Chapter 12 – The Last Betrayal

Chapter 12 – The Last Betrayal
Richard Cole stood motionless, his phone still pressed against his ear.
The line had gone dead.
But the voice lingered in his mind.
Dad... don't trust anyone at home.
It had sounded exactly like Michael.
Not similar.
Not close.
Exactly.
Aaron Brooks gently took the phone from Richard's hand.
"Let Kevin trace it."
Richard nodded numbly.
Within minutes, Kevin connected the device to his forensic software.
The results appeared almost immediately.
The call had lasted only seven seconds.
It originated from a disposable satellite phone.
Its location had been spoofed through multiple relays.
Impossible to trace.
Aaron sighed.
"Whoever made that call knew exactly what they were doing."
Richard stared out the bank's window.
"There are only two possibilities."
Thomas looked at him.
"Either someone is imitating Michael..."
"...or my son is alive."
No one dared answer.
Returning to the Mansion
By late afternoon, Richard returned to the Westwood Estate with Aaron, Thomas, Maya, Emily, and Grace.
The mansion looked unchanged.
Elegant.
Quiet.
Safe.
But Richard no longer trusted appearances.
As they stepped inside, Helen hurried toward them.
Her face was pale.
"Mr. Cole..."
"What happened?"
"I found someone in your private study."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Who?"
"They escaped before security arrived."
Aaron immediately headed upstairs.
The study door stood slightly open.
Inside, nothing appeared disturbed.
Until Kevin noticed the fireplace.
"The ashes."
Richard frowned.
"What about them?"
Kevin carefully sifted through the remains.
Burned paper.
Fragments of photographs.
Half-melted plastic.
Someone had destroyed documents only minutes earlier.
One Page Survived
Among the ashes, Kevin recovered a partially burned sheet.
Most of it was unreadable.
Only a few lines remained intact.
...transfer completed...
...Richard must sign before January...
...insurance beneficiary updated...
Thomas looked up.
"Insurance?"
Richard suddenly remembered.
"Michael's life insurance."
Aaron frowned.
"You never checked who the beneficiary was?"
Richard shook his head.
"I assumed it was the family trust."
Kevin opened the surviving digital files from Michael's laptop.
After several minutes, he found the policy.
His eyes widened.
"Richard..."
"What?"
"The beneficiary was changed."
"When?"
"Five days before Michael died."
"To whom?"
Kevin slowly turned the screen.
The new beneficiary was...
Vanessa Cole.
A Signature That Shouldn't Exist
Richard stared at the electronic document.
Michael's signature appeared at the bottom.
Emily immediately shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"He never signed that."
Richard frowned.
"How do you know?"
"Because he was with me that day."
She opened her phone and found an old photograph.
The timestamp matched the date on the insurance paperwork.
Michael was hundreds of miles away attending a charity event with her.
Aaron examined the signature.
"It was forged."
Thomas nodded.
"Again."
Another legal document.
Another fake signature.
Another carefully planned theft.
Helen's Secret
That evening, Helen quietly asked Richard if they could speak alone.
Inside the library, she locked the door.
"There is something I've hidden for three years."
Richard looked at her gently.
"You can tell me now."
Tears filled the elderly housekeeper's eyes.
"The night Michael died..."
"I saw Vanessa."
Richard remained silent.
"She wasn't crying."
"She wasn't shocked."
"She arrived before the police."
Aaron, who had quietly entered behind Richard, frowned.
"How could she know where the accident happened?"
Helen nodded.
"That's what frightened me."
Richard slowly asked,
"What was she doing?"
Helen looked down.
"She was burning something."
The Burned Envelope
Helen led them into the mansion's old boiler room.
Hidden behind loose bricks was a rusted metal box.
"I couldn't bring myself to throw it away."
Inside lay the charred remains of an envelope.
Most of it had burned beyond recognition.
But one corner survived.
Enough to reveal a return address.
Cole Holdings – Internal Audit Department.
Thomas immediately understood.
"Michael mailed evidence home."
Richard whispered,
"And Vanessa destroyed it."
The Gardener Speaks
The estate's elderly gardener, Mr. Lewis, asked to speak with Aaron.
"I didn't know if it mattered before."
Aaron listened carefully.
"What did you see?"
"Three years ago..."
"The morning after Mr. Michael died..."
"I saw Vanessa bury something."
"Where?"
"The old rose garden."
Richard looked toward the windows overlooking the snow-covered grounds.
"Show us."
Digging in the Snow
Security officers brought shovels.
Within minutes they reached frozen earth beneath the rose bushes.
Mr. Lewis pointed.
"Here."
The third shovel struck metal.
Clang.
Everyone froze.
A small steel lockbox emerged from the soil.
Rust covered its hinges.
Aaron carefully forced it open.
Inside were several objects wrapped in waterproof plastic.
A burned passport.
A broken cellphone.
A bloodstained necktie.
And...
A memory card.
Kevin smiled.
"That survived."
The Memory Card
Back inside the study, Kevin inserted the card into his computer.
A single video appeared.
Recorded from inside a moving car.
The timestamp read:
The night Michael died.
The camera faced the windshield.
Rain poured across the glass.
Michael was driving.
His phone rang through the car's speakers.
He answered.
"Daniel?"
Everyone leaned closer.
Daniel's voice came through clearly.
"Turn around."
Michael laughed bitterly.
"Not until Dad knows."
Daniel answered calmly.
"Then you're making the biggest mistake of your life."
The call ended.
Seconds later...
Headlights appeared in the rearview mirror.
A black SUV.
Following him.
Richard gripped the edge of the desk.
"It wasn't an accident."
The SUV accelerated.
The footage shook violently.
Michael looked into the mirror.
His expression changed from anger...
To fear.
Then—
The recording stopped.
The Last Betrayal
Silence filled the room.
No one moved.
Emily wiped away tears.
Maya stared at the frozen image of Michael's frightened face.
Richard finally spoke.
"So Daniel chased him."
Aaron nodded.
"We can prove attempted murder."
Thomas looked uneasy.
"Maybe."
Richard frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The video ends before the crash."
Aaron understood immediately.
"A defense attorney will argue we can't prove the SUV caused the accident."
Kevin suddenly interrupted.
"Wait."
He pointed to the bottom corner of the screen.
The dash camera had automatically uploaded GPS data.
The file contained a second attachment.
A map.
Showing every vehicle connected to Michael's onboard system.
Richard leaned closer.
There were two vehicles.
Michael's Mercedes.
And the black SUV.
Both traveling the same route.
Until one final point...
Where the SUV suddenly accelerated directly toward Michael's lane.
Aaron looked at Richard.
"They didn't just follow him."
"They forced him off the road."
Before anyone could speak again, every light in the mansion went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A gunshot echoed from somewhere downstairs.
Then came Helen's terrified scream.
"Mr. Cole!"
"They're inside the house!"
