Chapter 2 – The Papers Waiting Upstairs

Chapter 2 – The Papers Waiting Upstairs

Daniel's question hung in the air like a blade.

"Did he sign?"

No one in the private dining room breathed.

Richard slowly lifted his eyes to Vanessa.

The color drained from her face.

She knew exactly what Daniel had just done.

He had confirmed everything.

Richard pressed the speaker button.

The phone clicked.

Daniel's voice now filled the room.

"Richard? Are you there?"

Richard answered calmly.

"I'm here."

"Excellent."

Daniel laughed lightly.

"I assumed the paperwork would be finished by now."

Richard glanced toward the thick leather folder resting beside his chair.

"Not yet."

A brief silence followed.

Then Daniel spoke more carefully.

"Everything all right?"

Richard looked directly at Vanessa.

"I've had... an unexpected interruption."

Daniel hesitated.

"What kind of interruption?"

Richard's answer was simple.

"A very honest waitress."

The line went completely silent.

For nearly five seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel forced a laugh.

"I don't understand."

"I imagine you don't."

Richard ended the call.

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the table.

"Richard, please listen to me."

"I've been listening for two years."

He closed the leather folder.

"I simply wasn't hearing the truth."

Upstairs

Twenty-five minutes later, Richard's attorney, Thomas Hayes, and his longtime physician, Dr. Samuel Collins, arrived at the Cole estate.

The restaurant had been only the beginning.

Richard wanted answers.

All of them.

The group gathered inside Richard's private study on the second floor.

It was a room few people entered.

Dark walnut shelves lined every wall.

Family portraits overlooked the fireplace.

Michael's photograph occupied the center of the mantel.

His smile seemed almost alive.

Richard stared at the portrait for several seconds.

"I'm sorry."

The words escaped quietly.

Maya heard them.

She realized they were not meant for anyone in the room.

They were meant for his son.

The Documents

Thomas placed white gloves on his hands before opening the folder.

He carefully removed each document one by one.

The room remained silent except for the turning pages.

After nearly ten minutes, Thomas looked up.

His face had changed completely.

"Richard..."

"What?"

"You were right not to sign."

Richard folded his arms.

"Explain."

Thomas slid one document across the desk.

"This appears to be a revised power of attorney."

Richard frowned.

"I never requested a revision."

"You didn't."

Thomas nodded.

"But according to this..."

He pointed toward the signature line.

"...once signed, Vanessa Cole would immediately receive full legal authority over your personal finances."

Richard remained expressionless.

"And?"

Thomas reached for another document.

"This one transfers temporary voting control of your company shares."

"To whom?"

Thomas looked directly at Vanessa.

"Her."

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"Those papers were only drafts."

Thomas ignored her.

"The next document petitions the court to appoint a permanent guardian due to diminished mental capacity."

The room became deadly quiet.

Richard's jaw tightened.

"If I signed these..."

Thomas answered softly.

"You would legally surrender control of your company, your finances, your medical decisions..."

A pause.

"...and eventually your estate."

Maya felt cold.

Everything had been prepared.

Every signature.

Every witness line.

Every date.

Someone had expected tonight to go exactly as planned.

The Doctor Speaks

Dr. Collins examined the medication Vanessa had insisted Richard take every evening.

He removed several capsules from the bottle.

Then he frowned.

"These aren't correct."

Richard looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"I prescribed blue capsules."

He held up one of the pills.

"This one is white."

Vanessa spoke immediately.

"The pharmacy changed manufacturers."

Dr. Collins shook his head.

"No."

He broke one capsule open.

Fine white powder spilled onto a glass tray.

His expression darkened.

"This isn't your medication."

Richard felt his heartbeat slow.

"What is it?"

"I'll need laboratory confirmation..."

The doctor looked toward Vanessa.

"...but I believe someone replaced your prescription."

Maya looked at Richard.

"So every night..."

Dr. Collins nodded.

"He may have been taking something entirely different."

Richard closed his eyes.

For months he had blamed himself.

Forgotten appointments.

Repeated conversations.

Small lapses that embarrassed him during board meetings.

Vanessa had always been there.

Smiling.

Comforting him.

Telling everyone he was simply getting older.

Now every memory became something else.

Evidence.

Michael's Portrait

As Thomas continued reviewing the paperwork, Maya wandered toward the fireplace.

She stopped beneath Michael's portrait.

A silver frame rested beside it.

A family photograph.

Richard.

Michael.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Taken only weeks before Michael died.

Maya studied the picture carefully.

Something felt wrong.

"Mr. Cole?"

Richard turned.

"What is it?"

She lifted the photograph.

"May I ask something?"

"Of course."

"Who took this picture?"

Richard looked at it.

"I don't remember."

Maya frowned.

"That's strange."

"Why?"

"Because everyone is in the picture."

Richard blinked.

"So?"

"There had to be another person in the room."

Silence.

Richard slowly took the photograph.

She was right.

Someone else had been there.

Someone close enough to hold the camera.

Yet no one had ever mentioned another guest.

Thomas looked up from the documents.

"Do you know the date?"

Richard turned the frame over.

A handwritten note appeared.

October 14.

Richard's face slowly changed.

"No..."

"What?"

Thomas asked.

Richard looked toward Michael's portrait.

"That was the night Michael told me he wanted to change his will."

Vanessa Breaks

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"I've had enough."

She reached for her purse.

"I'm leaving."

"No."

Richard's voice echoed through the study.

She stopped.

"You'll stay until the police arrive."

"I haven't committed a crime."

Thomas quietly spoke.

"Attempted fraud."

He pointed toward the documents.

"Possible financial exploitation."

Then Dr. Collins added:

"Possible unlawful administration of medication."

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

"You can't prove anything."

Richard calmly placed the two empty packets on the desk.

"I think we can."

The Forgotten Safe

Before anyone spoke again, Richard walked toward an old oil painting beside the bookshelf.

He pressed a hidden switch.

The painting slid aside.

A steel wall safe appeared.

Maya watched silently.

Richard entered a six-digit code.

The safe opened.

Inside were only three items.

A leather journal.

A sealed envelope.

A small velvet box.

Richard picked up the envelope.

His hands trembled.

Written across the front in Michael's handwriting were five words.

Open if anything happens.

Richard stared at the envelope.

"I never saw this before."

Thomas frowned.

"How is that possible?"

Richard looked inside the safe again.

"The safe was empty after Michael's funeral."

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

She looked genuinely frightened.

"I've never seen that envelope."

Richard slowly opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Only one sentence had been written.

If you're reading this, don't trust Daniel. He knows why they're trying to erase your memory.

Richard's heart nearly stopped.

Thomas looked at the handwriting.

"It's authentic."

Dr. Collins whispered,

"My God..."

Maya looked toward Vanessa.

For the first time since the night began...

Vanessa wasn't acting.

She looked just as shocked as everyone else.

Which meant one terrifying possibility remained.

Someone else had entered Richard's study.

Someone else had opened the safe.

Someone who knew every secret in the Cole mansion.

Someone who had been one step ahead of all of them.

At that exact moment, the security alarm echoed through the house.

A guard's voice crackled over the intercom.

"Mr. Cole... someone just broke into the west wing."

The room fell silent.

Richard slowly closed the envelope.

Then he gave his first order.

"Nobody leaves this house."
