Chapter 5 – Blood Isn't Always Family

Chapter 5 – Blood Isn't Always Family
The black SUV disappeared into the evening traffic.
Inside, Nathan Carter sat rigidly in the leather seat, his hands trembling so badly he could barely fasten his seatbelt.
Across from him, Damien Black calmly poured himself a cup of coffee.
He didn't look like a man who had been presumed dead for five years.
He looked composed.
Patient.
Dangerously intelligent.
Without looking up, he asked,
"Why are you shaking?"
Nathan swallowed.
"Ethan knows about the money."
Damien took a slow sip.
"Yes."
"He'll come after me."
Damien smiled faintly.
"He'll come after the truth."
"And that's far more dangerous."
Five Years Earlier...
Rain poured over the private airfield.
Emergency crews surrounded the smoking wreckage of a luxury jet.
The official report was simple.
No survivors.
Among the names listed was Damien Black, founder of Blackstone Capital and one of Ethan Carter's biggest competitors.
The business world mourned for exactly three days.
Then everyone moved on.
Except...
The Carter family.
Because only Ethan knew something the investigators never discovered.
Damien's body had never been found.
He had searched the crash site himself.
Nothing.
Not a single trace.
He had told the authorities.
No one believed him.
Eventually...
Even he accepted the official story.
Until tonight.
Carter Manor
Ethan paced inside his study.
Mrs. Brooks knocked softly.
"You asked for the family records."
She handed him a thick leather folder.
The Carter family tree dated back nearly a century.
He opened it.
Parents.
Grandparents.
Cousins.
Business inheritances.
Marriage records.
Nothing unusual.
Until he reached Nathan's file.
A small note caught his attention.
Adopted at age seven.
Ethan frowned.
He had known Nathan was adopted by Uncle Henry after a tragic accident claimed his parents.
But something felt strange.
He looked closer.
Nathan's original surname had been covered with correction ink.
Someone had intentionally erased it.
"Who altered this?"
Mrs. Brooks adjusted her glasses.
"I don't know."
"It wasn't there when your grandfather was alive."
Ethan carefully held the page beneath a desk lamp.
A faint outline appeared beneath the ink.
Only three letters remained visible.
B...L...A...
His heart skipped a beat.
Black.
Hospital
Emily was finally allowed to leave her room for a short walk in the hospital garden.
The afternoon sun warmed her face.
Victoria walked beside her quietly.
Neither woman spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Victoria broke the silence.
"You really trusted me."
Emily smiled.
"I chose to."
"Why?"
"Because hatred is exhausting."
Victoria looked down.
"I don't deserve kindness."
Emily gently touched her arm.
"Perhaps not."
Victoria's eyes widened.
Emily continued.
"But sometimes..."
"The people who deserve kindness the least..."
"...need it the most."
Victoria fought back tears.
"You make forgiveness sound so easy."
Emily shook her head.
"It isn't."
"It's a choice."
Before Victoria could answer, a familiar voice interrupted.
"Mrs. Carter?"
Both women turned.
Daniel—the kitchen assistant—stood holding a bouquet of white lilies.
His face looked thinner than ever.
"I'm sorry to disturb you."
Emily smiled warmly.
"You didn't."
Daniel lowered his head.
"My wife wanted to thank you."
"For paying her hospital bills."
Victoria looked confused.
Emily immediately changed the subject.
"How is she?"
Daniel smiled for the first time in weeks.
"The doctors say she's going to recover."
Emily nodded happily.
"That's wonderful."
After Daniel left, Victoria stared at Emily.
"You paid for his wife's surgery."
Emily laughed softly.
"I didn't."
"The Carter Foundation did."
"But you approved it."
Emily shrugged.
"It doesn't matter who signs the paperwork."
"What matters is that someone gets another chance."
Victoria looked away, ashamed.
She remembered threatening this woman with scissors.
Emily had spent the same week saving strangers.
Carter Holdings
The emergency board meeting had become a battlefield.
Several directors demanded answers.
Nathan's disappearance had terrified investors.
The acting Chief Financial Officer spoke first.
"We've frozen Nathan's access to company accounts."
Another executive added,
"Authorities have begun tracing offshore transfers."
Then the oldest director cleared his throat.
"There is something Mr. Carter deserves to know."
Ethan looked up.
"What is it?"
The elderly man removed a faded envelope from his briefcase.
"I promised your grandfather I would never reveal this..."
"...unless the Carter family was in danger."
He handed it to Ethan.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Dated twenty-three years earlier.
Ethan immediately recognized his grandfather's handwriting.
If you are reading this, then someone has betrayed our family.
Not every Carter shares Carter blood.
One child entered this family under false circumstances.
I discovered the truth too late.
Someone wanted access to our fortune.
Trust actions, not names.
Blood isn't always family...
And family isn't always blood.
The room became silent.
Ethan slowly folded the letter.
"Who else knows about this?"
The old director lowered his eyes.
"Only your grandfather..."
"...and me."
An Unexpected Visitor
Late that evening...
Victoria returned to her penthouse.
The apartment felt strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
She reached for the light switch.
Nothing happened.
The electricity was out.
"Hello?"
No answer.
She cautiously walked inside.
The city lights barely illuminated the room.
Then—
Click.
A lighter ignited.
A small flame revealed someone sitting calmly in her living room.
Damien Black.
He smiled.
"You finally came home."
Victoria froze.
"You broke into my apartment."
"I used my key."
"You don't have one."
"I do now."
Her heart raced.
"What do you want?"
Damien stood.
"I gave you an opportunity."
"You turned it into guilt."
"I'm done helping you."
He walked closer.
"No."
"You've only just begun."
Victoria backed away.
"I'll call the police."
Damien laughed.
"And tell them what?"
"That a dead man is sitting in your living room?"
She couldn't answer.
He leaned close enough for her to hear every word.
"Ethan thinks you're the enemy."
"You need him to keep believing that."
Victoria shook her head.
"I'm telling him everything."
Damien's smile vanished.
"Then your father dies."
Silence.
He placed several photographs on the table.
Richard Langley leaving his office.
Entering his car.
Meeting clients.
Every picture had been taken that very day.
Victoria stared in horror.
"You've been following him."
Damien whispered,
"I've been protecting my investment."
Then he walked toward the balcony doors.
Without another word...
He disappeared into the darkness.
Leaving only one sentence behind.
"You have forty-eight hours."
Carter Manor
Near midnight...
Ethan couldn't sleep.
He returned to the security room once again.
The silver ring still bothered him.
The erased surname bothered him even more.
He replayed old family videos.
Birthday parties.
Christmas dinners.
Graduations.
Nathan appeared in every recording after the age of seven.
Then...
One forgotten VHS tape.
The label simply read:
Summer Picnic – 23 Years Ago
The footage was grainy.
Children running through a garden.
His grandfather laughing.
Then the camera accidentally turned toward the driveway.
A luxury sedan had just arrived.
A little boy stepped out.
Seven years old.
Terrified.
Holding a worn-out teddy bear.
Beside him stood a tall man wearing dark sunglasses.
As the man bent down to hug the boy goodbye...
The sunlight reflected off his right hand.
A silver ring.
Exactly the same one.
Ethan's breathing stopped.
The camera zoomed accidentally for only a second.
Long enough to capture the man's face.
It was Damien Black.
Alive.
Twenty-three years ago.
Smiling as he handed the frightened child to Ethan's uncle.
Nathan had never been an orphan.
He had been planted inside the Carter family.
For more than two decades.
The betrayal had begun long before Ethan ever became CEO.
Long before the jet crash.
Long before Emily entered his life.
It had been patiently waiting...
For the perfect moment.
Ethan whispered to himself,
"My God..."
"...this was never about business."
At that exact moment, his secure phone rang.
Only four people in the world had that number.
He answered immediately.
"This is Ethan."
A frightened female voice whispered through the line.
"Mr. Carter..."
It was Victoria.
"They're watching me."
"I know who Damien Black really is."
Before Ethan could reply—
A loud crash echoed through the call.
Victoria screamed.
May you like
The line went dead.
