Chapter 12

Chapter 12

The Night Solmere Burned

The courtroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

The person standing there looked like a ghost from another lifetime.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably connected to the Vale family.

Charlotte stared.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

Because the person who entered the courtroom...

Was the last person anyone expected.

"Grandfather..."

The word escaped her lips before she could stop it.

Alexander Vale's father.

The founder of the original Vale fortune.

The man who had supposedly died twenty-five years earlier.

The courtroom erupted.

Reporters stood.

Cameras flashed.

People shouted questions.

But the old man ignored everyone.

His eyes were fixed only on Charlotte.

"My granddaughter."

Charlotte felt frozen.

"No."

She shook her head.

"My grandfather died."

The old man looked at Amelia.

Then at Richard.

"That is what they wanted everyone to believe."

The judge demanded order.

Security moved forward.

"Who are you?"

The judge asked.

The old man stepped forward.

"My name is Henry Vale."

A wave of shock passed through the room.

The founder of the Vale legacy.

The man whose death had changed everything.

Charlotte looked at Amelia.

"You knew."

Amelia lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

The pain on Charlotte's face was immediate.

Another secret.

Another person who knew the truth.

Henry looked at her.

"I did not hide because I wanted power."

"Then why?"

Charlotte asked.

His answer was simple.

"Because the night Solmere burned, I discovered who my family truly was."

The courtroom became silent.

The night Solmere burned.

Everyone had heard rumors.

A fire twenty-five years ago.

The destruction of an old Vale property.

The event that supposedly killed Henry Vale.

But nobody knew the truth.

Not even Charlotte.

Henry looked at the judge.

"Before Alexander created Solmere's final succession plan, he discovered someone was trying to destroy the family."

Richard remained expressionless.

But Charlotte noticed.

His hands tightened.

For the first time...

Richard was afraid.

Henry continued.

"That person was not a stranger."

"It was someone inside our home."

Charlotte felt a chill.

The same words again.

The enemy inside the family.

"Who?"

The judge asked.

Henry looked toward Richard.

"Ask the man who benefited from my death."

Everyone turned.

Richard slowly stood.

"This is absurd."

But his voice lacked confidence.

Henry smiled.

"You always were good at pretending."

The story began twenty-five years earlier.

Before Charlotte was born.

Before Solmere became an empire.

Henry Vale had discovered financial irregularities.

Millions of dollars moved through hidden accounts.

Company shares transferred without approval.

Documents altered.

At first, he suspected outsiders.

Then he found the truth.

The person behind the scheme had access to everything.

Family meetings.

Legal documents.

Private conversations.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

That person was Richard Ashford.

But Richard was not alone.

He had help.

A member of the Vale family gave him information.

A person who knew exactly where Alexander would be.

A person who knew about the hidden inheritance plan.

Charlotte looked at Amelia.

"Who helped him?"

Amelia's face became pale.

"I tried to tell your mother."

"Tell her what?"

"That someone she loved was working with Richard."

Charlotte's heart sank.

Someone she loved.

Again.

Henry continued.

"The night of the fire..."

Everyone listened.

"Richard wanted to destroy the old records."

"He believed if the documents disappeared, he could control Solmere."

"But he made one mistake."

"What mistake?"

Charlotte asked.

Henry looked at her.

"He underestimated your father."

Alexander had hidden copies.

The original contracts.

The succession plan.

The evidence.

But Richard discovered the secret archive.

And that was when everything changed.

The night of the fire.

The old Vale manor was quiet.

Alexander was away.

Evelyn was protecting Charlotte.

Henry entered the archive room.

He found Richard there.

Holding a match.

"You were stealing my son's legacy."

Henry said.

Richard turned.

"I was correcting his mistakes."

"You think you deserve everything?"

Richard smiled.

"No."

"I think nobody deserves it."

The fire began.

Records burned.

Walls collapsed.

Everyone believed Henry died.

But Amelia found him.

She rescued him.

And together they disappeared.

Because Richard believed the evidence was gone.

Back in the courtroom, Charlotte could barely breathe.

"So all these years..."

Henry nodded.

"I watched."

"Waiting."

"Protecting what remained."

Charlotte looked at him.

"Then why didn't you come back?"

Henry's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was too late."

Richard suddenly laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Everyone turned.

"You expect them to believe this?"

He pointed toward Henry.

"A man who disappeared for decades?"

Then he looked at Charlotte.

"He abandoned his own family."

Charlotte said nothing.

Because part of her understood.

Richard was trying to turn the truth into another battle.

Then Richard revealed something.

A document.

"Since everyone wants secrets exposed..."

He held it up.

"Let us reveal one more."

The courtroom watched.

"This document proves Henry Vale transferred control of Solmere before his disappearance."

Charlotte frowned.

"Transferred to who?"

Richard smiled.

The answer shocked everyone.

"To me."

The courtroom exploded.

Henry looked at the document.

Then his expression changed.

Because he recognized it.

A document he had signed.

But not willingly.

Charlotte looked at Richard.

"You forged it."

Richard smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"I didn't."

He looked toward the audience.

"Someone else did."

Charlotte followed his gaze.

And once again...

Everyone looked at the same person.

The person sitting quietly throughout the entire trial.

The person who had never defended themselves.

The person who knew every secret.

Charlotte whispered:

"No..."

Because the truth was finally coming together.

The betrayal did not begin with Richard.

Richard was only a weapon.

The real mastermind had been watching from the shadows.

Then the courtroom lights suddenly went out.

A fire alarm exploded.

Smoke began filling the room.

People screamed.

Security rushed forward.

Charlotte covered her mouth.

A smell filled the air.

Burning paper.

Just like that night.

The night Solmere burned.

Through the smoke, Charlotte heard a voice.

A familiar voice.

"You should have let the past stay buried."

Charlotte turned.

She could not see the person.

Only a shadow.

Then the voice continued:

"Your mother discovered the truth."

"Your father discovered the truth."

"And now..."

A pause.

"You discovered too much."

The fire grew stronger.

The same fire that destroyed the Vale family decades ago...

Had returned.

But this time...

Charlotte was inside.

May you like

And someone wanted to make sure the final secret of Solmere burned with her.

To be continued...
