Chapter 9 — The Night Khloe Disappeared

Chapter 9 — The Night Khloe Disappeared
The headlights disappeared from the window.
Marcus stood perfectly still.
His hand remained on the curtain.
Khloe was behind him, holding the letter with both hands.
Neither of them spoke.
The photograph of her mother was still open on Marcus's phone.
Alive.
Standing beside Elena Rossi.
Holding a newborn.
And beneath it, the sentence that had shattered everything:
ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE GAVE YOU AWAY.
Khloe's breathing became uneven.
"She knew."
Marcus turned.
"Who?"
"My mother."
He walked toward her.
"Khloe—"
"She knew who I was."
"Maybe."
"No."
Khloe shook her head.
"Look at the letter."
Marcus looked again.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
The first sentence wasn't a warning.
It was an admission.
You were never supposed to know that you are Edward Thorne's daughter.
Khloe pressed the letter against her chest.
"Why would she hide that?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Because both of them knew the answer could change everything.
The front door slammed.
Security rushed into the house.
Marcus immediately pulled Khloe behind him.
"Where did they go?"
The lead officer shook his head.
"The vehicle left before we reached the street."
"License plate?"
"Covered."
"How many people?"
"At least two."
Khloe stepped forward.
"Did they leave anything?"
The officer hesitated.
"Yes."
He held up a small envelope.
It had been placed beneath the windshield of one of their security vehicles.
Marcus took it.
Inside was a single key.
Old.
Brass.
With a number engraved into it.
17.
Khloe stared.
"I know that key."
Marcus looked at her.
"From where?"
"My mother's house."
She walked toward the staircase.
"Room seventeen."
Marcus frowned.
"There are only twelve rooms."
Khloe stopped.
"Exactly."
The hidden room was behind a panel inside the library.
The key opened it.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
Marcus turned on his flashlight.
"Stay behind me."
Khloe nodded.
They went down.
The air smelled old.
Dust.
Paper.
And something faintly metallic.
At the bottom was a small room.
Shelves lined the walls.
Boxes covered the floor.
And on the far wall were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Khloe walked closer.
Her childhood.
Her first birthday.
Her first day at school.
Her graduation.
Her wedding.
Someone had been watching her entire life.
Marcus stared at the photographs.
"Who took these?"
Khloe didn't answer.
She saw something else.
A photograph of herself at nineteen.
Standing outside a university dormitory.
Behind her, barely visible in the distance, was Elena Rossi.
Another photograph.
Khloe at twenty-two.
Leaving work.
Richard Thorne's car parked across the street.
Another.
Khloe at twenty-five.
Marcus hadn't met her yet.
Yet someone had been following her.
For years.
Khloe whispered:
"They knew where I was before I ever met you."
Marcus looked at her.
"They knew who you were."
On a table in the center of the room sat three files.
The first was labeled:
KHLOE RIVERS — ORIGINAL IDENTITY
The second:
ELENA ROSSI — CONTINGENCY PLAN
The third:
MARCUS THORNE — MARRIAGE
Marcus opened the third.
His expression hardened.
Inside were photographs of him.
His daily schedule.
His business meetings.
His medical records.
And a detailed psychological profile.
Khloe read one line.
Primary weakness: emotional loyalty to family.
Another:
Secondary weakness: inability to abandon a woman he believes he has failed to protect.
Marcus closed the file.
"This was planned."
Khloe looked at him.
"The marriage?"
He nodded.
"Maybe not the way we think."
At the bottom of the file was a contract.
A marriage agreement.
Not theirs.
A draft.
Prepared years before Marcus met Khloe.
The proposed bride's name had been removed.
But one detail remained.
Marriage must occur before the birth of the heir.
Marcus stared.
"Someone planned for me to marry a specific woman."
Khloe's voice was quiet.
"Who?"
He turned the page.
A handwritten note appeared.
If Isabella fails, use Khloe.
Khloe stopped breathing.
"Me?"
Marcus looked at her.
"You were Plan B."
The truth was unbearable.
Their relationship had been monitored.
Their meeting had been anticipated.
Their marriage had been useful.
But neither of them knew exactly how much had been manipulated.
Khloe suddenly remembered their first meeting.
The coffee shop.
The rain.
The stranger who had bumped into her.
Marcus walking in minutes later.
A chance encounter.
Except maybe it hadn't been chance.
She looked at Marcus.
"Where did we first meet?"
"The Bellamy."
"Who recommended that place to you?"
He frowned.
"I don't remember."
"Think."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"My father."
Khloe stared.
"Your father sent you there?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"The morning we met."
Silence.
Khloe whispered:
"Then he knew."
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Marcus immediately turned off the flashlight.
"Someone's here."
Khloe grabbed his arm.
They moved into the darkness.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a woman's voice called:
"Khloe."
She froze.
Her mother's voice.
"Mom?"
Marcus whispered:
"Don't answer."
But Khloe couldn't stop herself.
"Mom?"
The voice came again.
"Come upstairs."
Khloe stepped toward the stairs.
Marcus stopped her.
"No."
Then the voice changed.
It became distorted.
Artificial.
A recording.
Marcus looked at the wall.
"Someone planted a speaker."
The voice repeated:
"Come upstairs."
Then the lights in the hidden room came on.
Every photograph on the wall disappeared behind a metal shutter.
A monitor flickered.
A video began playing.
Khloe saw herself.
Seven months earlier.
Walking into the hospital.
Pregnant.
Then the image changed.
Elena appeared.
She was speaking to someone off camera.
"I need her separated from Marcus before the child is born."
Khloe stared.
Then another voice answered.
Male.
Richard.
"She won't leave him."
Elena smiled.
"She won't have a choice."
The recording continued.
Richard asked:
"What about Isabella?"
"She will do what I tell her."
"And if she doesn't?"
Elena's expression hardened.
"Then we take away the only thing she still loves."
Khloe looked at Marcus.
"Who?"
The recording answered.
"Her mother."
Isabella had been controlled through fear.
Khloe understood.
The attack hadn't been Isabella's idea.
It had been coercion.
But that still didn't erase what Isabella had done.
Marcus watched the screen.
"Keep playing."
The video continued.
Elena spoke again.
"Once Khloe is isolated, we create the evidence."
Richard asked:
"And the baby?"
Elena smiled.
"The baby must survive."
Khloe's blood ran cold.
"Why?"
Elena answered:
"Because the child is the only person who can legally unlock the trust."
The screen went black.
Then a new file appeared.
PHASE TWO — DISAPPEARANCE.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"What does that mean?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
A countdown appeared.
00:10:00
Marcus's expression changed.
"We need to leave."
They ran toward the stairs.
The door above slammed shut.
Marcus pushed it.
Locked.
Khloe looked around.
"What do we do?"
Marcus grabbed the handle.
"Find another exit."
They searched the walls.
Nothing.
The countdown continued.
08:43.
Khloe's phone had no signal.
Marcus's didn't either.
Then a vent opened.
Gas began entering the room.
Khloe coughed.
Marcus pulled off his jacket and covered her mouth.
"Stay low."
"Marcus."
"I'm getting us out."
He kicked the wall.
Once.
Twice.
Nothing.
Again.
A section cracked.
Behind it was darkness.
A service tunnel.
Marcus grabbed Khloe.
"Go."
They crawled through the tunnel.
Khloe's breathing became difficult.
The baby moved violently.
"Marcus."
"I'm here."
"My stomach hurts."
He stopped.
"Are you bleeding?"
"No."
"Then keep moving."
They reached a metal ladder.
Marcus climbed first.
He opened the hatch.
Cold night air rushed in.
They emerged behind the house.
Security officers immediately surrounded them.
Khloe collapsed into Marcus's arms.
He held her tightly.
"We're out."
She looked back toward the house.
The hidden room was burning.
Flames rose through the windows.
Someone had destroyed the evidence.
But they hadn't destroyed everything.
Marcus opened his hand.
The brass key was still there.
And so was the photograph.
At the hospital, doctors examined Khloe.
The baby was stable.
But her blood pressure was dangerously high.
The doctor looked at Marcus.
"She needs complete rest."
Marcus nodded.
"She won't be alone."
The doctor left.
Khloe looked at him.
"Did you see the file?"
"Yes."
"Then you know."
"Know what?"
"Our marriage was part of their plan."
Marcus sat beside her.
"Maybe."
She looked away.
"What if everything between us was manipulated?"
Marcus took her hand.
"Was your love manipulated?"
"No."
"Was mine?"
"No."
"Then they may have created the circumstances."
He squeezed her fingers.
"But they didn't create what happened afterward."
Khloe looked at him.
"We chose each other."
"Exactly."
At 2:30 a.m., Detective Harris arrived.
"We found something."
Marcus looked at him.
"What?"
"The person who installed the hidden room's security system."
"Who?"
Harris handed him a photograph.
A young technician.
Marcus stared.
"I know him."
"Who?"
"He worked for my father."
Harris nodded.
"His name is Daniel Mercer."
Marcus frowned.
"He died."
"No."
Harris looked at him.
"He disappeared."
Another name added to the list.
Another person who was supposed to be dead.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"Why is everyone connected to my father still alive?"
Khloe whispered:
"Because they were waiting."
In a private warehouse on the edge of the city, Elena watched a monitor.
She saw the footage of Marcus and Khloe escaping.
Richard stood beside her.
"You failed."
Elena didn't respond.
"Your hidden room was destroyed."
"I expected that."
"Then why build it?"
"Because I needed them to find it."
Richard frowned.
"What?"
Elena smiled.
"Now they believe they understand the plan."
She turned toward another monitor.
On it was a live feed from the hospital.
Khloe sleeping.
Marcus beside her.
Elena watched them.
"They think I'm trying to destroy their marriage."
Richard said nothing.
"I'm not."
"Then what are you doing?"
Elena looked at him.
"Preparing Marcus."
"For what?"
"For the night Khloe disappears."
Richard's face changed.
"She's already escaped."
Elena smiled.
"Tonight wasn't the disappearance."
She touched the screen.
"Tonight was the rehearsal."
At 4:11 a.m., Khloe woke.
Marcus was asleep in the chair beside her.
She looked toward the window.
Something was wrong.
The room was too quiet.
The monitor beside her bed showed her heart rate.
Normal.
The baby's heart rate.
Normal.
Then she heard a whisper.
"Khloe."
She sat up.
Nobody was there.
The whisper came again.
"Khloe."
She looked toward the bathroom.
The door was open.
She reached for Marcus.
He didn't wake.
"Marcus."
Nothing.
Her vision blurred.
She suddenly felt dizzy.
The monitor began beeping.
A shadow appeared in the doorway.
A woman walked into the room.
Black coat.
Gloves.
Face hidden.
Khloe tried to scream.
No sound came.
The woman approached.
Then removed her mask.
Khloe's eyes widened.
Elena Rossi.
"Hello, Khloe."
Khloe tried to move.
Elena placed a finger against her lips.
"Don't."
She leaned closer.
"You've spent your whole life believing you were abandoned."
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
Elena whispered:
"You weren't."
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out an old photograph.
The same photograph of the newborn.
Khloe stared.
Elena smiled.
"You were stolen."
Khloe tried to reach for the call button.
Elena stopped her.
"Your mother didn't give you away."
Khloe froze.
"She gave you to Victoria."
Her voice became softer.
"To save you."
Khloe's eyes widened.
"From me."
Then the room went dark.
Marcus woke seconds later.
"Khloe?"
No answer.
He stood.
The bed was empty.
The monitors were still running.
The blanket lay on the floor.
The window was open.
And on the pillow was a note.
Marcus picked it up.
Three words.
COME FIND ME.
His hands began shaking.
He ran into the hallway.
"SECURITY!"
Officers rushed toward him.
"My wife is gone."
The hospital erupted.
Doors locked.
Elevators stopped.
Cameras activated.
But Khloe was nowhere.
Then every monitor in the hospital flickered.
A video appeared.
Khloe sat in a dark room.
Her hands were tied.
Her eyes were terrified.
Elena stood behind her.
And Elena looked directly into the camera.
"Marcus."
He froze.
"If you want your wife and your child alive..."
She smiled.
"Come alone."
The screen went black.
Marcus stared at it.
Detective Harris grabbed his arm.
"Don't go."
Marcus pulled away.
"I have to."
"No."
"They have Khloe."
"They want you."
"I know."
Marcus looked at the dark screen.
Then at Victoria.
Then at Adrian.
His voice became cold.
"Then they'll get me."
He walked toward the exit.
But before he reached the door, his phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
THE WOMAN YOU'RE GOING TO SAVE IS NOT WHO YOU THINK.
Marcus stopped.
Another message appeared.
ASK HER WHO SHE REALLY IS.
Then a final photograph.
Khloe.
As a newborn.
In the arms of Edward Thorne.
And beside him—
a young Elena Rossi.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
The kidnapping was real.
The danger was real.
But the deepest secret had finally surfaced.
Khloe had not simply been hidden.
She had been hidden because someone had spent twenty-three years trying to make sure she never discovered who she really was.
And now she was gone.
Taken by the woman who claimed to know the truth.
Marcus looked at Victoria.
"Where would Elena take her?"
Victoria's face went white.
"I know."
"Where?"
"The place where Edward kept his first secret."
Marcus waited.
Victoria whispered:
"The old Rossi estate."
Then she looked toward the dark hospital window.
"Marcus..."
"What?"
Victoria's voice broke.
"If Elena has taken Khloe there, then she's not trying to kill her."
"Then what?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"She's going to show her the truth."
And somewhere far away, Khloe opened her eyes in a dark room.
Elena was standing beside her.
On the table lay a stack of documents.
Birth records.
DNA tests.
Photographs.
And one final envelope.
Elena placed it in front of Khloe.
"This is the truth about your father."
Khloe stared at it.
"Who is he?"
Elena smiled.
"That's the question you've been asking all your life."
She pushed the envelope closer.
"And the answer is going to destroy your marriage."
Khloe opened it.
Her eyes moved across the first line.
Then she stopped breathing.
Because the name written there wasn't Edward Thorne.
It was Marcus Thorne.
And beneath his name was a sentence that made everything they believed about their marriage collapse.
PATERNITY CONFIRMED.
Elena watched her face.
"Now," she whispered,
"you finally understand why they were so desperate to keep you away from him."
May you like
The door locked.
And Khloe realized the kidnapping was only the beginning.
