Chapter 10 — The Hidden Maternity File

Chapter 10 — The Hidden Maternity File
Khloe read the report three times.
She understood every word.
She simply refused to believe them.
The paper trembled between her fingers.
PATERNITY CONFIRMED.
Beneath it was Marcus Thorne's name.
For several seconds, she couldn't breathe.
Then she looked up.
"What is this?"
Elena stood across the table.
"The truth."
"No."
Khloe shook her head.
"That's not possible."
Elena didn't answer.
Khloe stared at the document again.
"Marcus is my husband."
"I know."
"He is not my father."
"I never said he was."
Khloe's eyes narrowed.
"Then what does this mean?"
Elena leaned against the table.
"It means the sample used for the test belonged to someone who shares Marcus's biological lineage."
Khloe froze.
"What?"
"Read the report carefully."
Khloe looked again.
The wording was deliberate.
The test didn't say Marcus Thorne is the biological father of Khloe Rivers.
It said:
PATERNITY CONFIRMED.
But the reference sample was listed only as:
THORNE FAMILY MALE — DECEASED.
Khloe's heart began pounding.
"Then why did you show me Marcus's name?"
"Because I wanted you to think the worst."
Elena smiled.
"And you did."
Khloe's eyes hardened.
"You kidnapped me just to frighten me?"
"No."
Elena opened another file.
"I kidnapped you because you were about to discover this without me."
She placed the file in front of Khloe.
"Your real father was Edward Thorne."
Khloe stared.
"But Marcus..."
"Is Edward's son."
Khloe's stomach turned.
She understood.
The report was not saying Marcus was her father.
It was saying the biological sample belonged to Edward, and Marcus had been used as the visible reference because the laboratory was connected to the Thorne family.
A lie constructed from technically correct information.
Another trap.
Another carefully designed half-truth.
Khloe closed her eyes.
"You wanted me to believe Marcus and I were related."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because once you believed that, you would never trust him again."
Khloe looked up.
"You really are a monster."
Elena's expression barely changed.
"No."
She opened another folder.
"I am the woman who spent twenty-three years making sure you survived."
The room was cold.
Khloe noticed the window had been sealed.
The door was locked.
Two guards stood outside.
But Elena didn't look like someone who had kidnapped an enemy.
She looked like someone who had finally brought a lost daughter home.
That frightened Khloe more.
"Why do you care whether I survive?"
Elena sat across from her.
"Because you are my daughter."
Khloe stared.
"No."
"Yes."
"My mother was Sarah."
"Sarah raised you."
"She gave birth to me."
Elena smiled sadly.
"No."
Khloe's fingers tightened around the report.
"You're lying."
"Then look at the file."
She pushed another document across the table.
A birth record.
Original.
Not the altered copy Khloe had seen throughout her life.
The mother's name had been blacked out.
But beneath the black ink was another name.
ELENA MARIA ROSSI.
Khloe stopped breathing.
"No."
"Your mother changed the records."
"Why?"
"To keep you alive."
"From whom?"
Elena looked toward the locked door.
"Your father."
Khloe frowned.
"Edward?"
Elena nodded.
"He wanted you."
"Why?"
"Because you were the first heir."
Khloe stared.
"What about Marcus?"
"Marcus was never supposed to inherit."
That sentence changed everything.
Elena explained slowly.
Edward Thorne had built his empire around one idea.
Control.
He didn't trust banks.
He didn't trust partners.
He didn't trust governments.
Most importantly, he didn't trust his own family.
So he created a private succession structure.
The first child born from his bloodline would inherit the controlling interest.
That child was Khloe.
But Edward feared Elena.
He believed she would use Khloe to take control of the company.
So he separated them.
He changed the birth records.
He arranged for Khloe to disappear.
Then he created a second succession path.
Marcus.
His son.
His backup.
"If you were the first heir," Khloe said slowly, "why was I raised under another name?"
"Because Edward wanted you gone."
"And my mother?"
"She agreed."
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
"Why would she?"
"Because she believed Edward would kill you if he found you."
Khloe looked away.
"So Sarah saved me."
"Yes."
"And you?"
Elena's voice softened.
"I spent years trying to find you."
Khloe laughed bitterly.
"You found me."
"Yes."
"And then you attacked my family."
Elena's face hardened.
"I never attacked you."
"You used Isabella."
"I gave Isabella a choice."
"You threatened her mother."
"Yes."
Khloe stared.
"That's not a choice."
Elena didn't respond.
Across the city, Marcus was losing his mind.
He stood in the abandoned Rossi estate with Detective Harris, Victoria, and a tactical team.
The building was empty.
Every room had been searched.
No Khloe.
No Elena.
No guards.
Nothing.
Marcus slammed a hand against the wall.
"She was here."
Harris nodded.
"We found traces."
"Then where is she?"
"We don't know."
Victoria walked into the room.
She was holding an old photograph.
"Marcus."
He turned.
"What?"
She showed him.
A photograph of Elena standing beside Edward.
Between them was a baby.
Marcus stared.
"Khloe?"
Victoria nodded.
"The date is wrong."
"What do you mean?"
"The photograph is dated three years before Khloe was supposedly born."
Marcus looked closer.
There was something written on the back.
He turned it over.
SHE WAS BORN BEFORE THE ACCIDENT.
Marcus's face went pale.
"That's impossible."
Victoria whispered:
"Not if the birth records were changed."
Harris entered carrying another folder.
"We found a hidden office."
Marcus turned.
"Where?"
"Under the east wing."
They rushed downstairs.
Inside was a desk.
Old computers.
Stacks of paper.
And an enormous wall covered with photographs.
Khloe.
Marcus.
Isabella.
Edward.
Elena.
Victoria.
Richard.
Everyone.
But one photograph stood out.
It showed Marcus at seventeen.
Standing beside a young woman.
Marcus stared.
"I don't remember her."
Victoria looked at the photograph.
"Neither do I."
Harris pointed to the date.
"Twenty years ago."
Marcus shook his head.
"I was in boarding school."
"No."
Harris placed another document beside it.
"You weren't."
Marcus read it.
His school records showed him leaving the country for six weeks.
But his passport showed no travel.
The records had been fabricated.
Someone had removed six weeks from his life.
And Khloe had disappeared during those same six weeks.
Marcus's voice became quiet.
"Where was I?"
Victoria stared at the photograph.
"With Elena."
The discovery sent a shock through the entire investigation.
Marcus hadn't merely been watched.
He had been involved.
Unknowingly.
At seventeen, he had met Khloe.
But she had been too young to remember.
And whatever happened during those six weeks had been erased.
Harris looked at the evidence.
"There are medical records."
"Of what?"
"An accident."
Marcus looked up.
"What accident?"
"A car crash."
Victoria's face changed.
"Where?"
"Near the old Rossi estate."
Marcus stepped backward.
"No."
Harris continued.
"You were injured."
"How badly?"
"Head trauma."
Marcus touched his temple.
A memory flashed.
Rain.
A broken windshield.
A woman's voice.
A baby crying.
Then darkness.
He staggered.
Victoria grabbed his arm.
"Marcus."
"I remember something."
"What?"
"A woman."
"Elena?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"Who?"
Marcus closed his eyes.
"A young woman."
"What did she say?"
He swallowed.
"She told me to run."
In the hidden room, Khloe opened the maternity file.
The pages told a different story from everything she had believed.
Her mother had been Elena.
Her legal mother had been Sarah.
Her father was Edward.
And her birth had been concealed because of the trust.
But there was one page missing.
The final page.
Khloe noticed the gap.
"Where is the rest?"
Elena didn't answer.
"Where is the maternity report?"
"You don't need it."
"I need everything."
"You aren't ready."
Khloe slammed her hand onto the table.
"You kidnapped me."
Her voice cracked.
"You don't get to decide what I'm ready for."
Elena looked at her.
For the first time, emotion appeared in her eyes.
"You sound like Edward."
Khloe froze.
"What happened between you and him?"
Elena looked away.
"He loved control more than he loved people."
"Did he love you?"
"Once."
"Did he love me?"
Elena smiled sadly.
"That's why he was afraid of you."
Khloe turned the page.
A handwritten note appeared.
It was from Sarah.
I know you will search for your daughter.
I know you will blame yourself.
But if you truly love her, you must stay away.
Edward will destroy anyone who knows the truth.
Then the final line:
The child must grow up believing she is ordinary.
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
Sarah had protected her.
But why had she never told her?
Why had she allowed Khloe to spend her entire life believing she was someone else?
Because the secret had been bigger than identity.
It had been survival.
Elena stood.
"There is one thing you still don't understand."
"What?"
"You think Marcus is the person they want to separate you from."
"Isn't he?"
"No."
Elena walked toward the window.
"They want to separate you from the only person who can prove your identity."
"Who?"
Elena turned.
"Marcus."
Khloe frowned.
"Why?"
"Because his DNA is the key."
"What?"
"Edward's biological records were destroyed."
"Then how can you prove I'm his daughter?"
"Through Marcus."
Khloe understood.
Marcus shared Edward's DNA.
If Marcus's genetic markers matched hers, it would establish their shared biological connection to Edward.
But there was a problem.
"Then why would you make me think Marcus was my father?"
"Because someone has already altered the DNA records."
Khloe's face went pale.
"Who?"
Elena answered:
"Richard."
At the hospital, Harris received an emergency call.
"The laboratory is compromised."
Marcus turned.
"What happened?"
"The DNA files are gone."
"All of them?"
"Every sample connected to the Thorne family."
Marcus's face hardened.
"Who accessed them?"
The technician hesitated.
"Someone using your authorization."
Marcus stared.
"Mine?"
"Yes."
Harris looked at him.
"Your biometric credentials were used."
Marcus's expression changed.
"I never accessed the system."
Harris nodded.
"That's what I thought."
He opened another file.
"Someone cloned your identity."
Then Marcus remembered the photograph.
The young woman.
The six missing weeks.
The accident.
His memory had been altered.
Not only records.
His mind.
He looked at Victoria.
"Elena did something to me."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
"Then who?"
Victoria looked toward the hallway.
"Richard."
Richard had been close to Marcus since childhood.
He had attended family events.
Signed documents.
Managed assets.
He had known Marcus's routines.
His medical history.
His fingerprints.
His passwords.
He had access to everything.
Including the private medical records.
Including the trust.
Including the DNA database.
Including the hidden maternity file.
Marcus finally understood.
Richard didn't need to kill anyone.
He only needed to control the evidence.
At 10:18 a.m., Isabella escaped.
She didn't know how.
The guard assigned to her suddenly collapsed.
The door opened.
A voice whispered:
"Go."
Isabella stepped into the hallway.
She looked around.
Nobody.
Then she saw the note.
FIND KHLOE BEFORE ELENA DOES.
She ran.
At the Rossi estate, Elena heard footsteps.
She turned.
Khloe was standing in the doorway.
"Where are you going?"
Khloe stared.
"To find my husband."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"Move."
"You don't understand."
"I understand enough."
"You think Marcus can save you."
"He has."
"He's part of the problem."
"No."
Elena's voice became desperate.
"Khloe, listen to me."
"No."
"You are Edward's daughter."
"I know."
"You are the heir."
"I know."
"And Marcus is the second heir."
Khloe stopped.
Elena continued.
"That's why they need you separated."
"Who?"
"Everyone."
"That's not an answer."
Elena looked toward the door.
"Richard."
Khloe stared.
"He's coming for you."
"Then I'll deal with him."
"You can't."
"Why?"
Elena whispered:
"Because Richard isn't working alone."
The door behind Khloe opened.
She turned.
A man stood there.
Not Richard.
Not Marcus.
Not Harris.
Someone she had never seen before.
He held a gun.
"Come with me."
Khloe froze.
Elena stepped forward.
"Don't touch her."
The man raised the weapon.
"Elena."
She stopped.
Khloe looked between them.
"You know him."
Elena's expression changed.
"Yes."
"Who is he?"
The man smiled.
"I'm the reason your mother had to hide you."
Khloe stared.
"Who?"
He answered:
"Your mother's husband."
Elena went pale.
"That's impossible."
The man laughed.
"You told everyone I died."
He removed his glasses.
Khloe looked at Elena.
Then at the man.
Elena whispered his name.
"Giovanni."
The man who was supposed to be dead had returned.
But this time, he wasn't coming for the trust.
He was coming for his daughter.
Isabella.
And he had brought a secret that could destroy Elena's entire story.
Giovanni looked at Khloe.
"You've been lied to."
Khloe stared.
"About what?"
"Everything."
Elena stepped between them.
"Don't listen to him."
Giovanni smiled.
"She deserves the truth."
"What truth?"
He looked directly at Khloe.
"Your mother didn't give you away to save you."
Elena's face went white.
"Giovanni."
He continued.
"She gave you away because she knew what you were."
Khloe's heart stopped.
"What am I?"
Giovanni answered:
"The legal heir to an empire that was never supposed to belong to Edward Thorne."
Silence.
Khloe looked at Elena.
"Is that true?"
Elena said nothing.
Giovanni smiled.
"Ask her who owned the trust before Edward stole it."
Khloe stared.
"Who?"
Giovanni's eyes hardened.
"My family."
Outside, a black vehicle stopped.
Richard stepped out.
He looked toward the house.
Then at the man standing in the window.
Giovanni.
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.
He pulled out his phone.
"She's here."
A voice answered.
"Who?"
"Giovanni."
Silence.
Then:
"Kill him."
Richard looked toward the house.
"What about Khloe?"
The voice answered:
"Bring her alive."
Inside, Khloe looked at Elena.
"You knew."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"I knew enough."
"You knew my whole life was a lie."
"I was trying to protect you."
"You keep saying that."
Khloe's voice broke.
"But every person who says they were protecting me has destroyed something."
Elena stepped closer.
"I'm your mother."
Khloe backed away.
"Then you should have told me the truth."
Elena whispered:
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of losing you."
Khloe stared at her.
"You already did."
That sentence broke Elena.
For the first time, she looked less like a mastermind and more like a mother who had spent twenty-three years regretting one decision.
But Khloe couldn't forgive her.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
Then gunfire erupted outside.
Everyone froze.
Giovanni grabbed Khloe.
"Down!"
The windows shattered.
Security rushed into the house.
Elena screamed.
Richard's men entered through the side door.
Khloe crouched behind the table.
Giovanni pulled a weapon.
Elena looked at her daughter.
"Stay here."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
Elena looked surprised.
Khloe stood.
"I'm done being protected by lies."
She grabbed the maternity file.
"If I survive this, I'm going to find the truth."
She looked directly at Elena.
"All of it."
Then she ran toward the hidden exit.
Giovanni followed.
Elena stayed behind.
Richard entered the room seconds later.
He pointed his weapon at Elena.
"Where is she?"
Elena smiled.
"Too late."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Where?"
Elena looked toward the tunnel.
"She's gone."
Richard raised his weapon.
Then stopped.
Because a voice came through his earpiece.
Marcus.
"Richard."
Richard froze.
Marcus's voice was calm.
"I know what you did."
Richard smiled.
"You know nothing."
"I know about the six weeks."
Silence.
"I know about the DNA files."
Silence.
"I know about the forged records."
Richard's smile disappeared.
"And I know where Khloe is."
Richard looked toward the tunnel.
Marcus continued:
"And I'm coming for her."
Richard lowered the weapon.
"You won't find her."
Marcus answered:
"I already did."
At the end of the tunnel, Khloe emerged into the cold morning air.
Giovanni stood beside her.
She looked back.
The estate was disappearing behind them.
Smoke rose from the windows.
Sirens echoed in the distance.
Khloe held the maternity file against her chest.
"Who am I?"
Giovanni looked at her.
"That's the question."
"Tell me."
He hesitated.
"Not yet."
Khloe's expression hardened.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Because the truth is dangerous."
"I don't care."
Giovanni looked at her.
"You will."
A vehicle appeared at the end of the road.
Marcus stepped out.
Khloe's heart stopped.
"Marcus."
He ran toward her.
She ran toward him.
They embraced.
For a moment, everything disappeared.
The lies.
The files.
The trust.
The people hunting them.
All of it.
Marcus held her tightly.
"I found you."
Khloe whispered:
"I found something too."
"What?"
She pulled away.
"I know who my real mother is."
Marcus looked toward the burning estate.
"Elena."
Khloe nodded.
"And I know who my father is."
Marcus waited.
"Edward."
He closed his eyes.
"Then we finally know the truth."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
She opened the maternity file.
"There is one page missing."
Marcus looked at her.
"The final maternity record."
Khloe held his gaze.
"And I think Richard has it."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Then we take it from him."
Before they could move, Khloe's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a child's voice whispered:
"Mommy?"
Khloe froze.
She looked at Marcus.
The voice continued.
"Please come get me."
The call ended.
Khloe stared at the phone.
Marcus whispered:
"Who was that?"
Khloe couldn't answer.
Because she knew the voice.
She had heard it once before.
In the oldest recording from the hidden maternity file.
A baby's cry.
A child's voice.
A name written in the margin.
Clara.
And suddenly Khloe understood the final secret.
She wasn't the only child Elena had hidden.
Someone else had survived.
Someone who had been waiting for her.
Someone who had just called her Mommy.
The hunt had changed.
Khloe was no longer the woman being hunted.
May you like
She was the woman who had to find the missing child.
Before Richard did.
