Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Lied

Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Lied
At 5:12 in the morning, Isabella Rossi learned that a lie could survive only as long as nobody looked closely enough.
She had spent years perfecting the art.
A trembling hand.
A lowered gaze.
A carefully timed tear.
A soft voice when everyone else was shouting.
People trusted women who looked frightened.
They especially trusted beautiful women who looked frightened.
Isabella knew that.
She had built her entire life around it.
But there was one thing she had forgotten.
The truth did not need to look convincing.
It only needed to exist.
And somewhere inside the hospital's security system, the truth was sitting on a server.
Waiting.
The detective entered the consultation room carrying a tablet.
Isabella's lawyer stood immediately.
"Detective, my client has already given her statement."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
The detective placed the tablet on the table.
"Because we have additional evidence."
Isabella looked at the screen.
She didn't touch it.
"What evidence?"
The detective pressed play.
The footage appeared.
Khloe entering the suite.
Isabella entering behind her.
The argument.
The push.
The second attack.
The kick.
Khloe falling.
Isabella standing over her.
The room became silent.
The video ended.
The detective looked at Isabella.
"Would you like to revise your statement?"
Isabella's lawyer answered first.
"My client maintains that she acted in self-defense."
The detective looked at him.
"Against what?"
"My client was threatened."
"The footage shows otherwise."
"Security footage without audio doesn't establish what happened immediately before the physical contact."
The detective nodded.
"That's true."
Isabella's lawyer smiled faintly.
"But the footage does establish that Ms. Rossi struck Mrs. Thorne."
"Yes."
"Which is unfortunate."
He looked at Isabella.
"But not necessarily criminal if she was responding to an imminent threat."
The detective's expression didn't change.
"You may want to watch the footage again."
He pressed play.
This time he stopped it before Isabella attacked.
He zoomed in.
Khloe was standing beside the table.
Her hands were visible.
Empty.
Isabella was facing her.
Her right hand was already raised.
The detective pointed at the screen.
"Mrs. Thorne's hands never touched your client."
Isabella said nothing.
"Your client, however, was already moving toward her."
Her lawyer leaned back.
He no longer looked comfortable.
The detective continued.
"And there is something else."
He changed the file.
A different camera appeared.
The hallway.
Isabella entering the suite.
Then stopping.
Looking toward the ceiling.
Looking directly at the security camera.
The detective paused.
"Why did you look at the camera?"
Isabella swallowed.
"I didn't."
"You did."
"I was disoriented."
"You looked directly at it."
"I don't remember."
The detective watched her.
"That's interesting."
On the thirty-second floor, Khloe was awake.
The pain had subsided.
But every time she closed her eyes, she saw Isabella's heel.
She could still feel the impact.
She could still hear the glass breaking.
She could still remember the moment her body hit the marble.
Her hand moved to her stomach.
A small movement answered beneath her palm.
Khloe began crying.
Not from pain.
From relief.
"She's moving."
Marcus looked up from the chair beside the bed.
He had not slept.
He stood immediately.
"Are you sure?"
Khloe nodded.
"Yes."
He placed his hand over hers.
A few seconds passed.
Then he felt it.
A tiny movement.
So faint that another person might have missed it.
Marcus didn't.
His face changed.
"She's stubborn."
Khloe laughed softly through her tears.
"She gets that from you."
Marcus leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"She gets everything good from you."
For a few seconds, they were simply husband and wife.
No cameras.
No lawyers.
No Isabella.
No family secrets.
Just two frightened parents waiting for their child.
Then the door opened.
Adrian walked in.
Marcus straightened.
"What happened?"
Adrian looked at Khloe.
"How are you feeling?"
"Tired."
"Any pain?"
"Not much."
Adrian nodded.
Then he looked at Marcus.
"We need to talk."
Marcus immediately understood.
"About Richard?"
Khloe looked between them.
"Who is Richard?"
Adrian hesitated.
Marcus looked at him.
"Tell her."
Adrian pulled a chair closer.
"There is a man named Richard Thorne."
Khloe frowned.
"The family?"
"Yes."
"Who is he?"
Adrian's face hardened.
"Marcus's uncle."
Marcus added quietly:
"Everyone believes he died twenty-three years ago."
Khloe stared at them.
"And you saw him?"
Adrian nodded.
"On the camera."
Silence filled the room.
Khloe looked toward the door.
"Is he connected to Isabella?"
"We don't know."
Adrian paused.
"But he was in this hospital shortly before the attack."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Which means Isabella may not have been acting alone."
Khloe looked down at her stomach.
"What does he want?"
Adrian answered:
"That's what we're going to find out."
At 6:03 a.m., Isabella's father arrived.
Giovanni Rossi entered the hospital with two attorneys and the expression of a man who had spent his entire life solving problems with money.
He walked into the consultation room.
His daughter looked up.
"Dad."
He didn't hug her.
He didn't ask whether she was frightened.
He simply stared at her.
"What did you do?"
Isabella's eyes widened.
"I didn't—"
"Don't lie to me."
Her father slammed a newspaper onto the table.
The headline read:
BILLIONAIRE'S PREGNANT WIFE ATTACKED AT PRIVATE CHARITY EVENT
The story had already begun spreading online.
Someone had leaked the incident.
Giovanni looked at her.
"Did you touch her?"
Isabella remained silent.
"Isabella."
"She provoked me."
His eyes closed.
"That's not what I asked."
"Yes."
"You attacked her?"
"Yes."
Giovanni stared at his daughter.
For the first time, Isabella looked like a child again.
"Why?"
She whispered:
"Because she took him."
Giovanni's expression changed.
"You were never supposed to marry Marcus."
"I know."
"You were never supposed to have his child."
"I know."
"And yet you attacked her in a hospital."
Isabella looked away.
Giovanni lowered his voice.
"Who told you to do it?"
Isabella froze.
Her father noticed.
"Who?"
"No one."
"Don't lie."
"I said no one."
Giovanni leaned closer.
"Isabella, if someone told you to do this, you tell me now."
She looked at him.
For a moment, she almost answered.
Then she remembered the message she had received the night before.
One sentence.
If you fail, your father pays the price.
She lowered her eyes.
"I did it myself."
Giovanni knew immediately that she was lying.
But he didn't push.
Not yet.
Because his phone had just received a message.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Then he walked out of the room.
The message contained one photograph.
It showed Richard Thorne standing outside the hospital.
Underneath it were six words:
SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHO SHE WORKS FOR.
Giovanni stared at the photograph.
Then deleted it.
At 7:30, the story exploded.
Television networks were broadcasting outside the hospital.
Reporters crowded the entrance.
Somebody had leaked the identity of Isabella.
Others had leaked her relationship with Marcus years earlier.
Within an hour, social media had created two versions of the story.
In one, Isabella was a jealous woman who had attacked a pregnant billionaire's wife.
In the other, Khloe was portrayed as a manipulative heiress who had staged the entire incident.
The second version spread faster.
Marcus watched it on his phone.
His expression darkened.
"Someone is feeding them information."
Adrian nodded.
"False information."
"Who?"
"We don't know."
Marcus looked at Khloe.
She was asleep.
"We need to find out."
The hospital's legal department began receiving calls.
Three major news networks demanded access to security footage.
Two attorneys representing Isabella threatened lawsuits.
A senator who had attended the gala issued a statement calling for "a fair investigation."
Then an anonymous account uploaded a photograph of Khloe and Isabella arguing earlier that evening.
The caption read:
What really happened before the attack?
Marcus stared at it.
"That's from the gala."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Who took it?"
"Someone close enough to hear the conversation."
Marcus zoomed in.
Behind the women, a waiter stood holding a tray.
He was looking directly at the camera.
Marcus frowned.
"That's not a waiter."
Adrian looked closer.
"No."
It was a security officer.
One Marcus had never seen before.
Adrian immediately called Daniel.
"Find the man in this photograph."
Daniel answered:
"We're already looking."
"How long?"
"Give me ten minutes."
"Give me five."
Six minutes later, Daniel called back.
"We have a name."
Adrian put the phone on speaker.
"Who?"
"Peter Hale."
Marcus frowned.
"Employee?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"He was contracted by the gala."
"Security?"
"That's what his paperwork says."
Adrian's voice hardened.
"Where is he now?"
"Not here."
"Find him."
"We're trying."
Marcus stood.
"Do it."
Daniel paused.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"His credentials were issued yesterday."
Adrian looked at Marcus.
"Yesterday?"
"Yes."
"By whom?"
Daniel answered:
"The event coordinator."
Everyone looked toward the door.
Elaine.
Elaine entered ten minutes later.
She looked exhausted.
Marcus approached her.
"Did you hire Peter Hale?"
Elaine's face changed.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He was recommended."
"By whom?"
"I don't remember."
Marcus stared at her.
"Elaine."
She looked down.
"An assistant sent me his information."
"Which assistant?"
Elaine hesitated.
"Melissa."
"Last name?"
"Grant."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Melissa Grant doesn't work for the foundation."
Elaine looked confused.
"She did."
"When?"
"Three months ago."
Adrian exchanged a glance with Marcus.
"She was fired."
Elaine nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Elaine swallowed.
"She was accessing confidential guest information."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Whose information?"
Elaine looked at him.
"Yours."
That was the first real crack.
Not Isabella.
Not Richard.
Not even the attack.
The information leak.
Someone had been monitoring Marcus and Khloe for months.
Someone knew their schedules.
Their hospital appointments.
Their travel plans.
Their charity events.
Their private meetings.
And someone had arranged for an unknown security contractor to be inside the building the night Khloe was attacked.
Marcus walked toward the window.
"What was Melissa looking for?"
Elaine answered quietly.
"Your family trust."
Marcus turned.
"What?"
"She was searching for information about the Thorne Family Trust."
Khloe opened her eyes.
"The trust?"
Everyone turned.
She pushed herself slightly higher against the pillows.
"What trust?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Khloe..."
"No."
She looked at Adrian.
"What trust?"
Adrian was silent.
Khloe's voice became firmer.
"Why does everyone keep looking at me like I don't know something?"
Marcus sat beside her.
"There are family financial arrangements you don't need to worry about right now."
Khloe stared at him.
"Someone attacked me because I was pregnant."
Marcus said nothing.
"Someone knew my hospital room."
Silence.
"Someone may have been tracking me for months."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"And now you're telling me there is a family trust involved?"
Marcus reached for her hand.
"I didn't want to frighten you."
"You already frightened me."
She looked away.
"I almost lost my baby."
Marcus lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Khloe looked at him again.
"Tell me everything."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Not here."
Khloe frowned.
"Why?"
"Because we don't know who is listening."
At that exact moment, outside the room, a nurse stopped beside the door.
She stood there for three seconds.
Then walked away.
Nobody noticed.
Except the security camera.
At noon, Isabella's lawyer returned.
He placed a folder in front of her.
"There's a problem."
Isabella looked up.
"What?"
"The footage."
"I know."
"No."
He opened the folder.
"The footage isn't the only evidence."
Isabella's expression changed.
"What else?"
"Medical records."
"What about them?"
"Your client accessed Khloe's medical information three weeks ago."
Isabella's face went pale.
"I didn't."
"The login came from your phone."
"I never—"
He held up his hand.
"Don't answer yet."
He looked at her.
"Because there's another problem."
"What?"
"The person who used your phone that night wasn't you."
Isabella stared.
"Then who?"
Her lawyer slowly removed a photograph.
It showed Isabella's phone sitting on a table.
Beside it was a man's hand.
A distinctive silver ring was visible.
Isabella recognized it immediately.
Her face drained of color.
"No."
Her lawyer watched her carefully.
"Who is he?"
Isabella whispered:
"Richard."
At 2:15 p.m., Marcus received a call.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
Older.
Calm.
"You don't remember me."
Marcus froze.
"Who is this?"
"You were a boy when we last met."
Marcus's heart began beating faster.
"Richard?"
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
"You always were your father's son."
Marcus stood.
"Where are you?"
"Closer than you think."
"What do you want?"
"Your wife."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"You stay away from her."
"I don't want to hurt her."
"Then why were you here?"
A pause.
"Because she has something that belongs to me."
"What?"
Another pause.
"The child."
Marcus gripped the phone.
"You come near my family again, and you'll regret it."
Richard laughed softly.
"You still don't understand."
"Understand what?"
"The child isn't just your heir."
Marcus froze.
"What are you talking about?"
Richard's voice dropped.
"Ask your uncle about the trust."
The call ended.
Marcus stood motionless.
Adrian watched him.
"What did he say?"
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
"He knows about the baby."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"What exactly?"
"He said the child isn't just my heir."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Marcus stepped toward him.
"You know something."
Adrian said nothing.
"Uncle."
Silence.
"What don't I know?"
Adrian finally looked at him.
"The trust was created before your father died."
"Why?"
"To protect the next generation."
"From whom?"
Adrian's eyes moved toward Khloe's room.
"From your family."
Marcus stared at him.
"My family?"
Adrian nodded.
"Not everyone in it."
"Who?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then:
"Richard."
That evening, Isabella was transferred to another secure room.
She had stopped crying.
She had stopped pretending.
She sat alone, staring at the floor.
Her father entered.
He closed the door behind him.
"Richard contacted you."
Isabella looked up.
Giovanni's face was grim.
"How did you know?"
"He contacted me too."
Isabella's eyes widened.
"What did he say?"
"Nothing."
Giovanni walked closer.
"He sent me a photograph."
"Of what?"
"Your mother."
Isabella froze.
Her mother had been dead for eleven years.
Giovanni placed the photograph on the table.
Isabella stared at it.
Her mother stood outside a building.
Alive.
Healthy.
And beside her—
Richard Thorne.
Isabella's breathing stopped.
"No."
Her father whispered:
"That's what I said."
Isabella picked up the photograph with shaking hands.
On the back was a handwritten message.
You thought I was using you.
I was protecting you.
Now protect me.
Isabella stared at the words.
For the first time since the attack, she looked genuinely terrified.
Because she finally understood something.
She had never been the mastermind.
She had never been in control.
She had been manipulated from the beginning.
And the man behind everything knew exactly which secret would make her obey.
Across the city, Marcus stood beside Khloe's hospital bed.
She was sleeping again.
His hand rested gently over hers.
He looked at the security monitor Adrian had brought into the room.
The footage played silently.
Isabella entering.
Khloe backing away.
The attack.
The fall.
The broken glass.
Then the unknown man entering the corridor.
Marcus watched him.
The image paused.
He zoomed in.
The silver ring.
The face.
Richard.
Then he noticed something.
Richard wasn't looking at Khloe's room.
He was looking directly at the camera.
As if he knew someone would eventually watch the footage.
Marcus stared at the frozen image.
Then he noticed Richard's lips moving.
He rewound.
Played it again.
Slower.
Again.
This time Marcus understood the words.
Richard was speaking to the camera.
Four words.
Tell Marcus I came back.
Marcus's blood ran cold.
May you like
And somewhere across the city, Richard Thorne smiled.
Because the game had finally begun.
