Chapter 11 – The Last Deal

Chapter 11 – The Last Deal

The black SUV tore through the city, its tires screaming against the rain-soaked streets.

Ethan gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Behind him, three more security vehicles followed in formation.

Emily sat in the passenger seat despite the doctor's orders to remain at home.

"No one is keeping me away from my daughter," she said firmly.

Ethan glanced at her.

"You should be recovering."

Emily met his eyes.

"I'll recover faster if she's safe."

Neither of them spoke again.

The only sound inside the vehicle was the wail of the sirens cutting through the night.

Saint Gabriel Hospital

The neonatal intensive care unit was in chaos.

Nurses hurried from room to room.

Security officers sealed every entrance.

Parents clutched their babies, frightened by the sudden lockdown.

Detective Marcus Hill was already waiting when Ethan arrived.

"We got your message."

"What happened?"

Marcus pointed toward the surveillance monitors.

"Ten minutes ago, someone triggered a fire alarm on the third floor."

"During the evacuation..."

"...a woman disguised as a nurse tried to enter the NICU."

Emily's heart pounded.

"Our daughter?"

Marcus nodded.

"She's safe."

"The staff recognized the fake identification before she reached the incubator."

Emily closed her eyes in relief.

For a moment, her knees nearly gave way.

Ethan caught her before she could fall.

"We're okay," he whispered.

"We're still together."

A Familiar Face

The fake nurse sat handcuffed inside an interrogation room.

She kept her head lowered.

Her uniform had been confiscated.

Marcus entered first.

Then Ethan.

The woman slowly looked up.

Emily gasped.

It was the same woman who had attacked Daniel with the syringe days earlier.

Marcus placed a photograph on the table.

"Who hired you?"

Silence.

Ethan placed another photograph beside it.

Damien Black.

Again...

Silence.

Marcus sighed.

"You've already been abandoned."

The woman's lips trembled.

"He promised..."

"He promised my son would get medical treatment."

Emily looked at her carefully.

"Your son is sick?"

The woman nodded as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"He has leukemia."

"Damien offered to pay."

"In return..."

"...I only had to follow orders."

Emily quietly sat across from her.

"What's your son's name?"

The woman looked surprised.

"Oliver."

Emily smiled sadly.

"How old is he?"

"Eight."

Silence filled the room.

The woman finally broke.

"I never wanted to hurt your baby."

"I couldn't lose mine."

She buried her face in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably.

Marcus looked toward Ethan.

"This could help us."

Ethan nodded.

Then he looked at the woman.

"If you testify..."

"I'll make sure your son receives the treatment he needs."

The woman stared at him.

"Why?"

"After everything?"

Ethan answered without hesitation.

"Because my wife reminded me..."

"...that children should never pay for the sins of adults."

Damien's Empire Begins to Crack

Across the city...

Damien entered the top floor of Orion Trust Headquarters.

The board of directors was already waiting.

For years they had quietly financed his operations.

Tonight...

Their expressions were different.

The chairman spoke first.

"The ballroom incident changed everything."

Damien remained calm.

"We lost one battle."

"We're discussing the war."

Another director slid several newspapers across the table.

Every headline praised Ethan and Emily.

"Truth Exposes Corporate Conspiracy."

"Heroic Couple Stops National Smear Campaign."

"Authorities Expand Investigation Into Orion Trust."

The chairman folded his hands.

"Our investors are nervous."

"They'll recover."

"No."

The chairman shook his head.

"They're withdrawing."

One by one...

Letters were placed before Damien.

Investment withdrawals.

Frozen accounts.

Canceled partnerships.

For the first time in decades...

Even his own allies were backing away.

One director finally spoke the words Damien never expected to hear.

"We're terminating our relationship."

Silence.

Damien looked around the room.

"So..."

"This is loyalty."

The chairman answered quietly.

"This is survival."

The Last Offer

As Damien walked toward the elevator, his phone rang.

It was Ethan.

Damien smiled.

"I wondered when you'd call."

"I want to make a deal."

The smile faded slightly.

"I'm listening."

"You surrender."

"You testify."

"You tell the authorities everything."

Damien laughed.

"You call that a deal?"

"I call it your last chance."

Damien stepped into the empty elevator.

"What do I receive?"

Ethan answered calmly.

"The truth."

"The truth?"

"You've spent twenty-three years chasing revenge."

"But revenge hasn't given you peace."

"It has only left you alone."

For several seconds...

Damien said nothing.

The elevator descended slowly.

Finally he spoke.

"You know nothing about me."

"I know enough."

"You lost your family."

"You blamed mine."

"And somewhere along the way..."

"...you forgot who the real enemy was."

The elevator doors opened.

Damien stepped into the underground parking garage.

Rain echoed outside.

He looked at the empty rows of luxury cars.

Then he quietly replied,

"If I tell you the truth..."

"...you'll wish I had stayed dead."

The call ended.

Emily's Promise

That evening...

Emily finally held her daughter for the first time.

The baby had grown slightly stronger.

Still tiny.

Still fragile.

But alive.

Emily carefully rocked her in her arms.

The little girl opened her eyes and stared at her mother.

"Hello, sweetheart."

Ethan stood beside them.

"What should we name her?"

Emily smiled.

"I've been thinking."

She looked down at the sleeping infant.

"Hope."

Ethan laughed softly.

"Hope Carter."

"It suits her."

Emily kissed the baby's forehead.

"Because no matter how dark things become..."

"...she reminds us there's always something worth fighting for."

A Desperate Escape

Meanwhile...

Federal investigators entered Orion Trust Headquarters with search warrants.

Employees rushed through the halls carrying boxes.

Computers were seized.

Hard drives collected.

Officers spread through every floor.

Marcus arrived just as the building manager approached him.

"You're too late."

Marcus frowned.

"For what?"

The manager pointed toward the underground garage.

"Mr. Black left five minutes ago."

Marcus immediately radioed nearby units.

"Block every highway."

"No one leaves the city."

Within seconds...

Police vehicles flooded the streets.

Helicopters lifted into the night sky.

The hunt had begun.

The Final Piece

Back at Carter Manor...

Victoria carefully organized the copied files from Damien's vault.

Most were financial records.

Bribery payments.

Blackmail evidence.

Then she found one encrypted folder that had somehow escaped everyone's attention.

Its label was simple.

The Last Deal

She opened it.

A single scanned contract appeared.

Signed twenty-three years earlier.

One signature belonged to Damien Black.

The other...

Made Victoria's blood run cold.

It belonged to Ethan's late grandfather.

She whispered,

"No..."

Mrs. Brooks looked over her shoulder.

"What is it?"

Victoria pointed to the final paragraph.

The agreement read:

In exchange for protecting the children,
Damien Black agrees to disappear permanently.
If he ever returns, this agreement becomes void.

Attached to the contract was one handwritten sentence.

Not from Damien.

From Ethan's grandfather.

"One day Ethan must know the truth...
...even if he hates me for it."

Victoria's heart pounded.

Everything they believed about the past...

Was incomplete.

Perhaps...

Damien hadn't started this war alone.

At that exact moment, Ethan received another call.

This time, it wasn't from Damien.

It was Marcus.

His voice was urgent.

"We found Damien's car."

Ethan stood.

"Where is he?"

Marcus took a deep breath.

"The car was abandoned..."

May you like

"...at your grandfather's old estate."
