Chapter 7 — The Marriage They Wanted to Destroy

Chapter 7 — The Marriage They Wanted to Destroy
By dawn, the Thorne family had stopped pretending this was about jealousy.
It had never been.
The attack on Khloe had been only the visible part of something much older.
Something that had begun before Marcus was born.
Something that had survived twenty-three years of lies.
And now, sitting beside his pregnant wife in a hospital room surrounded by armed security, Marcus finally understood the one thing that frightened him more than any threat.
Someone had spent months trying to convince him that his marriage was the problem.
When the truth was that his marriage was the thing standing between them and everything they wanted.
Marcus hadn't slept.
Neither had Khloe.
She sat against the pillows, one hand resting beneath her stomach.
The baby was moving.
Every few minutes, Khloe would glance down as though reassuring herself that everything was still normal.
Marcus watched her.
"I keep thinking about that night."
Khloe looked at him.
"Which night?"
"The first time I met you."
She smiled faintly.
"You spilled coffee on me."
"I didn't spill it."
"You absolutely did."
"You stepped backward."
"Because you walked into me."
Marcus laughed.
For the first time in hours, the tension in the room loosened.
Then his expression changed.
"I should have protected you from all of this."
Khloe shook her head.
"You didn't create it."
"But I ignored the signs."
"We both did."
"I should have listened."
Khloe reached for his hand.
"You are listening now."
Marcus looked at their joined hands.
"That's what scares me."
"What?"
"That everyone who knew the truth knew exactly how to separate us."
Khloe's smile disappeared.
"Then we don't let them."
Marcus looked at her.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Neither of them knew how difficult that promise would become.
At 7:18 a.m., Detective Harris arrived.
He placed a folder on the table.
"We found Isabella."
Marcus stood.
"Where?"
"Under protective custody."
"Is she safe?"
Harris hesitated.
"For the moment."
Khloe frowned.
"What happened?"
"Someone tried to intercept the vehicle transporting her."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Richard?"
"Possibly."
"Did they catch him?"
"No."
Harris opened the folder.
"But we recovered something."
He placed a photograph on the table.
A woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Standing outside a private estate.
Khloe stared.
"Is that Isabella's mother?"
Harris nodded.
"Her name is Elena Rossi."
Marcus looked at Victoria.
She had gone completely still.
"You know her."
Victoria's eyes remained on the photograph.
"Yes."
"How?"
Victoria whispered:
"She was my closest friend."
Marcus stared.
"Before everything happened."
Victoria nodded.
"Before she betrayed us."
The story began twenty-three years earlier.
Victoria and Elena had been inseparable.
Their husbands were business partners.
Their children were young.
The families traveled together.
Had dinners together.
Celebrated birthdays together.
Nobody suspected anything.
But Elena wanted more.
She wanted control of the Thorne companies.
She wanted access to the family trust.
And eventually, she discovered something.
A weakness.
Edward Thorne's greatest weakness wasn't money.
It was his family.
Elena discovered that Edward was preparing to restructure the trust.
When the new document became effective, certain people would lose control.
Elena was one of them.
So she created a plan.
A marriage.
A child.
A succession.
And a betrayal.
Marcus listened in disbelief.
"She wanted Isabella to marry me?"
Victoria nodded.
"Not because she loved you."
"Because of the trust."
"Yes."
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"So when Isabella came into my life..."
"She was following instructions."
Khloe looked down.
"Then what happened?"
Victoria hesitated.
"She fell in love with you."
Marcus stared.
"She actually loved me?"
"Yes."
That answer hurt more than he expected.
Because it explained everything.
The obsession.
The jealousy.
The anger.
The desperation.
But it didn't excuse the attack.
Khloe seemed to understand what he was thinking.
"Love doesn't excuse violence."
Victoria nodded.
"No."
"Then why did Isabella continue?"
"Because Elena had something she could use against her."
Marcus looked up.
"What?"
"Her mother."
At 8:02 a.m., Isabella sat in a secure room.
Detective Harris entered.
"You need to tell us everything."
Isabella stared at him.
"My mother is alive."
"We know."
"She's coming."
"We know."
"You don't understand."
Harris sat down.
"Then explain."
Isabella took a deep breath.
"She doesn't want the trust."
Harris frowned.
"Then what does she want?"
"Me."
He waited.
"She wants me to finish what she started."
"What's that?"
Isabella looked at him.
"Destroy Marcus and Khloe's marriage."
Harris was silent.
Isabella continued.
"She believes if Marcus divorces Khloe, everything changes."
"Why?"
"Because Khloe is pregnant."
"Yes."
"Under the trust, a married mother has certain rights."
Harris frowned.
"What rights?"
"If Marcus remains married to Khloe when the baby is born, Khloe becomes co-trustee."
Harris understood.
"But if they divorce..."
"Khloe loses her position."
"Who becomes trustee?"
Isabella's voice dropped.
"Whoever has the strongest legal claim."
Harris looked at her.
"Richard."
She nodded.
"Exactly."
The plan suddenly became clear.
They didn't need Khloe dead.
They needed her powerless.
They needed Marcus angry.
They needed the marriage destroyed before the child was born.
The attack had been designed to accomplish exactly that.
Isabella would accuse Khloe.
Marcus would believe her.
The marriage would collapse.
The trust would become vulnerable.
Richard would step in.
And the child would be born into a legal battle.
A perfect trap.
Except something had gone wrong.
The camera had seen everything.
Khloe had kept evidence.
Victoria had returned.
And Marcus had finally stopped trusting the wrong people.
At 8:44 a.m., Marcus received a call.
It was from his attorney.
"Mr. Thorne, we have a problem."
"What kind?"
"A divorce petition has been filed."
Marcus froze.
"By whom?"
"Your wife."
He looked toward Khloe.
"What?"
The attorney continued.
"The documents were filed electronically at 8:31 this morning."
Marcus stared at his phone.
"Khloe hasn't left this room."
"I know."
"Then someone forged her signature."
"That's what it appears to be."
Khloe heard him.
"Marcus?"
He walked toward her.
"Someone filed for divorce in your name."
Khloe's face went pale.
"Why?"
Marcus looked at Victoria.
"Because they want us separated."
Adrian entered the room.
"I've already contacted the court."
"Can they stop it?"
"Yes."
Marcus exhaled.
Then Adrian added:
"But that's not the worst part."
"What?"
"The filing contains a custody request."
Khloe's expression changed.
"They're asking for our baby?"
Adrian nodded.
"Emergency temporary custody."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Who filed it?"
Adrian looked at the document.
"The petitioner is listed as Khloe Thorne."
"But she didn't file it."
"No."
"Then who?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Someone using a legal identity linked to your family trust."
Marcus stared.
"Richard."
The phone rang again.
This time, it was Victoria's.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice spoke.
"You always were difficult to kill."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Elena."
Marcus immediately looked at her.
Elena laughed.
"You took my daughter."
"I protected her."
"You stole her from me."
"You abandoned her."
"I had to."
"You chose power."
"I chose survival."
Victoria's voice hardened.
"And now you want Isabella to destroy another family."
"She was born to finish what I started."
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"She was born to be loved."
Elena's voice became cold.
"That's why she's weak."
The call ended.
Victoria stared at the phone.
Marcus asked:
"What did she say?"
Victoria looked at him.
"She has Isabella."
Marcus froze.
"What?"
"She took her."
At the same moment, the secure room where Isabella had been held was empty.
The security officer lay unconscious.
The door stood open.
On the wall was a single message.
MOTHERS ALWAYS GET THEIR CHILDREN BACK.
Isabella woke inside a moving car.
Her hands were tied.
Her mouth was dry.
She recognized the perfume immediately.
"Mom."
Elena sat beside her.
She looked exactly as she had in Isabella's childhood photographs.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
"You finally came back to me."
Isabella stared.
"You kidnapped me."
"I rescued you."
"From the police?"
"From yourself."
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't want this anymore."
Elena looked disappointed.
"You always were sentimental."
"I won't hurt Khloe."
"You already did."
"I won't do it again."
Elena smiled.
"You don't have to."
"What?"
"I have someone else."
The car stopped.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Richard.
Isabella stared.
"You."
Richard sat across from her.
"You failed."
"I didn't know the truth."
"You knew enough."
"No."
Isabella's voice shook.
"You lied to me."
Richard leaned closer.
"Your mother never lied."
Isabella looked at Elena.
"Did you?"
Elena said nothing.
Richard smiled.
"She simply never told you everything."
At the hospital, Marcus refused to leave Khloe.
Security had doubled.
The trust attorneys had been called.
The police were searching for Isabella.
And yet Marcus felt more helpless than ever.
Khloe touched his arm.
"You need to go."
"No."
"Marcus."
"No."
"Listen to me."
He looked at her.
"If they want us separated, then we stay together."
He smiled sadly.
"That's what I said."
Khloe shook her head.
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
"Then marry me again."
Marcus blinked.
"What?"
Khloe smiled.
"Not legally."
She took off her wedding ring.
She placed it in his palm.
"Tell me why you married me."
Marcus stared at the ring.
"Because I loved you."
"That's all?"
"No."
He looked at her.
"Because you made me want to become better."
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
"Then remember that."
Marcus put the ring back on her finger.
"I do."
At that exact moment, the hospital's legal office received an email.
The subject line read:
MARITAL FRAUD — EMERGENCY PETITION
Attached were photographs.
Photographs of Marcus with Isabella.
Photographs of Khloe with another man.
Photographs of secret meetings.
All carefully edited.
All convincing.
The message claimed Khloe had been unfaithful.
That she had married Marcus for money.
That the unborn child might not be his.
And one photograph appeared to prove it.
Khloe standing outside a hotel.
Holding hands with a man.
Marcus saw it.
His face went white.
Khloe looked at the image.
Then at Marcus.
"I've never seen that man."
Marcus stared at her.
"I believe you."
The lawyer looked surprised.
"Mr. Thorne, this could destroy the case."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Khloe.
"It could destroy their plan."
Adrian examined the photograph.
"Look at the reflection."
Marcus stepped closer.
In the hotel window behind Khloe, another image was visible.
A security camera.
And beneath it—
a date.
Three months before Khloe had even met Marcus.
Adrian smiled.
"It's fake."
Khloe exhaled.
"Can we prove it?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"Because whoever created this didn't realize the hotel's camera system keeps archived timestamps."
Marcus looked at him.
"Get the footage."
"Already requested."
At 11:15 a.m., the hotel sent the original recording.
It showed Khloe walking alone.
No man.
No affair.
No secret meeting.
The photograph had been manipulated.
But the person who created it had made one mistake.
They had left a tiny fragment of the original image.
A reflection.
A man's hand.
And on that hand—
three black lines.
Marcus stared.
"Victor Hale."
Adrian nodded.
"The same man from the hospital."
Khloe frowned.
"Why would he fake a photograph of me?"
Adrian answered:
"Because he wants Marcus to believe the marriage is a lie."
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"And because he knows if I don't believe her..."
He stopped.
Khloe finished the sentence.
"...we lose everything."
That evening, Marcus held a press conference.
The world had already heard rumors.
The billionaire's pregnant wife.
The mistress.
The hospital attack.
The divorce filing.
The alleged affair.
The scandal was spreading across social media.
Reporters gathered outside the hospital.
Marcus walked to the microphones.
Khloe watched from a private room.
Adrian stood beside her.
Marcus spoke calmly.
"My wife was attacked."
The reporters erupted.
He continued.
"The person who attacked her lied."
Flashbulbs exploded.
"Someone then attempted to forge legal documents separating us."
More shouting.
"And someone is now attempting to destroy my wife's reputation."
A reporter asked:
"Are you denying the affair allegations?"
Marcus looked directly into the cameras.
"I am denying every false accusation against my wife."
Another reporter shouted:
"Do you still trust her?"
Marcus didn't hesitate.
"Completely."
Khloe covered her mouth.
Marcus continued.
"My wife is carrying our child."
He paused.
"And anyone attempting to separate us will fail."
Across town, Elena watched the press conference.
She smiled.
Richard stood behind her.
"You underestimated him."
"No."
She turned off the television.
"I underestimated her."
"Khloe?"
Elena nodded.
"She has made him loyal."
Richard frowned.
"Then separate them."
Elena looked at him.
"How?"
Richard smiled.
"Give him a reason to leave."
Elena's eyes narrowed.
"What reason?"
Richard placed a file on the table.
Inside was a birth certificate.
A DNA report.
And an old photograph.
Elena looked at them.
Then smiled.
"Perfect."
That night, Marcus returned to Khloe's room.
She was asleep.
He sat beside her.
For a while, he simply watched her breathe.
Then he noticed an envelope beneath her pillow.
He pulled it out.
His name was written on the front.
MARCUS.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A newborn baby.
The same photograph they had found in the hidden room.
On the back, written in fresh ink:
SHE IS NOT YOUR DAUGHTER.
Marcus stared.
His hands began to shake.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Do you want to know who the child's real father is?"
Marcus couldn't speak.
The voice continued.
"Meet me tomorrow."
"Where?"
"The place where your father died."
The line went dead.
Marcus looked toward Khloe.
She was still asleep.
He looked again at the photograph.
For the first time since the attack, doubt entered his mind.
Not because he believed the accusation.
But because someone had found a way to weaponize the one thing he couldn't afford to question.
His family.
His child.
His marriage.
And somewhere in the darkness, Elena Rossi was smiling.
May you like
Because she had finally discovered the one weapon even love could not completely defend against.
Doubt.
