Chapter 9 – Revenge Begins

Chapter 9 – Revenge Begins
Mrs. Brooks stared at the security monitor in disbelief.
The woman in the footage looked exactly like her.
The same silver-gray hair.
The same posture.
The same cardigan she wore almost every day.
For several long seconds, no one spoke.
Finally, Mrs. Brooks whispered,
"That... isn't me."
The security director frowned.
"The facial recognition software shows a ninety-eight percent match."
Emily slowly stood.
"No."
Everyone turned toward her.
Emily walked closer to the screen, studying every frame.
"Pause it."
The director froze the image.
Emily pointed to the woman's left hand.
"Mrs. Brooks is left-handed."
The woman in the footage opened the gate with her right hand.
Mrs. Brooks blinked.
"I've been left-handed since I was a child."
Emily nodded.
"And look at the wedding ring."
The room leaned in.
Mrs. Brooks always wore her wedding band on her right hand after developing severe arthritis years earlier.
The woman in the footage wore hers on the left.
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
"It's a disguise."
Emily smiled faintly.
"Exactly."
"Someone wanted us to accuse the one person who's protected this family for decades."
Mrs. Brooks covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.
"Thank you..."
Emily squeezed her hand.
"We don't turn against family because of one video."
"We learn from our mistakes."
A New Strategy
Later that evening, Ethan gathered his closest allies in the study.
Only five people remained.
Emily.
Mrs. Brooks.
Daniel.
The security director.
Detective Marcus Hill.
Marcus spread several photographs across the table.
"We've identified three separate attacks."
"The scissors."
"The edited video."
"The fake nurse."
"They all share one thing."
"The same funding source."
He slid a bank statement toward Ethan.
An offshore account.
Opened twenty-four years earlier.
Account holder:
Orion Trust.
Marcus continued,
"The account has transferred millions over the years."
"To politicians."
"Law firms."
"Corporate spies."
"And..."
He paused.
"Members of your own board."
Ethan looked up.
"How many?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"More than half."
The betrayal ran deeper than anyone imagined.
Victoria's Return
The front gate of Carter Manor slowly opened.
A black sedan rolled inside.
Victoria stepped out.
She looked exhausted.
The bruises on her face had begun to fade, but her eyes carried a different kind of pain.
She wasn't the arrogant woman in the gold dress anymore.
She looked like someone who had finally seen the cost of pride.
Daniel greeted her at the entrance.
"You made it."
She smiled weakly.
"Barely."
Inside the mansion, Ethan waited in the library.
Victoria stopped a few feet away.
"I brought everything."
She placed a thick folder on the desk.
Emails.
Contracts.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Names.
"I copied Damien's files before I escaped."
Marcus immediately began reviewing the documents.
Within minutes, his expression changed.
"This..."
He looked at Ethan.
"This is enough to destroy half the conspiracy."
Victoria lowered her head.
"I helped create this mess."
"Now let me help end it."
Ethan studied her for a long moment.
Finally, he nodded.
"Then welcome to our side."
Victoria closed her eyes.
It was the first time anyone had offered her trust since the attack.
She silently promised herself she would never betray it again.
Damien Makes His Move
Inside the abandoned winery, Damien received a phone call.
"They have Victoria."
"I know."
"They have the files."
"I know."
The assistant hesitated.
"Aren't you worried?"
Damien smiled.
"Not at all."
He walked toward a wall covered with photographs.
Every member of the Carter family.
Every board member.
Every servant.
Every employee.
One photograph remained untouched.
Emily.
Damien gently removed it from the wall.
"You've become the center of everything."
He stared at her smiling face.
"So let's see..."
"...how much your kindness is really worth."
He picked up another phone.
"Activate the media."
Public Opinion Turns
The following morning, every major television network interrupted its programming.
A famous celebrity lawyer stood before dozens of microphones.
Behind him were several women wearing sunglasses.
One after another, they stepped forward.
"We worked for Carter Holdings."
"We were threatened."
"We were mistreated."
"The company hid illegal activities."
The accusations spread across every platform within minutes.
None of the women provided evidence.
None of them answered questions.
But that didn't matter.
The headlines were already written.
"More Victims Speak Out Against Carter Holdings."
The company's stock fell again.
Employees panicked.
Customers canceled contracts.
Outside headquarters, protesters gathered carrying signs demanding justice.
Inside the building, several remaining executives packed their belongings.
The company Ethan had spent years building was collapsing in real time.
Emily's Idea
That afternoon, everyone sat in silence.
No one knew what to do next.
Every time they disproved one lie...
Damien created another.
Emily quietly poured tea for everyone.
Then she smiled.
"I think we're fighting the wrong battle."
Marcus looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
"We keep defending ourselves."
"And?"
Emily placed the teapot down.
"What if we stop defending..."
"...and start exposing?"
The room became quiet.
Ethan looked at her.
"You have a plan."
She nodded.
"They expect us to react."
"They don't expect us to attack."
Victoria slowly smiled.
"I know where Damien keeps backup files."
Marcus looked up.
"Can we get them?"
Victoria nodded.
"Not without help."
Daniel leaned forward.
"I'll go."
"No."
Everyone turned toward Emily.
She looked directly at Victoria.
"You and I."
Victoria blinked.
"What?"
"He'll expect Daniel."
"He'll expect Ethan."
"He'll never expect the two women he underestimated."
Ethan immediately shook his head.
"Absolutely not."
Emily smiled gently.
"You once told me courage isn't the absence of fear."
"It's doing what's right despite it."
He sighed.
"I regret teaching you that."
She laughed softly.
"So do I."
The Hidden Vault
Late that night...
A luxury hotel hosted a charity gala.
Damien Black attended under a false identity.
Victoria had memorized the layout weeks earlier.
Beneath the hotel's wine cellar was a private vault.
Inside were encrypted hard drives containing years of blackmail material.
Emily and Victoria entered through the catering entrance wearing staff uniforms.
History seemed to repeat itself.
Once again...
Emily was dressed like a servant.
But this time, she wasn't hiding.
She was hunting.
Victoria whispered,
"The security office is downstairs."
Emily nodded.
"I'll distract them."
"You?"
Emily smiled.
"I'm surprisingly good at being overlooked."
Victoria almost laughed.
"If only I had realized that sooner."
The First Strike
While security guards chased a false alarm triggered by Emily, Victoria slipped into the private vault.
She inserted a copied access card.
The heavy steel door unlocked.
Inside were rows of encrypted servers.
She quickly found the labeled drives.
Project Heir
Board Assets
Media Control
Carter Family
She copied everything onto a portable drive.
Just as the progress bar reached one hundred percent—
The lights went out.
A familiar voice echoed through the darkness.
"I wondered when you'd arrive."
Victoria froze.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Damien Black stepped from the shadows.
Slowly clapping.
"Very impressive."
Emily appeared beside Victoria, refusing to run.
Damien smiled at both women.
"I underestimated you."
Emily met his gaze without fear.
"No."
"You underestimated the people who stand together."
Damien chuckled.
"We'll see."
He pressed a small remote hidden in his pocket.
Sirens erupted throughout the hotel.
Metal security shutters slammed down over every exit.
The vault doors locked automatically.
Victoria's face turned pale.
"We're trapped."
Damien's smile widened.
"Exactly where I wanted you."
Then he held up another flash drive.
"This one contains the real secret."
Emily frowned.
"What secret?"
Damien looked directly into her eyes.
May you like
"The truth about your daughter."
