Chapter 14

Chapter 14

The Price of Greed

The photograph remained on Charlotte's phone.

A young Ethan Vale.

Standing beside a person Charlotte knew.

A person she trusted.

A person who had always appeared whenever the Vale family needed help.

Her hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From disbelief.

Because the person standing beside Ethan in the photograph was...

Martin Cole.

Charlotte looked up slowly.

"No."

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Thomas looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"Martin?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Impossible."

But Charlotte knew better than anyone.

The impossible had become normal in the Vale family.

People died and returned.

Secrets disappeared and resurfaced.

Truth was buried and dug up again.

Nothing was impossible anymore.

The next morning, Martin was gone.

His house was empty.

His phone was turned off.

His office had been cleared.

The man who spent decades protecting the Vale family had vanished overnight.

And the question everyone asked was the same.

Was Martin Cole the protector?

Or the greatest betrayer of them all?

Charlotte sat alone in Alexander Vale's old office.

The same room where her father once made decisions that shaped the empire.

On the desk was the old family photograph.

Alexander.

Evelyn.

Adrian.

Charlotte.

And the missing piece.

Ethan.

She touched the empty space.

"How many people disappeared because of this family?"

No one answered.

Adrian entered quietly.

"You shouldn't be alone."

Charlotte did not look up.

"Why?"

"Because every time someone is alone in this family, they discover something terrible."

Despite everything, Charlotte almost smiled.

Almost.

"That might be the first honest thing you have said."

Adrian accepted the criticism.

"I deserve that."

A silence passed.

Then Charlotte asked:

"Do you think Martin betrayed us?"

Adrian looked at the photograph.

"I don't know."

"That scares you."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Because Martin was the only person my father trusted completely."

Meanwhile, across the city...

Richard Ashford watched the news.

The headlines were everywhere.

MISSING VALE CONFIDANT LINKED TO LOST HEIR

For the first time in years, Richard looked exhausted.

Not defeated.

But tired.

Because his carefully built world was collapsing.

His assistant entered.

"Mr. Ashford."

Richard did not turn.

"Tell me."

"We found Martin."

Richard finally looked up.

"Where?"

The assistant hesitated.

"With Ethan Vale."

Silence.

Richard closed his eyes.

"So he finally chose a side."

The assistant looked confused.

"Sir?"

Richard smiled bitterly.

"You still don't understand."

"Martin was never Ethan's enemy."

"He was never Charlotte's enemy."

"He was mine."

That night, Charlotte received another message.

Unknown number.

But this time...

She recognized the sender.

Ethan.

Come alone.

You deserve to know why everyone lied to you.

Charlotte arrived at an abandoned Solmere warehouse.

The place where the empire stored its oldest records.

The place where forgotten things went to disappear.

Inside, she found Ethan.

The man who claimed to be the true heir.

The man who had been erased.

"You look like him."

Charlotte said.

Ethan smiled faintly.

"My father?"

"Alexander."

A painful expression crossed his face.

"He was a good man."

"Then why did everyone lose him?"

Ethan looked away.

"Because he trusted the wrong people."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"You know who betrayed him."

"Yes."

"Tell me."

Ethan remained silent.

Then he answered:

"Greed."

Charlotte frowned.

"That's not a person."

"No."

Ethan said.

"It's worse."

"It's something that changes people."

He explained.

The Vale family was not destroyed because one person wanted power.

It was destroyed because everyone wanted something.

Richard wanted control.

Adrian wanted recognition.

Amelia wanted justice.

Martin wanted protection.

And even Alexander...

Alexander wanted to build something that would survive forever.

But every person who tried to protect Solmere became willing to sacrifice someone else.

Including Charlotte.

"Your mother knew."

Ethan said.

Charlotte looked up.

"Knew what?"

"That Solmere was already broken."

"Before Richard."

"Before the fire."

Ethan handed her a folder.

Inside were old documents.

The original Solmere financial records.

Charlotte read carefully.

Then her face changed.

Because she discovered something shocking.

Richard had not stolen billions.

He had saved billions.

From a company that was already collapsing.

"What?"

Charlotte whispered.

Ethan nodded.

"Everyone believes Richard destroyed Solmere."

"But the truth is..."

"He found the corruption first."

Charlotte looked confused.

"Then why?"

"Because instead of exposing it..."

"He used it."

Richard had discovered that powerful people inside the company were stealing money.

Board members.

Executives.

Family associates.

He could have revealed everything.

Instead...

He blackmailed them.

Controlled them.

Replaced them.

He saved the empire.

But he became the monster in the process.

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

"Why are you showing me this?"

"Because you need to understand something."

"What?"

"Richard is not the beginning of the story."

A pause.

"He is the consequence."

Then the warehouse doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Martin stood there.

Charlotte immediately stepped back.

"You."

Martin looked broken.

"I know what you think."

"You were with Ethan."

"Yes."

"You hid him."

"Yes."

"You lied to me."

Martin lowered his head.

"Yes."

Charlotte felt anger burning.

"Why?"

Martin looked at Ethan.

Then back at Charlotte.

"Because I failed one child."

A pause.

"And I refused to fail another."

The truth finally came out.

The night of the fire, Martin found Ethan.

A young boy hiding among the ruins.

Alive.

Terrified.

Richard believed Ethan was dead.

The world believed Ethan was gone.

So Martin made a choice.

He took Ethan away.

He erased his identity.

He protected him.

But there was a cost.

He could never return.

He could never tell Charlotte.

He could never reveal the truth.

"Your mother knew."

Martin said.

Charlotte froze.

"What?"

"She knew Ethan survived."

The room became silent.

"She knew?"

Martin nodded.

"She wanted to bring him home."

"Then why didn't she?"

Martin looked at her.

"Because Richard had already found him."

Charlotte felt cold.

"Richard knew Ethan was alive?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he kill him?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

Ethan finally spoke.

"Because Richard needed me."

Charlotte looked at him.

"For what?"

Ethan's expression hardened.

"To prove something."

A recording suddenly played from the warehouse speakers.

Richard's voice.

Everyone froze.

"I knew the Vale family would destroy itself."

His voice echoed.

"So I created a solution."

Charlotte listened.

"One heir would fight another."

"One truth would destroy another truth."

"And while they fought..."

"I would rebuild Solmere."

The recording ended.

Charlotte understood.

Richard's greatest weapon was never money.

It was conflict.

He turned a family against itself.

But then another message appeared on the screen.

Not from Richard.

From someone else.

A final line.

You still don't know who ordered the fire.

Everyone froze.

Because after everything...

After every secret.

After every betrayal.

The mastermind was still hidden.

Charlotte looked at Ethan.

"Who?"

Ethan stared at the screen.

His answer was barely a whisper.

"The person who started this entire war."

A pause.

"The person who created Solmere."

Charlotte's face changed.

Because there was only one person left.

The founder.

The first Vale.

Her own grandfather.

Henry Vale.

And suddenly Charlotte realized...

The greatest betrayal in Solmere's history was not committed by the people who wanted the empire.

May you like

It was committed by the person who built it.

To be continued...
