A pause.

“She was meeting someone.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“Who?”

Rachel turned over another document.

The name was written there.

Madison Cole.

Adrian felt the world shift.

Because Claire’s final recording had revealed the betrayal.

But the accident file revealed something worse.

Madison had not just known Claire.

She had been the last person to see her alive.
