Chapter 5 – The Family That Lied

Chapter 5 – The Family That Lied

Adrian Westwood had spent his entire life believing one thing:

Family protected family.

His father taught him that.

His grandfather taught him that.

The Westwood name survived because every generation understood one rule.

Never let outsiders see the cracks.

Problems stayed inside the house.

Pain stayed behind closed doors.

Secrets stayed buried.

But Adrian was beginning to understand something.

Sometimes the walls built to protect a family became the same walls that trapped it.

The document sat on his desk.

The secret account.

Twenty million dollars.

Claire’s money.

Transferred the day before her death.

To Madison Cole.

Payment for protection.

Four words.

Four words that destroyed everything Adrian thought he knew.

At first, he believed the obvious answer.

Madison had blackmailed Claire.

Madison had taken money.

Madison had something to hide.

But the more Adrian looked at the evidence, the less simple it became.

Because Claire had not written:

“Madison stole from me.”

She had written:

“Do not trust Madison.”

There was a difference.

Claire was careful with words.

She always had been.

Adrian picked up his phone.

He called Natalie.

She answered immediately.

“You found something.”

It was not a question.

“How did you know?”

“Because Claire was always afraid someone would find it.”

Adrian froze.

“Find what?”

Natalie was silent.

Too silent.

“Why do you know about this?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Because she told me.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another person who knew.

Another person who stayed quiet.

“When?”

“Two weeks before she died.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

Natalie’s voice broke.

“Because Claire begged me not to.”

Adrian stood.

“She begged you not to tell her husband?”

“No.”

Natalie answered softly.

“She begged me not to tell you until she had proof.”

Adrian stopped.

“Proof of what?”

Natalie whispered:

“That your family was involved.”

The words felt heavier than the account.

“My family?”

“Adrian…”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“Tell me.”

Natalie took a breath.

“Claire discovered financial transfers between Westwood Holdings and private accounts.”

“Whose accounts?”

“Your mother’s.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at the family portrait hanging in his office.

His parents.

His brother.

Him.

A perfect image.

But maybe it had always been a painting covering a broken wall.

Margaret Westwood arrived thirty minutes later.

She did not come because Adrian invited her.

She came because she always knew when something threatened the family.

“You’re asking questions you shouldn’t ask.”

Those were her first words.

Not:

“Are you okay?”

Not:

“What happened?”

Questions.

Warnings.

Adrian stared.

“You knew.”

Margaret’s expression remained calm.

“Knew what?”

“About Claire.”

A tiny change.

A small tightening around her eyes.

But Adrian saw it.

“You’re grieving again.”

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“I’m remembering.”

Margaret walked toward the window.

“You loved Claire.”

“Yes.”

“But you are letting your grief destroy you.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Because it was the same sentence everyone used.

Everyone except Claire.

“Did you know about the account?”

Margaret did not answer.

That was enough.

“Mom.”

Her shoulders lowered.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“Your father built this family from nothing.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

She turned.

“Money disappears quickly.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“Your father made mistakes.”

“Financial mistakes?”

Margaret looked away.

“Your father trusted the wrong people.”

“And Claire found out?”

Silence.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Did she threaten to expose you?”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Watch your words.”

“No.”

His voice shook.

“I want answers.”

For years, Adrian had been the son who obeyed.

The son who protected.

The son who carried the Westwood name.

But tonight…

He was a husband demanding justice.

Margaret looked at him.

And said something that changed everything.

“Claire was not supposed to know.”

The room went silent.

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret realized her mistake.

Too late.

She looked away.

“I’m tired.”

“Mom.”

“I said I’m tired.”

And she walked away.

That night, Adrian searched old family records.

He found something strange.

Three years earlier, just before Claire’s death…

Westwood Holdings had nearly collapsed.

A major investment had failed.

A lawsuit was coming.

The company should have lost millions.

But it didn’t.

Someone saved it.

A private investor.

Unknown.

Hidden.

The name was confidential.

Adrian contacted his legal department.

Hours later, the answer came.

The investor was:

M. Cole Enterprises.

Madison.

Adrian sat back.

The truth became darker.

Madison had not entered their lives after Claire died.

She had been involved before.

Much before.

Then another file appeared.

A marriage agreement draft.

Not signed.

But prepared.

Between:

Adrian Westwood.

And Madison Cole.

Date created:

Six months before Claire’s accident.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Six months before Claire died…

Someone had already planned his future.

The next morning, Adrian confronted Caleb.

This time, he brought the documents.

Caleb looked at them.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

The sentence came quietly.

Adrian stared.

“What did you say?”

Caleb realized his mistake.

“Caleb.”

His brother looked away.

“How long?”

Silence.

“How long did you know?”

Caleb finally spoke.

“Since before Claire died.”

Adrian felt something inside him break.

“You knew she was in danger?”

Caleb said nothing.

“You knew?”

“I didn’t think they would go that far.”

Those words destroyed him.

“They?”

Caleb closed his eyes.

Too late.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who?”

Caleb whispered:

“Madison.”

A pause.

“And Mom.”

The room became completely silent.

Adrian stared at his younger brother.

The person he grew up with.

The person who shared his childhood.

The person who stood beside him at Claire’s funeral.

“You watched me bury my wife.”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice was broken.

“You were protecting yourselves.”

Caleb looked down.

Then Adrian asked the question that had haunted him for three years.

“Did Claire know?”

Caleb did not answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because his silence was the answer.

Claire knew.

She knew everyone was lying.

She knew her closest people were betraying her.

And somehow…

She still tried to save them.

That evening, Adrian returned to Claire’s room.

He opened her journal again.

A new page caught his attention.

A page he had missed.

Claire had written one sentence:

“The person who destroys me will not be my enemy. It will be the person I trusted most.”

Below it was another line.

“Adrian, if you find this, please understand one thing.”

His hands trembled as he turned the page.

“I never stopped loving you.”

But beneath that…

A final sentence.

“I was afraid you would hate yourself when you discovered the truth.”

Adrian froze.

Because Claire had known.

She had known he would blame himself.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Adrian…”

He recognized it immediately.

Madison.

“Where are you?”

Silence.

Then:

“Please help me.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

Madison’s voice shook.

“Because the person who killed Claire is trying to kill me too.”

The call ended.

And for the first time…

Adrian wondered if Madison Cole was the villain.

Or the next victim.
