Chapter 1 – The Lady in Disguise

Chapter 1 – The Lady in Disguise
The echo of metal hitting the marble floor silenced the entire mansion.
The pair of scissors spun twice before stopping at the feet of the servants gathered in the hallway. No one dared to move. No one even breathed.
The woman in the gold dress stood frozen, her perfectly painted face drained of color. Only seconds ago, she had been screaming at the "maid" kneeling on the floor. Now she stared in horror as the wealthy man wrapped his expensive coat around the bleeding woman.
"My wife..."
The words still rang in her ears.
The elegant mansion suddenly felt colder than ice.
The man carefully lifted the pregnant woman into his arms, shielding her from every curious gaze.
"Emily," he whispered, his voice shaking. "Stay with me."
Emily forced a weak smile despite the pain burning through her side.
"I'm... I'm okay."
"No."
His jaw tightened.
"You are bleeding."
A crimson stain spread across the white fabric of her maid's uniform.
The sight made every servant look away.
The husband turned toward the woman in gold.
His eyes no longer carried the calm confidence of one of the city's most respected businessmen.
They were filled with fury.
"You did this."
The woman stumbled backward.
"Mr. Carter... I... I didn't know she was your wife."
"You called her a useless servant."
"I thought—"
"You threatened my unborn child."
"I swear it wasn't intentional!"
Emily suddenly winced.
A sharp pain shot through her abdomen.
She instinctively wrapped one hand around her belly.
The movement made Ethan Carter's heart stop.
"Call the doctor!" he shouted.
"No..."
A servant corrected herself immediately.
"Call an ambulance! Now!"
Within seconds the peaceful mansion descended into chaos.
Phones were pulled out.
Security guards rushed inside.
Housekeepers gathered towels to stop the bleeding.
Someone opened the front gate for emergency vehicles.
Meanwhile, the woman in the gold dress stood abandoned in the center of the hall.
For the first time in years...
No one listened to her.
No one defended her.
No one even looked at her.
She wasn't the most important guest anymore.
She was the woman who had attacked the lady of the house.
Minutes earlier...
Everything had seemed perfectly under control.
Victoria Langley adjusted the diamond necklace around her neck while admiring her reflection in the mansion's grand mirror.
She had spent nearly three hours preparing for tonight's dinner.
The partnership between Langley Cosmetics and Carter Holdings was supposed to be finalized this evening.
If everything went well...
Her family's company would double in value.
She had imagined champagne.
Celebration.
Photographs.
Perhaps even a future engagement.
After all...
Everyone in the business world knew Ethan Carter had never introduced another woman to his private residence.
Many believed Victoria was the closest anyone had ever come to becoming Mrs. Carter.
She certainly believed it herself.
Then she noticed the maid.
A young woman carrying tea with slow, careful steps.
Her uniform looked ordinary.
Hair tied back.
No jewelry.
No makeup.
But something irritated Victoria instantly.
The woman didn't bow.
She didn't avoid eye contact.
Instead, she simply smiled politely before continuing toward the living room.
Victoria's pride flared.
"Excuse me."
The maid stopped.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Who trained you?"
"I'm sorry?"
"You didn't greet me."
Emily blinked.
"I was delivering tea."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"So?"
"I meant no disrespect."
"You embarrassed me."
Emily remained calm.
"I apologize if it seemed that way."
The apology only made Victoria angrier.
She hated people who stayed calm while she lost her temper.
"You think because you're pretty you can ignore guests?"
"No."
"Then kneel."
The hallway fell silent.
Several servants exchanged nervous glances.
Emily looked confused.
"I'm sorry?"
"I said kneel."
One elderly butler quietly stepped forward.
"Miss Langley..."
Victoria shot him a glare.
"I wasn't talking to you."
The old man lowered his head.
He knew better than to argue.
Emily sighed softly.
"I don't think that's necessary."
Victoria laughed.
"There it is."
"There what is?"
"The attitude."
Without warning she slapped the tray from Emily's hands.
Porcelain shattered across the marble floor.
Tea splashed over Emily's shoes.
Gasps filled the hallway.
Victoria smiled.
"Now clean it."
Emily slowly knelt.
Not because she accepted humiliation.
Because broken glass surrounded her.
She didn't want anyone else getting hurt.
Victoria mistook the gesture for surrender.
She stepped closer.
"See?"
"I knew you'd learn."
Then she noticed something beneath the maid's loose uniform.
A rounded stomach.
Victoria frowned.
"You're pregnant?"
Emily nodded.
"Seven months."
Victoria rolled her eyes.
"Then you shouldn't be working."
"I enjoy helping around the house."
"Helping?"
Victoria laughed loudly.
"Pregnant maids become lazy."
Emily quietly continued picking up broken porcelain.
Victoria suddenly grabbed a pair of decorative scissors from a nearby flower arrangement.
The servants gasped again.
"Miss Langley..."
"Be quiet."
She pointed the scissors toward Emily.
"People like you need discipline."
Emily slowly stood.
"Please put those down."
"Afraid?"
"I'm worried someone could get hurt."
Victoria smiled cruelly.
"Exactly."
She shoved Emily.
Emily lost balance.
One heel slipped on spilled tea.
The scissors scraped across her side.
A thin line of blood appeared.
Emily gasped.
Her hands immediately covered her belly.
Victoria's confidence disappeared.
"I..."
Before she could finish—
A deep voice thundered through the mansion.
"What's going on?"
Everyone turned.
Ethan Carter had arrived.
Back in the present...
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Doctors immediately surrounded Emily.
"Blood pressure."
"Prepare ultrasound."
"Possible abdominal trauma."
Ethan climbed inside without hesitation.
The ambulance sped away with sirens piercing the evening air.
Standing outside the mansion, Victoria watched it disappear.
Her breathing became uneven.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
It had been a misunderstanding.
An accident.
Hadn't it?
A luxury black sedan suddenly stopped beside her.
Her assistant hurried out.
"Miss Langley!"
"What?"
"The board is asking where you are."
Victoria stared blankly.
"The partnership dinner..."
Her assistant swallowed nervously.
"I don't think there will be one."
Victoria's eyes widened.
"No..."
At that exact moment her phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"Dad?"
The voice on the other end was furious.
"What have you done?"
"Dad, listen—"
"Carter Holdings just canceled every ongoing negotiation."
Victoria felt the blood drain from her face.
"They can't."
"They already have."
"There must be some mistake."
"They also informed five of our investors."
"What?"
"They're reconsidering their relationship with us."
Victoria nearly dropped the phone.
"No..."
"You had one job."
"I can explain."
"I suggest you do."
The line went dead.
For the first time in years...
Victoria realized power could disappear in a single afternoon.
Across town...
Doctors rushed Emily into the emergency room.
Bright lights flashed overhead.
Medical staff spoke in rapid voices.
"Heart rate stable."
"Monitor fetal heartbeat."
"Prepare emergency imaging."
Ethan stood outside the operating room.
His expensive suit was stained with his wife's blood.
His hands trembled.
The memories refused to leave him.
Emily laughing while planting flowers.
Emily secretly baking cookies for the staff.
Emily insisting on wearing a maid's uniform because she wanted to observe how employees treated "ordinary people."
She had smiled that morning.
"If people only respect wealth," she had said, "then we'll never know who truly deserves to stay."
He had laughed.
He thought it was harmless.
Now...
She was behind emergency room doors.
Because someone mistook kindness for weakness.
An elderly doctor finally stepped outside.
Ethan rushed forward.
"How is she?"
"The wound is not life-threatening."
Ethan exhaled.
"But..."
His heart tightened again.
"The stress caused significant contractions."
"What does that mean?"
"We managed to stop premature labor."
"And the baby?"
The doctor looked at him carefully.
"For now..."
"...the baby is safe."
"For now?"
"We'll need to monitor Mrs. Carter closely for the next forty-eight hours."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Can I see her?"
"Only for a few minutes."
Emily lay quietly in the hospital bed.
Machines beeped softly beside her.
She smiled when Ethan entered.
"You look terrible."
He laughed bitterly.
"You scared me."
"I'm sorry."
He sat beside her and gently held her hand.
"You have nothing to apologize for."
"I should have told everyone who I was."
"No."
"You warned me this might happen."
"I thought people would be kinder."
"They should have been."
Emily looked toward the window.
"I wasn't testing the staff."
Ethan frowned.
"I was testing our guests."
"What do you mean?"
She smiled sadly.
"Money reveals character."
"So does the way people treat those they believe are beneath them."
Ethan lowered his head.
"I failed to protect you."
Emily squeezed his hand.
"No."
"You trusted people."
"There is a difference."
Before Ethan could answer...
His phone vibrated.
Security Director:
Sir... we've identified several cameras that recorded the entire incident.
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Good."
Emily looked at him.
"What are you thinking?"
His expression became cold.
"The truth."
"And once the truth comes out..."
He looked toward the hospital door.
"...everyone responsible will face the consequences."
Meanwhile...
Victoria sat alone inside her penthouse apartment.
The television was muted.
The city lights glittered beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Her untouched wine glass rested on the table.
She replayed every moment inside the mansion.
The maid.
The scissors.
The blood.
His voice.
"She is the lady of this house."
She buried her face in her hands.
Her phone vibrated again.
A message from an unknown number.
You made a costly mistake today.
But mistakes can become opportunities... if you're willing to fight back.
Call me.
I can help you destroy the Carters.
Victoria stared at the message for a long moment.
She should have deleted it.
She should have apologized.
She should have accepted responsibility.
Instead...
Her thumb slowly moved to the call button.
The line connected after the first ring.
A calm male voice answered.
"I was wondering how long it would take."
Victoria swallowed hard.
"Who are you?"
The man chuckled softly.
"A friend."
"A friend with the same enemy."
Victoria glanced toward the dark skyline.
"What do you want?"
His answer came without hesitation.
"I want everything Ethan Carter has."
A chilling silence filled the room.
Then the stranger added one final sentence—
"And after what happened tonight..."
May you like
"...I think you do too."
