Chapter 5 – The Death That Never Made Sense

Chapter 5 – The Death That Never Made Sense

The mansion had never felt so quiet.

Outside, snow drifted across the gardens, covering the frozen ground in a blanket of white. Inside Richard Cole's study, every person remained fixed in place, unable to ignore the message that had just appeared on Maya's phone.

Stop helping Richard... or you're next.

Richard looked at the head of security.

"Trace the number."

The guard nodded. "Already trying, sir."

"And?"

"It's routed through multiple encrypted servers."

Richard wasn't surprised.

"Professional."

The guard lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Whoever was behind this had planned everything carefully.

For years.

The Accident File

Richard turned toward Thomas Hayes.

"I want Michael's entire accident file."

Thomas hesitated.

"The official police report?"

"Everything."

"Photos."

"Forensic reports."

"Insurance documents."

"The mechanic's inspection."

"Every page."

Thomas nodded.

"I'll have it delivered before sunrise."

Richard looked at Michael's portrait again.

"For three years..."

"I accepted the word 'accident.'"

His voice grew quieter.

"I don't intend to accept it anymore."

Four Hours Later

At three o'clock in the morning, six thick binders lay across Richard's conference table.

Every official record concerning Michael Cole's death.

Richard opened the first binder himself.

The front page read:

CASE CLOSED: VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Cause of death:

Multiple traumatic injuries following loss of vehicle control during severe weather.

No criminal investigation recommended.

Richard frowned.

"It always sounded too simple."

Thomas turned several pages.

"The weather report confirms heavy rain."

"Michael hated driving in storms."

Richard nodded slowly.

"He canceled business meetings because of rain."

"He always waited until the roads cleared."

Maya looked up.

"Then why was he driving that night?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

The Last Phone Call

Olivia suddenly remembered something.

"There was a phone call."

Richard looked at her.

"What phone call?"

"The night Michael died."

"He left the office suddenly."

"Why?"

"He received a call."

"Who called him?"

"I don't know."

"But I heard him say..."

She closed her eyes, remembering.

"I'll be there in twenty minutes. Don't do anything until I arrive."

Richard's heart skipped.

"He sounded frightened?"

Olivia nodded.

"Very."

"He ran out of the office."

"He didn't even take his laptop."

Thomas immediately wrote the sentence in his notebook.

"Whoever called him..."

"...lured him somewhere."

The Mechanic's Report

Dr. Collins opened another folder.

"Richard."

"You need to see this."

Inside was the inspection report from Michael's Mercedes.

Most of it appeared ordinary.

Until the final page.

One sentence had been highlighted.

Brake fluid pressure significantly below expected safety standards.

Richard frowned.

"I've never seen this."

Thomas looked confused.

"This page wasn't included in the copy sent to your insurance company."

Richard slowly looked up.

"What?"

"There are two different reports."

Silence.

One report mentioned mechanical failure.

The other did not.

Someone had removed evidence.

A Familiar Signature

Thomas compared both documents.

His expression darkened.

"The signatures don't match."

Richard leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

"The investigating officer signed both."

"But..."

He pointed carefully.

"...one signature is genuine."

"The other is forged."

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

"Someone altered the official file."

The Insurance Investigator

Thomas immediately called the retired insurance investigator who had handled Michael's claim.

An elderly man named Frank Donovan answered after several rings.

"Mr. Donovan."

"This is Thomas Hayes."

"I represent Richard Cole."

A pause.

"I wondered when he'd call."

Richard stepped closer.

"You knew?"

Frank sighed heavily.

"I knew something wasn't right."

"What?"

"The brakes."

"I wanted another inspection."

"So why didn't you get one?"

Another long silence.

Then Frank answered.

"Because someone above me closed the case."

"Who?"

"I never found out."

"But..."

His voice lowered.

"I received a promotion the next month."

Richard understood immediately.

Someone had paid for silence.

Michael's Watch

Helen, the longtime housekeeper, quietly entered the study carrying a small wooden box.

"Mr. Cole."

Richard looked up.

"What is it?"

"I remembered something."

She opened the box.

Inside rested Michael's wristwatch.

Richard smiled sadly.

"He loved that watch."

Helen nodded.

"I found it in the laundry after the funeral."

Richard frowned.

"Why wasn't he wearing it?"

"I don't know."

Maya picked it up carefully.

The watch had stopped.

Exactly.

8:43 PM.

Thomas checked the accident report.

"The police estimated the crash happened at..."

He stopped speaking.

Richard looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas slowly lowered the report.

"8:43."

The watch had stopped at the exact moment of impact.

Maya turned it over.

Something caught her eye.

"There are scratches."

Tiny marks covered the metal clasp.

Not from the crash.

From something sharp.

Almost...

As if someone had tried to remove it in a hurry.

A Witness Comes Forward

The intercom buzzed.

"Mr. Cole?"

"Yes?"

"A detective is here."

Richard frowned.

"At this hour?"

"He says the case concerns Michael Cole."

"Bring him in."

Minutes later, Detective Aaron Brooks entered the study.

He looked tired.

Older than Richard remembered.

"I heard you reopened the case."

Richard crossed his arms.

"I didn't know that was public information."

Aaron gave a weak smile.

"News travels fast."

He placed an old evidence envelope on the table.

"I've kept this for three years."

Richard stared.

"What is it?"

"A piece of Michael's car."

Thomas opened the envelope.

Inside lay a small section of damaged brake line.

Aaron spoke quietly.

"It wasn't cut."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"It was loosened."

Dr. Collins looked surprised.

"So it failed gradually."

Aaron nodded.

"Exactly."

"It gave Michael just enough control..."

"...until he reached high speed."

Maya whispered,

"So whoever did it..."

"...wanted it to look like an accident."

Aaron met Richard's eyes.

"I tried to convince my supervisor."

"What happened?"

"The case was taken away from me."

Richard already knew why.

Someone powerful had interfered.

Again.

The Final Photograph

As Aaron prepared to leave, he removed one last item from his briefcase.

"A crime scene photograph."

Richard accepted it.

His hands froze.

The image showed Michael's destroyed Mercedes at the bottom of the ravine.

Rain covered everything.

But one detail stood out.

Another vehicle.

Parked far above the crash site.

Partially hidden behind trees.

Aaron pointed toward it.

"We never identified that SUV."

Richard looked closer.

The license plate couldn't be read.

But the front grille carried a distinctive silver emblem.

Thomas's eyes widened.

"I know that model."

Richard looked at him.

"What is it?"

Thomas answered slowly.

"It's a limited-edition Land Rover."

Richard frowned.

"So?"

Thomas looked toward Olivia.

"Only one person in the Cole family owned that exact vehicle."

The room fell silent.

Olivia whispered the name before anyone else could.

"Daniel."

Richard closed his eyes.

For three years, he had mourned a tragic accident.

Now the evidence was telling a different story.

Someone hadn't merely watched his son die.

Someone had followed him to the place where he died.

And that someone...

Had never told the police they were there.
