Chapter 3 – The Perfect Trap

Chapter 3 – The Perfect Trap

The hospital room fell into a heavy silence.

Ethan turned the photograph over once more, hoping he had missed something. But the message remained the same.

She isn't who she seems.

Emily frowned.

"That's ridiculous."

Ethan looked at the smiling servant beside her in the picture.

"No..."

"This message isn't about you."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"You think it's about the person standing next to me."

Ethan nodded.

"Someone wants us to suspect each other."

"Or..."

Emily finished his thought.

"They want us to suspect the wrong person."

He slipped the photograph into a clear evidence bag.

"No more chances."

"I'm treating this like a criminal investigation."

The Morning After

By sunrise, Carter Manor was surrounded by reporters.

Black SUVs lined the entrance.

Camera flashes lit up the gates.

No one knew exactly what had happened inside the mansion, but rumors had already begun spreading across social media.

"A wealthy businessman's wife attacked by a guest."

"Pregnant woman rushed to the hospital."

"Partnership between Carter Holdings and Langley Cosmetics collapses overnight."

Speculation spread faster than facts.

Inside the mansion, however, Ethan had no interest in public opinion.

He gathered every employee in the grand ballroom.

More than sixty people stood in complete silence.

Chefs.

Gardeners.

Drivers.

Housekeepers.

Security guards.

No one dared to speak.

Ethan stepped onto the small stage.

"I know many of you are frightened."

His voice was calm but firm.

"What happened yesterday should never have happened."

He paused, looking across every face.

"My wife chose to work alongside you because she believed character matters more than titles."

Several servants lowered their heads.

Tears filled Mrs. Brooks' eyes.

Ethan continued.

"She never wanted anyone punished for treating her like a maid."

A few people looked relieved.

"But..."

His tone turned cold.

"If anyone inside this house is secretly helping those who wish to harm my family..."

"...leave now."

Silence.

No one moved.

No one even blinked.

Ethan waited another ten seconds.

Still nothing.

"Very well."

He nodded toward the security team.

"Lock every electronic device."

Immediately, guards walked through the room collecting mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.

Confused whispers filled the ballroom.

A young gardener raised his hand.

"Sir... have we done something wrong?"

"No."

"I'm protecting everyone."

Across the City

Victoria Langley had not slept.

Dark circles framed her eyes.

Every news channel mentioned Carter Holdings.

Every business analyst predicted disaster for her family's company.

Her assistant hurried into the office.

"Miss Langley."

"What now?"

"We've found someone."

Victoria looked up.

"Someone?"

"A public relations consultant."

"He says he can repair your reputation."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"My reputation?"

"I nearly killed a pregnant woman."

"No consultant can fix that."

"He insists he can."

Before Victoria could refuse, the office door opened.

A tall man in a charcoal suit entered without asking permission.

His smile was flawless.

Almost rehearsed.

"My name is Adrian Cross."

He extended his hand.

"I'm here to save your future."

Victoria ignored the handshake.

"I don't need saving."

Adrian smiled wider.

"I think you do."

He placed a folder on the desk.

Inside were dozens of printed photographs.

Hospital entrances.

Security guards.

Emily.

Ethan.

Even Carter Manor.

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Where did you get these?"

"I have resources."

"You've been spying on them?"

"I've been studying them."

He leaned forward.

"And I've discovered something useful."

Victoria hesitated.

"What?"

Adrian slid another photograph toward her.

It showed Emily laughing with a male servant in the mansion's garden.

Taken from a distance.

At just the right angle.

It looked...

Intimate.

Victoria frowned.

"What am I supposed to see?"

"Nothing."

"What?"

"Exactly."

He tapped the photograph.

"Reality doesn't matter."

"Perception does."

Victoria slowly understood.

"You want to make it look like she's having an affair."

Adrian smiled.

"Now you're thinking."

Victoria immediately shook her head.

"No."

"That's insane."

"No one would believe it."

"They don't need to believe."

"They only need to doubt."

Carter Manor

Meanwhile, Ethan's security team had begun examining every employee's phone.

Most contained ordinary conversations.

Family photos.

Recipes.

Shopping lists.

Nothing suspicious.

Then...

One phone caught their attention.

A kitchen assistant named Daniel.

His recent messages had all been deleted.

Every single one.

The security director frowned.

"Recover them."

Within minutes, the deleted files reappeared.

One message stood out.

Unknown Number:

"Keep reporting Emily's movements."

Another.

"You'll receive the remaining payment after tonight."

The room became silent.

Daniel was immediately escorted into the study.

He looked terrified.

"I didn't do anything!"

Ethan placed the printed messages on the table.

"Then explain these."

Daniel's face turned pale.

"I..."

"You've been reporting my wife's movements."

"No..."

"I..."

His hands began shaking.

"They threatened my daughter."

The room froze.

Ethan studied him carefully.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel burst into tears.

"They know where she goes to school."

"They sent pictures."

"They said if I didn't tell them where Mrs. Carter was..."

"...my little girl would disappear."

The security director exchanged a glance with Ethan.

Daniel wasn't lying.

His fear was real.

Ethan leaned back.

"Did you ever meet the person giving orders?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Never."

"Only messages."

"And cash left inside lockers."

"So..."

Ethan murmured.

"Someone is using frightened people."

Not loyal ones.

Desperate ones.

The Viral Video

At exactly 2:15 PM...

Every major social media platform exploded.

A thirty-second video appeared online.

It showed Emily laughing with the same male servant from Adrian's photograph.

Then...

Another clip.

Emily placing her hand on the servant's shoulder.

Another.

The servant hugging her.

Finally...

A freeze frame.

Emily smiling directly at him.

The caption read:

"Billionaire's Pregnant Wife Secret Romance With Household Staff?"

Within twenty minutes...

The video had over two million views.

Comments flooded in.

"Poor Ethan Carter."

"She's using him for money."

"No wonder she dressed like a maid."

"Disgusting."

Television channels immediately picked up the story.

Entertainment blogs declared it the biggest scandal of the year.

Not one of them questioned the authenticity of the footage.

The Hospital

Emily's phone wouldn't stop vibrating.

Messages.

News alerts.

Calls from friends.

She frowned.

"What happened?"

Ethan walked into the room holding a tablet.

His expression was unreadable.

"You need to see this."

Emily watched the edited video.

By the end...

She laughed.

The nurse blinked.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"Aren't you upset?"

Emily shook her head.

"They edited it."

Ethan looked at her.

"You recognize the footage?"

She smiled.

"Of course."

She pointed at the first clip.

"Daniel had just told me his daughter won a school art contest."

The second clip.

"He was crying because his wife had cancer."

The third.

"I hugged him because the surgery was successful."

She looked at Ethan.

"They removed everything before and after."

He nodded.

"I know."

"But the internet doesn't."

Emily sighed softly.

"So..."

"This is the trap."

"They're trying to make us fight each other."

Ethan took her hand.

"They underestimated us."

She smiled.

"We trust each other."

"They can't fake that."

Somewhere Else...

Adrian watched the internet explode.

His assistant smiled.

"The plan worked."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

"Not yet."

"They haven't turned against each other."

"They will."

"Eventually."

His phone rang.

Victoria.

He answered immediately.

"This has gone too far."

Her voice trembled.

"I never agreed to destroy an innocent woman."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"You've already crossed the line."

"I can still stop."

"No."

His voice became icy.

"You stopped having that choice the moment you picked up my call."

Victoria's heart pounded.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian calmly replied,

"You think yesterday's attack ruined your life."

"It didn't."

"I did."

Silence.

Then—

"The scissors..."

"The anonymous messages..."

"The leaked footage..."

"It was all planned."

Victoria's blood ran cold.

"You..."

"You used me."

Adrian chuckled.

"You were simply the first piece."

"And pieces..."

"...are meant to be sacrificed."

The line went dead.

Victoria stood frozen.

For the first time...

She realized she wasn't the mastermind.

She was merely a pawn.

Carter Manor – That Evening

The security director entered Ethan's office carrying a laptop.

"We've completed the forensic analysis."

"And?"

"The viral video."

He pressed Play.

The original footage appeared beside the edited version.

Frame by frame.

Every hug.

Every smile.

Every conversation.

Each had been carefully cut and rearranged.

Then the technician enlarged one corner of the screen.

A reflection in the mansion's window.

Someone had been filming from outside.

A man wearing black gloves.

His face hidden beneath a cap.

But one detail stood out.

A silver ring on his right hand.

The security director zoomed in.

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"I've seen that ring before."

"Where?"

He couldn't remember.

Not yet.

But somewhere...

Someone close to him wore that exact ring.

Before he could think further, another call came through.

The director answered.

His face turned white.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"The police are here."

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

The director swallowed hard.

"They have an arrest warrant..."

May you like

"...for Mrs. Emily Carter."
