Chapter 5

The Man Who Stole the Empire

The message on Richard Ashford's phone changed everything.

You both forgot one thing.

I was the one who made your father sign.

For years, Charlotte believed the enemy was obvious.

Adrian Vale.

The missing heir.

The man who vanished.

The man her mother feared.

Then she discovered Victoria.

The woman in white silk.

The woman who knew the secrets of the Vale family long before Charlotte returned.

But now...

There was someone else.

Richard Ashford.

The man who stood beside the Vale family for decades.

The man who attended their dinners.

The man who comforted them after Alexander's death.

The man who promised to protect Solmere.

The man who stole everything.

Charlotte looked at Adrian.

"You knew he was involved."

It was not a question.

Adrian looked away.

"I suspected."

"SUSPECTED?"

Charlotte's voice echoed through the office.

"You knew my mother was afraid."

"You knew Richard had access to the company."

"You knew someone was changing the records."

She stepped closer.

"And you still let everyone believe you were the only threat."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"I was trying to uncover the truth."

Charlotte laughed bitterly.

"By destroying everything?"

He did not answer.

Because there was something both of them understood.

They were not allies.

Not yet.

But they were chasing the same enemy.

The person who had manipulated them all.

Richard Ashford.

Later that night, Charlotte returned to her temporary apartment.

She could not sleep.

Every memory of her childhood felt different now.

Every conversation.

Every family dinner.

Every moment Richard had smiled at her.

Was it real?

Or had he been watching her like a future obstacle?

Her phone rang.

Thomas Reed.

"Charlotte."

His voice sounded urgent.

"You need to leave that apartment."

She stood immediately.

"Why?"

"I found something."

"What?"

"Evidence that Richard knows where you are."

Charlotte looked around.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"How?"

Thomas hesitated.

"Because the company security system was never transferred to you."

"What does that mean?"

"It means Richard has been monitoring everything connected to Solmere."

Including her.

Charlotte grabbed her bag.

"Where are you?"

Before Thomas could answer, the lights went out.

The apartment became completely dark.

Charlotte froze.

Someone was inside.

She heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

She reached for the nearest object.

A heavy lamp.

"Who is there?"

No answer.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"Charlotte."

Her grip tightened.

She knew that voice.

Richard Ashford.

The lights turned on.

He stood near the doorway.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

Not like a criminal.

Not like someone who had destroyed a family.

Like a businessman arriving for a meeting.

"You broke into my home."

Charlotte said.

Richard smiled.

"Your home?"

The words were deliberate.

Charlotte stared at him.

"Leave."

Instead, Richard walked toward the table.

"You really are like your mother."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"Do not mention her."

"Always searching for answers."

He looked around.

"But never asking the right questions."

"What questions?"

Richard looked at her.

"Why did Alexander Vale choose you?"

Charlotte stayed silent.

"Why did he trust you with everything?"

"He was my father."

Richard smiled.

"That was exactly your weakness."

"What?"

"You believed love was the reason people made decisions."

He moved closer.

"Your father built an empire because he understood people."

"And you?"

Charlotte asked.

"I understand people better."

The confidence in his voice was terrifying.

Richard had not stolen Solmere through violence.

He had stolen it through patience.

He waited.

Watched.

Learned.

Then he attacked.

"Your mother discovered the truth too late."

Richard said.

Charlotte's face changed.

"What did you do to her?"

Richard did not answer directly.

"I gave her a choice."

A cold feeling moved through Charlotte.

"What choice?"

"Accept the new reality."

"Or fight."

"And she fought."

Charlotte's hands tightened.

"What happened?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"Your mother was always brave."

That was not an answer.

"Richard."

Charlotte stepped forward.

"What happened to my mother?"

For the first time, his expression became cold.

"She lost."

The words cut deeper than Charlotte expected.

Not because she believed him.

Because she understood.

Richard did not see people.

He saw winners and losers.

Her mother.

Her father.

Everyone.

Just pieces in his game.

"How did you do it?"

Charlotte asked.

Richard looked at the window.

"The same way every empire falls."

"From inside."

He explained.

After Alexander Vale died, Richard convinced the board that Charlotte was too young and inexperienced.

He presented himself as a temporary solution.

Temporary became permanent.

He moved loyal employees into powerful positions.

Removed people who questioned him.

Changed financial structures.

Created legal barriers.

And then he did the most important thing.

He made Charlotte disappear.

"Your identity was never erased completely."

Richard admitted.

Charlotte stared.

"Why?"

"Because a dead heir creates questions."

He smiled.

"But a forgotten heir?"

"People stop looking."

The cruelty of it was breathtaking.

Charlotte had not been defeated.

She had been erased.

"You stole my life."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I showed you the truth."

"What truth?"

"That people only respect power."

Charlotte looked at him.

"And now?"

"Now you want to take it back."

"Yes."

Richard smiled.

"Then prove you deserve it."

Charlotte frowned.

"What?"

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside was a lawsuit.

A legal challenge against her ownership claim.

"Tomorrow morning, the board will vote."

"On what?"

"Whether Charlotte Vale has the right to control Solmere."

Charlotte looked at the documents.

"This is impossible."

"No."

Richard corrected.

"This is business."

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

"One more thing."

Charlotte looked up.

"Your mother left you a message."

Her heart stopped.

"What message?"

Richard smiled.

"The one she never wanted you to hear."

Then he left.

Charlotte immediately opened the folder.

At the bottom was a small digital file.

A video.

Recorded by Evelyn Vale.

Her mother.

Charlotte pressed play.

The screen showed Evelyn sitting in her office.

Tired.

Afraid.

But alive.

"Charlotte..."

Charlotte's eyes filled instantly.

"If you are watching this, then Richard has already taken control."

A pause.

"I am sorry."

Her mother's voice trembled.

"I spent my life protecting you."

"But I made one mistake."

Charlotte leaned closer.

"I trusted the wrong person."

The video continued.

"Richard was not alone."

Charlotte froze.

"There is someone inside our family helping him."

A pause.

"Someone you love."

The recording ended.

Charlotte sat completely still.

Because the biggest betrayal was no longer Richard.

It was the question her mother left behind.

Who inside the Vale family had helped the man who stole the empire?

May you like

And why did that person want Charlotte forgotten forever?

To be continued...
