Chapter 3 — The Seven-Minute Gap

Chapter 3 — The Seven-Minute Gap
At 2:17 a.m., Adrian Vale discovered the first lie the hospital had told him.
It was only seven minutes long.
Seven minutes.
That was all.
Seven minutes had disappeared from the security system between the moment Isabella Rossi entered the private wing and the moment Marcus Thorne found his wife on the floor.
Seven minutes that should have contained nothing more than a hallway, a few nurses, and an expensive private hospital suite.
Instead, those seven minutes contained the beginning of a war.
Adrian stood alone in the security control room, staring at the black rectangle on the monitor.
The timestamp jumped.
23:41:02
Then—
23:48:19
Nothing.
No transition.
No corrupted frames.
No static.
Just seven minutes that did not exist.
Daniel Price stood beside him.
"I've checked the primary server three times."
"And?"
"The footage is gone."
"Deleted?"
"Not exactly."
Adrian turned.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel pointed toward the screen.
"Someone didn't delete the files."
He paused.
"They altered the index."
Adrian frowned.
"Explain."
"The recordings are still physically stored on the server."
"Then recover them."
"We're trying."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"But whoever did this knew exactly how the hospital's archive system works."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"How many people have that level of access?"
"Four."
"Names."
Daniel hesitated.
"The hospital administrator."
"The chief of IT."
"Me."
"And?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Someone with board-level authorization."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Yourself."
Silence.
Adrian looked back at the monitor.
"I didn't authorize anything."
"I know."
"Then someone used my credentials."
Daniel nodded.
"That's what I'm afraid of."
On the thirty-second floor, Khloe woke from another restless sleep.
Her first thought was the baby.
Her second was Marcus.
He was still sitting beside her.
His tie was gone.
His shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows.
His hair was disheveled.
He looked nothing like the man who had stood beneath the chandeliers at the charity gala only hours earlier.
Khloe reached toward him.
Marcus immediately opened his eyes.
"Hey."
"You haven't slept."
"Neither have you."
She smiled weakly.
"That's different."
"How?"
"I'm the pregnant one."
He laughed softly.
"Fair point."
Khloe looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she asked:
"Did you find out who Richard is?"
Marcus's smile disappeared.
"Yes."
"And?"
"He was my father's older brother."
Khloe waited.
"Why does everyone think he died?"
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Because twenty-three years ago, his car went off a mountain road."
"And there was a body?"
"Yes."
"Then how can he be alive?"
"We don't know."
Khloe frowned.
"Marcus."
"I know."
She squeezed his hand.
"Something isn't right."
"I know."
"Someone knew about my pregnancy."
"I know."
"Someone knew where I would be."
"I know."
She looked into his eyes.
"And someone tried to erase the evidence."
Marcus became still.
"You heard about the missing footage?"
Khloe nodded.
"Adrian told me."
Marcus stood.
"I don't want you worrying about this."
Khloe's eyes hardened.
"You don't get to decide what I worry about."
"I almost lost you."
"And I almost lost our daughter."
The words hung between them.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
Khloe softened.
"I'm not trying to fight with you."
"I know."
"I'm trying to understand."
Marcus sat again.
Then he leaned closer.
"We're going to understand."
Khloe looked at him.
"Together?"
"Together."
At 3:05 a.m., Daniel finally found something.
He called Adrian.
"Come down."
"What happened?"
"I found the backup."
Adrian was downstairs within two minutes.
Daniel had connected an external drive to a restricted terminal.
The screen displayed a directory.
ARCHIVE — CAMERA 7 — PRIVATE WING
Adrian leaned forward.
"Play it."
Daniel did.
The first frame appeared.
A nurse walked down the hallway.
Another nurse followed.
Then a doctor.
Then—
Isabella.
Adrian watched her enter the suite.
The timestamp read:
23:41:02
Then the screen flickered.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"Here it comes."
The footage jumped.
But this time, instead of seven minutes of darkness—
the backup continued.
Adrian leaned closer.
The missing seven minutes appeared.
No one spoke.
The first thirty seconds showed Isabella arguing with Khloe.
The next minute showed Khloe moving toward the door.
Then Isabella blocked her.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
But then—
another person appeared.
A man.
He entered the suite.
Adrian froze.
"Stop."
Daniel paused.
The man stood beside Isabella.
His face was partially obscured.
But the silver ring on his right hand was visible.
Adrian whispered:
"Richard."
Daniel looked at him.
"You're certain?"
"Yes."
The footage resumed.
Richard spoke to Isabella.
There was no audio.
But this time, the angle was different.
His lips were visible.
Daniel leaned forward.
He replayed it.
Then again.
Finally, he said:
"He's telling her something."
"What?"
"I can't read it."
"Try."
Daniel slowed the video to one-quarter speed.
Richard spoke.
Isabella looked toward him.
Then toward Khloe.
Then back at Richard.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Adrian watched.
"What happens next?"
Richard removed something from his pocket.
A small black envelope.
He handed it to Isabella.
She opened it.
Her face went pale.
Then she looked toward Khloe's stomach.
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"What was in the envelope?"
"We can't see."
"Zoom."
Daniel did.
The image became grainy.
But the envelope had a photograph.
A photograph of a child.
Adrian stared.
"Whose child?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
Then the footage showed something even stranger.
Richard turned toward the camera.
He looked directly into it.
He smiled.
And then he raised one finger to his lips.
A gesture for silence.
The screen went black.
At 3:32 a.m., Adrian stood outside the hospital administrator's office.
He knocked once.
No answer.
He knocked again.
Still nothing.
He opened the door.
The office was empty.
But the computer was still on.
Adrian walked toward the desk.
The screen showed a security administration portal.
A login session was active.
He checked the username.
His own.
A.VALE_ADMIN
Adrian stared.
Someone had been using his credentials.
He opened the activity log.
The last login:
23:37:14
Seven minutes before the footage disappeared.
Adrian's heart began beating faster.
He checked the IP address.
Internal network.
He traced the terminal.
The location appeared.
PRIVATE EXECUTIVE FLOOR
Adrian frowned.
The private executive floor was not connected to the security office.
He called Daniel.
"Can you trace terminal 14?"
Daniel answered:
"Already did."
"Where?"
A pause.
"Room 3208."
Adrian froze.
"Who's in 3208?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Your nephew."
Adrian stared at the hallway.
"Marcus?"
"No."
Daniel hesitated.
"Richard."
Adrian ran.
He reached the private executive floor within minutes.
Two security officers followed.
Room 3208 was locked.
Adrian tried the handle.
Nothing.
"Open it."
The security officer used a master key.
The door swung inward.
The room was empty.
No Richard.
No computer.
No files.
Only a chair.
A table.
And a hospital badge lying on the floor.
Adrian picked it up.
The name read:
DR. ELLIOT VANE
He stared.
Daniel arrived behind him.
"Who is that?"
Adrian shook his head.
"I don't know."
Daniel looked at the badge.
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"Dr. Vane died six years ago."
At 4:11 a.m., Marcus received another anonymous message.
This time, there was no photograph.
Only a video.
He opened it.
A dark room appeared.
A man sat in a chair.
Richard.
He looked older than the man in the security footage.
But unmistakably alive.
He stared into the camera.
"Marcus."
Marcus froze.
Richard continued.
"You're probably wondering why I came back."
Marcus said nothing.
"You think this is about your wife."
Richard smiled.
"It's not."
He leaned forward.
"It's about your daughter."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Leave my family alone."
Richard shook his head.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because she is the reason your father died."
Marcus stopped breathing.
"What?"
Richard's expression became serious.
"Your father didn't die in an accident."
Marcus stared at the screen.
"He was murdered."
The video ended.
Marcus immediately called Adrian.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
He called Daniel.
Nothing.
Finally, he called the hospital administrator.
"Where is my uncle?"
"We don't know."
Marcus stood.
"What?"
"He left the building."
"When?"
"About fifteen minutes ago."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"Where?"
"We don't know."
At 4:23 a.m., Khloe woke again.
Marcus was gone.
Her heart began racing.
She pressed the nurse call button.
A nurse entered.
"Mrs. Thorne?"
"Where's my husband?"
"He stepped out."
"When?"
"About ten minutes ago."
Khloe frowned.
"Did he say where?"
"No."
She looked toward the door.
Something felt wrong.
Then she noticed the hallway outside her room.
A security officer stood there.
He wasn't wearing the hospital's standard uniform.
Khloe watched him.
He looked at her.
Then looked away.
She pressed the nurse button again.
"Who is that?"
The nurse glanced outside.
"I don't know."
Khloe's instincts screamed.
"Lock the door."
The nurse froze.
"Mrs. Thorne?"
"Lock it."
The nurse immediately closed the door.
A second later—
someone tried the handle.
Once.
Twice.
The nurse stepped backward.
Khloe's hand moved to her stomach.
The baby kicked.
Hard.
The handle stopped moving.
Then footsteps disappeared down the hallway.
Khloe stared at the door.
The nurse whispered:
"Should I call security?"
Khloe nodded.
"Yes."
At the same time, Marcus was running through the underground parking garage.
He had received another message.
COME TO THE OLD EAST WING. ALONE.
He ignored the instruction.
He brought two private security officers.
When they reached the old wing, the corridor was empty.
Marcus looked around.
"Richard!"
His voice echoed.
No answer.
Then a phone rang.
Marcus turned.
An old hospital telephone sat on a desk.
He picked it up.
"Hello?"
Richard's voice answered.
"You brought security."
"Of course."
"You always were cautious."
"What do you want?"
"I want you to understand."
"Understand what?"
"Your family has been lying to you."
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"You killed my father."
"No."
"Then who did?"
Silence.
Then Richard said:
"Ask Adrian."
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at the phone.
Something was wrong.
He turned toward his security team.
"Get me back upstairs."
At 4:41 a.m., Adrian returned to the security control room.
Daniel was waiting.
"We found something else."
"What?"
"The seven-minute gap wasn't created tonight."
Adrian stopped.
"What?"
"It existed in the system before the attack."
"How long?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Twenty-three years."
Adrian's face went pale.
"You're saying..."
"The same seven-minute gap appears in archived footage from the night Richard supposedly died."
Adrian stared at the screen.
Daniel opened the old file.
A date appeared.
October 17, 2003.
The night of the accident.
The camera footage showed the hospital entrance.
An injured Daniel Thorne was brought inside.
Victoria arrived minutes later.
Edward arrived.
Doctors rushed around.
Then—
seven minutes disappeared.
Adrian whispered:
"That's impossible."
Daniel shook his head.
"Look."
The footage resumed.
A stretcher was being pushed through the hallway.
A body was covered by a sheet.
A doctor signed a form.
Then Richard appeared.
Alive.
Walking.
No injuries.
Adrian stared.
"That's him."
Daniel nodded.
"He was at the hospital that night."
"Then the accident wasn't what we were told."
"No."
Daniel pointed at the timestamp.
"And look who entered the hospital immediately after him."
A woman appeared on screen.
Young.
Elegant.
Frightened.
Adrian knew her.
"Victoria."
At 5:03 a.m., Marcus returned to Khloe's room.
The door was locked.
He stopped.
"Khloe?"
No answer.
He knocked.
"Khloe!"
The nurse opened the door from inside.
Marcus rushed in.
"Are you okay?"
Khloe looked at him.
"Where were you?"
"I had to—"
She raised her hand.
"Don't."
Marcus stopped.
"There was a man outside."
His expression changed.
"What man?"
"I don't know."
"Did you see his face?"
"No."
"Did he touch you?"
"No."
Marcus exhaled.
"Thank God."
Khloe looked at him.
"Marcus."
"Yes?"
"I think someone is trying to scare me."
Marcus sat beside her.
"They won't get near you."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"They already did."
She touched her stomach.
"They don't need to touch me again."
Marcus looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"They know that hurting me scares you."
He understood.
"They're trying to make me vulnerable."
"Exactly."
Khloe looked into his eyes.
"And they're trying to make you angry."
Marcus became silent.
"Because an angry man makes mistakes."
At 5:17 a.m., Adrian walked into the room.
Marcus stood.
"What did you find?"
Adrian looked at Khloe.
Then Marcus.
"The seven-minute gap isn't new."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"It existed twenty-three years ago."
Marcus stared at him.
"On the night Richard died."
Adrian nodded.
"Richard was at the hospital that night."
Marcus's face went cold.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"And my father?"
"Your father was brought here after the accident."
"Then who died?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who?"
Adrian looked toward Khloe.
"I don't know yet."
Khloe whispered:
"But someone does."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Adrian looked at the door.
"Victoria."
Marcus froze.
His mother's name hung in the room.
For twenty-three years, Victoria Thorne had told her son that Richard died in an accident.
She had told him the family had moved on.
She had told him his father died years later from grief.
She had told him there were no secrets left.
But the seven-minute gap proved one thing.
Someone had rewritten history.
And the person who knew how to do it had been standing inside the Thorne family all along.
At 5:31 a.m., the hospital's main security system suddenly shut down.
Every monitor went black.
Every electronic lock released.
The lights flickered.
The nurses screamed.
Marcus immediately stood.
"What's happening?"
Adrian pulled out his phone.
"No signal."
The emergency lights came on.
Then a single monitor beside Khloe's bed turned back on.
A message appeared.
Black background.
White letters.
SEVEN MINUTES WAS ALL IT TOOK TO CHANGE YOUR FAMILY.
Marcus stared.
Another line appeared.
NEXT TIME, IT WILL TAKE LESS.
Khloe grabbed his hand.
"Marcus."
The screen went black.
Then the hospital alarm sounded.
A nurse rushed into the room.
"Mr. Thorne!"
"What?"
"We've lost contact with the neonatal unit."
Marcus's blood ran cold.
"What do you mean?"
"The monitoring system is down."
Adrian looked at him.
"Stay here."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"Marcus—"
"I'm not leaving her."
He looked at Khloe.
Then toward the hallway.
"Whatever happens next, we stay together."
Outside the room, footsteps echoed.
Slow.
Measured.
Approaching.
And somewhere in the darkness, a man who had supposedly died twenty-three years ago was smiling.
Because the seven-minute gap had not been a mistake.
May you like
It had been a message.
And the next seven minutes were about to change everything.
