Chapter 8 – The Secret Evidence

Chapter 8 – The Secret Evidence
The neonatal intensive care unit was almost silent.
Only the soft beeping of heart monitors filled the room.
Emily sat beside the incubator, her face pale from the premature delivery. Although she had barely slept, she couldn't take her eyes off her daughter.
The tiny baby stretched one hand through the opening of the incubator.
Emily gently slipped her finger into the baby's tiny palm.
Immediately, the little girl held on.
"So strong already," Emily whispered with a smile.
Ethan stood behind her, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.
"You should rest."
Emily shook her head.
"I waited seven months to meet her."
"I'm not leaving."
Ethan smiled.
"You've always been stubborn."
Emily looked at him.
"I learned from my husband."
For a brief moment...
The fear disappeared.
They were no longer targets.
No longer headlines.
Just two parents staring at the greatest miracle of their lives.
The Detective Returns
A knock interrupted the quiet.
Detective Marcus Hill stepped into the room.
His expression was serious.
"I hate to disturb you."
Ethan nodded.
"What happened?"
Marcus closed the door behind him.
"The charges against Emily..."
"...have been suspended."
Emily frowned.
"Suspended?"
"Not dismissed?"
Marcus sighed.
"Someone very powerful is interfering."
He placed a folder on the table.
"We finally received the surveillance footage from Carter Manor."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"So they couldn't hide it forever."
Marcus nodded.
"The video completely clears Emily."
"Then why isn't the case over?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Because the original evidence file..."
"...was replaced."
Silence.
"What do you mean?"
"The recording submitted to the court had been edited."
Emily exchanged a glance with Ethan.
"Someone altered official evidence."
Marcus nodded.
"And that means..."
"...we're no longer investigating a simple assault."
"We're investigating a criminal conspiracy."
Hidden in Plain Sight
Back at Carter Manor...
The security director continued reviewing weeks of surveillance footage.
He had watched hundreds of hours already.
Nothing unusual.
Until...
A cleaning robot passed through the east hallway.
The robot's camera accidentally recorded something the ceiling cameras had missed.
The footage showed Damien's mysterious cameraman standing outside the mansion fence.
He wasn't alone.
Someone inside the property opened a small side gate.
Only for three seconds.
Long enough to hand over a sealed envelope.
The security director immediately froze the image.
The person's face was hidden beneath a hood.
But one detail stood out.
A distinctive silver bracelet.
He enlarged the image.
Then another frame.
The hood shifted slightly.
Just enough to reveal part of the person's cheek.
A small crescent-shaped birthmark.
The director's eyes widened.
"I know who this is..."
The Forgotten Room
Meanwhile...
Mrs. Brooks searched through old storage rooms beneath Carter Manor.
She was looking for baby furniture for Emily's daughter.
Instead...
She found something else.
A locked wooden chest covered in dust.
Attached to it was a faded label.
Property of Eleanor Brooks.
She frowned.
"I don't remember this."
The key was still hanging from an old nail nearby.
Slowly...
She opened the chest.
Inside were dozens of photo albums.
Old letters.
Hospital documents.
And...
A VHS tape labeled:
Private – Do Not Destroy
Mrs. Brooks frowned.
She carried the tape upstairs.
A Visitor in Disguise
Late that afternoon...
A woman dressed as a nurse entered the neonatal unit.
She wore a surgical mask.
A cap.
An identification badge.
She pushed a medicine cart toward the nurses' station.
"Medication delivery."
The receptionist glanced at the paperwork.
Everything appeared normal.
"Room?"
"NICU Three."
She nodded.
"Go ahead."
The woman continued walking.
Her movements were calm.
Steady.
Professional.
Until she reached Baby Carter's incubator.
She looked around.
No one nearby.
Slowly...
She reached into her pocket.
A syringe.
Filled with clear liquid.
Just as she lifted it—
"Excuse me."
The woman froze.
Daniel stood behind her carrying fresh flowers.
"I think you're in the wrong room."
She smiled beneath the mask.
"No."
"I'm here for the baby."
Daniel looked at her ID badge.
Something felt wrong.
The hospital logo was slightly faded.
The photograph had been laminated crookedly.
His heartbeat quickened.
"Can I see your authorization?"
The woman's eyes changed.
Cold.
Calculating.
She suddenly shoved Daniel aside.
The syringe fell onto the floor.
Alarms immediately sounded.
Security guards rushed into the hallway.
The fake nurse sprinted toward the emergency exit.
Daniel chased her.
She disappeared down the stairwell.
By the time guards reached the parking lot...
She was gone.
Only the syringe remained.
Still lying on the floor.
The Laboratory
Within an hour...
The syringe had been analyzed.
The chief toxicologist entered Ethan's temporary office at the hospital.
His expression was grave.
"This wasn't medicine."
"What was it?"
"A rare paralytic agent."
Emily's face went pale.
"What would it have done?"
The doctor answered quietly.
"To a premature infant..."
"It would almost certainly have been fatal."
The room fell silent.
Ethan looked toward the incubator where his daughter slept peacefully.
His hands began shaking.
Not from fear.
From rage.
Someone had tried to murder his newborn child.
The VHS Tape
Back at Carter Manor...
Mrs. Brooks finally found an old VCR.
She inserted the tape.
Static filled the screen.
Then...
A hospital room appeared.
Twenty-three years earlier.
A young woman held a newborn baby.
Beside her stood Ethan's late grandfather.
Mrs. Brooks frowned.
She didn't recognize the woman.
Then the camera shifted.
A doctor spoke.
"Mr. Carter..."
"The twins are healthy."
Twins?
Mrs. Brooks leaned closer.
The doctor continued.
"One boy..."
"And one girl."
Her eyes widened.
Twins?
The Carter family records mentioned only one child born that day.
The tape continued.
The young mother smiled weakly.
"Promise me..."
"They'll always stay together."
Ethan's grandfather nodded.
"I swear."
Suddenly...
The hospital room door opened.
A man stepped inside wearing a dark suit.
His face was partially hidden.
But the silver ring on his right hand gleamed under the lights.
Damien Black.
He smiled.
"I've come to see my children."
The screen abruptly cut to black.
Mrs. Brooks gasped.
"My God..."
The Secret Evidence
That evening...
Everyone gathered in Ethan's study.
The VHS tape played once more.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
When it ended...
The silence felt endless.
Emily finally whispered,
"He said..."
"'My children.'"
Mrs. Brooks nodded slowly.
"The twins."
Ethan stared at the frozen image of Damien Black.
"But Nathan wasn't a twin."
"No."
Mrs. Brooks pointed toward the screen.
"The babies weren't Nathan."
Everyone looked confused.
She slowly opened one of the hospital documents from the chest.
A birth certificate.
Then another.
One was marked Male.
The other...
Female.
The father's name had been torn away.
But the mother's name remained.
Isabella Black.
Emily looked at Ethan.
"Black..."
Mrs. Brooks nodded.
"Damien Black's wife."
Ethan frowned.
"But why would my grandfather hide them?"
Mrs. Brooks unfolded one final letter.
The ink had faded with time.
She read aloud.
"If Damien ever returns, he must never find the children.
They are innocent.
Protect them... even from their own blood."
The room became deathly quiet.
Emily instinctively looked toward the hospital nursery.
Toward her sleeping daughter.
Then back at the letter.
Ethan slowly pieced the clues together.
"The children disappeared..."
"The records were altered..."
"Damien has spent twenty-three years searching..."
Emily whispered,
"Searching for his own children."
At that exact moment...
The security director's phone rang.
He answered.
His face immediately lost all color.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"We identified the person who opened the side gate for Damien's cameraman."
Ethan stood.
"Who?"
The director swallowed hard.
"It wasn't an employee."
"It wasn't security."
"It was..."
"...Mrs. Brooks."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Mrs. Brooks stared at him in disbelief.
"What?"
"I would never—"
The director slowly turned his laptop toward them.
The paused surveillance image was unmistakable.
The woman opening the gate...
May you like
Had Mrs. Brooks' face.
