Chapter 4 — The Evidence She Created

Chapter 4 — The Evidence She Created
The footsteps stopped outside Khloe's door.
Nobody moved.
Marcus stood between his wife and the entrance.
Adrian was beside the window, watching the emergency lights flicker across the hallway.
The nurse remained frozen near the bed.
For several seconds, the hospital seemed to hold its breath.
Then someone knocked.
Three times.
Slowly.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
Adrian shook his head.
Don't open it.
The knock came again.
Three times.
Then a man's voice came through the door.
"Security."
Marcus didn't move.
"Identify yourself."
"Officer Daniel Price."
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"Open it."
Adrian stepped forward.
The door opened.
Daniel entered, breathing heavily.
His shirt was untucked.
There was blood on his sleeve.
Marcus immediately noticed.
"You're hurt."
"Not mine."
Daniel shut the door.
"Someone attacked one of the security officers downstairs."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Who?"
"We don't know."
"Where?"
"East corridor."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Is the system back?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Then how did you get here?"
Daniel held up a small device.
"Manual override."
He looked at Adrian.
"Someone deliberately shut down the hospital's security network."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"How long?"
"Seven minutes."
Marcus looked at the dark monitor.
"Again."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly seven."
Silence.
Khloe whispered:
"They're doing it again."
Daniel looked at her.
"Who's they?"
Khloe stared at the hallway.
"I don't know."
But her voice told them she had already begun to suspect the answer.
Across the city, Isabella Rossi was sitting in a police interview room.
She had been there for nearly six hours.
Her lawyer sat beside her.
The detective sat across the table.
A recorder blinked red.
The detective opened a folder.
"Let's start again."
Isabella sighed.
"I've already answered these questions."
"Then it should be easy."
He slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Khloe lying on the marble floor.
Isabella looked at it.
"You said Mrs. Thorne attacked you first."
"Yes."
"You said you pushed her away."
"Yes."
"You said the kick was accidental."
"Yes."
The detective placed another photograph beside the first.
It showed Isabella's foot striking Khloe's side.
"Does this look accidental?"
Isabella's lawyer immediately interrupted.
"Detective."
The detective ignored him.
"Look carefully."
Isabella stared at the photograph.
Then she looked away.
"I was afraid."
"You weren't."
"You weren't there."
"No."
The detective leaned back.
"But the camera was."
Isabella's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
The detective opened another folder.
"This is where your story becomes interesting."
He placed a document in front of her.
A hospital access record.
"Three weeks ago, someone using your phone accessed Mrs. Thorne's medical file."
"I didn't do that."
"Your phone did."
"I told you, I wasn't responsible."
"Then who was?"
Isabella said nothing.
The detective waited.
"Isabella."
She stared at the table.
"I don't know."
"That's your answer?"
"Yes."
He placed another document down.
"This is the payment record."
Isabella looked at it.
Her face changed.
A transfer of $75,000.
Paid to a private account.
The recipient's name was hidden behind a company.
Rossi Strategic Consulting.
Isabella whispered:
"What is this?"
The detective watched her.
"That's what we're asking."
Back at the hospital, the emergency lights finally stabilized.
The security monitors remained black.
Daniel connected his device to the network.
"Someone installed a backdoor."
Adrian frowned.
"Can you remove it?"
"Not without shutting down the entire system."
"Do it."
Daniel hesitated.
"That could take the hospital offline."
"Do it."
Daniel nodded.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"What are we dealing with?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Daniel did.
"Someone who understands the hospital's infrastructure."
Marcus frowned.
"Meaning?"
"They know where the cameras are."
"They know how to disable them."
"They know how to access private medical files."
Daniel paused.
"And they know how to make it look like an ordinary system failure."
Marcus looked toward Khloe.
"Then Isabella couldn't have done this alone."
"No."
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"She didn't."
At 6:02 a.m., Daniel restored one camera.
Camera 12.
The hallway outside Khloe's room.
The image appeared.
Empty corridor.
Then—
a figure walked into view.
A man.
Dark coat.
Dark cap.
He stopped outside Khloe's door.
He looked toward the camera.
Then raised his hand.
In his hand was something small.
A keycard.
Daniel zoomed in.
"That's not hospital-issued."
Adrian leaned closer.
"Can you identify it?"
"Not yet."
The man swiped the card.
The door didn't open.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Then he looked down at his phone.
A message appeared.
He read it.
Then walked away.
Daniel rewound the footage.
"Wait."
"What?"
"Look at his wrist."
The man's sleeve had moved slightly.
A tattoo appeared.
Three black lines.
Adrian stared.
"I've seen that before."
Marcus looked at him.
"Where?"
Adrian didn't answer.
He walked out.
Five minutes later, Adrian entered another part of the hospital.
The old medical archive.
The room smelled of dust and disinfectant.
He opened a drawer.
Inside were photographs from twenty-three years ago.
He pulled one out.
A younger Richard Thorne stood beside a man.
The same tattoo was visible on the man's wrist.
Three black lines.
Adrian whispered:
"Victor Hale."
The name meant nothing to Marcus.
But Daniel recognized it.
"Who was he?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Richard's driver."
"Was?"
"He disappeared after the accident."
Daniel stared.
"Disappeared?"
"Nobody ever found him."
Marcus's voice came from the doorway.
"Then why is he back?"
Adrian turned.
"That's the question."
In the police station, Isabella's lawyer leaned toward her.
"Listen carefully."
She looked at him.
"You need to stop talking."
"I haven't said anything."
"You've said enough."
He lowered his voice.
"They have evidence."
"How much?"
"Enough to make this dangerous."
Isabella swallowed.
"What should I do?"
"Tell them you were emotionally unstable."
"What?"
"Say you were under pressure."
"I can't say that."
"Why?"
"Because it's not true."
Her lawyer stared at her.
For the first time, Isabella looked genuinely confused.
"You've spent years lying."
He paused.
"Why stop now?"
She looked at him.
"Because this time the lie could get me killed."
The door opened.
A police officer entered.
"Ms. Rossi."
He handed the detective another folder.
The detective opened it.
His expression changed.
He looked at Isabella.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"Your father just withdrew twenty million dollars from one of his accounts."
Isabella stared.
"What?"
"Twenty million."
"Why?"
The detective closed the folder.
"That's what we'd like to know."
Giovanni Rossi sat alone in his car.
The city was still dark.
His phone rang.
He answered.
"Yes?"
A distorted voice spoke.
"She hasn't told them."
Giovanni looked toward the hospital.
"No."
"Good."
"She knows too much."
"Then make sure she stays quiet."
Giovanni's hand tightened around the steering wheel.
"Richard."
Silence.
"You promised my daughter would be safe."
"I promised nothing."
Giovanni closed his eyes.
"You said the plan was simple."
"It was."
"You said Khloe would disappear."
"She was supposed to."
"But she didn't."
"No."
"And now the police have the footage."
Another pause.
Then Richard said:
"That's why you have to find the original."
"The original what?"
"The evidence."
Giovanni frowned.
"What evidence?"
"The evidence Khloe has been collecting."
His blood went cold.
"What?"
Richard continued:
"She knows more than you think."
Khloe was sitting upright when Marcus returned.
He looked different.
More serious.
"What happened?"
He sat beside her.
"We found another man."
"Who?"
"Richard's former driver."
Khloe frowned.
"Why?"
"He may have been involved in the attack."
She looked at Marcus.
"Is Isabella still in custody?"
"Yes."
"Then why are they still trying to reach me?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Khloe looked toward Adrian.
"Because she isn't the only one."
Adrian nodded.
"Correct."
Khloe's hand moved toward the bedside table.
She picked up her phone.
"There's something I never told you."
Marcus looked at her.
"What?"
Khloe opened a hidden folder.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Documents.
Screenshots.
Audio recordings.
Marcus stared.
"What is all this?"
Khloe looked at him.
"I've been keeping records."
"Of what?"
"Everything strange that happened before tonight."
Adrian stepped closer.
"What kind of things?"
Khloe began scrolling.
A photograph of an unfamiliar car parked outside their house.
A screenshot of an unknown number calling her repeatedly.
A photograph of a hotel receipt.
A copy of a medical appointment request she had never made.
Then—
a photograph of Isabella.
Standing outside the Thorne Foundation's private office.
Taken three months earlier.
Marcus stared.
"Why didn't you show me?"
"Because every time I tried to tell you something was wrong, Isabella would somehow make it look like I was jealous."
Marcus closed his eyes.
Khloe continued.
"So I started keeping evidence."
Adrian looked impressed.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
She opened another folder.
"Then I found this."
A scanned document appeared.
Marcus leaned closer.
"What is that?"
"The Thorne Family Trust."
Marcus froze.
"You had this?"
"I found it hidden inside one of your father's old files."
Adrian's expression changed.
"Khloe."
She looked at him.
"What?"
Adrian stared at the document.
"Where did you get the original?"
"In the old library."
"Does anyone else know?"
"I don't think so."
Marcus took the phone.
The document showed a clause.
He read it slowly.
Then again.
His face changed.
"What?"
Khloe looked at him.
Marcus didn't answer.
Adrian read over his shoulder.
His face went pale.
"The unborn child..."
He stopped.
Khloe whispered:
"What about the baby?"
Adrian looked at Marcus.
"She is the primary beneficiary."
Silence.
Khloe stared at them.
"Of what?"
Marcus looked at her.
"The entire family trust."
The implications hit all of them at once.
The trust wasn't just money.
It contained controlling interests in several Thorne companies.
Real estate.
Investment portfolios.
Private equity holdings.
Voting rights.
If the child was born alive—
control of the trust would eventually pass to her.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"That's why."
"Why what?"
"Why they wanted the pregnancy."
Khloe's face went pale.
Adrian nodded.
"Your child isn't just an heir."
He looked toward the door.
"She's the key."
At 7:11 a.m., Isabella received another message.
Her phone had been confiscated.
But someone had slipped a second phone beneath the table.
She stared at it.
One message.
YOU HAVE UNTIL NOON.
Then another.
TELL THEM KHLOE LIED.
Then:
OR YOUR FATHER DIES.
Isabella's breathing became shallow.
She looked at the detective.
He was reading another document.
Her lawyer was speaking.
Nobody noticed the phone.
Her fingers trembled.
She wanted to tell the truth.
She wanted to tell them everything.
But then she remembered her father.
And she remembered the photograph.
Her mother.
Alive.
Richard beside her.
A secret that had been buried for eleven years.
She typed one word.
WHY?
The response came immediately.
BECAUSE YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.
Isabella froze.
Another message appeared.
KHLOE WAS.
At the hospital, Marcus was reading the trust document again.
"There's a condition."
Adrian looked at him.
"What?"
Marcus pointed to a paragraph.
"If the primary beneficiary is born under circumstances involving coercion, fraud, or criminal interference, the trustee may freeze all assets."
Khloe stared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means whoever controls the trust wants to control the circumstances surrounding your child's birth."
Adrian's voice became grim.
"They don't simply want the baby dead."
Khloe looked at him.
"What do they want?"
"They want control."
Marcus's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?"
Richard's voice returned.
"Now you understand."
Marcus stood.
"You were after the trust."
"No."
"Then what?"
"I was protecting it."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"You attacked my wife."
"I didn't."
"You sent Isabella."
"No."
"Then who?"
Richard paused.
"Ask your mother."
Marcus's expression changed.
"My mother is dead."
"Is she?"
The call ended.
Marcus stared at the phone.
Khloe whispered:
"What did he say?"
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"Richard says my mother may still be alive."
Adrian went completely still.
That evening, Daniel returned to the security room.
He had spent hours examining the seven-minute gap.
He had finally found something.
A hidden metadata file.
It contained one line.
ACCESS AUTHORIZED — VICTORIA THORNE
Daniel's hands went cold.
He called Adrian.
"Sir."
"What?"
"We found the person who accessed the system."
"Who?"
Daniel stared at the screen.
"Victoria Thorne."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"That's impossible."
"I know."
"She's dead."
Daniel swallowed.
"Then someone is using her identity."
Adrian asked:
"Can you trace the login?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Daniel looked at the location.
His face changed.
"Inside the hospital."
"Where?"
Daniel whispered:
"Private maternity wing."
At that exact moment, the door to Khloe's room slowly opened.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She wore a white coat.
Her face was partially hidden by a surgical mask.
Marcus stood immediately.
"Who are you?"
The woman didn't answer.
She stepped inside.
Khloe looked at her.
Something about her eyes felt familiar.
The woman removed the mask.
Khloe stopped breathing.
Marcus stared.
Adrian, who had just entered behind them, froze.
Nobody spoke.
Because the woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like the photograph they had found twenty-three years earlier.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
Victoria Thorne.
Marcus's mother.
She looked at her son.
Then at Khloe.
Then at the unborn child.
And whispered:
"I came back because they are going to kill you before your daughter is born."
The room fell silent.
Marcus couldn't move.
"Mom?"
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"I'm sorry."
Then the lights went out again.
May you like
Seven minutes.
And this time, the hospital doors locked from the inside.
