Chapter 9 – The Hidden Accounts

Chapter 9 – The Hidden Accounts

The cursor hovered over the folder labeled OPEN LAST.

No one in Richard Cole's study spoke.

The only sound was the soft hum of Kevin Marshall's forensic workstation.

Richard took a slow breath.

"Open it."

Kevin clicked.

The folder contained only three files.

One spreadsheet.

One encrypted database.

One handwritten note scanned into PDF format.

Richard opened the note first.

Michael's familiar handwriting filled the screen.

Dad, if you've reached this folder, it means I'm probably gone. Don't trust appearances. The money is the motive—but it isn't the whole truth. Follow every account. Every transfer leads to the same people. If I couldn't stop them, maybe you still can.

Richard's throat tightened.

His son had expected to die.

Two Hundred Million Dollars

Thomas opened the spreadsheet.

Rows upon rows of transactions appeared.

Thousands of entries.

Payments.

Investments.

Wire transfers.

Offshore accounts.

The total amount highlighted in red at the bottom made everyone stare.

$218,476,903.84

Richard whispered,

"My God..."

Thomas adjusted his glasses.

"This wasn't ordinary embezzlement."

"This was systematic."

Michael had spent months tracing every dollar.

Each payment disappeared through layers of shell companies before resurfacing somewhere else.

Aaron Brooks frowned.

"Can we identify the final destination?"

Kevin nodded.

"I'll reconstruct the trail."

His fingers flew across the keyboard.

One by one, the hidden companies collapsed into a single ownership network.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

North Shore Consulting Group.

The same company that had received five million dollars after Michael's death.

The Dead Companies

Kevin continued digging.

"Look at this."

Every shell company had something in common.

They existed for less than a year.

No employees.

No physical offices.

No legitimate business activity.

Thomas nodded grimly.

"They only existed to move money."

Richard looked closer.

"Who registered them?"

Kevin froze.

"The same law firm."

"What firm?"

He enlarged the document.

Harrison & Blake Corporate Legal Services.

Aaron's eyes narrowed.

"I know that name."

Richard looked at him.

"They've represented organized crime investigations before."

Thomas slowly turned toward Richard.

"This isn't just corporate fraud anymore."

"It may be criminal conspiracy."

Michael's Map

Hidden inside the spreadsheet was another worksheet.

Michael had named it simply:

WHO PROFITS

A flowchart filled the screen.

Money moved from Cole Holdings into shell companies.

Then into offshore banks.

Finally...

Into personal accounts.

Five names appeared.

Daniel Cole.

Vanessa Cole.

Edward Harrison.

Victor Hale.

And one final name.

No photograph.

No address.

Only initials.

M.W.

Richard frowned.

"Who's M.W.?"

Nobody answered.

Grace Remembers

Grace Donovan suddenly stood.

"I've heard those initials."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Where?"

"Michael was arguing with someone over the phone."

She closed her eyes.

"He kept saying..."

"M.W. is protecting them."

Thomas immediately searched company records.

Thousands of employees.

Hundreds of executives.

No obvious match.

Kevin widened the search.

Government records.

Corporate registrations.

Political donors.

Then he stopped.

"I found one."

The screen displayed a photograph.

Margaret Whitmore.

Chairwoman of the State Financial Oversight Commission.

Aaron cursed quietly.

"If she's involved..."

Richard understood instantly.

"They had protection."

Every suspicious transaction.

Every missing document.

Every closed investigation.

Someone inside the government had been making sure no one asked questions.

The Forgotten Safe Deposit Box

Another document appeared.

Michael had scanned a bank receipt.

Richard looked closely.

Safe Deposit Box.

Lake Shore National Bank.

Box Number 417.

Rental renewed...

One week before Michael died.

Thomas frowned.

"The police never mentioned this."

Aaron shook his head.

"Because nobody knew it existed."

Richard looked at the receipt.

"Can anyone access it?"

Kevin enlarged the contract.

Only two authorized names appeared.

Michael Cole.

Richard Cole.

Richard blinked.

"He added me."

Grace smiled sadly.

"He wanted you to find it."

The Attempt to Erase Everything

Suddenly Kevin's computer screen flickered.

The spreadsheet disappeared.

A warning message appeared.

REMOTE CONNECTION DETECTED

Kevin's expression changed instantly.

"Someone's inside the laptop."

Aaron stepped forward.

"Can they delete everything?"

"They're trying."

The cursor began moving by itself.

Folders started disappearing.

Richard shouted,

"Stop them!"

Kevin disconnected the internet cable.

Too late.

Half the files vanished.

Thomas stared in disbelief.

"They're wiping the drive."

Kevin quickly removed the hard drive from the computer.

The screen went black.

Silence.

He looked at Richard.

"I saved most of it."

"But not everything."

Richard clenched his fists.

"They're watching us."

Aaron nodded.

"They knew the moment we opened the laptop."

A Visitor at the Gate

The security intercom buzzed.

"Mr. Cole?"

Richard answered immediately.

"Yes?"

"There's a woman here asking for you."

"Name?"

The guard hesitated.

"She says..."

"...she's Michael's fiancée."

The room froze.

Richard stared toward the speaker.

"That's impossible."

Michael had never been engaged.

Or so everyone believed.

Emily Carter

Five minutes later, a young woman entered the study.

She looked exhausted.

Travel-worn.

Her suitcase still stood beside her.

She carried a small leather folder against her chest.

"My name is Emily Carter."

Richard studied her.

"I've never met you."

"I know."

She looked at Michael's photograph.

"He wanted to introduce us after Christmas."

Silence settled over the room.

Richard asked quietly,

"You loved my son?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"Yes."

"We were going to be married."

She opened the leather folder.

Inside lay photographs.

Michael smiling.

Michael hiking.

Michael holding her hand.

Private moments.

Moments no one could fake.

Richard realized there had been an entire part of Michael's life...

His family had never known.

The Ring

Emily placed a velvet box on the table.

Inside rested a diamond engagement ring.

Richard recognized it instantly.

It had belonged to Michael's grandmother.

He had given it to Michael months before the accident.

"So he really..."

Emily nodded.

"He proposed."

Richard slowly closed the box.

"I'm sorry."

Emily wiped away a tear.

"He knew they were watching him."

Richard looked up.

"They?"

She nodded.

"The last week of his life..."

"He told me something."

Everyone leaned forward.

Emily repeated Michael's exact words.

"If anything happens to me, don't trust Daniel... and never let my father open the blue file alone."

Silence.

Thomas frowned.

"Blue file?"

Emily looked toward Michael's laptop.

"I think..."

"...it's still here."

Kevin searched the remaining folders.

Nothing.

Then he noticed a tiny blue icon hidden behind another file.

He clicked it.

The folder opened.

Inside was only one document.

Its title sent a chill through every person in the room.

People Who Must Never Know I'm Alive.

Richard's heart stopped.

Alive?

The room fell into stunned silence.

Had Michael written the title metaphorically...

Or had his son uncovered something far stranger than anyone had imagined?
