Chapter 6 – The Waitress Who Remembered Everything

Chapter 6 – The Waitress Who Remembered Everything
The photograph lay on Richard Cole's desk like a silent accusation.
Michael's crushed Mercedes rested at the bottom of the ravine, illuminated by the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.
High above the wreckage, almost hidden by the rain and darkness, stood a black Land Rover.
Detective Aaron Brooks tapped the corner of the image.
"We searched for the owner."
Richard looked up.
"And?"
"The records disappeared."
Thomas frowned.
"Disappeared?"
"The DMV database had been altered. By the time we obtained a warrant, the registration had already been reassigned."
Richard slowly lowered the photograph.
"Someone buried this."
Aaron nodded.
"I've believed that for three years."
A Memory Returns
Maya stared at the picture.
Something about the Land Rover bothered her.
Not the vehicle itself.
The license plate frame.
She had seen it before.
Suddenly, her eyes widened.
"Mr. Cole..."
Richard turned.
"What is it?"
"I remember that SUV."
Everyone looked at her.
"It came to Bellamy's Restaurant."
Thomas frowned.
"When?"
"The night before Michael died."
Richard stepped closer.
"Are you certain?"
"I think so."
She closed her eyes, forcing herself to remember.
"It was raining."
"There weren't many customers."
"A black Land Rover pulled into the private parking entrance."
She paused.
"I remember because one of the valets complained about how expensive the custom wheels looked."
Richard's pulse quickened.
"Who got out?"
Maya answered without hesitation.
"Mr. Daniel Cole."
The Private Booth
Daniel hadn't come alone.
Maya remembered escorting him to the restaurant's most secluded dining booth.
Another man had arrived ten minutes later.
The stranger wore a gray overcoat and kept his baseball cap low over his face.
"I couldn't see him clearly," Maya admitted.
"But I remember his hands."
Richard frowned.
"His hands?"
"They were covered in grease."
Aaron immediately looked interested.
"A mechanic?"
"Maybe."
"He carried a toolbox."
Silence filled the room.
Thomas slowly spoke.
"The brake line."
Everyone understood.
The Receipt
Maya searched her memory again.
"I served them coffee."
"Did you hear anything?" Richard asked.
"Only pieces."
"What pieces?"
She closed her eyes.
Daniel had been speaking quietly.
The mechanic sounded nervous.
Then Daniel slid a thick envelope across the table.
Maya remembered one sentence perfectly.
"After tomorrow, nobody will question it."
Richard felt his stomach tighten.
"What did the other man say?"
Maya hesitated.
"He asked..."
She swallowed.
"What if he survives?"
The study became deathly silent.
Richard looked toward Detective Brooks.
Aaron slowly nodded.
"That isn't the language of an accident."
The Forgotten Guest Log
The butler entered with a small leather ledger.
"Sir."
Richard looked up.
"What is that?"
"The guest log from Bellamy's."
Maya blinked.
"I forgot they kept handwritten records for private rooms."
Thomas opened the book.
Every VIP reservation had been recorded.
Names.
Arrival times.
Table numbers.
He turned to the correct date.
Table Twelve.
Reserved under:
D. Carter.
Richard frowned.
"That's not Daniel."
Aaron leaned closer.
"An alias."
Thomas nodded.
"But look at the signature."
Richard stared.
The handwriting was elegant.
Deliberate.
Almost identical to Daniel's.
Aaron smiled grimly.
"He wasn't as careful as he thought."
Michael's Surprise Visit
Maya's face suddenly lost color.
"Oh my God."
Richard looked at her.
"What?"
"I wasn't working only one shift that day."
"You weren't?"
"I came back at night."
She took a shaky breath.
"Michael came to the restaurant."
Richard's heart pounded.
"He saw Daniel?"
"I think he did."
"What happened?"
Maya remembered every detail now.
Michael entered through the side entrance.
He wasn't smiling.
He looked angry.
Almost desperate.
He walked straight toward Daniel's private booth.
The door closed.
Voices rose.
She hadn't meant to listen.
But she heard shouting.
One sentence had stayed with her all these years.
Michael yelled:
"You'd rather kill your own family than lose this company!"
Richard closed his eyes.
His son had known.
He had known far more than anyone realized.
A Broken Coffee Cup
Maya continued.
"The argument ended suddenly."
"Why?"
"I heard something break."
She remembered rushing toward the booth.
When she opened the door...
Michael was already leaving.
The mechanic was gone.
Daniel remained seated.
Calm.
He simply smiled.
Maya looked at the floor.
A shattered coffee cup.
Dark liquid everywhere.
Michael hadn't touched his coffee.
Instead...
He had thrown it.
The Security Tape
Detective Brooks looked at Maya.
"Did Bellamy's have cameras?"
"Yes."
Richard's eyes lit up.
"The footage."
Maya's expression fell.
"The restaurant upgraded its security system two years ago."
Aaron sighed.
"So the recordings are gone."
"Maybe not."
Everyone turned.
It was the restaurant manager, Mr. Collins, standing quietly in the doorway.
"I heard what happened tonight."
Richard frowned.
"You still have them?"
The manager nodded slowly.
"We archive every year's footage before replacing our servers."
Thomas looked stunned.
"You never erased it?"
"No."
"I stored everything off-site."
Richard stood immediately.
"I want those recordings."
The manager smiled.
"I brought them."
He lifted a small metal case.
Inside were dozens of labeled hard drives.
One carried a handwritten sticker.
November 18 – Private Dining.
The exact date Michael had confronted Daniel.
The Video
Kevin Marshall connected the drive to his laptop.
Everyone crowded around the screen.
The recording began.
Bellamy's private hallway.
Daniel entered.
Exactly as Maya remembered.
Ten minutes later, the mechanic arrived.
His face remained hidden beneath a cap.
Twenty-three minutes passed.
Then...
The side door burst open.
Michael entered.
He marched directly toward the private booth.
The timestamp read:
8:11 PM.
No audio.
Only video.
Michael disappeared inside.
Four minutes later...
The door flew open.
Michael stormed out.
His face was pale with rage.
He pointed back into the room, shouting words the camera couldn't hear.
Daniel never followed.
Instead...
He calmly picked up his phone.
Dialed someone.
Waited.
Then smiled.
Richard stared at the screen.
"Freeze it."
Kevin paused the video.
Daniel was holding the phone to his ear.
His lips were clearly visible.
Maya leaned closer.
"I can read lips."
Everyone looked at her.
"You can?"
"My mother is deaf."
"I learned when I was little."
Richard's voice became urgent.
"What did he say?"
Maya studied Daniel's mouth for several seconds.
Then she slowly repeated the words.
"He's on his way."
Silence.
She continued.
"Don't let him reach home."
Richard felt every ounce of blood drain from his face.
Detective Brooks whispered,
"My God..."
Thomas looked toward Richard.
"If that's accurate..."
Aaron finished the sentence.
"...Michael wasn't followed by chance."
"He was hunted."
A Knock at the Gate
Before anyone could react, the security chief rushed into the study.
"Mr. Cole!"
Richard turned sharply.
"What now?"
"We've detained someone outside the front gate."
"Who?"
The guard handed Richard a driver's license sealed inside an evidence bag.
Richard stared at the name.
Then his expression hardened.
The man waiting outside was Victor Hale.
Michael Cole's former personal mechanic.
The same mechanic who had inspected Michael's Mercedes...
Just two days before the fatal crash.
And according to company records...
He had disappeared the morning after Michael died.
Richard slowly looked toward Detective Brooks.
"I think we've just found the man who knows what really happened to my son."
