Chapter 7 – The Break-In

Chapter 7 – The Break-In

The security chief stood at the doorway, his breathing uneven.

"Mr. Cole..."

Richard looked up from the evidence bag containing Victor Hale's driver's license.

"What happened?"

The guard swallowed.

"He escaped."

The room fell silent.

"What do you mean he escaped?" Detective Aaron Brooks demanded.

"We detained him at the front gate. While we were verifying his identity... the lights went out for less than thirty seconds."

Richard's expression darkened.

"And when the backup generator came on?"

"He was gone."

Aaron slammed his hand against the table.

"That wasn't an escape."

"It was an extraction."

Someone had come for Victor Hale.

Someone who couldn't afford to let him speak.

A Deliberate Blackout

The estate's chief of security hurried into the study carrying a tablet.

"Sir, we've reviewed the surveillance footage."

Richard folded his arms.

"Show me."

The video revealed the front gate.

Victor Hale stood between two security guards, his hands raised peacefully.

Then, without warning—

Every camera went black.

Exactly twenty-eight seconds later, the feed returned.

The guards were still standing there.

Confused.

Victor was gone.

Aaron frowned.

"Where did he go?"

The security chief zoomed in on another camera overlooking the driveway.

A black van sped away through the service exit.

No license plate.

Professional.

Richard looked at Thomas Hayes.

"They planned this."

Thomas nodded.

"They knew Victor was going to talk."

Maya's Apartment

Maya suddenly remembered the threatening photograph she had received earlier.

"My apartment..."

Richard looked at her.

"What about it?"

"The picture."

"It was taken tonight."

Aaron immediately understood.

"They've been watching you."

Richard didn't hesitate.

"You are not going home."

Maya blinked.

"I don't want to impose."

"This isn't a request."

His tone softened.

"You saved my life."

"I'm responsible for keeping you alive."

The Call

Just after dawn, Maya's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Aaron motioned for everyone to remain silent.

Richard pressed the speaker button.

A man's distorted voice filled the room.

"You should have minded your own business."

Maya gripped the edge of the table.

"Who is this?"

A low chuckle.

"You've become very important."

The line crackled.

"Important people..."

"...have short lives."

The call ended.

Aaron immediately began tracing it.

Two minutes later, he shook his head.

"Burner phone."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"They're escalating."

The Break-In

At seven-thirty that morning, another call arrived.

This time from Chicago Police.

Aaron answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He looked at Maya.

"When?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"Maya..."

She felt her stomach tighten.

"What happened?"

"Your apartment was broken into."

Silence.

"They destroyed everything."

Nothing Left

Richard insisted on accompanying Maya to the apartment.

Police tape surrounded the building.

The front door hung crookedly from its frame.

Inside...

Chaos.

Furniture overturned.

Cabinets emptied.

Every drawer pulled open.

Glass covered the floor.

Maya stood frozen.

Her tiny apartment looked as though a hurricane had passed through it.

She whispered,

"I don't understand..."

Aaron crouched beside a shattered bookshelf.

"This wasn't burglary."

Richard looked around.

"No electronics were taken."

"No jewelry."

"No cash."

Aaron nodded.

"They were looking for something."

The Missing Envelope

Maya slowly walked toward her bedroom.

Her closet stood open.

Boxes lay scattered across the floor.

Then she gasped.

"My mother's letters..."

Richard looked up.

"What?"

She knelt beside an empty storage box.

"They're gone."

"What letters?"

"My mother wrote to me before she died."

"They were all I had left."

Tears filled her eyes.

"They didn't take anything valuable."

"They only took those letters."

Aaron exchanged a glance with Richard.

Why would criminals steal old family letters?

Unless...

They weren't ordinary letters.

The Hidden Photograph

As Maya searched through the wreckage, something slipped from beneath her overturned dresser.

A faded photograph.

She picked it up.

It showed Bellamy's Restaurant.

Taken years earlier.

Employees stood in two neat rows.

Maya's mother smiled proudly in the front.

Behind them...

Richard frowned.

"What is that?"

Maya looked closer.

Standing near the kitchen entrance...

Michael Cole.

Beside him...

Victor Hale.

And another man.

The same man from the restaurant video.

The mechanic.

Aaron studied the picture carefully.

"He wasn't just a mechanic."

"What do you mean?"

"Look at his jacket."

The company logo remained visible despite the faded colors.

Cole Holdings – Executive Vehicle Division

Thomas's eyes widened.

"He worked for the company."

Not an outside contractor.

An insider.

A Name Written Behind the Photo

Maya turned the photograph over.

Handwritten words covered the back.

The ink had faded but remained readable.

If anything happens to me, trust Richard Cole. He doesn't know the truth yet.

The handwriting wasn't Maya's mother's.

Richard stared at it.

"I know this writing."

Everyone looked at him.

"It's Michael's."

Maya's hands trembled.

"Why would Mr. Michael write on my mother's photograph?"

Richard slowly pieced it together.

"Because your mother knew something."

Aaron nodded.

"And Michael trusted her."

Another Witness

Helen, the longtime housekeeper, called Richard while they were still inside Maya's apartment.

"Mr. Cole..."

"What is it?"

"Someone came to the mansion."

"Who?"

"A woman."

Richard frowned.

"Did she give her name?"

"She said..."

Helen hesitated.

"...she worked with Michael before he died."

Aaron stepped closer.

"What does she want?"

Helen answered quietly.

"She says she has Michael's laptop."

The room became perfectly still.

Michael's company laptop had never been recovered after the accident.

Richard had assumed it had burned inside the Mercedes.

If someone had it...

It could contain everything Michael had discovered.

The Empty Parking Space

As they hurried back toward Richard's car, Maya suddenly stopped walking.

She stared across the street.

Richard followed her gaze.

A black SUV sat parked beneath a row of leafless trees.

Its engine idled quietly.

The windows were completely tinted.

Aaron immediately reached for his badge.

The SUV slowly pulled away.

Too slowly.

Almost deliberately.

As though the driver wanted them to know...

They were still being watched.

Richard opened the passenger door for Maya.

Before she climbed inside, she looked once more toward the disappearing vehicle.

Something glinted briefly behind the windshield.

A silver bracelet.

With a small emerald charm.

The same bracelet they had seen in the recovered surveillance footage.

Someone connected to Daniel...

Had just been watching them.

And now they knew exactly where Maya was.
