Chapter 6 – The Secret Claire Left Behind

Chapter 6 – The Secret Claire Left Behind
The phone went silent.
But Adrian remained frozen.
Madison’s voice still echoed in his mind.
“The person who killed Claire is trying to kill me too.”
For three years, Adrian had imagined the moment he discovered the truth.
He imagined anger.
He imagined revenge.
He imagined confronting the person responsible and watching them finally admit what they had done.
He never imagined doubt.
Because now the impossible question stood in front of him.
What if Madison was not the monster?
What if she was simply another person trapped inside the same nightmare?
No.
Adrian shook his head.
He refused to let emotion control him again.
That was how he had lost Claire.
He had trusted.
He had assumed.
He had ignored the warnings.
He would not make the same mistake twice.
But he also knew one thing.
Claire had spent her final days searching for the truth.
And the truth rarely came in simple forms.
The Meeting in the Dark
Adrian traced Madison’s call.
The location appeared.
An old private parking garage near downtown Chicago.
The kind of place wealthy people used when they did not want to be seen.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then he remembered Claire’s final recording.
“Do not trust your family.”
Not Madison.
Not strangers.
His family.
At midnight, Adrian arrived.
He did not come alone.
Detective Rachel Morgan followed several cars behind.
Madison stood beneath a flickering light.
For the first time since Adrian had known her…
She looked terrified.
Not polished.
Not elegant.
Not controlled.
Just afraid.
“You came.”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Start talking.”
Madison looked around.
“He knows.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
She swallowed.
“Caleb.”
His expression changed.
“You’re saying my brother is threatening you?”
“I’m saying your brother is not who you think he is.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“Interesting.”
Madison looked at him.
“What?”
“You spent three years helping me believe Claire was unstable.”
Her face fell.
“I know.”
“You stood beside me at her funeral.”
“I know.”
“You let me hate myself.”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I know.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Then why should I believe anything you say now?”
Madison looked away.
Because she knew there was no easy answer.
“You shouldn’t.”
That surprised him.
“What?”
“You shouldn’t believe me.”
She took a breath.
“But you should listen.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Madison handed him a small envelope.
“Claire gave this to me.”
Adrian froze.
“When?”
“The day before she died.”
His hand tightened around the envelope.
“Why?”
Madison looked ashamed.
“Because Claire knew I was involved.”
The words were like a knife.
“Involved in what?”
Madison closed her eyes.
“Helping your family.”
The Secret Agreement
Inside the envelope was a document.
Not a letter.
Not a confession.
A contract.
Adrian read the first page.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
It was an agreement between:
Westwood Holdings
and
M. Cole Enterprises.
But it was not an investment agreement.
It was a protection agreement.
Adrian looked at Madison.
“What is this?”
Madison whispered:
“Insurance.”
“Against what?”
Her voice cracked.
“Against your father’s mistakes.”
Adrian stared.
Years ago, before Claire entered the Westwood family, his father had been involved in illegal financial activities.
Not violence.
Not murder.
But enough to destroy the company.
Enough to send people to prison.
Enough to ruin the Westwood name forever.
Madison’s company had secretly helped cover the damage.
“Why?”
Adrian asked.
“Because your mother asked me.”
His heart sank.
“My mother?”
Madison nodded.
“She knew Claire was investigating.”
Adrian stepped back.
Everything was becoming connected.
Margaret.
Caleb.
Madison.
The money.
The accident.
But something still bothered him.
“If my mother asked you to hide the truth…”
He looked at Madison.
“Why did Claire pay you?”
Madison’s eyes filled with guilt.
“Because Claire knew I was trapped.”
The Night Claire Discovered Everything
Madison sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“Claire found the financial records six months before she died.”
Adrian listened silently.
“She confronted your mother.”
“What happened?”
“Your mother begged her.”
“For what?”
“To protect the family.”
Madison looked at him.
“Claire refused.”
Adrian was not surprised.
That was Claire.
She loved people.
But she hated injustice.
“She told Margaret she would expose everything.”
Madison whispered.
“Then Caleb got involved.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Of course.”
Madison continued.
“Caleb told Claire the family would destroy itself if the truth came out.”
“And Claire?”
“She said a family built on lies deserved to fall.”
A painful silence followed.
“Then why did she pay you?”
Madison looked down.
“Because she found out something worse.”
Adrian waited.
“Caleb wasn’t just protecting your family.”
A pause.
“He was protecting himself.”
The Hidden Account
Madison pulled out another document.
“The twenty million dollars.”
Adrian looked at it.
“It wasn’t stolen.”
“What?”
“Claire created that account.”
“Why?”
“To collect evidence.”
Adrian stared.
The account was not money she took.
It was money she gathered.
Every illegal transaction.
Every payment.
Every hidden transfer.
Everything.
Claire had built a case.
“She was preparing to expose everyone.”
Madison whispered.
“Then why did she die?”
Madison looked away.
“Because someone found out.”
The garage became silent.
Adrian already knew the answer.
But he needed to hear it.
“Who?”
Madison’s lips trembled.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Don’t lie.”
“I’m not.”
She looked directly at him.
“Because the person who attacked Claire was wearing a mask.”
A pause.
“But Claire knew who it was.”
Adrian felt cold.
“She told you?”
Madison nodded.
“She sent me one message.”
“What message?”
Madison reached for her phone.
A screenshot appeared.
A message from Claire.
Sent at 11:47 p.m.
Only minutes before the accident.
“I know who it is.”
Adrian’s breathing stopped.
Below it:
“If anything happens to me, do not let Adrian trust the person closest to him.”
Adrian stared.
The person closest to him.
His mind immediately went to one person.
Madison.
But then another face appeared.
Caleb.
And finally…
Margaret.
A noise echoed through the parking garage.
Footsteps.
Madison suddenly looked terrified.
“No.”
“What?”
“He found me.”
A car engine started nearby.
Adrian turned.
A black SUV accelerated toward them.
“Move!”
He grabbed Madison and pulled her away.
The vehicle crashed into the concrete barrier exactly where they had been standing.
Glass shattered.
Metal screamed.
Someone inside the SUV watched them.
Then drove away.
Rachel arrived seconds later.
Adrian looked at the damaged car.
On the ground was something left behind.
A small envelope.
Inside was one sentence.
Written in Claire’s handwriting.
“Adrian, the person you love most is the one who betrayed you.”
Adrian stared at the words.
And for the first time…
He wondered if Claire’s final warning was not about Madison.
Because the person he loved most…
Was not his former best friend.
It was someone he shared blood with.
