Chapter 11 — The Father’s Last Secret

Chapter 11 — The Father’s Last Secret
The word Mommy continued to echo inside Khloe's head long after the call ended.
She stood beside the black SUV, staring at her phone.
Marcus was watching her.
"So was that real?"
Khloe swallowed.
"I don't know."
"You recognized the voice."
"I've heard it before."
"Where?"
"In the recording."
Marcus's expression tightened.
"The baby."
Khloe nodded.
"Clara."
Giovanni stood several feet away.
His face had gone pale.
Khloe noticed.
"You know that name."
He didn't answer.
"Giovanni."
He looked at her.
"Yes."
"Who is Clara?"
He lowered his eyes.
"The person your father spent twenty-three years trying to hide."
Khloe's heart sank.
"My father?"
"Edward."
Marcus stepped closer.
"What did he do?"
Giovanni looked toward the burning estate.
"Something worse than stealing an empire."
They drove until sunrise.
Nobody spoke.
Khloe sat beside Marcus in the back seat.
The maternity file rested on her lap.
The first pages were already familiar.
Her original birth record.
Elena's name.
Edward's name.
The altered records.
But the missing final page had become an obsession.
Because somewhere inside that missing page was the answer to the child's voice.
When they stopped at a safe house, Khloe immediately turned to Giovanni.
"You owe me the truth."
He nodded.
"I know."
"Then start with Clara."
Giovanni sat across from her.
"Clara was born six months after you."
Khloe froze.
"To whom?"
"Elena."
"No."
Giovanni nodded.
"Yes."
"That means she's my sister."
"Half-sister."
Khloe stared.
"Then why was she hidden?"
Giovanni's expression became grim.
"Because Edward discovered something about her."
"What?"
"She wasn't just another heir."
Marcus frowned.
"Then what was she?"
Giovanni looked at him.
"She was proof."
"Proof of what?"
"That Edward's entire succession system was fraudulent."
Giovanni explained what he knew.
Edward had created the Thorne trust decades earlier.
He claimed it was built from his own fortune.
It wasn't.
The original capital had come from the Rossi family.
Edward had married into the family, gained access to their holdings, and slowly transferred ownership into companies he controlled.
The trust was never entirely his.
But he had buried the evidence.
Then Clara was born.
And her birth created a problem.
Because Edward had promised Elena that any child she had would receive a portion of the Rossi assets.
He refused.
Elena threatened to expose him.
Edward threatened to take the children.
The conflict ended with Khloe disappearing.
Then Clara.
Giovanni looked at Khloe.
"You were hidden first."
"Where?"
"With Sarah."
"And Clara?"
He hesitated.
"With me."
Khloe's eyes widened.
"You raised her?"
"For three years."
"Then what happened?"
"Edward found us."
Giovanni's voice became quieter.
"He came to the house at night."
"I tried to escape."
"I failed."
"He took Clara."
Khloe covered her mouth.
"What happened to her?"
"I don't know."
"You lost her?"
"No."
Giovanni looked at her.
"Edward made me believe she was dead."
Marcus frowned.
"Why would he do that?"
"Because he needed me to stop searching."
Khloe whispered:
"And you did?"
Giovanni shook his head.
"I spent twenty years searching."
"Then why did you disappear?"
"Because Edward had people everywhere."
He looked at Marcus.
"Even inside your family."
Marcus understood.
"Richard."
Giovanni nodded.
"Richard wasn't merely Edward's employee."
"He was his fixer."
"He erased records."
"He moved money."
"He arranged disappearances."
"And he protected the trust."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Then why didn't my father kill him?"
Giovanni laughed bitterly.
"Because Richard knew where every body was buried."
Khloe looked down at the maternity file.
"Then why did Edward keep me alive?"
Giovanni answered immediately.
"Because you were the first heir."
"And Clara?"
"She was the second."
Marcus frowned.
"Then why was Isabella involved?"
Giovanni looked at him.
"Because Edward needed a decoy."
Khloe's eyes narrowed.
"Isabella."
"Yes."
"She was never supposed to inherit."
"No."
"She was supposed to look like the heir."
"Exactly."
Khloe suddenly understood why Isabella had been so aggressively pushed into Marcus's life.
Why Elena had encouraged the obsession.
Why the trust documents had repeatedly mentioned her.
Why people wanted Marcus married to Isabella.
She had been the perfect distraction.
A false heir protecting the real secret.
But there was still one question.
"Why did Isabella attack me?"
Giovanni looked away.
"Because she believed you were going to take everything."
Khloe shook her head.
"She knew I was pregnant."
"Yes."
"She knew the child mattered."
"Yes."
"Then why?"
Giovanni's voice was low.
"Because Elena told her the baby was a threat."
Marcus stood.
"Enough."
Everyone looked at him.
"My wife was attacked."
His voice was cold.
"I don't care what Elena believed."
"I don't care what Isabella feared."
"Someone tried to kill my family."
Giovanni nodded.
"And that's why Edward's last secret matters."
Marcus frowned.
"What secret?"
Giovanni reached inside his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
It was yellowed with age.
The seal was broken.
Across the front was written:
FOR MY SON, IF I FAIL.
Marcus stared.
"My father wrote that?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"The week before the accident."
Marcus took it.
His hands trembled.
He opened it.
The letter began:
Marcus,
If you are reading this, then someone has finally succeeded in making you believe the wrong person is your enemy.
Marcus stopped.
Khloe leaned closer.
He continued.
Your greatest inheritance is not money. It is the truth.
I stole from people who trusted me.
I lied to women who loved me.
And I built a family empire on a foundation that was never mine.
Marcus's face hardened.
Edward was confessing.
Page after page.
Names.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Bribes.
Forged documents.
And then one sentence:
The Rossi family owns the original trust.
Khloe stared.
"Then the empire belongs to them."
Giovanni shook his head.
"Not entirely."
Marcus turned the page.
There was a second document.
A legal transfer.
Edward had signed over controlling ownership.
Not to Elena.
Not to Giovanni.
Not to Marcus.
To Khloe.
Marcus whispered:
"Your father gave you the company."
Khloe looked stunned.
"When?"
"Before you were born."
Then Marcus noticed the date.
It was dated two weeks before his own birth.
That meant Edward had already planned everything.
Khloe wasn't Plan B.
She was the original heir.
Marcus was the contingency.
Isabella was the decoy.
And Richard was the man who had been waiting to control whoever survived.
The safe house door suddenly rattled.
Everyone froze.
Giovanni reached for his weapon.
Marcus stepped in front of Khloe.
A voice came from outside.
"Marcus."
Detective Harris.
Marcus opened the door.
Harris entered.
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"Richard knows you're here."
Marcus cursed.
"How?"
Harris held up his phone.
"Because someone inside the police department is feeding him information."
Khloe's expression changed.
"Then we can't trust the police."
"Not all of them."
"Who can we trust?"
Harris looked at Giovanni.
"Nobody."
Then Harris placed a photograph on the table.
It showed a woman entering a private clinic.
Khloe recognized her.
"Isabella."
Harris nodded.
"She came forward."
"Why?"
"She says she knows where Clara is."
Khloe's heart jumped.
"Where?"
Harris looked at her.
"She won't tell anyone except you."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
Khloe looked at him.
"I have to go."
"Absolutely not."
"Marcus."
"We don't know if it's a trap."
"It could be."
"Then you don't go."
Khloe stepped closer.
"If Clara is alive, she's my sister."
Marcus stared at her.
"And if Isabella is lying?"
"Then I'll know."
He didn't answer.
Khloe took his hand.
"I spent my entire life being protected by secrets."
She looked into his eyes.
"I'm done."
They met Isabella in an abandoned church.
She stood alone beneath the broken stained-glass windows.
Her red dress was gone.
She wore a gray coat.
She looked exhausted.
Marcus stayed close to Khloe.
Isabella looked at her.
"I know you hate me."
Khloe didn't answer.
"You should."
Isabella's voice broke.
"What I did was unforgivable."
Khloe's eyes hardened.
"Then why are you here?"
"Because Elena lied to me."
"About what?"
"Everything."
Isabella looked toward Marcus.
"Your father wasn't my father."
Marcus stared.
"I know."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
She pulled out a document.
"Edward wasn't my biological father."
Khloe frowned.
"Then who was?"
Isabella looked at Giovanni.
"His brother."
Giovanni's face changed.
"What?"
Isabella continued.
"Edward had a brother."
Marcus stared.
"My father had no brother."
"That's what he wanted everyone to believe."
She handed Khloe the document.
"His name was Daniel Thorne."
Marcus read the page.
The signature was unmistakable.
Edward's.
Daniel Thorne — beneficiary of original Thorne-Rossi trust.
Marcus looked at Giovanni.
"Why didn't you tell us?"
Giovanni's expression was grim.
"Because Daniel died before you were born."
Isabella shook her head.
"No."
She whispered:
"He didn't."
Everyone went silent.
Isabella pulled out another photograph.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Standing beside Edward.
Marcus stared.
He knew the face.
Not personally.
But from an old family portrait.
"That's Daniel."
Isabella nodded.
"He survived the accident."
Khloe whispered:
"Then where is he?"
Isabella looked directly at her.
"Closer than you think."
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from Giovanni's pocket.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice came through.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Giovanni."
Giovanni's face drained of color.
"Daniel?"
A quiet laugh.
"You finally found them."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who is this?"
The voice answered:
"Your uncle."
Marcus froze.
Daniel continued:
"And I have something your father spent twenty-three years trying to destroy."
"What?"
"The original maternity file."
Khloe's heart stopped.
Daniel's voice softened.
"The missing page."
She gripped Marcus's hand.
"Where are you?"
Daniel answered:
"At the place where your father hid the truth."
"Where?"
"The old Thorne mausoleum."
The call ended.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
She was already moving.
The mausoleum stood on private land outside the city.
The gate had been abandoned for years.
Inside, candles burned.
A figure waited beside a stone coffin.
An elderly man.
Gray hair.
Straight posture.
Sharp eyes.
Marcus stopped.
The man looked at him.
"You have your father's eyes."
Marcus whispered:
"Daniel."
The man nodded.
"Yes."
Khloe stepped forward.
"You have the maternity file."
Daniel looked at her.
"I do."
"Give it to me."
He shook his head.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because once you read it, there is no going back."
Khloe's voice was steady.
"I've already lost everything."
"No."
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"You've gained the one thing Edward never had."
"What?"
"The chance to choose your family."
He opened a small wooden box.
Inside was the missing page.
Khloe reached for it.
Then Daniel stopped her.
"Before you read it, understand one thing."
"What?"
"Your mother didn't abandon you."
Khloe nodded.
"I know."
"No."
Daniel's eyes were full of sorrow.
"You don't."
He handed her the page.
Khloe unfolded it.
Her eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
Her face went completely white.
Marcus took a step toward her.
"Khloe?"
She couldn't speak.
"What does it say?"
Khloe looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"Clara isn't my sister."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
Khloe handed him the page.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
The child called Clara was never Elena's daughter.
Marcus read the next line.
His blood ran cold.
She was Marcus's daughter.
He looked up.
Khloe was crying.
Daniel closed his eyes.
And the final truth of Edward Thorne's last secret emerged:
Twenty-three years earlier, Marcus had unknowingly fathered a child before he was old enough to remember the night.
That child had been hidden.
Her identity erased.
Her existence used as leverage.
And the voice on the phone calling Khloe Mommy was not Clara.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been waiting all these years to be found.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
"Then who is she?"
Daniel's answer was barely audible.
"Your unborn child's older sister."
Silence.
Marcus stared at him.
"That's impossible."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He pointed to the final line of the document.
The child survived the accident.
Then he looked toward the dark entrance of the mausoleum.
"And Richard has her."
Khloe's blood ran cold.
Marcus reached for his weapon.
Daniel whispered:
"Now you understand why Edward's last secret had to remain buried."
Outside, a car engine roared to life.
Headlights flooded the mausoleum.
Someone had found them.
And from the darkness came Richard's voice.
"Give me Khloe."
Marcus stepped in front of her.
Richard laughed.
"Or the girl dies."
The lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the mausoleum.
May you like
And when the emergency lights flickered back on—
Daniel was gone.
