Chapter 2 – Hidden Truths

Chapter 2 – Hidden Truths

The first thing Emily heard was the steady rhythm of a heartbeat.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

It wasn't the monitor beside her bed.

It was the tiny heartbeat echoing from the ultrasound machine.

The doctor smiled as she adjusted the screen.

"Your baby is stronger than we expected."

Emily finally released the breath she had been holding since the attack.

"What about the contractions?"

"They've stopped for now."

"For now?"

The doctor nodded.

"Stress is dangerous during pregnancy. You need complete rest."

Emily looked down at the grainy image of her unborn child.

A pair of tiny hands.

A tiny heartbeat.

A tiny life that had almost been taken away because of someone's arrogance.

She gently touched her stomach.

"I promise," she whispered.

"I'm going to protect you."

Outside the room, Ethan watched through the glass window.

Only after hearing the doctor's words did the tightness in his chest begin to ease.

But relief quickly gave way to anger.

His phone vibrated.

Security Director:
"We've finished collecting every camera recording from the mansion."

"There's something else you need to see."

An hour later...

The security room inside Carter Manor was unusually quiet.

Eight large monitors displayed footage from every corner of the estate.

The head of security paused the video.

"There."

The screen showed Emily carrying a silver tea tray.

Another angle captured Victoria entering the hallway.

Then...

Everything unfolded exactly as Ethan remembered.

Victoria demanded that Emily kneel.

She knocked the tray from Emily's hands.

She insulted her.

Threatened her.

Finally...

She grabbed the scissors.

There wasn't a single moment where Emily provoked her.

Not one.

Ethan's expression darkened.

"Play the footage before that."

The technician rewound the recording.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Fifteen.

Emily could be seen helping an elderly gardener carry flower pots.

She laughed with one of the kitchen maids.

She stopped to comfort a crying young housekeeper who had accidentally broken a vase.

The staff smiled whenever she passed.

One maid quietly wiped away tears after Emily hugged her.

The security director spoke.

"Sir..."

"We've reviewed three weeks of footage."

"And?"

"Mrs. Carter has been working alongside the staff every day."

"I know."

"But..."

He hesitated.

"Everyone believed she was just another employee."

Ethan remained silent.

The director continued.

"We've never seen anyone treat the staff the way she does."

He pressed another recording.

Emily was cooking dinner beside the chefs.

Another clip showed her polishing silverware with junior servants.

Another showed her carrying groceries into the kitchen despite being seven months pregnant.

She never ordered.

She never demanded.

She simply helped.

The director smiled faintly.

"The staff adore her."

"They would follow her anywhere."

Ethan looked at the screen.

His wife had grown up surrounded by wealth.

Yet she had never forgotten kindness.

That was exactly why he fell in love with her.

Three years earlier...

Emily Dawson had inherited nearly half a billion dollars after selling her late father's technology company.

She could have lived anywhere.

Driven any car.

Owned every luxury imaginable.

Instead...

She donated most of her inheritance.

Hospitals.

Schools.

Scholarships.

Children's shelters.

When Ethan first met her at a charity gala, she was wearing a simple navy-blue dress that cost less than most guests' shoes.

He hadn't recognized her.

Neither had anyone else.

She spent the entire evening serving food to volunteers instead of sitting at the VIP table.

Only after the event ended did Ethan discover she had personally funded the entire hospital wing being inaugurated that night.

When he asked why she never mentioned it...

She smiled.

"If people know you're rich..."

"They often stop showing you who they really are."

That sentence had stayed with him ever since.

Present day...

Emily slowly walked through the hospital hallway later that afternoon.

The doctors insisted she stretch her legs for a few minutes.

A nurse followed close behind.

"Mrs. Carter, please don't walk too fast."

Emily laughed softly.

"I won't."

As they turned the corner...

A little boy bumped into her wheelchair.

"I'm sorry!"

He couldn't have been older than six.

His stuffed bear fell onto the floor.

Emily picked it up.

"There you go."

The little boy smiled.

"Thank you."

His mother hurried over.

"I'm so sorry."

"It's alright."

The woman froze.

She noticed the hospital bracelet.

Then the security guards nearby.

"You..."

Emily smiled.

"I'm just another patient."

The woman looked embarrassed.

"My son is waiting for heart surgery."

Emily knelt slightly despite the nurse's protest.

"What is your name?"

"Lucas."

"Were you brave today?"

He nodded proudly.

"I didn't cry."

Emily reached into her pocket.

She always carried small origami stars.

She handed him one.

"This is a lucky star."

Lucas's eyes sparkled.

"Really?"

"It reminds people to stay hopeful."

The boy hugged her unexpectedly.

His mother burst into tears.

"Thank you..."

Emily simply smiled.

Neither of them knew...

The Carter Foundation had quietly paid for Lucas's surgery two days earlier.

Emily preferred it that way.

Kindness didn't need applause.

Meanwhile...

Victoria sat inside her father's office.

The atmosphere was suffocating.

Richard Langley slammed a newspaper onto the desk.

"What were you thinking?"

Victoria remained silent.

"You attacked someone's wife!"

"I didn't know who she was."

"You shouldn't attack anyone!"

He rarely shouted.

Today...

His voice echoed throughout the building.

"Our stock dropped six percent this morning."

Victoria looked up.

"Six?"

"Investors are nervous."

"They'll calm down."

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"They're afraid Ethan Carter is going to destroy us."

Victoria clenched her fists.

"He wouldn't."

"You don't know him."

"I do."

"You know the businessman."

Richard leaned closer.

"I know the husband."

"He protects his family."

"And when someone threatens that family..."

"He never forgives."

Victoria's confidence finally cracked.

"What do I do?"

Richard sighed.

"You apologize."

She looked away.

"I already tried calling."

"He won't answer."

"Then go to him."

"He won't see me."

Richard rubbed his temples.

"If pride got us into this..."

"...humility might be the only thing that gets us out."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

For the first time...

She wondered if she had truly gone too far.

Across the city...

Someone else was watching.

A man sat in a dark office overlooking the skyline.

Several computer monitors displayed Carter Holdings.

Financial reports.

Property maps.

News articles.

Security schedules.

The mysterious caller from the previous night smiled as another message appeared.

Victoria Langley has entered the Langley headquarters.

He leaned back.

"Perfect."

His assistant entered.

"Sir."

"Has she accepted?"

"Not yet."

"She will."

"And if she doesn't?"

The man chuckled.

"She has already lost everything."

"People with nothing left become predictable."

He stood before the window.

"Ethan..."

"You've been untouchable for too long."

His reflection smiled.

"But every empire..."

"...has cracks."

That evening...

Ethan finally returned home.

The mansion was strangely quiet.

Servants moved carefully, afraid of disturbing him.

Mrs. Eleanor Brooks, the elderly housekeeper, approached.

"Sir."

"How is everyone?"

"They're worried about Mrs. Carter."

"So am I."

She hesitated.

"There is something else."

"What is it?"

She handed him a folded envelope.

"We found this under Mrs. Carter's bedroom door."

There was no stamp.

No address.

Only one sentence written in black ink.

You trust the wrong people.

Ethan frowned.

"Who delivered this?"

"No one saw."

He immediately called security.

"Check every camera."

"We already did."

"And?"

"There are twelve seconds..."

"...where every hallway camera went offline."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Twelve seconds?"

"Yes, sir."

"Someone hacked the system."

Silence filled the room.

The Carter mansion used military-grade surveillance.

Almost impossible to breach.

Almost.

Someone capable of disabling it for exactly twelve seconds wasn't an amateur.

They had planned this.

The attack on Emily...

The anonymous message...

The hacked cameras...

None of it felt random anymore.

Later that night...

Emily couldn't sleep.

Moonlight streamed through the hospital window.

She replayed the day in her mind.

Victoria's hatred.

The scissors.

Ethan's terrified expression.

She gently rubbed her stomach.

The baby kicked.

Emily smiled.

"You're awake too?"

Another kick.

She laughed quietly.

"I know."

"We're going home soon."

Suddenly...

A faint sound came from outside her room.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Not a nurse.

Not a doctor.

The footsteps stopped outside her door.

Emily looked toward the frosted glass.

A shadow stood motionless.

Then...

The doorknob slowly began to turn.

Emily's smile vanished.

The door opened just enough for a gloved hand to slip inside.

An envelope slid across the floor.

The shadow disappeared without a sound.

Seconds later, Ethan entered carrying fresh flowers.

Emily pointed at the envelope.

"It wasn't there a moment ago."

He picked it up carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Emily wearing her maid's uniform...

Standing beside one of the mansion's servants.

On the back, written in red ink, were five chilling words:

She isn't who she seems.

Ethan stared at the message, then at the photograph.

The servant beside Emily smiled innocently in the picture.

But now...

For the first time...

May you like

Ethan wondered whether someone inside his own home had been watching his wife all along.
