Chapter 10 – Public Humiliation

Chapter 10 – Public Humiliation
The steel shutters crashed into place with a deafening clang.
The underground vault trembled as the emergency lockdown sealed every exit.
Victoria instinctively grabbed Emily's arm.
"We have to get out."
Emily remained calm.
Her eyes never left Damien Black.
He stood only a few feet away, holding up the black flash drive as if it were a priceless trophy.
"The truth about my daughter?" Emily asked.
Damien smiled.
"You'll hear it soon enough."
He slipped the flash drive back into his pocket.
"But not from me."
The Countdown
Above them, the charity gala continued.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Celebrities.
Television cameras broadcast the event live across the country.
None of the guests realized what was happening beneath the ballroom.
Damien glanced at his watch.
"In exactly fifteen minutes..."
"...everyone upstairs will witness the fall of the Carter family."
Victoria frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Damien laughed softly.
"I've spent twenty-three years building this moment."
"Tonight..."
"...I don't destroy Ethan."
"I destroy his name."
With that, he turned and disappeared through a hidden security door that slid shut behind him.
Emily ran to the wall.
"No handle."
Victoria searched frantically.
"There has to be another exit."
Emily stopped.
"Listen."
A faint humming sound echoed from the ceiling.
Ventilation shafts.
She looked up and smiled.
"I think we just found one."
Ethan Refuses to Wait
Back at Carter Manor, Ethan paced the study while staring at his phone.
Emily's location tracker had stopped moving.
The last signal came from the Grand Regent Hotel.
The security director frowned.
"The tracker went offline three minutes ago."
Ethan's instincts screamed.
"It's a trap."
Marcus Hill nodded.
"Then let's spring it."
Within seconds, a convoy of black SUVs sped toward the hotel.
The Grand Regent Ballroom
The charity gala was in full swing.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated hundreds of elegantly dressed guests.
Reporters moved from table to table interviewing influential business figures.
Then the lights dimmed.
The host smiled.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"We have a special presentation this evening."
A giant LED screen descended behind the stage.
The audience applauded politely.
The host continued,
"This exclusive documentary reveals the hidden truth behind one of our country's most powerful families."
Several guests exchanged curious glances.
The screen came alive.
A familiar face appeared.
Emily Carter.
Still wearing her maid's uniform.
The audience whispered.
Another clip followed.
Emily hugging Daniel.
Another.
Emily carrying groceries.
Another.
The edited footage from weeks earlier.
But this version was even worse.
Carefully manipulated voice recordings made it sound as though Emily admitted to deceiving Ethan.
Fake subtitles claimed she was secretly planning to seize Carter Holdings through their unborn child.
Gasps spread through the ballroom.
Business leaders shook their heads.
Investors looked horrified.
One reporter whispered,
"This is career-ending."
Fighting Back
Inside the ventilation shaft, Emily and Victoria crawled toward the ballroom ceiling.
The narrow passage barely allowed them to move.
Victoria whispered,
"I can hear applause."
Emily nodded.
"They've already started."
Ahead, a metal grate overlooked the stage.
Emily carefully peered through it.
Her own face filled the giant screen.
The audience believed every lie.
Victoria clenched her fists.
"We're too late."
Emily looked toward the lighting control booth.
"No."
"We're exactly on time."
She smiled.
"Remember the drive?"
Victoria reached into her pocket.
Still there.
The copied files.
An idea flashed through Emily's mind.
She pointed toward the booth.
"If we can access the broadcast system..."
"...everyone will see the truth instead."
The Public Spectacle
On stage, the celebrity lawyer raised his voice dramatically.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"The evidence speaks for itself."
"Carter Holdings has deceived the public for years."
The audience erupted into murmurs.
Some investors quietly left the room.
Others immediately called their financial advisers.
The company's reputation was collapsing live on national television.
Then—
The giant screen suddenly flickered.
The fake video froze.
The lawyer frowned.
"What happened?"
Technicians rushed toward the control room.
The screen went black.
For three long seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then a new video began.
The Real Footage
High-definition security footage appeared.
Unedited.
Timestamped.
Crystal clear.
Victoria Langley could be seen ordering Emily to kneel.
The tea tray crashing.
The insults.
The scissors.
The shove.
The blood.
Then Ethan's arrival.
The room fell completely silent.
No music.
No whispers.
Nothing.
Every lie from the past week collapsed in less than two minutes.
One guest stood up.
"She never attacked anyone."
Another shouted,
"They framed her!"
The celebrity lawyer's face turned white.
"This..."
"This isn't possible."
The footage continued.
Another recording followed.
Damien's hired cameraman handing envelopes to board members.
Offshore bank transfers.
Secret meetings.
Nathan Carter accepting cash.
Then...
The names of every bribed executive appeared across the screen.
One by one.
Along with the exact amounts they had received.
Panic spread across the ballroom.
Several executives rushed toward the exits.
Police officers waiting outside immediately intercepted them.
Marcus Hill smiled.
"Right on schedule."
The Walk of Shame
The ballroom doors opened.
Ethan Carter walked in.
Calm.
Confident.
Behind him stood detectives, financial investigators, and dozens of uniformed officers.
Every television camera turned toward him.
The celebrity lawyer attempted to leave.
Marcus blocked his path.
"Leaving already?"
The lawyer forced a smile.
"I have another appointment."
Marcus produced a warrant.
"You have an appointment with us."
Handcuffs clicked around the lawyer's wrists.
Reporters surged forward.
Camera flashes exploded.
Several board members tried to hide their faces.
Others begged security for help.
But there was nowhere left to run.
Their humiliation unfolded live before millions of viewers.
Damien's Smile
From a private suite several floors above, Damien watched the chaos through a wall of glass.
His assistant looked nervous.
"We lost the ballroom."
Damien nodded.
"We did."
"The police have the files."
"They do."
"We should leave."
Damien remained perfectly calm.
"No."
He watched Ethan shaking hands with detectives.
Reporters now praised the Carter family instead of condemning them.
"The public loves redemption stories."
His assistant looked confused.
"You don't seem upset."
Damien smiled.
"They think tonight was their victory."
"It wasn't."
He reached into his jacket and removed the black flash drive.
The one no one had managed to steal.
"They copied only what I wanted them to copy."
His assistant's eyes widened.
"The real files..."
"...never left this room."
Damien slipped the drive back into his pocket.
"And once Ethan sees what's inside..."
"...he'll destroy himself."
A Hero Returns
Emily and Victoria finally emerged from the control booth.
The audience erupted into applause.
Not because they were wealthy.
Not because they were famous.
Because they had survived.
Victoria stood before the microphones.
Her voice trembled.
"I owe someone an apology."
She turned toward Emily.
"In front of everyone."
"I judged her by her clothes."
"I humiliated her."
"I nearly destroyed her family."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I will regret that for the rest of my life."
She bowed deeply.
"I'm sorry."
The ballroom remained silent.
Emily walked forward.
She gently lifted Victoria back to her feet.
"You've already started making things right."
Then she looked toward the cameras.
"I hope tonight reminds everyone of one thing."
"Never decide someone's worth..."
"...by the uniform they're wearing."
The ballroom erupted into applause.
Millions watching at home shared the clip within minutes.
Emily's words spread faster than any rumor ever had.
The Last Call
As the celebration continued...
Ethan's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Damien's voice came through, calm as ever.
"Congratulations."
"You won the audience."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"You're finished."
Damien chuckled.
"Am I?"
"I've lost a few pawns."
"But kings don't mourn pawns."
"You'll be arrested."
"Perhaps."
"But before that..."
"...go to Saint Gabriel Hospital."
Ethan froze.
"What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything."
"I simply told someone..."
"...where your daughter is."
The call ended.
Ethan's face lost all color.
Without another word, he turned and sprinted toward the exit.
Emily saw the terror in his eyes.
"What happened?"
Ethan looked back only once.
"Our daughter..."
May you like
"...she's in danger."
