Chapter 6 – The Fall

Chapter 6 – The Fall

Victoria's scream echoed through Ethan's phone.

Then—

Silence.

"Ethan?"

He listened carefully.

Nothing.

Only static.

Then the line disconnected.

His heart sank.

He immediately called back.

The number you are trying to reach is unavailable.

Ethan grabbed his car keys.

"Prepare the vehicles!"

Within seconds, security guards rushed into the hallway.

"Sir?"

"Victoria Langley is in danger."

Five black SUVs roared out of Carter Manor, disappearing into the night.

The Penthouse

The front door to Victoria's apartment hung half open.

One of the security guards whispered,

"Something's wrong."

Ethan pushed the door open.

The living room was in ruins.

Broken glass covered the marble floor.

Furniture had been overturned.

The television screen was shattered.

A dining chair lay on its side with one leg snapped clean off.

There had been a struggle.

A violent one.

"Search every room."

The guards spread out.

Minutes later, one of them shouted.

"Sir!"

Ethan hurried into the bedroom.

The balcony doors were wide open.

Cold wind swept through the curtains.

Near the edge of the balcony...

A single high heel.

Covered in blood.

Ethan picked it up carefully.

The stain was fresh.

But there was no body.

No sign of Victoria.

Only a small black envelope resting on the balcony railing.

Inside was a handwritten message.

One witness has fallen.

You're too late again.

Ethan crushed the paper in his fist.

"No..."

He wasn't going to lose another innocent person.

Not while Damien Black was still breathing.

Carter Holdings

The next morning...

Panic spread through the company's headquarters.

Employees gathered around television screens.

The financial news was relentless.

"Carter Holdings shares plunge another eighteen percent."

"International partners suspend negotiations."

"Board expected to vote on emergency leadership changes."

The stock market had become a battlefield.

Investors no longer cared about facts.

Only headlines.

And every headline carried the Carter name.

Inside the executive boardroom, tension filled the air.

The acting CFO projected the latest figures.

"We've lost nearly three hundred million dollars in market value since the incident."

One director sighed.

"This can't continue."

Another added,

"The banks are asking questions."

A third looked directly at Ethan.

"We need stability."

Nathan's empty chair remained at the end of the table.

No one mentioned him.

But everyone was thinking about him.

The oldest director finally spoke.

"Mr. Carter..."

"The board is requesting that you take a temporary leave."

Silence.

Ethan slowly stood.

"You believe removing me will solve this?"

"No."

"It will reassure investors."

Ethan looked around the room.

"How many of you truly believe these accusations?"

No one answered.

Not because they believed the lies.

Because they were afraid.

Afraid of losing money.

Afraid of losing influence.

Afraid of standing beside the truth.

Ethan gave a faint, disappointed smile.

"So this is what loyalty costs."

Hospital Garden

Emily sat beneath a large oak tree, watching autumn leaves drift across the grass.

She had finally been discharged but remained under daily medical supervision.

Mrs. Brooks handed her a tablet.

"I thought you should know."

Emily read the financial headlines.

Then she quietly turned the screen off.

Mrs. Brooks frowned.

"You aren't worried?"

"I am."

"But not about the money."

"The company could collapse."

Emily nodded.

"So could a marriage."

Mrs. Brooks looked confused.

Emily smiled gently.

"If Ethan starts fighting everyone..."

"He'll eventually forget what he's fighting for."

She looked toward the hospital entrance where her husband was expected to arrive.

"I won't let that happen."

The Puppet Master

Far from the city center...

Damien Black stood inside an abandoned winery that had been converted into a secret operations base.

Large monitors displayed live news channels.

Company stock prices.

Security camera feeds.

Even Carter Holdings' internal emails.

His assistant entered.

"The market reacted exactly as predicted."

Damien smiled.

"And Ethan?"

"He refused to step down."

"Good."

The assistant hesitated.

"We still haven't found Victoria."

Damien's expression remained calm.

"You weren't supposed to."

"Sir?"

"She's alive."

The assistant blinked.

"You let her escape?"

Damien walked toward the window.

"I don't waste useful pieces."

"Then why attack her?"

"Because fear spreads faster than death."

He looked at the city below.

"Everyone now believes she disappeared."

"And while they search for her..."

"...I'll be somewhere else."

An Unexpected Rescue

In an abandoned chapel nearly thirty miles outside the city...

Victoria slowly opened her eyes.

Everything hurt.

Her wrists were tied.

A bruise darkened one side of her face.

She looked around.

Empty pews.

Broken stained-glass windows.

Dust floating through beams of sunlight.

Then she heard footsteps.

Her breathing quickened.

The old wooden door creaked open.

A hooded figure entered.

Victoria struggled against the ropes.

"Who are you?"

The stranger lowered the hood.

Victoria gasped.

"Daniel?"

The former kitchen assistant smiled weakly.

"I'm sorry it took so long."

He quickly untied her hands.

"How did you find me?"

"I followed them."

"You what?"

"I knew they were watching you."

Victoria stared.

"You risked your life..."

Daniel nodded.

"Mrs. Carter once saved my family."

"I couldn't stand by and do nothing."

Victoria covered her face as tears streamed down.

"I don't deserve people like her."

Daniel helped her to her feet.

"Maybe not."

"But you can still become someone she'd be proud of."

The Board's Decision

That afternoon...

The emergency vote finally began.

Twelve directors.

One decision.

The chairman spoke.

"Those in favor of appointing interim leadership..."

Hands slowly rose.

One.

Three.

Five.

Seven.

Nine.

A majority.

The chairman lowered his head.

"The motion passes."

Ethan Carter was officially suspended as acting CEO of Carter Holdings.

No applause followed.

Only silence.

Ethan calmly removed his company identification badge and placed it on the conference table.

He looked around the room.

"I built this company with people I trusted."

He paused.

"Today..."

"I learned trust can be bought."

Without another word...

He walked out.

Behind him...

Several directors avoided eye contact.

Not because they hated him.

Because deep down...

They knew they had betrayed the wrong man.

Home

Emily was waiting in the living room when Ethan returned.

He looked exhausted.

His tie hung loose.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

She already knew.

"You lost the vote."

He nodded.

She stood and walked toward him.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Finally Ethan whispered,

"I failed."

Emily gently took his hands.

"No."

"I lost everything."

She shook her head.

"You still have me."

He laughed bitterly.

"The company..."

"The board..."

"Our reputation..."

"It's all falling apart."

Emily placed one hand over his heart.

"Listen carefully."

He looked into her eyes.

"They can take your title."

"They can take your office."

"They can even take your fortune."

Her voice became softer.

"But only you can decide whether they take the man I married."

Ethan felt something inside him shift.

For days he had focused on revenge.

On Damien.

On betrayal.

On the company.

He had forgotten the reason he was fighting.

Emily smiled.

"We'll build everything again if we have to."

"As long as we build it together."

He pulled her gently into his arms.

For the first time since the attack...

He allowed himself to cry.

The Final Blow

Late that evening...

Every television channel interrupted its regular programming.

BREAKING NEWS

The anchor looked directly into the camera.

"We have just received confirmation that Carter Holdings has been removed from negotiations for the government's largest infrastructure contract."

The contract was worth over five billion dollars.

Employees across the country watched in disbelief.

Investors panicked.

The company's stock dropped another eleven percent before markets even closed.

At Carter Manor, the silence was unbearable.

Mrs. Brooks quietly turned off the television.

No one spoke.

Then—

The mansion's landline rang.

Ethan answered.

A familiar voice greeted him.

Damien Black.

"You've had quite a day."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"What do you want?"

"I wanted you to watch your empire fall."

"You've made your point."

"No."

Damien chuckled softly.

"I've only removed the foundation."

"The collapse..."

"...is just beginning."

The call ended.

Ethan stood motionless.

Then the security director rushed into the room.

"Sir!"

Ethan turned.

"We've located Victoria Langley."

"Where?"

"She escaped."

"And..."

The director handed him a flash drive.

"She says this contains proof."

"Proof of what?"

The director's face turned pale.

"Proof that someone inside the Carter family has been working with Damien Black..."

May you like

"...for more than twenty years."
