Chapter 1 – The Voice Behind the Recording

Chapter 1 – The Voice Behind the Recording

Richard Cole did not blink.

The voice coming from Maya's phone belonged to a man he had trusted for more than thirty years.

A man who had stood beside him at board meetings.

A man who had carried his son's coffin.

A man who had comforted him after every tragedy.

His younger brother.

Daniel Cole.

The recording continued.

Vanessa's whisper was clear despite the clinking dishes in the background.

"Once he signs, he won't remember dinner. Tomorrow, we tell everyone his mind is finally gone."

Then Daniel answered in his calm, familiar voice.

"Don't rush. Let the medicine work first. He's already forgetting things. Tonight just gives us proof."

Richard felt every muscle in his body tighten.

He had spent months wondering why he occasionally misplaced documents or forgot conversations. His physician had suggested age-related memory problems. Vanessa had gently encouraged him to "slow down" and let others handle the company.

Now every strange moment suddenly fit together.

None of it had happened naturally.

Someone had been creating those moments.

Vanessa lunged toward Maya again.

"Delete it!"

Before she could reach the phone, Richard stepped between them.

"Enough."

His voice was low.

Dangerously low.

Years of leading one of Chicago's largest financial empires had taught everyone in the room one thing.

Richard Cole only raised his voice when he had already lost control.

The quieter he became...

The more frightened people should be.

Vanessa froze.

Richard slowly extended his hand toward Maya.

"May I?"

She nodded and placed the phone in his palm.

Richard replayed the recording.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every breath.

When it finished, he looked directly at Vanessa.

"You drugged me."

She shook her head immediately.

"It isn't what it sounds like."

"What does it sound like?"

"I... I only wanted you to relax."

"Relax?"

Richard lifted the untouched wineglass.

"So you mixed a sedative into a seventy-two-year-old man's medication schedule without his knowledge?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"It wasn't dangerous."

Maya spoke quietly.

"If it wasn't dangerous... why hide it?"

Vanessa glared at her.

"You need to stay out of family matters."

Richard turned sharply.

"No."

His eyes never left Vanessa.

"She's the only reason I'm still alive tonight."

Silence settled over the private dining room.

Outside, soft piano music from the restaurant continued as though nothing had happened.

Inside, every breath felt heavy.

Richard pressed the intercom button beside the dining room door.

Within seconds, the restaurant manager hurried inside.

"Mr. Cole?"

Richard pointed toward the entrance.

"Lock this room."

The manager hesitated.

"Sir?"

"No one enters."

"No one leaves."

The manager immediately nodded.

"Yes, sir."

The electronic lock clicked.

Vanessa's face paled.

"Richard, this is ridiculous."

"No."

He calmly placed the wineglass on the table.

"This is evidence."

Maya carefully unfolded the tiny white packet she had recovered from beneath the tablecloth.

Richard examined it without touching it.

The label had been partially torn away.

Only a few printed letters remained.

"...zolam."

His expression darkened.

He knew enough medicine to recognize the ending.

A benzodiazepine.

Powerful enough to cause confusion.

Memory gaps.

Loss of judgment.

Exactly the symptoms everyone had been blaming on his age.

Richard looked toward the documents resting beside his chair.

His estate plan.

Corporate authorization papers.

Medical directives.

Vanessa had insisted tonight was the perfect evening to sign everything because "the family was finally together."

His stomach turned.

"If I had signed these..."

Maya finished the sentence softly.

"...everyone would believe you signed them willingly."

Vanessa slammed both hands onto the table.

"You are believing a waitress over your own family?"

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

Then he asked the question she least expected.

"When did you stop loving my son?"

The room became perfectly still.

Vanessa's mouth opened.

No words came.

Richard continued.

"Because the woman Michael married would never have done this."

Tears suddenly appeared in Vanessa's eyes.

For a brief second...

She looked convincing.

"I loved him."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"You loved what came after he died."

The inheritance.

The influence.

The access.

Vanessa's expression cracked.

For the first time that night, genuine panic replaced practiced elegance.

"You don't know what you're saying."

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

Richard turned toward Maya.

"Did you hear anything else?"

She hesitated.

"I wasn't trying to eavesdrop."

"Tell me anyway."

"I was picking up a tray outside the service corridor."

She took a slow breath.

"I heard Ms. Cole say..."

She glanced uneasily at Vanessa.

"...'Once tonight is over, nobody can stop us.'"

Richard nodded slowly.

"And then?"

"I heard a man laugh."

Her voice became quieter.

"He said..."

She closed her eyes, remembering every word.

"After tomorrow, Cole Holdings belongs to our family."

Richard frowned.

"Our family?"

Maya nodded.

"I remember those exact words because I thought they sounded strange."

Richard looked back at Vanessa.

"Our family?"

She looked away.

Richard suddenly understood something that chilled him even more than the drugged wine.

This had never been Vanessa acting alone.

This had been planned.

Carefully.

Patiently.

For years.

He picked up his own phone and pressed a speed-dial number.

The call connected almost immediately.

"Mr. Hayes speaking."

"Tom."

Richard's voice was firm.

"I need you to come to Bellamy's Restaurant immediately."

There was a brief pause.

"Is something wrong?"

"Bring Dr. Collins."

"My attorney?"

"Yes."

"And my physician."

Another pause.

"I'll be there in twenty minutes."

Richard ended the call.

Vanessa forced a smile.

"You don't need lawyers."

"I think I do."

"And doctors?"

Richard picked up the wineglass once more.

"I'd like to know exactly what my daughter-in-law has been putting into my body."

Her face drained of color.

Maya suddenly remembered something.

"Mr. Cole..."

"Yes?"

"I don't think tonight was the first time."

Richard turned toward her.

"What makes you say that?"

She reached into the pocket of her apron.

"I almost threw this away after cleaning your private dining room last month."

She unfolded a tiny plastic packet identical to the one on the table.

"I found this beside your chair after another dinner."

Richard stared at it.

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

Maya continued.

"I thought it belonged to someone's medication."

"I kept it because..."

She looked embarrassed.

"...I forgot to throw it away."

Richard slowly accepted the packet.

Two identical wrappers.

One month apart.

His heart sank.

This had not begun tonight.

Someone had been poisoning his judgment for weeks.

Maybe months.

Maybe longer.

Before anyone could speak again, Richard's phone vibrated.

The caller ID displayed a single name.

Daniel Cole.

Richard answered without taking his eyes off Vanessa.

"Daniel."

His brother sounded cheerful.

"Richard, dinner finished already?"

Richard's voice was perfectly steady.

"It has."

"Excellent."

Daniel chuckled softly.

"So..."

May you like

A brief pause.

"Did he sign?"
