Chapter 13 – Justice for Michael

Chapter 13 – Justice for Michael

The gunshot echoed through the mansion.

For a fraction of a second, no one moved.

Then instinct took over.

Aaron Brooks drew his service weapon.

"Everyone stay behind me!"

Emergency lights flickered on, bathing the halls in a dim red glow. Somewhere downstairs, Helen screamed again.

"They're in the west wing!"

Richard didn't hesitate.

"They're after the evidence."

Kevin grabbed Michael's laptop and the recovered memory card, stuffing them into a protective case.

"They're not getting this."

The Intruders

Security officers rushed through the mansion.

Two masked men in black tactical clothing had forced open a side entrance.

They moved with military precision.

One headed toward Richard's study.

The other toward the security control room.

"They know exactly where they're going," Aaron muttered.

"This isn't robbery."

"It's a recovery mission."

A guard rounded the corner.

"Freeze!"

One intruder fired a flash device.

The hallway exploded in blinding white light.

By the time the guards recovered, the men had disappeared into the darkness.

Helen's Courage

Richard found Helen hiding behind a marble pillar.

She was shaken but unharmed.

"Helen."

She pointed upstairs.

"I saw one of them."

"They asked where Mr. Marshall was."

Kevin's face went pale.

"They're after the digital evidence."

Richard placed a reassuring hand on Helen's shoulder.

"You did the right thing."

She nodded through tears.

"I lied."

"I told them the files were already with the FBI."

Aaron gave her an approving smile.

"You may have saved all of us."

Cornered

One intruder reached the study.

He kicked open the door.

The room was empty.

The desk drawers had already been cleared.

The laptop was gone.

The masked man cursed.

He pulled out a phone.

"We're too late."

A familiar voice answered from the speaker.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Leave immediately."

The intruder hesitated.

"What about Richard?"

The voice replied,

"He's no longer the priority."

Aaron, standing silently outside the doorway, heard every word.

The moment the intruder stepped into the hall—

"Police!"

The man turned and ran.

A chase erupted through the mansion.

The Capture

The intruder reached the rear garden.

Snow slowed his escape.

He slipped near the frozen fountain.

Aaron tackled him before he regained his footing.

The second intruder escaped over the outer wall.

Breathing heavily, Aaron pulled away the man's mask.

Richard stared.

"I know him."

It was Eric Lawson.

Former head of security for Cole Holdings.

Richard had fired him six months after Michael's death for destroying internal records without authorization.

Aaron handcuffed him.

"Looks like we found someone who can answer questions."

Eric smiled.

"You think this changes anything?"

Richard looked down at him.

"I think you're finally out of people to hide behind."

The First Confession

Hours later, Eric sat in an interrogation room at Chicago Police Headquarters.

At first, he refused to speak.

Then Aaron placed the dashcam footage on the table.

Eric's confidence faltered.

"You were there," Aaron said quietly.

Eric looked away.

Aaron added another photograph.

The security footage from Bellamy's.

Then the forged insurance documents.

Then the hidden bank transfers.

One piece after another.

Finally, Aaron leaned forward.

"They've already abandoned you."

Eric laughed bitterly.

"I figured."

He remained silent for another minute.

Then he spoke.

"I didn't kill Michael."

Richard watched through the observation window.

"But you helped cover it up."

Eric lowered his head.

"Yes."

Vanessa's Mastermind

Aaron asked the question everyone wanted answered.

"Who gave the orders?"

Eric hesitated.

"It wasn't Vanessa."

"It wasn't even Daniel."

Richard frowned.

"Then who?"

Eric whispered a single name.

"Charles Whitmore."

The room fell silent.

"The money..."

Eric continued.

"...was his idea."

"He used Daniel to move it."

"He used Vanessa to control the family."

"And when Michael discovered everything..."

Aaron finished the sentence.

"They decided he couldn't live."

Eric nodded.

Michael's Final Hours

Eric's confession filled in the missing pieces.

Michael had confronted Daniel at Bellamy's Restaurant.

After leaving, he drove toward Richard's mansion.

Daniel immediately called Charles.

Charles ordered Victor Hale to ensure Michael never reached home.

The SUV followed Michael through the storm.

Victor forced Michael's Mercedes toward the guardrail.

But according to Eric...

That wasn't supposed to kill him.

"The brakes were already weakened."

"The impact was meant to finish the job."

Richard closed his eyes.

Every terrible piece now fit together.

The Arrests Begin

By sunrise, federal agents and state investigators executed warrants across Chicago.

Daniel Cole was arrested while attempting to board a private jet.

Margaret Whitmore resigned hours before being taken into custody.

Charles Whitmore was found hiding at a lakeside estate.

Vanessa, however...

Had disappeared.

The Last Video

Kevin recovered one final deleted file from Michael's laptop.

A short video.

Recorded only thirty minutes before the crash.

Michael smiled weakly into the camera.

"Dad..."

"If you're seeing this..."

"...it means they were faster than I was."

He looked tired.

"But peaceful.

"I know you."

"You'll blame yourself."

"Don't."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

Michael continued.

"You taught me that the truth matters."

"I just wish I'd told you sooner."

He reached toward the camera.

"And if Maya is with you..."

Maya gasped.

"...tell her none of this was her fault."

Tears rolled down Maya's cheeks.

Michael smiled one last time.

"She was kind to a stranger."

"I'll never forget that."

The screen faded to black.

Justice

Six months later...

The courtroom was filled with reporters.

Charles Whitmore was convicted of conspiracy, fraud, obstruction of justice, attempted murder, and first-degree murder.

Daniel Cole received life imprisonment for his role in Michael's death.

Victor Hale accepted a plea agreement and testified against the others.

Margaret Whitmore lost her office and was sentenced for corruption and obstruction.

Vanessa Cole was arrested in Switzerland after months on the run and extradited to the United States.

Her conviction came less than a year later.

Richard sat silently through every verdict.

None of them brought Michael back.

But every sentence honored the promise he had made.

No one would bury the truth again.

As the courthouse emptied, Maya stood beside Richard.

"It's over."

Richard looked toward the clear winter sky.

"No."

Maya frowned.

He smiled sadly.

"Justice is over."

"But remembering him..."

"...that's forever."

Far away, church bells echoed across downtown Chicago as Richard quietly whispered the words he had wanted to say for three long years.

"I'm proud of you, son."
