Chapter 4 – Betrayal

Chapter 4 – Betrayal

The words hit Ethan like a hammer.

"They have an arrest warrant... for Mrs. Emily Carter."

For a brief second, the room fell deathly silent.

Then Ethan stood.

"What charge?"

The security director swallowed hard.

"They claim Mrs. Carter assaulted Miss Victoria Langley."

Ethan's eyes turned cold.

"Assaulted?"

"Yes, sir."

"They're saying Mrs. Carter started the confrontation."

A bitter smile appeared on Ethan's face.

"So that's their next move."

The Police Arrive

Two detectives entered the hospital with several uniformed officers.

Reporters immediately surrounded the entrance.

Camera flashes exploded like fireworks.

"Mr. Carter!"

"Is it true your wife attacked Miss Langley?"

"Did Mrs. Carter pretend to be a maid to deceive your guests?"

"Has your marriage been affected by the affair rumors?"

Security pushed the media back, but the damage had already begun.

Inside Emily's room, Detective Marcus Hill removed a document from his briefcase.

"Mrs. Emily Carter."

"We have received a formal complaint."

Emily looked up calmly.

"I assume it's from Victoria Langley."

The detective nodded.

"She claims you intentionally provoked her."

"And then injured yourself to frame her."

The nurse gasped.

"What?"

Emily remained surprisingly composed.

"I see."

Ethan stepped forward.

"My attorney will handle this."

Marcus sighed.

"Mr. Carter, I know your legal team is excellent."

"But a complaint has been filed."

"We're required to investigate."

Ethan folded his arms.

"And have you watched the security footage?"

Marcus hesitated.

"What footage?"

Ethan's expression hardened.

"They never sent it to you."

The detective frowned.

"They told us the cameras were malfunctioning."

"They lied."

Silence.

Marcus slowly looked toward his partner.

"Who filed the evidence?"

His partner checked the report.

"It came through Attorney William Brooks."

Ethan immediately recognized the name.

William Brooks.

One of the city's most expensive lawyers.

And...

The Langley family's longtime legal adviser.

Someone had deliberately hidden the surveillance footage.

Langley Headquarters

Victoria stared at the television in disbelief.

News anchors repeated the same headline.

"Emily Carter Under Criminal Investigation."

She jumped to her feet.

"I never filed criminal charges!"

Her father looked equally shocked.

"What?"

"I only wanted to apologize."

Richard grabbed the phone.

"Call our legal department."

Five minutes later...

The chief attorney arrived, sweating.

"Sir..."

"Did you file charges against Emily Carter?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

The attorney hesitated.

"...William Brooks."

Richard slammed his fist onto the desk.

"He works for us!"

The attorney lowered his head.

"He resigned this morning."

Silence.

"When?"

"Thirty minutes before the complaint was submitted."

Richard's face turned pale.

"He planned this."

Victoria whispered,

"Adrian..."

She suddenly remembered every word he had said.

"You stopped having that choice the moment you picked up my call."

She wasn't controlling the situation anymore.

Someone else was.

The Hidden Enemy

In a private office overlooking the city, Adrian Cross watched the news with satisfaction.

His assistant smiled.

"The police investigation has begun."

Adrian nodded.

"And Ethan?"

"He'll fight."

"Of course."

Adrian poured himself a glass of whiskey.

"I don't want Emily arrested."

The assistant looked confused.

"You don't?"

"No."

"I want Ethan distracted."

He smiled faintly.

"A desperate man makes emotional decisions."

"And emotional decisions destroy empires."

The assistant hesitated.

"Our investors inside Carter Holdings are ready."

Adrian's smile widened.

"Excellent."

"It's time for Phase Two."

A Familiar Face

That afternoon, Ethan returned to Carter Holdings for the first time since the attack.

The executive boardroom was already full.

Twelve directors sat around the polished oak table.

Everyone stood as Ethan entered.

Everyone...

Except one.

His cousin.

Nathan Carter.

Nathan leaned back casually.

"Tough week?"

Ethan ignored the comment.

"The meeting begins now."

Financial reports appeared on the giant screen.

The Chief Financial Officer cleared his throat.

"Three international investors have suspended negotiations."

Another executive spoke.

"Several suppliers are requesting early payment."

A third added,

"Our stock has fallen twelve percent."

The room grew tense.

Nathan finally smiled.

"Maybe it's time you stepped aside for a while."

Every head turned.

Ethan looked directly at him.

"Explain."

Nathan folded his hands.

"The company needs stability."

"Right now..."

"You're making decisions based on personal feelings."

Ethan's voice remained calm.

"You mean protecting my pregnant wife."

"I mean risking billions because of one incident."

One incident.

The words echoed through the room.

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

Nathan continued.

"If public confidence keeps falling..."

"The board may need temporary leadership."

Silence.

Then...

One by one...

Three directors slowly raised their hands.

Then another.

Then another.

Five directors.

Supporting Nathan.

Ethan stared at them.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

"You've already made your decision."

No one answered.

Nathan smiled.

"We're only thinking about the company."

Ethan looked around the table.

"Were you?"

"Or were you thinking about yourselves?"

Before anyone could respond...

The conference room doors opened.

The security director rushed inside.

"Sir."

"What happened?"

"We've traced the anonymous messages."

Ethan stood immediately.

"To whom?"

The director connected his laptop.

A map appeared.

The messages originated from disposable phones.

But every signal had passed through one location.

A luxury apartment building.

Owned by...

Nathan Carter.

The room froze.

Nathan laughed.

"That's ridiculous."

"It proves nothing."

The security director nodded.

"Normally..."

"Yes."

"But..."

He pressed another button.

Bank records appeared.

A transfer.

$500,000.

Sent two weeks earlier.

From an offshore account.

To Nathan.

Nathan's smile disappeared.

Hospital Room 808

Emily watched the news quietly.

Mrs. Brooks sat beside her.

"I never imagined people could lie like this."

Emily smiled gently.

"They're afraid."

"Of what?"

"The truth."

Mrs. Brooks frowned.

Emily looked toward the window.

"When people build their lives on lies..."

"They fear honest people."

The elderly housekeeper squeezed Emily's hand.

"You still believe there's good in people."

Emily nodded.

"There has to be."

Just then...

The room door opened.

Victoria Langley walked inside.

She wasn't wearing designer clothes.

No diamonds.

No makeup.

Only a simple gray coat.

Emily looked surprised.

Victoria stopped several feet away.

"I know you don't want to see me."

Emily said nothing.

Victoria lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

Silence.

Tears slowly rolled down Victoria's cheeks.

"I was arrogant."

"I was cruel."

"I have no excuse."

Emily watched quietly.

Victoria continued.

"I didn't file those charges."

"I didn't leak those videos."

"I swear."

Emily studied her face.

For the first time...

She saw no pride.

Only regret.

"You believe me?"

Victoria asked softly.

Emily answered honestly.

"Yes."

Victoria looked shocked.

"After everything I did?"

Emily nodded.

"People can change."

Victoria burst into tears.

"You shouldn't forgive me."

Emily smiled sadly.

"I'm not forgiving what you did."

"I'm giving you the chance to become someone better."

Those words shattered the last wall around Victoria's heart.

She fell to her knees.

"I'm so sorry..."

Before Emily could respond...

The television suddenly switched to Breaking News.

Every screen in the hospital changed.

A news anchor spoke urgently.

"Breaking news."

"Carter Holdings Executive Director Nathan Carter has disappeared following allegations of financial misconduct."

Another image appeared.

Nathan running from the company parking garage.

Then...

A black SUV.

Its rear door opened.

Nathan climbed inside.

The license plate was blurred.

But one detail was unmistakable.

The man opening the SUV door wore...

A silver ring.

The same silver ring seen in the reflection of the edited video.

Ethan stared at the television.

His heartbeat quickened.

He finally remembered.

The ring.

He had seen it years ago.

It belonged to only one man.

A man everyone believed had died in a private jet crash...

Five years earlier.

Ethan whispered the name in disbelief.

"...Damien Black."

Across the city...

Inside the black SUV...

The mysterious man slowly removed his gloves.

The silver ring gleamed under the dim cabin light.

He smiled as Nathan trembled beside him.

"You failed."

Nathan lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

Damien Black looked out the window at the city skyline.

"No..."

His voice was calm.

"You're exactly where I wanted you to be."

Then he gave a chilling order.

"Prepare the next move."

"I want Ethan to lose..."

May you like

"...someone he still trusts."
