Chapter 14 — The Last Betrayal

Chapter 14 — The Last Betrayal
Isabella Rossi had spent most of her life believing betrayal was something other people did.
She was wrong.
Betrayal had been the language her family spoke before she was old enough to understand words.
By the time she reached the underground parking garage, her hands were shaking.
The stolen surveillance drive was hidden inside her coat.
She had copied it from the hospital security system before leaving.
One file mattered more than all the others.
PROJECT HEIR — FINAL GUARDIAN.
She had watched it once.
Then twice.
Then a third time.
And every time, the same name appeared.
ELENA ROSSI.
Not Khloe.
Not Marcus.
Not Edward.
Elena.
The woman everyone believed had lost control of the situation.
The woman who had been arrested.
The woman who had supposedly sacrificed herself.
Isabella finally understood.
Elena had never been Edward's victim.
She had been playing a longer game.
The elevator doors opened.
Isabella stepped into the underground garage.
A black sedan waited near the exit.
She approached carefully.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
"Get in."
Isabella froze.
"Who are you?"
"You know who sent me."
She did.
She got inside.
The man drove without speaking.
After several minutes, Isabella asked:
"Where are we going?"
"To the woman who can end this."
Isabella looked through the window.
"Elena?"
The man said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Across the city, Khloe sat beside Marcus in the safe house.
The room was silent.
The pregnancy monitor on the table showed stable readings.
But Khloe couldn't relax.
Her grandmother's warning continued to echo in her mind.
The baby isn't the key.
The seal is.
Marcus had spent the last hour studying the original trust.
"There has to be another clause."
Khloe looked at him.
"We've read everything."
"Not everything."
He turned a page.
"The original document refers to an attached schedule."
"Where is it?"
"Missing."
Khloe frowned.
"Like the maternity file."
Marcus nodded.
"Someone removed it."
"Edward?"
"Maybe."
Harris entered.
"We found Isabella."
Khloe immediately stood.
"Where?"
"She's coming here."
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Absolutely not."
"Why?"
"Because she attacked you."
Khloe looked at him.
"I know."
"She could be working for Edward."
"I know."
"Then why let her in?"
Khloe looked toward the door.
"Because she knows something we don't."
The door opened.
Isabella walked inside.
She looked nothing like the elegant woman from the charity gala.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her face was pale.
There was a cut across her forehead.
She held a small black drive in her hand.
Khloe stared at her.
"You have five minutes."
Isabella nodded.
"I don't deserve your forgiveness."
"No."
"I know."
"You tried to hurt my child."
"I did."
"Why?"
Isabella looked down.
"Because I was threatened."
Khloe's expression hardened.
"So was everyone."
Isabella looked at Marcus.
"Your father had my brother."
Marcus froze.
"What?"
"He has him."
"Who?"
"My younger brother, Matteo."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then why should we believe you?"
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Edward sent me a video."
She handed over her phone.
Marcus played it.
A young man was tied to a chair.
Matteo.
Edward stood behind him.
"Bring me Khloe," he said.
"Or your brother dies."
The video ended.
Khloe looked at Isabella.
"You should have come to me."
"I was afraid."
"You attacked me."
"I know."
"And now you expect me to help you?"
"No."
Isabella looked directly at her.
"I came to help you."
She placed the drive on the table.
"This is the truth about the attack."
Khloe stared.
"Everything."
Isabella nodded.
"Every instruction Edward gave."
Marcus plugged in the drive.
Video files appeared.
Dates.
Times.
Names.
The first showed Isabella meeting Richard.
The second showed Dr. Vale.
The third showed Edward.
Then another file appeared.
ORDER — PRIVATE HOSPITAL SUITE.
Marcus opened it.
Edward's voice filled the room.
"She must believe Isabella acted alone."
Isabella closed her eyes.
Edward continued.
"If Khloe becomes afraid enough, she will leave Marcus."
Richard asked:
"And the child?"
Edward answered:
"The child must remain alive."
Marcus stopped the video.
Khloe stared.
"He never wanted to kill me."
"No," Isabella said.
"He wanted to separate you from Marcus."
"Why?"
"Because Marcus is the only person who can legally challenge him."
Khloe understood.
The attack had been designed to destroy their marriage.
The kidnapping had been designed to destroy their trust.
The false DNA report had been designed to destroy their identity.
Everything pointed toward one goal.
Isolation.
But Isabella wasn't finished.
"There is another file."
She opened it.
A hospital corridor appeared.
Dr. Vale was speaking to someone.
The person stood with her back to the camera.
Khloe recognized the coat.
Her grandmother.
"She's alive."
Marcus stared.
The video continued.
Dr. Vale handed the woman a sealed envelope.
She asked:
"Does Khloe know?"
"No."
"Good."
"And the child?"
"She doesn't know about the child either."
Khloe froze.
"Wait."
The video continued.
Dr. Vale asked:
"What happens if Marcus discovers the truth?"
The woman answered:
"Then we move to the final phase."
Khloe whispered:
"What final phase?"
The woman turned slightly.
Her face became visible.
It wasn't her grandmother.
It was Elena.
Khloe's heart stopped.
Elena was alive.
And she had been working with Dr. Vale.
Marcus looked at Isabella.
"You knew?"
"No."
"I saw this footage only tonight."
Khloe stared at the screen.
"Then why did Elena pretend to be a prisoner?"
Isabella shook her head.
"I don't know."
Harris entered the room.
"Maybe I do."
Everyone turned.
He held a document.
"Elena wasn't captured."
"What?"
"She arranged her own arrest."
Marcus frowned.
"Why?"
Harris placed the document down.
"Because she needed access to the evidence room."
Khloe stared.
"She stole something."
Harris nodded.
"The original bloodline seal."
Everything suddenly made sense.
Elena had allowed Edward to believe he had found the seal.
She had allowed the grandmother to believe she was protecting Khloe.
She had allowed Richard to believe he was controlling the company.
She had allowed Isabella to believe she was being used.
She had allowed everyone to fight.
Because while they fought...
she was collecting the pieces.
Marcus looked at Khloe.
"Elena is the real player."
Khloe nodded.
"She always was."
Then the safe house alarm sounded.
Harris looked at his phone.
"Movement outside."
Marcus grabbed his weapon.
"How many?"
"At least ten."
The lights went out.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Glass shattered.
Isabella dropped to the floor.
Khloe crouched behind the table.
Marcus shielded her.
"Stay down!"
The front door exploded inward.
Men rushed inside.
But they weren't Edward's men.
They wore police uniforms.
Harris looked shocked.
"Those aren't mine."
Marcus fired toward the ceiling.
"Everyone stay back!"
The men spread through the room.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
"Nobody needs to die."
Elena walked inside.
Khloe stared.
Her mother looked calm.
Elegant.
Untouched.
As if she had never disappeared.
As if she had never been hunted.
As if she hadn't manipulated half the people in the room.
Khloe stood.
"You."
Elena looked at her.
"I told you the truth."
"You lied."
"Not about everything."
"You kidnapped me."
"To keep you alive."
"You used Isabella."
"She survived."
"You used Marcus."
"I protected him."
Marcus stepped forward.
"You call destroying my life protection?"
Elena looked at him.
"You were never supposed to be involved."
"Then why did you let me marry her?"
Elena's expression changed.
"Because I needed someone strong enough to protect her."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"You could have asked."
"You would have refused."
"Maybe."
"Exactly."
Khloe stared at her mother.
"What do you want?"
Elena looked at her stomach.
"The child."
Marcus immediately stepped in front of Khloe.
"No."
Elena shook her head.
"I don't want to hurt her."
"Then what?"
"I want her protected."
"From whom?"
"Everyone."
Khloe frowned.
"You're the one threatening her."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"No."
She looked at Marcus.
"I'm protecting her from Edward."
Then she turned to Khloe.
"And from the person Edward trusts most."
Khloe's heart sank.
"Richard."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
She whispered:
"Your grandmother."
Khloe stared.
"My grandmother?"
"She didn't save you."
"Then what did she do?"
"She created the entire succession war."
Elena explained.
The Rossi family had discovered Edward's plan.
They knew Khloe would inherit the trust.
So they created a false identity for her.
They manipulated Marcus.
They created Isabella.
They arranged the marriage.
They monitored Khloe.
And when Edward survived the accident, they changed strategies.
"They wanted the child," Elena said.
"Not to protect her."
"But to control the trust through her."
Khloe shook her head.
"You're lying."
Elena pulled out a document.
"The original guardianship agreement."
Khloe read it.
The legal guardian of her unborn child would be...
Victoria Thorne.
Marcus's mother.
Khloe looked up.
"Victoria?"
Elena nodded.
"She signed it."
Marcus stared at the document.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
He looked devastated.
"Why?"
"Because she knew Edward would come back."
Marcus shook his head.
"She never told me."
"She was afraid."
"Everyone is always afraid."
Elena looked at him.
"Fear is what kept this family alive."
Marcus answered coldly:
"And destroyed it."
Suddenly, another voice came from the doorway.
"That's enough."
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood there.
Marcus stared.
"Mom."
Victoria looked at Khloe.
"I'm sorry."
Khloe's eyes filled with tears.
"You signed the guardianship."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I thought it would protect the baby."
"You had no right."
"I know."
Victoria stepped forward.
"I made the worst decision of my life."
Marcus stared at her.
"How long have you known?"
"Since before your wedding."
He looked crushed.
"You knew Khloe was the heir."
"Yes."
"You knew Edward was alive."
"Yes."
"You knew Elena was manipulating everyone."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Marcus's voice broke.
"And you said nothing."
"I was trying to keep you alive."
He shook his head.
"You don't get to call betrayal protection."
Victoria finally revealed the final piece.
The guardianship agreement had been created because Edward had threatened to seize the child.
But Victoria never intended to take the baby.
She intended to hide her.
The same way Khloe had been hidden.
The same cycle.
Mother after mother.
Child after child.
Every generation repeating the same lie.
Khloe looked around the room.
"No more."
Everyone became silent.
"No more hiding children."
"No more forged identities."
"No more deciding who deserves the truth."
She looked at Elena.
"My child will know who her family is."
She looked at Victoria.
"And nobody gets to take her."
She looked at Marcus.
"Not even us."
Marcus understood.
They would not become the people who had hurt them.
Elena's expression softened.
"That's why you were always the one."
Khloe frowned.
"What?"
"You were never meant to inherit the empire."
Elena smiled.
"You were meant to end it."
Khloe stared.
"End what?"
"The cycle."
Then the building shook.
An explosion erupted somewhere below.
Everyone screamed.
Harris ran toward the hallway.
"Move!"
Smoke filled the corridor.
Elena looked toward the windows.
"Edward."
Marcus grabbed Khloe.
"We have to go."
But Elena didn't move.
Khloe looked back.
"Come with us."
Elena smiled.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because someone has to stop him."
She looked at Isabella.
"Take care of her."
Isabella nodded.
Elena turned toward the smoke.
Then disappeared into it.
Khloe screamed:
"Mom!"
Marcus pulled her away.
The ceiling began collapsing.
They ran.
Outside, the building burned.
Firefighters surrounded the street.
Marcus held Khloe tightly.
Isabella stood beside them.
Victoria was crying.
Harris watched the flames.
"Where's Elena?"
Nobody knew.
Then a firefighter approached.
"We found someone."
Marcus turned.
"Who?"
The firefighter shook his head.
"An older woman."
Khloe's heart stopped.
"Is she alive?"
"Yes."
They rushed toward the ambulance.
But it wasn't Elena.
It was her grandmother.
She was badly injured.
Khloe stared at her.
Her grandmother opened her eyes.
"Khloe."
"What happened?"
The old woman coughed.
"Elena."
"What about her?"
"She took the seal."
Khloe froze.
"Where?"
The woman whispered:
"To Edward."
Marcus looked toward the burning building.
"Then Elena is going to him."
The grandmother nodded.
"And she knows his weakness."
"What weakness?"
The old woman's eyes filled with fear.
"His daughter."
Khloe stared.
"Elena?"
"No."
The grandmother shook her head.
"Isabella."
Everyone turned.
Isabella went pale.
"What?"
The old woman whispered:
"Isabella isn't Elena's daughter."
She looked at Khloe.
"She's Edward's."
Silence.
Isabella stumbled backward.
"No."
The grandmother continued.
"Edward doesn't know."
Marcus stared.
"Then why did Elena use her?"
"Because Elena knew exactly what would happen when he found out."
Isabella's face collapsed.
"What am I?"
The grandmother closed her eyes.
"You're the child Edward abandoned."
At that exact moment, inside the burning building, Elena stood before Edward.
The bloodline seal was in her hand.
Edward stared at her.
"You."
Elena smiled.
"Me."
"You betrayed me."
"No."
She placed the seal on the table.
"I finally stopped pretending to be loyal."
Edward reached for it.
Elena pulled it away.
"You wanted the heir."
"I still do."
"Then take her."
Edward frowned.
"Where is Khloe?"
Elena smiled.
"Safe."
"And the child?"
"Safe."
"Then what do you want?"
Elena looked at him.
"Your confession."
Edward laughed.
"You think I'll confess?"
Elena pressed a button.
A recording began.
Edward's own voice.
Every crime.
Every forged record.
Every order.
Every threat.
All of it.
Edward's face turned white.
"You recorded me."
"Yes."
"You betrayed me."
Elena shook her head.
"I betrayed nobody."
She looked toward the door.
"I chose my daughter."
Then she walked away.
Edward remained alone.
For the first time in his life, he had no control.
But as Elena reached the exit, she heard a voice behind her.
"You forgot one thing."
She turned.
Edward was smiling.
"The bloodline seal isn't the real key."
Elena froze.
Edward continued:
"The real key has been inside Khloe all along."
Elena's face changed.
"What?"
Edward smiled.
"The child."
Outside, Khloe suddenly felt a sharp pain.
She grabbed her stomach.
Marcus caught her.
"Khloe?"
She gasped.
Another contraction.
Then another.
Her eyes widened.
"Marcus."
"What?"
"The baby."
He looked toward the hospital.
"We're going."
Khloe shook her head.
"There's no time."
The ambulance doors opened.
Doctors rushed toward her.
As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Khloe looked at Marcus.
"I'm going to have her."
Marcus grabbed her hand.
"I know."
She squeezed his fingers.
Then the ambulance doors slammed shut.
As it raced toward the hospital, the entire city seemed to disappear behind them.
The family war had reached its final hour.
Because Edward wanted the child.
Elena wanted to protect her.
The grandmother wanted the trust.
Richard wanted revenge.
And Khloe wanted only one thing.
To bring her daughter into the world free.
But nobody knew that the final betrayal had already happened.
Inside the ambulance, the nurse checked Khloe's medical chart.
Then quietly looked at another document.
A document she had received thirty minutes earlier.
Her eyes widened.
She looked toward the driver.
"Stop the ambulance."
The driver didn't answer.
The nurse reached for her phone.
A message appeared.
PHASE TWO HAS BEGUN.
Then another.
TAKE THE BABY.
The nurse looked at Khloe.
Her face changed.
Because she wasn't a nurse.
She was one of Edward's people.
And the ambulance was not going to the hospital.
It was going somewhere else.
Somewhere Khloe had never been.
Somewhere the final heir had been expected to arrive for twenty-three years.
The old Rossi estate.
And when Khloe realized the truth, she screamed.
"Marcus!"
But the doors were locked.
The driver accelerated.
The nurse smiled.
And for the first time that night, Khloe understood the final betrayal.
It wasn't Elena.
It wasn't Isabella.
It wasn't Victoria.
It was someone she had trusted with her life.
Her doctor.
May you like
Dr. Leonard Vale.
And he had just ordered the ambulance to disappear.
