Chapter 8 – Michael's Secret Drive

Chapter 8 – Michael's Secret Drive
Richard Cole drove back to the mansion in complete silence.
Snow fell steadily across the Chicago suburbs, blurring the roads ahead, but his thoughts were fixed on only one thing.
Michael's laptop.
For three years, everyone had believed it had been destroyed in the crash.
If it still existed...
So might every secret his son had died trying to protect.
Beside him, Maya stared out the window, replaying everything that had happened since the dinner at Bellamy's. Less than twenty-four hours earlier, she had been an ordinary waitress. Now her apartment had been ransacked, she was receiving death threats, and powerful people were trying to erase every witness connected to Michael Cole.
Someone was terrified of the truth.
An Unexpected Visitor
When Richard's car rolled through the estate gates, security officers were everywhere.
Additional patrol vehicles lined the driveway.
The woman Helen had mentioned sat quietly in the library under the watch of two guards.
She appeared to be in her early sixties.
Gray hair.
Simple clothes.
Nervous hands.
The moment Richard entered, she stood.
"Mr. Cole."
He studied her carefully.
"Do I know you?"
"My name is Grace Donovan."
Richard searched his memory.
Nothing.
"I worked in your company's technology department for eighteen years."
Thomas frowned.
"I remember Grace."
"She retired shortly after Michael died."
Grace nodded.
"I didn't retire."
"I resigned."
"Why?"
She looked down.
"Because I was afraid."
Michael's Last Request
Grace placed an old canvas messenger bag on the coffee table.
Its zipper was worn.
The fabric stained with age.
"I've been keeping this since the night before Michael died."
Richard slowly opened the bag.
Inside was a silver laptop.
A portable hard drive.
And three USB flash drives.
Richard's hands trembled.
"This is his..."
Grace nodded.
"Michael brought it to me personally."
She closed her eyes, remembering.
"He said..."
"If anything happens to me, don't give this to anyone except my father."
Richard felt a painful knot tighten in his chest.
"He knew."
Grace whispered,
"I think he did."
Why She Waited
Richard looked at her.
"Why didn't you come to me three years ago?"
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
"Because someone came to my house first."
The room became silent.
"They told me Michael had died."
"They already knew about the laptop."
Aaron Brooks stepped forward.
"Who?"
"I never saw his face."
"He wore gloves."
"He told me..."
She shivered.
"Forget Michael ever gave you anything."
"And if you don't?"
Grace swallowed.
"He said my grandson would disappear."
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
Three years.
She had lived in fear for three years.
"I believed I was protecting my family."
She looked at Richard.
"But after seeing your interview on the news this morning..."
"I realized they're still hurting people."
"So I came."
The Password
Kevin Marshall connected the laptop to an isolated workstation.
The screen flickered to life.
A password prompt appeared.
Richard smiled sadly.
"I know this."
Everyone looked at him.
"Michael used the same password for years."
He typed carefully.
Claire1989.
Access denied.
Richard frowned.
"That's impossible."
Grace stepped closer.
"He changed it the week before he died."
Kevin tried another combination.
Nothing.
Thomas sighed.
"We may need a forensic specialist."
Maya had been silent until now.
Then she noticed something.
A tiny engraving beneath the keyboard.
Three letters.
E.M.C.
She looked at Richard.
"What was Michael's full name?"
"Michael Evan Cole."
She smiled faintly.
"What if..."
"Those aren't initials."
Kevin looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
She pointed to the numbers on the keyboard.
"E, M, C..."
Richard suddenly understood.
"They correspond to..."
He typed another sequence.
Then pressed Enter.
The laptop unlocked.
The Hidden Drive
The desktop appeared.
Only three folders.
Family
Finance
If Dad Finds This
No one spoke.
Richard clicked the final folder.
It was empty.
Or so it seemed.
Kevin frowned.
"Wait."
He opened the system settings.
"A hidden partition."
Another encrypted drive.
Its title read:
Project Lighthouse
Richard looked at Grace.
"Did Michael ever mention that name?"
She nodded slowly.
"Only once."
"What did he say?"
"He told me..."
"Lighthouses exist because someone wants ships to survive the storm."
Michael's Video
Kevin finally decrypted the hidden drive.
One video file appeared.
Recorded two days before Michael died.
Richard clicked Play.
The screen filled with Michael's face.
He looked exhausted.
Dark circles beneath his eyes.
Unshaven.
Terrified.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...something happened to me."
Richard lowered his head.
Michael continued.
"Dad..."
"I hope I'm wrong."
"But if I'm not..."
"Don't trust what everyone tells you."
He paused.
"I've uncovered financial transfers worth nearly two hundred million dollars."
Thomas gasped.
"Two hundred million?"
Michael nodded on screen.
"The money isn't disappearing."
"It's being moved."
"Through shell companies."
Richard frowned.
"Who?"
Michael answered immediately.
"I don't know yet."
"But I know who helped cover it up."
His expression hardened.
"Daniel."
Silence consumed the room.
The Interrupted Recording
Michael continued speaking.
"I wanted to tell you in person."
"But someone is watching me."
He looked toward the office door.
As if expecting someone to enter.
"If anything happens..."
He reached toward the camera.
Suddenly...
The video glitched.
Static.
The screen froze.
Kevin cursed quietly.
"The file's damaged."
For several tense seconds, the image remained frozen.
Then it resumed.
But Michael was gone.
Only his empty office remained.
Footsteps echoed somewhere beyond the camera.
A woman's voice whispered.
"He's coming back."
Then another voice answered.
A man's voice.
Cold.
Calm.
"We're too late."
The recording ended.
A Second Folder
Kevin searched deeper into the drive.
Another hidden folder appeared.
Its name was simple.
Insurance
Inside were scanned bank statements.
Wire transfers.
Corporate invoices.
Richard stared at one document.
A payment of $5 million.
Sent three days after Michael's death.
Recipient:
North Shore Consulting Group.
Thomas immediately frowned.
"That's not a real consulting company."
Kevin typed quickly.
"It was dissolved..."
He stopped.
"When?"
"Two weeks after receiving the money."
Aaron looked at Richard.
"Someone paid five million dollars..."
"...right after Michael died."
One More File
At the bottom of the folder sat a single audio recording.
No title.
No date.
Richard pressed Play.
For several seconds...
Nothing.
Then voices.
Michael.
And Daniel.
Michael sounded furious.
"You think I won't tell Dad?"
Daniel laughed softly.
"You'll never get the chance."
A loud bang echoed.
The recording cut off.
No explanation.
No ending.
Only silence.
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
For the first time since reopening the investigation...
He no longer doubted what had happened.
Michael had not died because of bad weather.
He had uncovered something worth killing for.
And someone had already decided...
He would never reach home alive.
As everyone sat in stunned silence, Kevin noticed one final icon hidden in the corner of the screen.
A folder that had somehow escaped their attention.
Its label contained only two words.
Open Last.
Richard took a slow breath.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Whatever is in there..."
He looked at Michael's frozen image on the screen.
"...my son wanted us to understand everything else first."
He reached for the mouse.
Then clicked.
