Chapter 3 – A Widow's Mask

Chapter 3 – A Widow's Mask

The security alarm continued to echo through the mansion.

A sharp, mechanical sound.

Relentless.

Urgent.

No one inside Richard Cole's study moved.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the intercom.

The head of security spoke again.

"Mr. Cole, we've searched the west wing. A window has been forced open."

Richard's face remained unreadable.

"Was anything taken?"

"We don't know yet, sir."

"Seal every entrance."

"Already done."

Richard ended the call.

Then he looked at everyone in the room.

"No one leaves until I know who broke into my house."

A Mansion Full of Secrets

The Cole estate had stood for nearly eighty years.

Built by Richard's grandfather, it was less a home than a monument to the family's success.

Three floors.

Two libraries.

A ballroom.

Twenty-three bedrooms.

Miles of security wiring.

And countless places where secrets could hide.

Maya suddenly understood something.

Whoever had broken in knew the house.

This wasn't random.

It was targeted.

Vanessa's Calm

While everyone discussed the break-in, Vanessa quietly reached for her purse.

Maya noticed.

"So soon?"

Vanessa looked up.

"I need my medication."

"No."

Richard's voice stopped her.

"You'll stay where I can see you."

Vanessa forced a smile.

"You think I staged this?"

"I don't know what to think anymore."

She slowly placed the purse back on the sofa.

But Maya noticed something.

Vanessa's hand was shaking.

Not from fear.

From frustration.

Before Michael Died

Richard walked to the fireplace.

His eyes settled on Michael's portrait.

"I keep asking myself the same question."

Nobody interrupted him.

"What changed?"

Thomas frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Richard sighed.

"Michael."

He looked at the photograph.

"For years he adored Vanessa."

"He couldn't stop talking about her."

"They traveled together."

"They laughed together."

"They built a life together."

A pause.

"Then..."

"He changed."

Richard remembered.

About six months before Michael's death...

His son had become distant.

Restless.

Always checking behind him.

He stopped bringing Vanessa to board dinners.

He quietly removed her from several company meetings.

When Richard asked why...

Michael always smiled.

"It's nothing, Dad."

Richard believed him.

Now...

He realized it had never been nothing.

The Perfect Widow

After Michael's funeral, Vanessa became the grieving widow everyone admired.

She dressed in black for almost a year.

Visited the cemetery every Sunday.

Started a scholarship in Michael's name.

Hosted charity events.

Comforted Richard whenever his grief overwhelmed him.

The newspapers called her

"The devoted daughter-in-law who never abandoned her husband's family."

Richard had believed every word.

Tonight...

Those memories felt different.

Too perfect.

Almost rehearsed.

Maya Remembers

Maya hesitated.

"Mr. Cole..."

Richard turned.

"I think I've seen Mrs. Cole before."

Vanessa looked up sharply.

"What?"

Maya frowned.

"I didn't remember until now."

"It was almost two years ago."

"You came into the restaurant."

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"I've eaten at hundreds of restaurants."

"No."

Maya shook her head.

"You weren't eating."

"You were meeting someone."

Richard watched Maya carefully.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"It was late."

"The restaurant was almost empty."

"I was clearing tables."

Maya closed her eyes, searching her memory.

"The man handed you a thick envelope."

Vanessa answered immediately.

"You're mistaken."

Maya ignored her.

"You counted money."

Silence.

Richard slowly looked toward Vanessa.

"Money?"

Vanessa folded her arms.

"So now she's inventing stories."

Maya spoke quietly.

"I remember because..."

She hesitated.

"...Michael arrived a few minutes later."

Everyone froze.

Richard stepped closer.

"Michael?"

"Yes."

"He looked furious."

"What happened?"

"They argued."

"What about?"

"I couldn't hear everything."

She swallowed.

"But I heard one sentence."

Richard's heartbeat quickened.

"What sentence?"

Maya looked at Vanessa.

Michael had pointed directly at her and said:

"You lied to me from the beginning."

The Hotel Receipt

Thomas suddenly spoke.

"Richard."

"What?"

"I found something."

Inside the folder of legal documents...

A folded receipt had become trapped between two pages.

Richard took it.

It wasn't recent.

The date shocked him.

Two years earlier.

The week before Michael died.

A luxury hotel downtown.

Suite 1807.

Two guests.

The names had been removed.

But the payment method remained.

Daniel Cole Corporate Account.

Richard slowly raised his head.

"Daniel paid for this?"

Thomas nodded.

"It appears so."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"I've never seen that receipt."

Richard looked at her.

"Then why is it inside paperwork you prepared?"

She had no answer.

The Maid's Testimony

The butler knocked softly.

"Sir?"

"Come in."

An elderly woman stepped into the study.

Her name was Helen.

She had worked for the Cole family for thirty-eight years.

Richard looked surprised.

"Helen?"

She held a small jewelry box.

"I heard what happened."

Richard smiled sadly.

"You shouldn't be involved."

"I already am."

She placed the box on the desk.

"I found this while cleaning Michael's bedroom after the funeral."

Richard slowly opened it.

Inside...

A wedding ring.

Vanessa gasped.

"That's impossible."

Richard stared.

Michael's wedding ring had supposedly disappeared after his accident.

Yet here it was.

Untouched.

Hidden.

Helen quietly said,

"I never gave it to anyone."

"I was waiting."

"For what?"

She looked directly at Richard.

"For the day you finally started asking the right questions."

Cracks in the Mask

Richard turned toward Vanessa.

His voice remained calm.

"Why wasn't Michael wearing his wedding ring the night he died?"

Vanessa stared at the ring.

"I..."

"You told police it was lost in the crash."

"I thought..."

"You thought?"

She could no longer maintain her composure.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I don't know!"

She screamed.

"I don't remember!"

The room fell silent.

Richard watched carefully.

She wasn't pretending this time.

Her panic looked genuine.

Thomas leaned toward Richard.

"She may not know everything."

Richard frowned.

"What are you saying?"

"Someone could have manipulated her too."

Vanessa looked up in confusion.

"No..."

Thomas continued.

"If Daniel was controlling the finances..."

"And the documents..."

"He may have been controlling Vanessa as well."

Richard wasn't convinced.

But for the first time...

He wondered if Vanessa had been both a conspirator...

And a pawn.

A Visitor in the Night

Just after midnight, another call came from security.

"Mr. Cole."

"What now?"

"We found someone hiding in the garden."

Richard frowned.

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

"It's... one of your former employees."

"Name?"

"Olivia Bennett."

Richard's expression changed.

Olivia.

Michael's personal secretary.

She had resigned suddenly the week after Michael died.

No explanation.

No farewell.

She had vanished.

Richard looked toward Thomas.

"Bring her in."

Ten minutes later...

Olivia entered the study.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

As if she had spent two years running from something.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Richard.

Finally she whispered:

"I can't run anymore."

Richard stepped closer.

"What do you know?"

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"I know why Michael died."

The room fell into complete silence.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"It wasn't Vanessa who planned it."

Richard's heart stopped.

"If not Vanessa..."

Olivia looked toward the family portrait on the fireplace.

Then whispered one name.

"Daniel."
