Chapter 12 — The Family War

Chapter 12 — The Family War
The gunshot echoed through the mausoleum.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Khloe screamed.
"Daniel!"
Marcus grabbed her and pulled her behind the stone coffin.
Another shot struck the wall.
Stone exploded beside them.
"Stay down!"
Marcus drew his weapon.
Detective Harris and Giovanni returned fire from opposite sides of the chamber.
Richard's men were everywhere.
But Richard himself was nowhere to be seen.
That frightened Marcus more than the gunfire.
He knew Richard.
Richard never entered a room unless he already knew how he was going to leave it.
Marcus looked toward the doorway.
"He's after the file."
Khloe held the maternity document against her chest.
"I still have it."
"Good."
"Marcus..."
"What?"
"The girl."
He looked at her.
"If Richard really has her—"
"I know."
"We have to find her."
"We will."
Another shot cracked through the darkness.
Marcus pushed Khloe farther behind the coffin.
"Not until we survive this."
The gunfire lasted less than two minutes.
It felt like an hour.
Then silence.
Marcus waited.
Nothing.
Harris slowly raised his head.
"Clear."
Giovanni stood.
"Where's Daniel?"
Nobody answered.
The old man had vanished.
The wooden box was gone.
So was the original maternity file.
Khloe looked down at her hands.
Only one torn corner remained.
Marcus picked it up.
There was a handwritten number on the back.
17.
He stared at it.
"The same number as the hidden room."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
She pointed to the ink.
"This isn't a room number."
"Then what is it?"
She turned the paper over.
At the bottom was a date.
July 17.
Marcus's expression changed.
"That's the date of the accident."
Khloe nodded.
"The accident that supposedly killed Daniel."
Giovanni looked toward the empty doorway.
"Then he knew this was coming."
They escaped through an underground passage.
The tunnel led into the forest behind the mausoleum.
Rain had begun falling.
Khloe barely noticed.
She was still thinking about the document.
The child.
The voice.
The impossible story surrounding her own birth.
Marcus walked beside her.
"Look at me."
She did.
"We don't know that Richard has the girl."
"The recording—"
"Could have been fabricated."
"The voice sounded real."
"I know."
Khloe stopped.
"What if it's true?"
Marcus turned.
"Then we find her."
"And if she really is connected to you?"
His expression softened.
"Then she's still innocent."
Khloe looked down.
"Everyone keeps turning children into weapons."
"Not us."
She looked at him.
"We're going to end this."
Marcus nodded.
"Together."
They reached the vehicle.
Harris was already there.
He had received a message.
His face was grim.
"What?"
"The hospital."
Marcus immediately became alert.
"What happened?"
"Someone broke into the maternity records department."
"Richard?"
"Probably."
"Was anything stolen?"
Harris nodded.
"Everything relating to Khloe."
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"Only Khloe?"
Harris hesitated.
"No."
He handed Marcus a photograph.
A medical record.
The name had been partially destroyed.
But one word remained.
INFANT — FEMALE.
And beneath it:
ADMITTED AFTER VEHICLE ACCIDENT — JULY 17.
Khloe stared.
"That's her."
Harris nodded.
"Maybe."
Marcus looked at the date.
"Where was the accident?"
Harris answered:
"The same place Daniel supposedly died."
Khloe closed her eyes.
The pieces were finally beginning to fit.
The accident had not been a single event.
It had been the beginning of the cover-up.
They returned to the safe house.
Giovanni refused to sit.
He paced across the room.
"I should have told you everything years ago."
Marcus looked at him.
"Why didn't you?"
"Because your father threatened everyone I loved."
"That doesn't explain everything."
Giovanni stopped.
"You want the truth?"
"Yes."
"Your father wasn't the only person responsible."
Silence filled the room.
Khloe looked at him.
"Who else?"
Giovanni looked at Victoria.
She lowered her eyes.
Marcus noticed.
"You knew."
Victoria swallowed.
"Some of it."
"How much?"
"I knew Edward had a second trust."
"And?"
"I knew Elena had been trying to reclaim it."
"And?"
Victoria's voice broke.
"I knew Richard was controlling the records."
Marcus stared at her.
"You all knew."
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"We knew pieces."
"And none of you told me."
"We were afraid."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Everyone is afraid."
He walked toward the window.
"That fear is what destroyed this family."
Khloe opened the maternity file again.
There were dozens of inconsistencies.
Birth dates.
Hospital numbers.
Signatures.
But one pattern kept appearing.
The same initials.
R.M.
She looked at Harris.
"Who signed these?"
He examined the documents.
"I don't know."
"Find out."
He nodded.
Khloe pointed to another page.
"Here."
Another signature.
R.M.
And another.
R.M.
Every major document connected to her identity had passed through the same person.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Whoever R.M. was, they weren't just altering records."
"They were building a new identity for you."
Khloe looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because the real one was dangerous."
A knock came at the door.
Everyone froze.
Harris reached for his weapon.
Marcus nodded toward the door.
Harris opened it.
A young woman stood outside.
Wet from the rain.
Terrified.
She looked at Khloe.
"My name is Nora."
Khloe frowned.
"How do you know me?"
Nora held out a flash drive.
"Because my father worked for Edward Thorne."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Who was your father?"
Nora looked at him.
"Richard's."
The room went silent.
"My father is dead," she continued.
"But before he died, he told me something."
"What?"
"He said Richard wasn't working for Edward."
Marcus stared.
"Then who was he working for?"
Nora looked toward the window.
"Someone who has been alive the entire time."
Khloe felt a chill.
"Who?"
Nora whispered:
"Your grandmother."
Nobody spoke.
Khloe's grandmother had supposedly died before she was born.
Marcus shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Nora opened the flash drive.
"There are files."
She connected it to the computer.
A video appeared.
An elderly woman sat behind a desk.
Khloe recognized her immediately.
A photograph from her childhood.
Her grandmother.
But the date on the video was recent.
Three months earlier.
Khloe stepped backward.
"She's alive."
Nora nodded.
"And she's been paying Richard."
The video began.
The old woman looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, Edward failed."
She smiled.
"My son always believed he was the architect."
She laughed softly.
"He was never more than a piece on the board."
Khloe stared.
The woman continued.
"The Rossi family did not lose the trust."
"We allowed Edward to believe he had stolen it."
Marcus frowned.
"Why?"
The woman answered as though she could hear him.
"Because sometimes the best way to protect an inheritance is to let your enemy believe he owns it."
Khloe's breathing slowed.
"Then why hide me?"
"Because you were the key."
The video continued.
"When Khloe was born, Edward discovered the truth."
"He intended to eliminate the Rossi claim."
"So I removed Khloe from the board."
Khloe whispered:
"You gave me away."
The woman nodded.
"I saved you."
Marcus watched in disbelief.
The woman continued.
"Edward believed the trust belonged to him."
"He never understood that the legal ownership was protected by a succession clause."
"Only a direct descendant of the original Rossi line could activate it."
Khloe's eyes widened.
"Me."
"Yes."
"And Clara?"
The woman looked toward the camera.
For the first time, her expression changed.
"Clara was never part of the succession."
Khloe froze.
"Then who is she?"
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nora looked at them.
"I don't know."
Marcus slammed his hand onto the desk.
"Then where is Richard?"
Nora answered:
"At the Thorne headquarters."
"What is he doing?"
"Preparing a board meeting."
Khloe frowned.
"Why?"
Nora looked at her.
"Because he intends to declare you legally dead."
The family war had begun.
By noon, every major financial network was reporting the same story.
KHLOE THORNE PRESUMED DEAD AFTER DISAPPEARANCE.
Marcus watched the television.
The anchor continued.
"Sources close to the Thorne family say the company will hold an emergency succession meeting tonight."
Khloe stared.
"They're erasing me."
Marcus nodded.
"They're trying to."
"What happens if they succeed?"
"We lose the company."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
She looked at him.
"We lose the evidence."
Marcus understood.
If Richard controlled the company, he could destroy every record connecting Khloe to the trust.
The maternity file.
The original contracts.
The DNA evidence.
Everything.
"We have to get there first."
At Thorne headquarters, Richard stood before the board.
Every seat was occupied.
He placed a document on the table.
"Khloe Thorne is presumed deceased."
One director looked uncomfortable.
"There hasn't been a body."
Richard answered calmly.
"Given the circumstances, we cannot wait."
Another director spoke.
"Marcus is alive."
"Marcus has abandoned the company."
"That's not true."
Richard looked toward the door.
"Then perhaps he can explain why he hasn't appeared."
The doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Marcus walked inside.
Khloe followed.
Harris came behind them.
The room went silent.
Richard's face became completely still.
Khloe looked around the table.
"I believe you were discussing my death."
Nobody moved.
She walked to the empty chair reserved for her.
Then sat down.
"Please continue."
Richard's expression hardened.
"You have no legal authority to be here."
Khloe placed the maternity file on the table.
"Do you recognize this?"
His eyes flickered.
Only for a second.
But Marcus saw it.
So did Harris.
Richard recovered.
"I recognize a collection of forged documents."
Khloe smiled.
"Good."
She placed another document beside it.
"Then you'll recognize this."
The original trust agreement.
Signed by Edward.
And witnessed by Elena.
Richard's face changed.
"This document doesn't exist."
"It does now."
"Where did you get it?"
"From your worst enemy."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Daniel."
Khloe nodded.
"He gave it to us."
Richard stood.
"Daniel is dead."
Marcus smiled.
"Apparently your information is outdated."
The board members began whispering.
Khloe placed one document after another on the table.
The original trust.
The maternity record.
The transfer agreement.
The Rossi ownership clause.
Then the final page.
"The trust belongs to me."
Richard laughed.
"You expect this board to believe that?"
"No."
Khloe looked around.
"I expect the law to believe it."
She turned toward Harris.
He nodded.
"The documents have been authenticated."
Richard's confidence began to collapse.
But then he smiled.
"You forgot one thing."
"What?"
"Your mother."
Khloe froze.
Richard pressed a button.
The screen behind him came alive.
Elena appeared.
She was sitting in a dark room.
Richard smiled.
"She signed everything."
Khloe stared.
"She transferred your rights."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Show the document."
Richard did.
Elena's signature was unmistakable.
Khloe's heart sank.
Richard looked at the board.
"Your supposed heir voluntarily surrendered her claim."
The room fell silent.
Khloe stared at the screen.
Then she noticed something.
A tiny detail.
The signature date.
She smiled.
Richard frowned.
"What?"
Khloe stood.
"That's not my mother's signature."
Richard laughed.
"It was authenticated."
"No."
She pointed at the screen.
"The date."
"What about it?"
"My mother was in prison that day."
Richard's face changed.
Khloe continued.
"And the notary died twelve years ago."
Silence.
One of the directors stood.
"This document is fraudulent."
Richard stepped backward.
"No."
Khloe looked directly at him.
"You made one mistake."
"What?"
"You assumed nobody would check the date."
Richard's security team moved toward the room.
Harris immediately drew his weapon.
"Nobody move."
The doors locked.
Phones began ringing.
The board members panicked.
Richard looked at Khloe.
"You think you've won?"
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Marcus.
"We haven't."
Marcus understood.
Because the family war wasn't about the company anymore.
It was about the people Richard had hidden.
The missing child.
Daniel.
Elena.
And the woman on the video.
Khloe's grandmother.
Suddenly, the lights went out.
The building fell into darkness.
Someone screamed.
Emergency lights activated.
Then every screen in the boardroom turned on.
A live video appeared.
Daniel was sitting in an unknown location.
Beside him stood an elderly woman.
Khloe's grandmother.
And between them was a little girl.
The child looked directly into the camera.
Khloe's heart stopped.
It was the same voice.
The same face from the old photographs.
The child whispered:
"Mommy?"
Khloe covered her mouth.
Marcus stared at the screen.
The girl was alive.
And standing beside her was Daniel.
Then the elderly woman spoke.
"Richard."
Richard went pale.
"Mother."
Khloe turned toward him.
The room became completely silent.
Richard had not been working for her.
He had been working for his own mother.
The woman smiled.
"Come home."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"You have done enough."
"No!"
His voice broke.
"I did everything you asked!"
Khloe stared at him.
"You killed people for her."
Richard looked at her.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
His eyes filled with anger.
"Your grandmother promised me the trust."
Khloe froze.
"Why?"
"Because I was supposed to be the heir."
Marcus stepped forward.
"You?"
Richard laughed bitterly.
"Your grandfather had two sons."
Marcus's face went pale.
"Edward and Daniel."
Richard looked at him.
"And me."
Silence.
Khloe stared.
"You're their brother?"
Richard nodded.
"I was erased."
Marcus whispered:
"Then the family tree was a lie."
Richard smiled.
"Everything was a lie."
The truth finally emerged.
Richard had been the hidden third son.
The child excluded from the trust.
The forgotten branch of the family.
He had spent decades trying to reclaim what he believed had been stolen from him.
Edward had built the empire.
Daniel had protected the original trust.
And Richard had manipulated both sides.
He had worked for Edward while secretly answering to his mother.
He had forged records.
Controlled DNA tests.
Manipulated Isabella.
Used Elena.
And created the chaos surrounding Khloe.
All to make the family destroy itself.
But he had made one fatal mistake.
He had underestimated the woman he wanted erased.
Khloe walked toward him.
"You could have told me."
Richard stared.
"What?"
"You could have told me the truth."
He laughed.
"You would've given me the company?"
"If you had a legitimate claim, maybe."
Richard's expression twisted.
"People like you don't give power away."
Khloe shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Marcus.
"We give people a chance to earn it."
Richard stared at them.
Then the doors opened.
Police entered.
Harris stepped aside.
Richard looked around.
His allies were gone.
His evidence was exposed.
His mother was waiting for him.
And the empire he had spent decades trying to control was slipping away.
He lowered his head.
For the first time, he looked defeated.
But before police could take him, his phone rang.
Everyone heard the speaker.
A man's voice said:
"Richard."
Richard froze.
Marcus looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Richard didn't answer.
The voice continued.
"You were never the final player."
Then the call ended.
Khloe's blood ran cold.
She looked at Marcus.
"Who else is left?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Because on the boardroom screen, a new file had appeared.
PROJECT HEIR — FINAL SUBJECT.
And beneath it was a photograph.
A photograph of Khloe's unborn child.
The room fell silent.
Someone had been planning this from the beginning.
Someone who had known about her pregnancy before almost anyone else.
Someone who had access to the hospital.
Someone who had been watching her every move.
And as Khloe stared at the photograph, she realized the family war was not ending.
It was only entering its final stage.
Because the person behind everything had finally revealed what they wanted.
Not the company.
Not the trust.
May you like
Not even Khloe.
Her child.
